Indian Military Helicopters
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
From HAL Media Q&A:
ALH - total orders 159, 136 delivered. Rest by 2017-18. 73 more are ordered.

Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Does HAL have a plan for further improvements for Dhruv? I remember the original targeted weight was around 2250 Kgs. I don't think Dhruv will receive any major attention until IMRH is completed.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
DG of Army Aviation Corps has taken a ride in the LCH. Vishnu Som has flown on LCA.
Very pleased to see this effort to win hearts and minds of much wider audience. Hopefully, some of the media driven misinformation campaign get blunted.

Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Dhruv needs to be improved every 10 years. The uh1 ah1 mi17 ch47 alouette3 and sh60 have had very long and successful lives. With due upgrades we can keep producong it another 30 years...helicopters have not changed much in 50 years and the osprey and ah56 were duds as was notar. No great disrupting innovation.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
I think the next round of improvement will be when the 1200kw engine starts testing on a real platform. It will also push the payload up by 15-20%.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
We've a huge helicopter requirement of every type. We're looking at largest helicopter fleet outside of USA. Army is looking at Khanish style aviation brigades for each Corps.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Dil maange attack versions of LUH and IMRH.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Why are they needed, when we already have Rudra and LCH? Secondly, I can understand an attack version of LUH, but IMRH ? How is a 10-12 ton attack helicopter useful? Genuine question.Indranil wrote:Dil maange attack versions of LUH and IMRH.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
I don't know. I am just trusting IAF/IA's judgment on the NEED of a heavy gunship like Apache
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
ASW variant for the Navy. Mi-17 can carry rocket & gun pods on its stub wings. Similarly, Hellfires have been tried on UH-60 variants. Perhaps as a secondary or even occasional attack capability if not a primary function.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
HAL displays mockup of multirole helicopter
External fuel tanks, confirmation of a 3000 shp class engine and service ceiling of 21,320 feet.
..
The twin engine platform is in its preliminary design phase and two versions are planned in the transport configuration. The troop configuration will have a seating for 24, while the VIP transport version will seat 18 with a cabin volume of 23 cubic metres.
A HAL company representative told Jane's , "HAL intends to fast-track development of this platform and we plan to release an RFI for the 3,000-shp-class twin engines before July this year. Initially it will be aimed at the Indian Air Force and even Indian Army requirements, while a naval variant is also planned."
The 12.5 tonne IMRH will have a service ceiling of 21,320 ft and a payload of 3,500 kg. The maximum speed for the platform is expected to be 230 km/h with a maximum range of 500 km - this will be extended to 800 km with external fuel tanks.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
3000shp seems about right. i've been following the Pentagon's FVL competition and similar powerplants are in the running for Black Hawk replacement.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
I don't know what is it about LUH, but it has grown on me like a moss.

The contenders will possibly be
Safran: https://www.verticalmag.com/news/safran ... t-program/
PW: PW127 (used on mi38 to set a record of 2000kgs at 23Kft). That is also a heavier platform.
GE: CT7-8

Why the IMRH chief ?Indranil wrote:Dil maange attack versions of LUH and IMRH.
Would it not be too heavy ... I am thinking of the IMRH as an Mil17 category craft.

I think he means something like the Mi-24/Mi-35 (which was actually derived from the Mi-8/Mi-17).Khalsa wrote:Why the IMRH chief ?Indranil wrote:Dil maange attack versions of LUH and IMRH.

Re: Indian Military Helicopters
That would be like the Ah64 class of birds. If all the weapons will be same between LCH and MCH, what would it still bring something to the table? As far as I understand, AH64 allows different weapons to be used esp for SEAD work.Indranil wrote:Dil maange attack versions of LUH and IMRH.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Same. It's a beautiful helicopter. w/ ALH, LUH, and the Mi-17 class heli in development we should try to do better marketing and get some foreign customers.Indranil wrote:I don't know what is it about LUH, but it has grown on me like a moss.

The progress of LUH is going to cause a lot of takleef to our Russian "partners" wrt the Kamov deal.Indranil wrote:I don't know what is it about LUH, but it has grown on me like a moss.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Met deejay in person at Aero India. He pointed out something that I had not realized. There is a GI-normous mock up of the IMRH - but they have walled it off so no one can see it unless you negotiate all sorts of corners. This is a as bad as any marketing and publicity effort can get.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Cabin entry is thronged by VIPs sir. Though access to get near was pretty free.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
LUH has the potential to be our UH1 Huey - with 1000s of being built.
a production run of 750 for Dhruv and 1500 for LUH should permit us the headroom for some airborne brigades.
build and the roles will emerge.

Re: Indian Military Helicopters
If it looks right, it flies right.... I am suspecting once it enters service and starts showing its dhruv genes in the highlands, the kamov will be relegated to more menial tasks.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
The beauty of LUH is that from the looks of its main cabin, it offers at least 30% more room than Chetak. Compared to Cheetah, the volume of space available should be even higher.

DG Army Aviation Flies the LCH
On 15 Feb 17, Lt Gen Kanwal Kumar, DG Army Aviation Corps flew the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) at the Aero India 2017. The LCH is indigenously developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and will soon be inducted into the Indian Army. This combat helicopter is light, manoeuvrable and armed with devastating fire power. It has the capability to manoeuvre through narrow valleys, mountains and high altitude areas, providing effective support to ground operations. The LCH, armed with its turret mounted gun, rockets, air to air missiles and air to ground missiles is a potent force multiplier and shall greatly enhance the Indian Army's military capability.

Re: Indian Military Helicopters
^^^IAF and IA are getting 10 and 5 numbers of LCH each from the pre-production lot.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
Please select the missile quickly as well.
Re: Indian Military Helicopters
I think the missile is chosen. They are just going through the formalities.

Re: Indian Military Helicopters
The engine import continues to nag. (All rough numbers below)
ALH - 300 ( = 600 engines )
LCH - 200 ( = 400 )
LUH - 200 ( = 200 )
A neat 1000 engines all from Safran with each possibly having a life of 3-4000 hours(?)
At a sum of 500K(?) USD a piece , thats $500 million.
Plus operating costs etc - bringing it to at least $700 million
All these numbers would have stared at MoD years before. I wonder why they did not think it prudent to invest in this critical technology 10 years ago.
