KLNMji, you may be entirely right!

On the other hand:
KLNMurthy wrote: Maybe someone else will have more interesting results. But I think the exercise itself is not required to formulate a proper pakistan policy. Also, I doubt that we will be able to scientifically predict the windows during which an attack is significantly more likely to come.

The foundation for a rational pakistan policy for India should exclude the assumption that any action or policy of India will influence paki attacks one way or the other. It should also exclude the expectation that we will "settle" things with Pakistan and have a meaningful "peace." The policy should simply focus on maximizing the benefit and minimizing the loss for India, minus these two assumptions.
1. If there is "method in the madness" behind Pakistan's actions, the new-fangled Big Data technology should be able to find it. But the first problem is assembling a data set. Doing something like mining the LexisNexis data set might be needed.

2. Policy informed by data helps corporations make sales, solve technical problems (e.g., recent example, the engineers at Tesla figured out a problem with the acceleration of their electric cars), improve customer service and so on. Large corporations worldwide didn't spend more than $10 billion in 2014 on Big Data for nothing. It is hard to imagine, a priori, that policy informed by data is impossible and/or useless.

Of course, big data methods aren't scientific. There is some mathematics about how likely various methods of analysis are likely to find a pattern in the data, assuming that there is one to find. The predictions are probabilistic. It is not necessary that one is able to disentangle the causes and effects, which is what is needed to do science.

3. If any action or policy by India can't influence Paki attacks, then most of the STFUP thread is pointless.

Talking to Pakistan rather than not-talking-to-Pakistan at least gives the benefit of making India seem to the world to be the reasonable party; and its cost is the same as the not-talking-to-Pakistan (because with this assumption, Paki attacks won't be influenced either way.)

Likewise, retaliatory shelling across the LoC is pointless, if it can't change Paki behavior. In fact, by not retaliating, India can pose as the "turn-the-other-cheek" martyr and win the "responsible power" title and win world sympathy. It also saves the cost of ammunition.

4. I agree that "settle with Pakistan and have a meaningful peace" is far off, if not impossible. But minimizing the flare-ups in which Indians are killed might be possible.

Anyway, it is a pipe dream and a pointless discussion, unless I or someone figures out how to assemble the necessary data sets, and then do the analysis. My hope is that there is someone reading this that can act upon it. It might make a good master's thesis for a computer scientist, or a cross-disciplinary social scientist. In the meantime, rain on.

Falling exports
IT has been more than a year and a half now that exports have been falling consistently. Initially the government took the line that this is a temporary state of affairs, then argued that the declines have to do with falling commodity prices.
Today we have exporter associations sending out SOS messages and professional economists telling us that this is a disastrous state of affairs.
Exporters typically point to the rising cost of doing business as the main reason, while more recent reports by economists have pointed towards an overvalued rupee.
Plugging external deficits through borrowing, privatisation receipts and remittances is not the answer.

This last one week was a series of bad news for the Al Bakistanis and Jernail (Retard) Gul.

First, a big huge spanner in the ISI/Taliban vs Afghan Govt piss talks was thrown when someone in afghanistan released info that MO had met his 72 many years ago.

Almost immediately, the taliban started fighting amongst themselves, there was a leadership struggle and everyone forgot about the talks.
The ISI ordered a car bomb attack in Kabul.
This made Ashraf Ghani really really angry, and he gave the Pakistanis a piece of his mind. He had some very choice words to say about Pakistan and in front of the whole international media too!

This whole "Piss talks" sham has been killed off for the foreseeable future, Pakistan has shown its terrorist hand once again.

Harami Gul was on TV after this, and HE WAS CUSSING and REALLY CALLING NAMES TO ASHRAF GHANI !!! He was really really upset.
Me thinks this triggered off the downhill spiral for him.

And my god, does the almighty have a sense of humor! Harami Gul had to die on 15th August !!!

Yaa,
And he was trying to get India during the MMS regime, to allow Pakistani trucks to ply in India carrying goods to afghanistan.

GOI swatted out that idea with a lot of contempt. The Afghans did that at their end too.

Gul's plan was to have his trucks pick up goods from India, carry it across pakistan and into afghanistan. Knowing him, he probably also planned to do some nice drug smuggling and arms smuggling if he could have gotten a chance.

Begum Beater Baki, Double Trouble for Ajlaaf Miskeen Paki
Double diplomatic collapse
PAKISTAN’S diplomatic initiatives with Afghanistan and India have both collapsed.
It was evident from the outset that India and hostile elements in Afghanistan would work overtime to subvert this peace initiative. They appear to have succeeded. The Islamabad-Kabul understanding was based on over-optimistic expectations on both sides. Ghani’s ability to act against the TTP and the BLA was constrained by his lack of control of the Afghan security establishment, especially the National Directorate of Security (NDS) — Afghanistan’s intelligence agency — led by a Karzai holdover. Kabul proved unable (or unwilling) to kill, capture or expel Mullah Fazlullah and other TTP elements holed up in Afghanistan.Similarly, Pakistan promised too much in offering to bring the Afghan Taliban to the negotiating table. To do so, Islamabad was obliged to revive or reveal its contacts with them. If the Kabul-Taliban talks had succeeded, few would have objected to the presence of Afghan Taliban leaders in Pakistan. Unfortunately, the revelation of Mullah Omar’s demise by the NDS upended the talks. (Pakistan’s failure was in either not knowing of Mullah Omar’s death or not preventing the NDS from gaining knowledge of this while senior Taliban commanders remained unaware.)As no doubt anticipated by the NDS and its Indian patrons, a leadership struggle ensued between the ‘fight’ and the ‘fight and talk’ factions within the Taliban. To salvage the talks, Pakistan’s agencies attempted to hastily gather the Taliban leaders to select Omar’s deputy as the new Amirul Momineen, further exposing the relationship. But the Taliban’s fighting faction, freed of Mullah Omar’s ghost edicts supporting talks, and fearful of losing ground to the self-styled ‘Islamic State’ (IS), escalated its attacks within Afghanistan, particularly against targets in Kabul.

Under pressure to avoid blame for the security failures in Kabul, and aware that Islamabad was no longer able to deliver the Taliban to the negotiating table, President Ghani took the easy route of placing all the blame on Pakistan. His Aug 10 statement was indistinguishable from Karzai’s familiar diatribes against Pakistan. Chief Executive Abdullah and other factions joined him in whipping up the anti-Pakistan animus. The ‘gathering’ of Taliban leaders to choose Mullah Mansour as Omar’s successor was used as a basis to extrapolate that Pakistan maintained Taliban sanctuaries and bomb-making factories, and connived in the Taliban attacks. Ghani declared that he did not want Pakistan to bring the Taliban to the table but to “prosecute” them.Kabul was the scene of orchestrated demonstrations against Pakistan, the burning of Pakistan’s national flag, calls for boycott of trade with and even ‘jihad’ against Pakistan. A demand was made that an Afghan delegation be immediately received by Pakistan’s prime minister and army chief.Instead of protesting Kabul’s unsubstantiated charges and demanding an apology for the desecration of Pakistan’s national flag, Pakistan’s leadership meekly received the angry Afghan delegation to clear the “misunderstanding” ( to quote Sartaj Aziz).

Pakistan will be able to evoke respect for its national interests only if it respects its own dignity and honour. Pakistan should demand an apology from Kabul for the desecration of its national flag and a retraction of the wild accusations voiced by Ghani and other Afghan leaders. If they desire a trade boycott, Pakistan should fulfil their wish and halt all trans-shipment and transit until they reverse their hostility. At the strategic level too, there is need for a careful policy review to deal with an Afghanistan that is likely to be embroiled in chaos and conflict for some time. Pakistan should: first, secure its border against TTP and BLA infiltration from Afghan territory; second, devise strategies to eliminate their safe havens in Afghanistan; third, promote coherence among the Afghan Taliban; and, fourth, work with China, Russia, the US, Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume the Kabul-Taliban talks and insulate Afghanistan from infiltration by the IS.The debacle on the west is intimately related to the disturbing developments in the east. Apart from working to scuttle a Pakistan-Afghan rapprochement, India has rejected Pakistan’s endeavours to resume the ‘composite dialogue’ and exerted direct pressure on Pakistan to keep it on the diplomatic and military defensive — thus the Line of Control (LoC) violations, threatening statements and the hostile media and diplomatic campaigns.
Instead of a muscular response, Pakistan has virtually endorsed the Indian premises for normalisation in the Ufa statement by restricting the Pakistan-India talks to terrorism, evoking public denunciation within the country and disappointment from Kashmiri leaders. The Gurdaspur incident, on the eve of the scheduled terrorism talks, is no accident. Indian agencies are past masters at stage-managing such events to suit their purpose. The Indian media has been unleashed to pin blame for this incident also on Pakistan. Yet, Pakistan’s national security adviser plans to walk blithely into this Indian entrapment in New Delhi next week.Instead of submitting to Modi’s agenda, Pakistan should remind the world that: Kashmir remains a nuclear flashpoint and must be addressed, bilaterally or multilaterally; that India’s arms build-up will oblige Pakistan to respond appropriately; and that the danger of a disastrous conflict can be avoided only through a comprehensive dialogue encompassing Kashmir and reciprocal arms control between Pakistan and India. :rotfl:

Pakistan's spy agency ISI's former chief Lt General (retd) Hamid Gul tonight passed away after a brain haemorrhage.
Gul suffered a brain haemorrhage and was shifted to the Combined Military Hospital in Murree near here where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival, the Dawn reported. Gul remained ISI chief during 1987 and 1989 when the US-backed Afghanistan's war against the then Soviet Union was at the last stages. He continued working in the spy agency in the post-stages of the Afghan war.
He retired from service in 1992. Born in Sargodha on November 20, 1936, he joined the army in 1954 and was commissioned in the army in 1956.
During the 1965 Indo-Pak war, Gul was a tank commander. He received training from the Staff college Quetta during 1968-1969. He then served as a battalion commander from 1972 to 1976 following which he was promoted to the rank of brigadier in 1978.
In 1980, he was promoted to First Armoured Division Multan Corp's Commander and also served as martial law administrator in Bahawalpur.
He was also awarded Hilal e Imtiaz (Military) and Sitarah e Basalat for his services......
__________
Into the arms of 72. I hope he remembers what to with them. Personally I will miss his BS in Paki TV commentaries. But what the hell there are others just as bad.

What was the role of Hamid Gul in supporting Dawood and then protecting him after the Mumbai blasts? In one of his speeches The Invincible Pigeon said, "Dawood ka to purana hisab chukana hai" . I wonder whether there's score settling going on.

Overall, lots of surprising things have happened after the Gurdaspur attack. E.g. MO declared dead. Military helicopter with officers crashes. Hamid Gul dies. Probably all these incidents are just a coincidence?

Former Afghan Warlord and present First Vice President of Afghanistan, Gen. The Afghan First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum joined the Afghan security institutions and top government officials for blaming Pakistan’s military intelligence for the ongoing violence in the country.

Gen. Dostum is currently in northern Faryab province of Afghanistan to coordinate military operations against the anti-government armed militant groups amid deteriorating security situation in this province.

He said the Pakistani military generals and the country’s powerful military intelligence – Inter service Intelligence (ISI) are plotting and coordinating attacks across Afghanistan, under the name of al Qaeda, Islamic State affiliates and Taliban militants.

According to Gen. Dostum, the ongoing violence in Afghanistan could end only if Pakistan’s military and ISI truely coopeate with the Afghan government.
