So this theme about the British wanting to retain control over Gilgit so they could monitor Soviet advances into central asia as part of the great game, was the reason why the British wanted J&K to be either be given to Pakistan or be split such that GB stays with Pakistan. I've read this theme in several books on this subject.
It is possible Nehru's gambit of going to the UN was to allow this to happen. He stopped the Indian army from taking over GB.
