"Reliance Power and BPDB today signed a MoU to develop four units of power plants to produce 3,000 MW of electricity with a cost of $3 billion," the company said in a statement. .....Adani Power will set up two coal-fired plants with a total capacity of 1,600 MW that will cost more than $1.5 billion.
The Indian companies are doing it at $1 billion per 1000 MW.
Long Phu 3 plant is also expected to cost roughly $2 billion, with a capacity of 2,000 MW.

The above is about $1.6 billion per 1000 MW, and this is without overhead one might think is contributing to the costs in other projects (e.g., setting up coal mining in Thar, or setting up railway capacity to transport coal from Karachi to Punjab).

It would seem to me that friendship with China is costing Pakistan 50% above the market rate for power plants. The friendship has to be indeed taller than mountains and deeper than seas for it to survive market forces.

There was a rumor spread by imran Khan (who by the way has an impressive twitter troll army*) that Najam Sethi called up Nawaz and told him "35 punctures have been fixed" :- meaning 35 constituencies have been rigged. This was the basic immy complaint. That the elections have been fixed and that he deserves to the prime minister. Hence the container protest that fizzled out.
Nawaz smartly got into a deal with the bad Sharif (more on that later) where by bad Sharif promised to not lamp post Nawaz and in return Nawaz promises to stay out of bad Sharif's domain (army, foreign policy, Afghanistan, India, terrorism, baksheesh). Bad Sharif then persuaded Nawaz to form a commission to inquire into immy's allegation.
Here is where the interesting stories start. Like a toilet bowl, the same turds go round and round the Pakistan. For example the lawyer who is doing the alleging on imran's behalf and cross examining Najam sethi, is the same guy who faught on Sethi's behalf when sethi was arrested by: Nawaz the same lawyer also encouraged ZAB's PPP government to arrest sethi.
The same set of people are with each other and against each other and its all a huge mess.
Anyway, immy, who has perfected kejri's shoot and scoot when asked to provide proof and argument, did the same shoot and scoot in court. Unfortunately that didn't work in court and they haven't shown a single instance of rigging with proper proof yet. That's the 35 puncture story.
*Coming to immy's troll army. They are dumb even by paki standards. Before the Peshawar attack, when immy was against attacking TTP and for talking to them, they would allege anyone who advocated military action as a RAW agent. After immy joined the "attack TTP" campaign, now if anyone who suggests that maybe purely military option won't work, they are being called as RAW agents by the same troll army.

In fact, I have abolished all undue “perks and privileges” that previous chairmen enjoyed, like free First Class International Travel with spouse, a posse of hangers-on, a fleet of expensive rented cars, millions of rupees of free tickets for family, friends and cronies during international cricket events abroad, unlimited entertainment allowances, BoG meetings in holiday resorts, and a score-full of jobs in PCB for sifarishis and family. The “Penti Penture Theory” was based on idle talk cunningly fabricated by a maverick named Ejaz Hussain who was desperate to worm his way into the top echelons of Khan’s party. A gullible Imran bought into it readily because it suited his political ploy. How could he manufacture a conspiracy theory of Nawaz Sharif stealing the election without challenging the results of the elections in the Punjab that contributed to Mr Sharif”s thumping victory? Hence it was critical to damn my administration. Fourteen months ago, I sued him in court to prove his allegations or pay damages for defaming me. He hasn’t appeared in court once, nor filed a word in response to my complaint. Much the same may be said of his lackeys like Naeem ul Haque and Shirin Mazari who have parroted the same lie ad nauseum, and “journalists” like Dr Shahid Masood who are constantly creeping out of the woodwork. The amusing fact is that only days after the fiasco in the Supreme Court, Naeem blatantly named the source of the “penti penture” story as Agha Murtaza Poya, the veteran politician and ex-owner of The Muslim newspaper, only to be rebuffed by a stout public denial by Mr Poya hours later.

The fact is that I shunted 15 senior bureaucrats from the Punjab to Islamabad because they were allegedly close to the Sharifs. The fact is that I retained two senior secretaries whose close relatives were contesting on PTI tickets. The fact is that my Home Minister was on the PTI’s Task Force on Terrorism. The fact is that I even leaned on the Advocate General appointed by Shahbaz Sharif to resign his constitutional position in order to be neutral. The fact is that the only favour I ever did anyone was to Imran Khan when I allowed him to hold rallies in the centre of the small towns on his campaign trail in Southern Punjab, which was contrary to the SOPs of the elections. The PTI accepted the results as free and fair, a fact corroborated by FAFEN and over 100 international observers. Dual citizens and people who have immigrated to Canada can have their citizenship taken away, according to a new bill that went into effect last week in Canada.
The Canadian government has justified creating a two-tier citizenship system by saying it would counter the threat of “jihadi terrorism.”
The C-24 Bill could also easily be used against non-terrorists — for example a journalist who is convicted of a “terrorism offence” in another country for reporting on human rights violations by the government.
Under this law, the only Canadians who can never lose their citizenship are those born in the country and who do not have another nationality (and are not eligible to apply for another nationality).

Kind of explains why official pakistani policies in the past decades were such an utter failure since such stupid analysis when dealing with pakistan ensured that Pakis could read India's playbook better than the Indian babudom's reading of pakistan's playbook (which is nothing if not predictable as we all know).
The KC Singh types from officaldom in New Delhi (and there seem to be plenty of such clones) don't seem to get it through their immeasurably thick skulls that Pakistan's desire to destroy India -- it is a zero-sum game. There is NO win-win situation that is possible with Pakistan or with China, that does not involve severe loss for India.
One view is to ignore Pakistan, harden Indian defences against terrorism, bypass Pakistan via Iran for Central Asian and Afghan connectivity, build a missile defence and nuclear triad as nuclear deterrent and let Pakistan wrestle with its demons till the outcome is clear. This is premised on the belief that Pakistan faces inevitable economic decline and unsustainable ethnic crises which may either force its army to sue for peace with India or simply keep it embroiled in debilitating internal wars.
False choices. The other alternatives are to (a) isolate pakistan from any policymaking as it serves no purpose -- it is futile to engage pakistan as there are no positive outcomes -- until Pakistan demonstrates actionwise that is willing to engage. (b) Stabilizing pakistan has never resulted in good outcomes for India, and any act of engaging pakistan will only serve to stabilize or at the very least aid it in playing its double game against India.
All that pakistan will do is again start pretending that it is doing India a giant favour by giving India MFN status, even as it does all of the following that KCS outlines below while pretending to engage India.
This simplistic approach ignores the revival of Pakistani economy, the impact that $46 billion of Chinese infrastructure building may have on Pakistani finances, the rebalancing by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani of his nation’s relations with India and Pakistan, and the Saudi unhappiness over Pakistan tilting towards the Iran-China axis and not militarily responding to its urging for Pakistani intervention in Yemen.
This "revival of the pakistani economy" has not happened yet -- KC Singh just make a grand proclamation without stating exactly what revival is happening, if we ignore all the Pakistani accounting involved in their official numbers? if KC singh bothered to even do some elementary reading of the rates at which pakistani are going to get power, it is not going to be affordable to anyone but the richest in pakistan. So cr@pping in his Nehru Suit at the thought of an strong and revived pakistan as this KS Singh is doing has no basis in reality.
The Taliban summer offensive in Afghanistan, despite the Pakistani commitment to bring the group to the negotiating table, may mark the beginning of a new kind of militant leadership in Afghanistan that could be utilising the Al Qaeda-ISIS rivalry.
None of these Al Qaeda or ISIS would have the werewithal to train or arm its militants or even operate in pakistan without the blessing of the paki army and paki government (which sides with the army on such matters) -- and PM Modi "engaging" pakistan will not stop either the paki army or the paki government from NOT sending Al Qaeda or ISIS, so engaging pakistan is at best irrelevant when it comes this so-called ISIS thread (these are all pakistani jihadi proxy threats and have nothing to do with ISIS in syria.
Combined with this is the renewed attempt by Pakistan to pump LeT operatives into the Kashmir valley to tap the emerging militant and pro-Pakistan public rhetoric after BJP’s dalliance with the Peoples Democratic Party. As in the 1990s, the external in Af-Pak is meeting the internal in J&K, with the additional danger of ISIS influence finding hold elsewhere in India where a section of Muslim youth is alienated.
Unlike the 1990s the border is better guarded and this government unlike nehruvian morons of the past has taken the fight to the enemy whenever they resorted to shelling to provide cover for infiltrators. As for local support to pakistani view, that is on both sides of the aisle. A NC conference politician just made a speech asking Indians to respect the pakistani flag, so it has nothing to do with the emergence of the BJP-PDP coalition -- this only demonstrates KC Singh's political bias.
There is nothing in the article that specifically states the exact outcomes that would be different from previous governments engaging pakistan without adequate actions by Pakistan -- Pakistan has refused to prosecute the culprits of 9/11 and has effectively nixed the trial and released the main culprit Zakhiur Rahman Lakhvi and does not even bother to portray it as anything less than a stick in India's eye. They relish their actions, and India is supposed to reward such behavior with "engagement"?
The appointment of a former Director, Intelligence Bureau as envoy for Af-Pak and West Asia indicates that the Modi government is looking at the entire Islamic world to India’s West through an intelligence-security prism and not a diplomatic-cultural construct.
This defeatist thinking of looking at Pakistan through the "diplomatic-cultural" construct for 60 years which is exactly why we are where we are today, with pakistan. Recently, someone by the name of Vishal gave me a phone call. He told me that he was a regular reader of my blogs on Dawn.com and suggested that I write about the Mari Mata Temple at Ratan Talao. According to him, Hindus were being discouraged from performing their religious rituals in this temple.
However, according to an agreement in 1978, the Maharashtra Punchayat had agreed to let the taziya be placed inside the temple, only to be removed when demanded. The parties in the agreement were Janu Bhai Feroze Shah and Mohan Gaikwar of the Maharashtra Punchayat.
Mehmooda does not mind Hindus visiting the temple and performing their rituals there. However, Hindus say they feel insecure when they go inside the temple.
Comment: Based on similar past instances a Fake Blasphemy Case should not be ruled out, in the future

Whenever we debunk such crap articles, we should may be storify our response and post on twitter as well?
Personally I prefer to also make an attempt to engage the writer himself. True to their character, usually they don't respond. If that happens, balls stays in his court and he can be taken to task the next time he spouts non-sense again .. that he always cowardly shoots and scoots without defending what he spouts.
Just my opinion that this way the debunking effort generates more value?

Peeved Pak rakes up visa denial to official for its mission
NEW DELHI: The current trough in Indo-Pak ties is likely to continue with the two countries now locked in a face-off over denial of visa by the Indian authorities to a Pakistan foreign ministry official.
While the visa has been formally denied, Islamabad has refused to withdraw the application it had filed on behalf of the official saying the denial by India was "unprecedented".
Pakistan wanted to post the official at its high commission here and had applied for a diplomatic assignment visa for him. The Pakistani authorities have now taken up the issue with India saying this was 'unacceptable'.
The official in question has not served in India before, a fact cited by Pakistani authorities to claim that India had no reason to deny him visa. The Pakistan high commission here has a sanctioned staff strength of 110 and, according to Islamabad, the official's appointment was meant to fill in a position approved by India.
Sources here admitted that visa had been denied to the official but did not give any reason for the denial. It is learnt though that the Indian authorities are peeved at denial of visa last month to two yoga instructors whom the government had hired to lead the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Islamabad on June 21. According to Pakistan though, the applications filed by India for the yoga instructors are still under consideration.
Pakistan has also alleged in its protest that parents and relatives of diplomats posted here are also being made to wait for months to get their visas. In some cases, the applications had to be withdrawn because of the delay.
Pakistan also raised the issue of what it described as maltreatment of its visiting citizens by the Indian authorities. It took up the issue of Pakistani women being "harassed'' by policemen in Jaipur despite them carrying valid visas and other travel documents.
The visa imbroglio is the latest in a series of events which have marred attempts to impart even a semblance of normalcy in ties. Ties went into a freefall after the release of Mumbai attacks mastermind Zaki- ur Rehman Lakhvi, rendering ineffective PM Narendra Modi's successful outreach in March in the form of a visit by foreign secretary S Jaishankar to Islamabad.
Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said in her recent press conference that talks with Pakistan could take place only in an environment free of terror and that this "zone" could be created only if Pakistan took action against Lakhvi. The two countries were involved in another acrimonious exchange last week over elections in Gilgit-Baltistan which India described as an attempt by Islamabad to "camouflage its forcible and illegal occupation of the regions".
