If you are referring to unlocking value (whether real or inflated bubble-like valuations) from real estate, that only works if the other pieces of the economy are in place and economic growth is exploding along with incomes growing.

Also, the bigger problem with Pakistan is that the fundamentals are weak. Say for example that he overnight unlocks $5B of value by selling govt land. All it means is that instead of going to the IMF with a begging bowl now, he goes there after 6 months.

Chinese at the local level use sales of government land to fund their budget. It will work in the short-term even for bakistan. There is enough money in Bakistan for it to sell prime government land in Lahore, Islamabad and Karanchi for a first round revenue generation at least.

Correction on two counts.

It should be GDP per capita.. Secondly, pakis should revise these earlier sialkoti stats on "GDP per capita" now that they have at least 207 M momeens instead of the usual trotted out number of 180 M, a number that has been used for the past ten years to artificially elevate their status on the global ranking scale. Furthermore that number should be adjusted for the current currency exchange rate as well.

So, first things first.

Their current size of GDP is US$283 Billion (2018) per wikijanaab. For 207 Million inbreds (2017 population stats), that equates to $1367 per momeen.

By the way, the total GDP size (2018) is actually $277 Billion based on the current exchange rate of 124 pkr to 1 US$. This will further bring down their GDP per capita to $1340 per momeen.

Pakistan is close to be a water-scarce country. It may run dry by 2025, according to the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources. This means that if we don’t conserve water, we may have a drought. There will not be enough water to drink, forget about growing crops and making products in factories. A shortage of water will be a disaster for the economy.To store water, we need to build the dams. Since the provinces were divided over Kalabagh Dam, the government has decided to build Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dams, which have political consensus.

Given the seriousness of the matter, one must appreciate the intentions of both the CJ and the PM as well as laud the efforts of Pakistanis at home and abroad for their generous contributions. However, there appears to be some disagreement over how the project is being funded and whether building a huge dam is the only solution. One argument against the PM-CJ fund: the government can raise only Rs60 billion in five years at the current pace, Rs33 million per day.

Reality check # 2 !

Even this is doubtful because the momentum created by the PM’s call will not last long. In other words, this fund could meet the same fate as the “qarz utaro mulk sanwaro” program by Nawaz Sharif or the ‘President’s Relief Fund’ by General Pervez Musharraf.

The second argument is not against the fund as such, but the dam itself. Hassan Abbas, an expert in water resources, argues that Pakistan does not need a mega dam, but mega vision. He says we have enough water in our natural system and global warming will result in more rainfall and an increase in the water supply. Abbas says our system has 145 million acre feet (MAF) of water per year. Agriculture needs 50 MAF, industry needs 10 MAF while household consumption is 17 MAF. We have twice as much water as we need – there is one problem though, a bulk of it is available in the monsoon only.

Now this is an "out of box" solution for Paki water crisis by a "concerned" Paki ( Hasan Abbas)

Abbas says we need dam-equivalents. Unlike a huge dam, these are small interventions in a water system and do the same thing as a big dam. However, they don’t have the same disadvantages as big dams.

Abbas says our 3,500-kilometer river network has 42 canals, which consume 95% of our water. Dam-equivalents can be set up at each of these canals.He says the first intervention can divert water to farmers with modern irrigation methods. He gives the example of a dam-equivalent in Rohri Canal, which draws 8.5 MAF from the Indus River.This will reduce waste and spare water.The second intervention can divert some of this spared water to Karachi.The third intervention will create a navigation channel between Kotri and the open sea, which can help people earn a living.

Sounds good on paper . ! Run it through the "technical Chinis" under the auspices of CPEC !

KARACHI – Another patient of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) virus has died on Monday in Karachi raising concerns for the deadly virus.
Haider Ali, 25 was diagnosed with Congo virus after which he was admitted to Jinnah Hospital where he succumbed to sickness.Congo fever is a tick-borne viral disease which is mainly transferred to humans from pets. Its symptoms include fever, flu, bloody urine, vomiting and nose bleeding.

The congo virus, if it remains unnoticed, could prove to be fatal. In Pakistan, overall 11 cases of this virus have been reported in 2017, of which four patients recovered. Five people were discharged with no diagnosis of the illness.

The virus is known as the Nairovirus because of its spread from ticks or through contact with the blood or other fluids from infected animals and humans.In Pakistan, this virus was first reported from the regions of Baluchistan and KPK in 1976; at that time it was not a much prevalent disease but up to 2000, its victims increased.

As far as I am aware, ( exported minded ) Pakis have not "discovered" Congo for emigration purposes ( or maybe, the visa requirements for even Congo are too stringent for illegal Pakis to make it there! ) . But it is a confirmed fact, that "Paki peacekeepers " were/ or are in Congo . Therefore, they are the most likely culprit or "vehicle" ( if you may want to call it that !) responsible for bringing this "deadly" virus into Pakistan's largest city

GUJRANWALA – A white-beard senior citizen was arrested for racing and one-wheeling in Gujranwala, local media reported on Monday.
Gujranwala traffic police arrested the suspect named Chan Elahi after receiving complaints about his dangerous bike riding style on the roads of the city at different times.

The arrest of the old man in a crime is not less than a surprise as usually young persons are apprehended on these charges.

Kudos to the Gujranwala Police . Sporting a "white" beard and speeding at the same time, does not absolve you from committing a " dangerous crime"

A video of the purportedly fearless senior citizen is also circulating on social media. The video which was published in 2017 shows the suspect riding a motorbike at neck-breaking speed and showing different stunts.

The former Punjab chief minister taking into account the circulating Financial Times report of the government reviewing the CPEC agreement, on his official Twitter handle voiced his displeasure and termed the government ‘irresponsible’.“People of Pakistan are shocked at the irresponsibility of PTI government, which is trying to undermine Pakistan-China strategic partnership, by speaking in the voice of our enemies on CPEC! We will resist & reject such conspiracies, our Chinese friends should rest assured,” stated his tweet.

What a country ! Debate going on between two political parties as to who is more "loyal" to the Chinis . The PTI Party or The Nawaz PML ! Nothing about what is the best interest of Pakiland !!!

According to the FT report, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s commerce adviser Abdul Razak Dawood was reported to have said: “Chinese companies received tax breaks, many breaks and have an undue advantage in Pakistan; this is one of the things we’re looking at because it’s not fair that Pakistan companies should be disadvantaged.”

The "Advisor" comes from a prominent business family of Pakiland ( one of the 21 business families who "own" Pakiland !) so his "dig at the Chinis , IMO is understandable !

Dawood had earlier today denied the FT report claiming that his statements were taken out of context. Chinese embassy in Islamabad also issued a strong-worded statement, saying that the FT report was based on "distorted and misquoted information.

IMO, Dawood is being readied to be sacrificed to placate the "angry" Chinis. And Shahbaaz is making "political hay" out of this

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recently appointed Adviser Razzak Dawood has expressed that he was misquoted in an interview over the terms of deal regarding the China Pakistan Economic Corridor. In a clarification issued Monday, the adviser expressed that he would soon issue a detailed response over his interview carried by the Financial Times, in which the adviser was quoted as saying that the government would review the multi-billion dollars corridor.

IMO, Truth is the casualty here . He should not, with his remarks - have been THAT frank about "game-changer CPEC ." He will be offered as a sacrificial lamb goat to appease the Chinis, who have made it known, in no uncertain terms, that they do not "agree" with the Advisor .

“The previous government did a bad job negotiating with China on CPEC — they didn’t do their homework correctly and didn’t negotiate correctly so they gave away a lot,” Abdul Razak Dawood was quoted by the paper.

Announcing the details on Sunday, Euro Oil (Pvt) Ltd Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Syed Sohail Ahmed said that plantation drive was not confined to merely government or other organizations but to every individual of the country.

Inaugurating the campaign by planting six saplings ( planting just SIX saplings , and getting cheap publicity ! what about the rest 49,994 ) alongside senior regional manager Syed Ibrahim Gillani, national sales manager Umer Mehdi, marketing manager Atif Mehmood, and scores of oil dealers and citizens, the CEO highlighted that Euro Oil was not only the best fuel provider in the country ( blowing own horn !) but it also participated in social works with great zeal and fervour for the betterment of the society.

“The campaign is the inception of the green and developed Pakistan,” he said while talking to media in Sahiwal and elaborated that the company would plant and help secure 50,000 saplings on roadsides, railway lines and other public places.

Highlighting the performance of the company, the officer said that over 30,000 dealers have been appointed in Sahiwal alone ( to sell synthetic oil products ! Typical Paki bragging ! ) and soon the supply of fuel would start from the Sahiwal as well.

On the occasion, the citizens lavished praise on the company for its price and supply plan, hoping that the firm would not compromise on quality and would bound the fuel stations in this regard as well.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s press conference was twice the duration of his meeting with the visiting US delegation led by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. This alone tells you how much fluff is floated to mask a tragic downturn in Islamabad’s relations with Washington – and this at a time when the country can really do without external wrangling and bad blood.

The force of this fact is such that even a pastmaster at stretching words and spinning yarn by the tonnes like the foreign minister could not pull off the one message he so desperately wanted to convey: that the Pompeo visit was not another signpost on the road to nowhere, and had been useful. That the next day newspapers had positive headlines had less to do with the substance and reality of these relations than with the fact that we are living in an age of self-deception that is deliberately promoted at the cost of the truth.

And it did not take long for the truth to bare itself. The joint statement at the end of the US-Delhi 2+2 dialogue made it clear that all that Foreign Minister Qureshi was at pains to press home before TV cameras was worth no serious consideration. Both Delhi and Washington have trained their guns towards Islamabad on the counter-terror front. They have held, without mincing words or hiding intent, Pakistan responsible for spread of terror through proxies. They have named groups with Pakistani connections and have recalled past events like Mumbai, Uri, Pathankot to point to the alleged plots of terror whose perpetrators need to be brought to the book.

This is a hefty charge-sheet and runs totally counter to the idea FM Qureshi and others have propounded at home: that Washington had to restrain Delhi’s aggressive designs on the eastern border in order for Pakistan to play a more effective part in stabilising its border with Afghanistan and focusing undivided attention on engaging the Taliban for a peaceful settlement of the conflict. Far from restraining Delhi, US secretaries of state and defence Pompeo and General Mattis, along with US Chairman of Joint Chiefs Gen Dunford, all nurtured Delhi’s narrative that if there was one problem in the region that needed to be sorted out it was Pakistan.

So whatever Secretary Pompeo had been conveyed by Islamabad’s ruling elite had zero impact on Washington’s view of the situation. It did not prevent the Trump administration’s highest-ranking representatives from singing in unison with Delhi and in demonising Islamabad. If this is not a downturn in bilateral relations, it is hard to imagine what else could qualify this designation.

Where do we go from here with the US? Part of Pakistan’s decision-making machinery is high on emotion and tilting heavily in favour of letting Washington do what it pleases to do without bothering too much about diplomatic niceties. This school of thought points to the potential of building a more productive network of bilateral relations with closer neighbours (Russia, Iran and of course China) and focusing on the domestic agenda of reform and economic progress to ward off American pressure. For now, proponents of this idea seem to pull a lot of weight and dominate discussions about the future of relations with the US.

Admittedly, this is a tempting stand to take. This seems to take on the same colour as the chief justice’s fund-raising for dams: let’s do it on our own, folks; chip in, break the begging bowl and build a truly sovereign nation. However, the problem is that building dams with our own money is hard (so far there are under two billion rupees in the fund and we have raised in terms of basic construction cost around 400 billion). Even harder is to create dykes against a superpower that is conniving with a regional power to make life difficult for a country that is cash-strapped and embroiled in big perpetual domestic political dramas that involve battles against its own citizens and their representatives.

So far, our antidote to Delhi-Washington’s toxic behaviour has not gone beyond running up to the Chinese and getting them to say a few nice words in our favour. True, there is a China card, and to some extent there may also be a Russia card, but these are cards that the Chinese and the Russians control and not us. They will decide the extent to which they will respond to our need to have an alternative, an option of productive friendship other than Washington’s which has become manipulative and exhausting.

The Chinese of course are the real alternative and but anyone who has even superficially studied the Chinese way of working in the past three decades would not put too many bets on Beijing sticking its neck out for Pakistan every time we hit a bump against India and the US. The burden of their relations with Delhi and Washington – while too much – is something that the Chinese are too happy to carry because their economic and commercial interests bind them in a tough-love situation with these countries. Beijing will not rock the boat with India and the US because of us.

So the grandstanding on ‘we have alternatives’ needs to be squared with ground reality, and false ego trips need to be curtailed. We have a serious situation with both Delhi and Washington and we aren’t really in a position at the moment to pretend otherwise. These pressures could be better managed had the new government shown a real desire to take charge of foreign policy – and not become a prisoner of its own rhetoric that domestic affairs are more important than external affairs.

It was a small yet instructive peep into the government’s interest in pressing foreign affairs challenges when cameras caught PM Imran being directed to shake hands with different members of the visiting US delegation as he was casually taking his seat after greeting just Secretary Pompeo out of the entire lot. Generally, leaders prepare themselves for meaningful meet-and-greet exchanges and mark all individuals in the entourage, to give the impression that they know who they are meeting and why.

The implications of this outsourcing of foreign policy debate under the false pretext of domestic compulsions are quite deep. This means that there cannot be any substantive debate in parliament or in the ruling party about the way forward with Washington or Delhi. There can be no new ideas or out-of-the-box thinking because the government in charge simply isn’t interested in leading from the front on this crucial front.

More to the point, the absence of debate is bound to either promote the type of useless fluff FM Qureshi is prone to churning out or lead to the meaningless rhetoric of ‘Down with America’ to guide policy. Very few minds will be focused on the substance of the problems on our frontiers that are connected with growing international consensus that we have not done enough to choke trouble-makers at home.

While the US did manoeuvre our grey categorisation in the Financial Action Task Force meeting, the reality is that even better friends – our alternatives – were unable to save us from this shock. Clearly, we have learnt no lesson from that setback and we are back to making the silliest possible excuses for a floundering foreign policy.

Believe it or not, the top-most among these excuses is that our diplomatic disasters are the responsibility of the media in Pakistan, which does not fully support the state. This is another way of saying that a storm would be sunshine if only the headlines had said so. What Washington and Delhi are doing against us is not half as bad as what we are doing to ourselves – drowning out calls for sane debate in childish game shows and entertainment.

I recently visited Pakistan for the first time in my life. My conclusion of that journey is clear: Pakistan ruined my future trips to any country of the world forever. The country has raised the bar so high for me that it will be difficult to find a place as energising and invigorating as Pakistan.

Starts on a positive note, indeed

I have had the opportunity to visit many countries in the world, but I had never been as stimulated as I was in Pakistan. The colours and styles of the traditional kurtas are mind-blowing. The religious devotion and spirituality of the people are heartwarming. Their passion for cricket is contagious. The rhythm and lyrics of Qawwali are so energising that I found very difficult not to dance. Pakistanis’ respect and promotion of their traditions and culture is so compelling that I came back feeling a little Pakistan myself.

The humility and generosity of Pakistani people is indescribable. I felt like a king during the ten days that I spent there. I was pampered and taken care of by every Pakistani that I met. Pakistan is the best kept secret of the world. Anyone would expect to encounter hordes of tourists in this magical country. The reality, however, is still very different. I was one of the few international tourists that was sightseeing the Shahi Qila or renting a boat at Attabad Lake. (No "problems" obtaining NOC from ISI )

For someone like me who avoids masses of tourists as much as possible, Pakistan was paradise on earth. I do not expect this lack of tourism to remain for a long time. Hence, I always tell people avid for adventure to visit Pakistan before the world learns about the beautiful secret that Pakistan is. As a proud Mexican who lives in the United States, I go around sharing with everyone my new love for Pakistan, the country that stole my heart.

Aneel Musarrat, a Manchester-based tycoon, on Monday arrived in Islamabad along with Sahibzada Amir Jehangir. He is one the richest men in the UK and is considered a close friend of Imran Khan .

He is expected to hold consultation with the prime minister on the construction of the cost-effective houses, and also on new policies for overseas Pakistanis. However, Musarrat is not expected to receive any contracts or investment but rather he will be consulted due to his expertise.

The Kaptaan is a "firm believer" in networking . This is one "great" example . Hope he has done "due diligence" to ensure that Aneel is not a member of The "Ahmedi Church"

A big win for Pakistan's trans community as The Gender Guardian's first batch graduates

An impromptu celebrity performance, students dressed to impress and plenty of selfies — it appeared to be a graduation like any other.

But this Sunday, the graduation of The Gender Guardian’s first batch of students marked a milestone for the transgender community. 17 students received their diploma certification for formal education and skill-based training after completing short courses at the newly opened school. Although the focus is more on skills-based training, such as cooking, beautician courses and stitching, there were students like Khushboo — thrown out of her family home when she was still in class eight — who are getting formal education.“We started this school with the purpose of educating and uplifting the transgender community that has otherwise been marginalised in society,” founder Asif Shahzad says. “People think transgender people can either sing and dance or beg on the streets, but nobody has ever explored their talent fully.”

It is a cliche to say that education is the key to a better life, upward mobility blah, blah, blah. Hope that these Ayesha/ Abduls do not end up as "sexual objects" in the hard-core Islami environs of Pakiland

Located in Lahore’s Model Town area, ( just 175 km SW of La-Whore, a transgender in Sahiwal was almost burnt to death last week !) the Gender Guardian offers 12 years of academic matriculation from primary level to college, in addition to offering vocational training. Students are also given legal aid each weekend by volunteer lawyers who educate them about the basic legal rights of a transperson.

Shahzad initiated this venture in April of this year with a plan to provide a platform that would not only educate the transgender community but also help them enter mainstream society.

The event started off with Quranic recitation, ( does the Mullah Brigade know of this "insult" to Malsi ) which was followed by a few speeches by students and teachers.

The graduating students hope to apply for jobs or set up businesses with the help of loans provided by the school, the government and other NGOs. Admissions for the next batch are now open.

As long as they are "kept off the streets" during nite time hours, it is fine

Transgender activist, model and actress Kami Sid was a chief guest at the event and said she felt proud of the achievement.

With basic learning, vocational training, and awareness programmes, the Gender Guardian has given hope to the 30,000-strong transgender community in Lahore.

The graduation ceremony was held in collaboration with Exploring Future Foundation (EFF), Tour to World, CSC- Empowerment & Inclusion Programme, Go Green, LUMUN and Rahnuma.

Paki Mullahs should take "due note". Western NGO's along with some "liberal" sections of Paki society are infesting major cities and corrupting the "local Hijra culture" in the name of "transgender equality".

Pakistan’s assurance of support to Iran in its row with the US on the nuclear deal during Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent visit to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan is being noticed both at home and abroad. No wonder the Saudi Information Minister "rushed" to Isloo and sought meetings with the Khan and others !

At home, people wonder what the support indicates for the future of Pak-Iran relations at a time when our country seems to be slipping into greater Saudi influence. Is it a balancing act between Saudi Arabia and Iran? Or does it denote some reduction in Riyadh’s influence? Those who are attempting to gauge the relationship are using the religious-ideological lens.

The only framework that could be applied to this situation is a short-to-medium term political adjustment necessitated by a realistic assessment of the challenges facing Pakistan where it has shared experience with Iran.

The promise to Javed Zarif is akin to the adage, ‘not out of love for Ali but to spite Ma’awiya’ (referring to the historic rivalry between the 4th Caliph Ali and his political rival Ameer Maawiya), describes the situation best. The two neighbours have come together not to join hands as friends but to create an impression of geo-political unison — to ward off pressure from the US against their respective nuclear programmes and its military ambitions in the Middle East and South Asia. The assurance looks like an effort to cobble together an informal bloc under the Chinese and Russian umbrella.

If there is some credence to this "collusion" between Iran and Pakistan, then IMO, Raheel's job in Saudia might be in jeopardy or at the minimum, his trustworthiness might be looked at with suspicion !

This is a tactical move in which chances for a long-term engagement seem limited. It will certainly not turn Pakistan away from playing a role in the Saudi security architecture that poses as a contradiction to major growth in Iran-Pakistan relations. Chances are that the newly arrived civilian leadership didn’t have much to do in designing the meeting.

So, Siddiqa is floating the hypothesis, that it is not the puppet's ( Immy's) idea but the puppetmaster (fauj ) who is pulling the strings towards this new policy .

The idea of increasing people-to-people contact or increasing trade between the two countries is a non-starter. The fear of US sanctions mixed with geo-political suspicion has not allowed Pak-Iran bilateral trade to grow for over two decades now. Pakistani banks cannot issue letter-of-credit (LC) to businessmen for trading with Iran.

During my research on Pakistan’s trade with Afghanistan, India and Iran, I found out from the business community that the banking limitations have made smuggling a major source of economic interaction. With Pakistan struggling economically, the situation may remain unchanged for a while. What Islamabad could do, however, is develop an infrastructure on its side of the border. At present the facility is shoddy and hardly helps visitors entering or exiting Pakistan. Even toilets are hard to find on the roads from Balochistan up to the Iranian border. Iran offers much better facilities to the visitors.

As it stands now, Pakistan is firmly in the "US Camp" towards its attitude with Iran . The Saudis with their "dollar sweetener" ensure that !

The people-to-people contact suffers mainly due to suspicion over extremism within the security establishments on both sides. These are lingering socio-political issues that may not resolve in a day. The sectarian tensions continue to simmer as dangerous propaganda by sectarian groups thrives in society.

The key to improved relations however lies with the GHQ that started to take initiative to rebuild bilateral links after former Army Chief Raheel Sharif’s spat with visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in 2016 over the Kulbhushan Jadev case. Later, Pakistan joined the coalition of 39-Sunni Muslim states initiated by Saudi Arabia, with Sharif as its head despite Iran’s concerns,

There is absolutely no doubt that the Bad Sharif is extremely Anti Shia !

While Pakistan’s parliament played a critical role by passing a resolution in 2015 to limit Pakistan military’s role in the Saudi-Yemen war, the country’s military needed to make extra effort to balance relations between the two countries – hence General Qamar Bajwa made a visit to Iran in November 2017 with a message that Pakistan’s role in Saudi-led activities would not affect relations with Iran.

Were the Saudis aware of Bajwa Double Game

Currently, Pakistan is Saudi Arabia’s mainstay — in providing it security and fulfilling its geo-political ambitions. Also, the relations are easier to keep compared with Iran, as both Islamabad and Rawalpindi can build their activities around the key personality of Prince Muhammad bin Salman.

However, the 2017 Bajwa visit to Tehran was an opportunity for Iran to discuss concerns regarding threats to the nuclear programmes of the two neighbours. Though the US sanctions against Pakistan are limited and of an entirely different nature, Iran may have played up the threat of the US targeting Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.

If Iran becomes "closer" to Pakiland, Iran - India ties will be "affected" as well !

Interestingly, Pakistan is accused of covertly helping Iran and North Korea against Trump’s sanctions. In his recently published book, Pakistan’s Nuclear Bomb: A Story of Defiance, Deterrence and Deviance, Hassan Abbas examines Pak-Iran nuclear relations from 1986. Apparently, the two states actively exchanged nuclear material and know-how between 1987 and 2001.

Xerox Khan sold centrifuge designs to Iran , with the full knowledge of the Fauj . This is nothing new ! Gen (Retd) Mirza Aslam Beg ( A Shia ) has always "admired" Iran !

Clearly, till late 1990s, Pakistan’s security sector was on the learning path of benefits and limitations of nuclear deterrence. Indeed the (late) General Hamid Gul had spoken about a meeting at Joint Chiefs Headquarters in 1992 where Pakistan Air Force had expressed frustration that the nuclear programme was blocking the possibility of procuring American fighter aircrafts and other major weapon systems.

According to Wikileaks, in 2004, Pervez Musharraf, known for his closeness with the US, had tried to dissuade Iranians from pursuing nuclear ambitions.

Mush, I suspect, is a Shia, pretending to be a Sunni !

In any case, a brash and aggressive Trump may not be bothered by Pakistan’s nuclear programme, which is also an assurance to the Saudis for their protection from a hostile Muslim state other than Israel. Pakistan’s nuclear programme as a security wall for Saudi Arabia also limits the latter’s nuclear ambitions. For the US, the problem with Iran’s nuclear programme is not just about the capability but the way in which it would add to its confidence and encourage it to continue playing a role in the Middle East where Donald Trump needs space to implement his Middle East peace plan.

POTUS wants to see a grand alliance of Israel, and Saudia against Iran !

At a time when most Arab states would be happy to turn a blind eye to the Palestinian issue, Iran seems to be the only Muslim country covertly challenging Israel’s dominance over the Palestinians.

In a world greatly absorbed by its security and economic issues, the human rights of Palestinians run the risk of being ignored as much as the Kashmiris. Iran seems to have worked on Pakistan’s concern for the future of the Kashmir issue by bringing the matter into the discussion. It was after the meeting between Zarif and Khan that Foreign Minister Qureshi thanked Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei for his “strong and unswerving support for the just struggle of the people of Kashmir”.

India could do well to remember that in the final analysis, the Ummah factor supercedes all other considerations !

From the Trump’s lens, both Iran and Pakistan play a significant role in their respective regions — which is what seems to have brought Tehran and Islamabad together. While Iran is a leader of the Shia Islamic world and a significant player in the Middle East, Pakistan hopes to carve a leadership role in South Asia and the Sunni Muslim world with assistance from China and Russia.

Though their paths are not likely to meet and the two countries will keep challenging each other in future, as in Afghanistan during the 1990s and 2000s, Iran and Pakistan will use the moment to gain their tactical benefits.

Temporary alliance or strategic shift by Pakiland ? Indian analysts will have to decide !

CPEC confusion - Editorial

When the new government sat down with the Chinese to ‘renew’ cooperation under the CPEC project, the day was marked more by confusion than fanfare.

It all began with the report in the Financial Times which quoted the prime minister’s commerce adviser Abdul Razak Dawood as saying that CPEC “unfairly benefits Chinese companies” through tax breaks and many other incentives that are unavailable to local counterparts. Not only that, he went on to say that the deals under CPEC would be reviewed, adding that “we should put everything on hold for a year so we can get our act together”.

These words were published on the same day as the country heard that Chinese and Pakistani delegates sat down together, and after a long meeting, agreed to broaden the base of the CPEC arrangement as well as open it up to involvement by ‘third countries’ that might be friendly to both China and Pakistan.

Unfortunately, the two messages did not mix well. Soon a ‘clarification’ arrived from the commerce adviser, asserting that he was “quoted out of context”. This, of course, begs the question what the original context was since the words uttered by him are quite clear.

While both governments spoke of renewing ties, broadening the base of their cooperation and inviting others to participate in their bonhomie, at least one of the ministers let it slip that there are powerful apprehensions about the entire deal within Pakistan. Long before we heard the words of the commerce adviser, who hails from the business community, we have heard various trade and business bodies articulate the very same concerns in very similar language.

Going forward, it is necessary to heed the substance of both voices that spoke on Monday. There is no doubt that CPEC should continue, and certainly grow with time. China is arguably Pakistan’s most important neighbour and has been a consistent friend through the decades. But as we move forward, it is important that Pakistan’s own interests, and political traditions, be kept front and centre.

To what extent does the new government wish to heed the voice of the business community when formulating its approach to CPEC? How far is the new government willing to go to honour its commitment to the electorate to conduct an audit of some CPEC projects like the Orange Line train, or to bring greater transparency to future CPEC negotiations such as those around the ML 1 project, or to place details of past agreements before parliament?

All of these are commitments made by the PTI before and after the election and we need to know where they stand today. Following Mr Dawood’s remarks, the Chinese embassy in Pakistan also issued a strongly worded reaction denying the interview altogether. It is clear that the time to choose the future course of CPEC has arrived.

LAHORE: Talking about the ongoing fund-raising campaign for construction of dams in Pakistan, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday said dams were not constructed with the help of charity, ARY News reported.“Resolution for the issues of the country does not lie in money, but in rectifying the system of governance,” he said while talking to media in Lahore. He said dams were not built through tall claims as well.Speaking about the by-elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said his party would defeat the ruling party in the by-polls. “We have successfully dealt with difficult times earlier and would do so in the future as well.”

The petitioner in the case had sought action against Abbasi and PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif for trying to defame state institutions.The court also ordered Abbasi to pay one million rupee in surety bonds.

Abbasi said he respected the judiciary and he would appear in the next hearing of the case to defend himself. The federal government’s fund-raising campaign for Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams is in full swing, with support of the Supreme Court and provincial governments.
The fund formed to collect donations for construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams has crossed Rs 2 billion mark, as per latest statistics. The account was opened following the Supreme Court orders to collect donations from people across Pakistan and those living abroad. KARACHI: With the march of time, the families of the people, who perished in deadly Baldia factory inferno, may have come to terms with the loss of their loved ones, but they still await justice to give them a sense of closure. At least 260 workers were burnt alive when the ill-fated multistorey garment factory was set ablaze in the city’s Baldia Town on Sept 11, 2012.An anti-terrorism court, which is legally bound to decide a case within seven days after indictment under the anti-terrorism law, has still a long way to go before it decides the case even after the passage of six years.

Not to forget that in the "original 9/11" Paki hand in the planning of this terrorist act was suspected via the person of Omer Saeed Sheikh ( presently languishing in a Paki jail for killing Daniel Pearl ) and Mush's right hand man - Gen (Retd) Mahmud Ahmed , an Islamist cloaked in a Army uniform !
