The fight broke out inside the restaurant before moving to the parking lot, the affiliate said. It escalated from fists and feet, to chains, knives and gunfire, KWTX said, citing a police spokesman. Multiple injuries to include multiple fatalities.. Officers were on scene when shooting started. No officers have been injured.

He was one of two victims found with gunshot wounds in the same area around 4 a.m. in New York.

Nine people were shot dead as rival motorcycle gangs clashed in a car park in Waco, Texas.

Police said at least two gangs were involved in the shootout which began after an argument inside the nearby Twin Peaks restaurant spilled outside, the local ABC News station reported. It added that several other people were injured. Some customers hid inside a freezer when the violence began.

Police found a number of guns along with chains, knives, bats and clubs at the scene.

Waco police sergeant Patrick Swanton told the Waco Tribune: “A lot of innocent people could have been injured today. These are very dangerous, hostile criminal biker gangs.”

The shooting began despite the presence of 12 police officers – including a Swat team – and Texas state troopers, either at Twin Peaks or in the area, in order to monitor a meeting between two biker gangs. A third gang may also have been present.

The officers fired shots and “saved lives by keeping this from spilling into a busy Sunday morning,” Sgt Swanton said.

He added that managers at the Twin Peaks restaurant knew about “issues” relating to the biker gangs but “continued to let those groups of people into their business”. “The management wanted them here,” he said.

The newspaper said that numerous people had been arrested.

Michelle Logan, 37, who was in the Twin Peaks at the time and knows some of the people involved in the shooting, told the Tribune: “There were maybe 30 guns being fired in the parking lot, maybe 100 rounds. They just opened fire.”

“There’s a lot of people in the hospital, a lot of people shot.”

She described the shooting as a “set up”.

Waco police reported on their Facebook page: "Multiple injuries to include multiple fatalities at Twin Peak Shooting. Officers were on scene when shooting started. No officers have been injured."

The police Twitter feed had previously warned people to avoid the Central Texas Market Place, where officers were working at a shooting at a Twin Peaks restaurant.

A meeting of several rival biker gangs in the US state of Texas turned to carnage on Sunday after an argument left at least nine dead and 18 more injured following a shootout.

The fight between five rival gangs turned a local bar into a “shooting gallery”, a local television station in Waco, Texas reported, as the tattoo-covered bikers unloaded their weapons at each other. There were between 150 and 200 gang members in the restaurant at the time.

Patrick Swanton, a sergeant with Waco police, told the local KWTX news station that the shooting had started just after midday local time [7pmBST] when the gangs, which had been at loggerheads for some weeks, had a disagreement. Before violence broke out the meeting had focused on turf and recruitment, he said.

Sgt Swanton said eight people died at the scene of the shooting and another person at a hospital. He told the Waco Tribune-Herald that the nine killed were all members of biker gangs.

A witness who was having lunch across the parking lot at Don Carlos Mexican Restaurant said he and his family had just paid their bill and had walked into the parking lot when they heard the crackle of gunfire break the peace of a Sunday afternoon.

"We crouched down in front of our pick-up truck because that was the only cover we had,” the man, who asked not to be identified, told KWTX.

Sgt Swanton said the fight quickly escalated from “fists and feet to chains, clubs and knives, then to gunfire” leaving the area in “absolute chaos” as police and tactical SWAT teams arrived and began firing their own weapons as they sought to contain the violence.

No bystanders, police or restaurant workers were killed in the incident which saw two major roads being closed and the area around the Twin Peaks bar – a chain renowned for its scantily clad waitresses – cordoned off as ambulances moved in to take away the wounded.

Local police said they had been working for several weeks to diffuse growing tension between the biker gangs, with a local district attorney publicly warning of brewing trouble with out-of-town gangs in interviews two weeks ago.

On Sunday night local police advised local people to stay in their homes and keep away from the area, fearing that the rival gangs would be seeking retaliation and violence could flare in other areas.

A video shot from a nearby restaurant and posted on social media showed many of the bikers lying on the ground as crouching police covered them with weapons drawn.

"Someone's been shot," says one of the bystanders, pointing towards a man lying on the ground.

Saul Cornejo Bravo was in the Don Carlos Mexican Restaurant across the car park from Twin Peaks when the shots were fired.

"We head the gunshots and then these two biker guys come running in and dive into the restroom," he told The Telegraph, "And then a third man runs in and says ‘they’re shooting! they’re shooting!' and suddenly everyone is ducking for cover under the tables."

The 19-year-old economics student who is a part-time waiter at the restaurant said the biker gangs were regulars at the Twin Peaks on Thursday nights, and that he had been surprised to see so many congregating early on a Sunday morning.

"It did seem strange, but we see them often and they've never been fighting before. It all happened so quickly, but once people saw that the police were right there on the scene dealing with the situation, they calmed down.

"I was amazed when I heard on the news that nine had died. I saw five people injured, including one guy who looked dead, but I was just shocked that so many people got hurt that quickly."

Officers who had had anticipated trouble and staked the restaurant out in force before shots were even fired, said that they had recovered more than 100 weapons from the scene.

Following the shootout there were reports that some Waco bars and restaurants were closing early due to fears over more violence.

Police in Waco, Texas said on Monday that 192 people were being arrested in connection with a biker gang shootout that left nine dead and 18 injured a day earlier.

Those under arrest will face charges of engaging in organised crime, police said in a statement. A simmering feud among rival biker gangs boiled over at Twin Peaks sports bar on Sunday, leading to a deadly gun battle in the parking lot.

The Texas alcoholic beverage commission is closing Twin Peaks, located at a shopping mall in the central Texas city, for at least seven days "due to the ongoing danger it presents to our community," police said.

The commission is conducting a parallel investigation and may take further action, according to the police statement.

Parts of downtown Waco were locked down, and officials stopped and questioned motorcycle riders. Agents from the FBI and federal bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives were assisting local and state authorities in the investigation.

Separately, Sgt Patrick Swanton said police officials have been threatened since the shooting.

The violence erupted shortly after midday in the Twin Peaks restaurant in central Texas where members of at least five rival gangs had gathered for a meeting.

Preliminary findings indicate a dispute broke out in a bathroom, escalated to include knives and firearms, and eventually spilled into the restaurant parking lot, according to police.

Authorities increased security to quell fresh attempts at criminal activity in the town, Mr Swanton said.
"I was amazed that we didn't have innocent civilians killed or injured," Mr Swanton said.

The interior of the restaurant was littered with bullet casings, knives, a club, bodies and pools of blood, he added.

Authorities were processing the evidence at the scene, south of Dallas. About 150 to 200 bikers were inside during the shootout.

Police and the operators of Twin Peaks were aware of the meeting in advance, Mr Swanton said, and at least 12 Waco officers in addition to state troopers were outside the restaurant, part of a national chain that features scantily clad waitresses, when the fight began.

Officers shot armed bikers, Mr Swanton said, adding that the actions of law enforcement prevented further deaths. It was immediately clear whether any of the nine dead were killed by police officers.

Parnell McNamara, McLennan county sheriff, whose office is involved in the investigation, said all nine who were killed were members of the Bandidos or Cossacks gangs.

In a 2014 gang threat assessment, the Texas department of public safety classified the Bandidos as a "Tier 2" threat, the second highest. Other groups in that tier included the Bloods, Crips and Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.

The Bandidos, formed in the 1960s, are involved in trafficking cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines, according to the US department of justice.

(CNN)—Like some families, biker gangs tend to settle scores among themselves. Privately, if not quietly.

But on Sunday, a feud between two rival biker groups -- the Bandidos and Cossacks -- broke into the open in a big way.

At least nine people were killed when a fight erupted at a Waco, Texas, restaurant, with the clash escalating in minutes from fists to guns.

Eighteen people were hospitalized, according to Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton, who said that all of the victims were bikers. He declined to name the gangs involved.

Photos from the scene showed bikers wearing the insignias of the Cossacks, Bandidos, Scimitars and Vaqueros. But according to a memo sent to law enforcement officers in the wake of the shooting, a member of the Bandidos, and a former informant who infiltrated biker clubs, the beef was primarily between the Bandidos and Cossacks.

It boils down to territory, said the informant, who goes by the name "Charles Falco."

The bottom rocker refers to a state name on the back of a biker's vest. According to Falco, it can indicate where someone is from, as well as claim territory for that club.

"The Cossacks decided that they were big enough now to go ahead and wear the Texas bottom rocker, and basically tell the Bandidos that they're ready for war," he said.

Sunday's fight, Falco predicted, will make matters exponentially worse between the two gangs.

"It's definitely on, now," he said. "As long as they exist, they will be at war."


Bulletin warned of 'potential war'


That potential has apparently been on the radar of Texas authorities for some time.

WFAA, a news station in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, reported on a law enforcement bulletin from May 1, which detailed growing tensions between the Bandidos and Cossacks.


"Violence between members of the Bandidos OMG and the Cossacks MC has increased in Texas with no indication of diminishing," the bulletin read. "The conflict may stem from Cossacks members refusing to pay Bandidos dues for operating in Texas and for claiming Texas as their territory by wearing the Texas bottom rocker on their vests."

WFAA reported the bulletin was issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety, which declined to tell CNN whether or not the document was genuine. It also declined to provide a copy of it.

The bulletin reportedly said that officers had tried to reduce tensions between the groups, warning them about the "unwanted attention a potential war would bring."

It detailed specific moments in the escalating rivalry, including:

• March 22 -- Approximately 10 Cossacks forced a Bandido to pull over near Lorena, Texas. They attacked the Bandido member with "chains, batons, and metal pipes before stealing his motorcycle." On the same day, a group of Bandidos approached a Cossack at a truck stop in Palo Pinto County. The Cossack member was attacked after he refused to remove a Texas patch from his vest.

• April 7 -- The FBI received information that some 100 Bandidos planned to travel to Odessa, Texas, in early April to start a "war" with Cossacks there.

• April 24 -- The FBI released a report on three recent fights between the Bandidos and Cossacks in east Texas.

"What this is, is if you go back to being a little kid and you're playing 'King of the Hill.' This is 'King of the Hill.' And in Texas, the Bandidos are at the top of the pile, and everybody wants to be at that top level," said Chris Omodt, a former cop and co-author of the book, "Breaking the Code," which is about the Hells Angels.

"It's over the patch, wearing that patch in that state. It's based on that, period," he said.

'We are not a gang'


Among those killed Sunday was one member of the Bandidos, according to Jimmy Graves, a high-up member of that club.

Graves says he's not aware of the Bandidos having a problem with Cossacks, but "evidently they have an issue."

"They (Cossacks) want to be outlaws," he told CNN's Kyung Lah.

The U.S. Justice Department characterizes the Bandidos as a "growing criminal threat" with at least 2,000 members in 14 countries. It says the gang is involved in the production, transportation and distribution of drugs.

The Justice Department had no such synopsis for the Cossacks, but the book "The One Percenter Encyclopedia: The World of Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs from Abyss Ghosts to Zombies Elite" says they were founded in Texas in 1969 and have a major presence in Australia.

Graves took serious issue with the Bandidos being characterized as a gang. The motorcycle club's website highlights noncriminal endeavors such as its Easter party in Germany or its toy drive in France.

"We are not a gang. We do not do gang things. We are not affiliated with gangs," Graves said. "We didn't do nothing here. We're fighting for our rights. They're saying lies on TV, and telling everybody that Bandidos are after police officers. That's never been."
