BANGALORE: In a major breakthrough, the Dakshina Kannada police have managed to arrest underworld operative Madoor Isubbu (36) alias Yusuf who has been living in Saudi Arabia since May 2004.

Isubbu, who hails from Madoor area of Ullal in Dakshina Kanada district, is an accused in four cases of murder and several cases of extortion and assault.

He is one of the prime accused in the sensational December 12, 2006 murder of BJP leader Sukananda Shetty, which led to communal riots in Mangalore.

He is also charged with attempting to kill three prominent lawyers in Mangalore who were associated with the Sangh Parivar and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Stating that Isubbu is fully cooperating in the interrogation, sources told The Hindu that they hope to extract crucial information about the manner in which certain communal organisations harness the underworld to carry out their dirty work.

Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Ajai Kumar Singh said that Isubbu was arrested by a team led by Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao on Wednesday when he was on his way to meet an old associate at the Yeshwantpur railway station here.

The Dakshina Kannada police served a red corner notice on Isubbu in November 2009, which prevented him from leaving Saudi Arabia.

Acting on the notice, the Saudi police arrested him in August this year when he tried to fly out of the Riyadh airport.

Strangely, the Saudi police did not inform their Indian counterparts about the arrest and instead put Isubbu through rigorous interrogation.

The sources said that based on information provided by Isubbu, Saudi authorities also arrested several Indian origin persons associated with the Popular Front of India, a hardline Islamist organisation.

Ever since his arrest in Riyadh, which was widely reported in the Indian media, the Karnataka police had stepped up their efforts for his extradition.

But it was not until late November that they managed to make some headway in their efforts with the Interpol acting as a mediator between the two countries.

Delhi University professor and human rights activist S.A.R. Geelani, who had once been sentenced to death for an alleged role in the 2001 Parliament House attack but later acquitted, has cautioned against south India going the “Gujarat way.”

“The South is going the Gujarat way,” Mr. Geelani, who opened a meeting organised by the Justice for Maudany Forum here on the International Human Rights Day. “That has to be checked; people here should check this trend.” He noted that south India was a relatively peaceful place, but the situation was changing now.

Mr. Geelani alleged that Abdul Nazir Maudany, chairman of the People's Democratic Party, who is now in a Bangalore jail, had been framed by the Karnataka police for allegedly prompting the Bangalore serial blasts of 2008 and stadium blast in April 2010.

Mr. Maudany had spent nine-and-a-half years in a Tamil Nadu jail for no fault of his and was later released when he was found not guilty of abetting the Coimbatore blasts, he said. “Instead of saying sorry to him and compensating for his loss, the system has again framed him [in the Bangalore blasts case].”

Mr. Geelani said Mr. Maudany's “real crime” was that he stood for the cause of the oppressed Muslims, Dalits and Adivasis. That was why he was framed in a terrorist case and bail was denied to him on flimsy grounds, he claimed.

Mr. Geelani drew a parallel between him and Mr. Maudany. Following the December 13, 2001 attack on the Parliament House, he recalled, he had been branded by the Intelligence agencies and the media as a hardcore terrorist. Their projection of him was so effective that even senior police officers were scared to come near him. In Mr. Maudany's case too, he said, the media and the police had fed the people with all kinds of falsehoods.

Sebastian Paul, former Ernakulam MP and chairman of the Justice for Maudany Forum, {Who is this new entrant in the anti-India forum ? } said he had recently met Mr. Maudany in a Bangalore jail. He was being denied basic rights of a prisoner. The lights and cameras in Mr. Maudany's cell were on all the time in order to harass him.

DEHRADUN: A joint team of Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) led by Manikant Mishra on Friday night arrested a 33-year-old Pak-trained Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist identified as Ghulam Nabi Sheikh alias Javed Qureshi along with his cousin Tanveer Ahmad from Patel Nagar.

Uttarakhand IG (Garhwal Range) M.A.Ganpati said the arrests were made from the residence of 21-year-old Tanveer Ahmad during an intensive checking and search operation conducted by police on the eve of Passing -Out-Parade(POP) held at Indian Military Academy (IMA) on Saturday.

So the gist of what he says is that Vajpayee government created a deep cover counter-terror strategy that included targetting Muslim localities in each state, so local Muslims turn against Pakistan backed terrorists. After 2004 changeover to UPA, the counter terror network was rudderless, and started getting exposed. Is this a plausible explanation for Purohit, Aseemananda and Sadhvi case? The Crime Branch CID {Chennai} police have busted a major racket that operated from Mumbai and circulated fake Indian currency notes (FICNs) across the country. Four persons, including three Bangladeshi nationals, have been arrested so far.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the FICNs were printed in Pakistan and smuggled to India through Nepal and Bangladesh. The modus operandi of the suspects was to send agents, mostly natives of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bangladesh, to different parts of the country and exchange the FICN of Rs. 1,000 denomination, agency sources said.

The agents would make small purchases in hotels, shops, petrol bunks etc with the fake note and get the balance (original currency). After taking some commission, they would deposit the money into a bank account operated from Mumbai. At least Rs. 80 lakh was let into circulation in the last two years, the sources said.

On August 7 this year, Ajijur Rahman, a Bangaladesh National, went to a restaurant in Polur (Tiruvannamalai district) and ordered to pack some food. When he offered a Rs. 1,000 note, the cashier sensed foul play and handed over the accused to the local police. The police arrested two more Bangladeshi nationals Ajay Biswas and Thorickul Islam, who were staying in a lodge at Polur. Fake notes of Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 denomination with face value of Rs.2.03 lakh were seized. After the case was transferred to the CBCID, Additional Director-General of Police Archana Ramasundaram formed a special team to investigate the source and supply network of the accused. It came to light during investigation that the two of the accused were overstaying their visa period while the third illegally entered the country across the border in West Bengal.

The accused told investigators that after exchanging the fake notes, they deposited the genuine currency in the bank account of Shaikh Mohammed Azam of Mumbai. The team followed specific clues and nabbed Azam in Mumbai in the first week of December.

On interrogation, he confessed that money was deposited into his account from different States. Azam had sent the fake notes through agents for circulation to almost all States.

“They confessed that the fake currency was printed in Pakistan and routed through Nepal or Bangladesh to India. The fake note looks original and it would be very difficult for a common man to detect. At least Rs. 18 lakh was deposited in the bank account of Azam. They have exchanged not less than Rs. 80 lakh FICNs since January 2009,” Inspector-General of Police M.N. Manjunatha said.

“They have been detained for questioning,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Jawed Shamim said.

They told the police that they had gone there to enquire about visa, but they had fake passports, police sources said.

Hemant Karkare’s widow accused Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh of trying to play politics with her husband’s death, and said she had no doubt that the chief of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) was killed by the Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists who carried out the 26/11 attack.

She would have known if her husband felt threatened by anyone, Kavita Karkare told The Sunday Express.

Ship docked in Mumbai 'invites Hindus to convert to Islam'

Mumbai : A Kuwaiti flagship vessel docked at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has come under the scanner of security agencies after some members of the crew were allegedly found distributing a 12-page pamphlet named Nimantran Patra, underlying words “inviting people practising Hinduism to a better religion called Islam”.

The vessel, CGM Everest, steered by a Pakistani captain, Sayed Hader, had travelled from Karachi Port. It had been allowed to leave JN Port and it had set sail, but it was then asked to return to port. IG (Konkan region) Parambir Singh said the ship has been detained.

The pamphlet is from the Islamic Dawa and Guidance Centre, based in Kuwait. The crew of 33 includes an Egyptian engineer, Karim Rehman, and two Pakistanis apart from the captain.

The incident, according to senior security officials, is the first reported instance in India where a vessel travelling in international waters has been used for religious propaganda. ....

Officials have noted the “target audience” for the conversion pamphlets were specifically Indians as all 12 pages were written in chaste Hindi, along with a covering letter.
