Malaysian PM cleared of graft after funds in account declared a Saudi gift

Malaysia's attorney-general cleared Prime Minister Najib Razak of any criminal offences or corruption on Tuesday, closing investigations into a murky multi-million-dollar funding scandal that his opponents had hoped would bring him down.
Najib was buffeted last year by allegations of graft and mismanagement at the debt-laden state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and by a revelation that about $681 million was deposited into his personal bank account.(wow! that's a lot of moolah by any standards!wonder, what the quid pro quo is - 100% adoption of (Saudi) Sharia Law, instead of the "lite-Sharia" presently prevailing there, proscription of temples, churches and gurdwaras ? )
But Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali said the transfer was a gift from Saudi Arabia's royal family, adding that no further action needed to be taken on the matter.

Najib, who denied any wrongdoing and said he did not take any money for personal gain, welcomed the attorney general's statement.
"The findings followed a thorough investigation by the relevant institutions, and he has confirmed what I have maintained all along: that no crime was committed," Najib said in a statement.
Opposition party leaders denounced the finding, saying the appointment of the attorney-general by the prime minister in the midst of the crisis suggested a conflict of interest.

Apandi told a news conference no criminal offense had been committed by Najib in relation to three investigations submitted by Malaysia's anti-graft agency.
"I am satisfied with the findings that the funds were not a form of graft or bribery," he said.
"There was no reason given as to why the donation was made to PM Najib, that is between him and the Saudi family," he said.
The involvement of the Saudi royal family is an unexpected twist in the saga over the funds transfer and the troubles of 1MDB, whose advisory board Najib chairs.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had earlier said only that the funds were a political donation from an unidentified Middle Eastern benefactor.

Apandi said $620 million was returned to the donor in August 2013, about five months after the transfer, because it had not been utilized.
He did not clarify what happened to the remaining $61 million that was not returned or explain why it had taken so long for news of the return of the funds to be released.

Even his fiercest internal critics, such as influential former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, accept that he cannot be unseated.
Najib, who needs to build support ahead of the 2018 election, after scraping to only a narrow victory in the last polls, said the scandal had been "an unnecessary distraction".
"Now that the matter has been comprehensively put to rest, it is time for us to unite and move on," Najib said.
The scandal has shaken investors in Southeast Asia's third-biggest economy and rocked confidence in the coalition led by UMNO, which has held power since independence in 1957.
The ringgit slumped by more than 20 percent in 2015 and has continued its slide this year, weighed down by global oil prices and political uncertainty.
"The attorney-general is satisfied with the findings, but it remains to be seen whether the public is satisfied and will put the 1MDB scandal to rest," said Hak Bin Chua, ASEAN economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

After the scandal broke in mid-2015, then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail - who had led investigations of 1MDB - was replaced by Apandi, a former judge with strong ties to UMNO.
"The attorney-general should not have been involved in the decision affecting the PM because he was appointed by the PM," said Lim Kit Siang, parliamentary leader of the opposition Democratic Action Party.

Trevor Phillips, the former chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said it was disrespectful to assume that Muslim communities would change.

Mr Phillips added that people of certain backgrounds in the UK are not going to change their views ‘simply because we are constantly telling them that basically they should be like us’.

The Muslim Council of Britain has insisted that members of the religion are compatible with UK life,(the author is probably not familiar with the Islamic concept of Taqiyya and believes that the idea of demanding change from Muslims has promoted discrimination.

And last week David Cameron launched a new drive to counter extremism by calling on more Muslim women to learn English ( for this to happen, under their "tradition", spousal permission would be required and most likely will not be given, as most of them are being looked upon as 'baby producers' only !)in the hope that they will turn into more powerful moderating forces.

Muslims, who first arrived in Britain about three centuries ago as sailors working for the East India Company, had a UK population of 2.7million in 2011 - dramatically up from 1.6million in 2001.

Answer to that actually is going to determine to a large extent, what kind of struggle/conflict it would be (now we surely know there would be a conflict) and who the ultimate winner would be.

Sweden is preparing to expel up to 80,000 asylum seekers who sought refuge in the country last year, according to its interior minister.

In an interview with Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri published today, Anders Ygeman said he estimated that about 60,000 to 80,000 of 2015’s record number of asylum seekers would be expelled and forcibly deported or would voluntarily leave after their applications were rejected.

It is feared by the government that many of those who will leave will go into hiding, according to the newspaper.

“We have a big challenge ahead of us. We will need to use more for this and we must have better cooperation between authorities,” Mr Ygemen was quoted as saying.

“I think that it could be about 60,000 people, but it could also be up to 80,000.”
The minister said the asylum seekers would be removed from the country by charter aircraft, but that the process would take many years.
*(Why not transport them by cattle class "cruise liners"? They would be far more comfortable than the rust buckets and ribs that they used to get to Europe in the first place.)

His spokesman Victor Harju later confirmed Mr Ygemen’s estimate, adding that the minister was simply applying the current approval rate to the record number of asylum seekers that arrived in 2015 and that the “rate could of course change”.

This week, Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven pledged more resources for the police to deal with the country’s refugees.

The Scandinavian nation reversed its open doors-policy on immigration late last year and has since introduced border controls and identification checks to slow the flow of asylum seekers.

At the end of last year, Sweden's migration minister Morgan Johansson said: “We’re willing to do more than anyone else. But even we have our limits.

“We can handle the 160,000 people who came this year. But we can’t handle it if there are another 160,000 people next year.

“Our whole asylum system would break down.”

Around 163,000 asylum applications were made in 2015 in Sweden, which, along with Germany, has been one of the top destinations for refugees and migrants entering the EU.

On Tuesday, 22-year-old Alexandra Mezher, a staff member at an asylum shelter for unaccompanied children near Gothenburg, was stabbed to death.

A 15-year-old asylum seeker was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Islam and Christianity will fight a 200/300 year fight starting now. We will not face a blowback until one of them wins it outright - most likely Christianity by nuking Muslims back to 7th century, if enough shit hits the fan. All we have to do is to strengthen & arm ourselves to defend against whoever wins it. Saudi Billionaire - Prince Al- Walid "Upset" At Donald Trump

A Saudi prince may have just claimed the throne after a war of words with Donald Trump once again on Twitter.
Prince Alwaleed bin Talal stated on the social media website that he’s bailed the billionaire out twice – and suggested the GOP presidential frontrunner might need his help a third time.
The altercation was initiated by Trump, who retweeted a badly Photoshopped image showing the prince with Fox News host Megyn Kelly, calling him a co-owner of the network:

The prince’s tweet included news stories showing he bought Trump’s yacht in 1991, which had been turned over to creditors when he was $900 million in debt, reports Buzzfeed.

He also included a link to a story which claimed Alwaleed bin Talal was part of the group that bought New York City’s Plaza Hotel from Trump in 1995 in a ‘bailout’ valued at $325 million.
The two clashed on Twitter last year when Prince Talal reacted to the Republican presidential frontrunner’s proposal that all Muslims should be temporarily barred from entering the United States.

The prince branded Trump a disgrace and said he should pull out of the race for the White House.

A 17-year-old girl has exposed the scale of Islamic sex tourism in India where Muslim men from the Middle East and Africa are buying 'one month wives' for sex.

Campaigners for Muslim women's rights said while short term 'contract marriages' are illegal in India and forbidden in Islam, they are increasing in Hyderabad, in southern India, where wealthy foreigners, local agents and 'Qazis' – government-appointed Muslim priests – are exploiting poverty among the city's Muslim families.

The victim, Nausheen Tobassum, revealed the scale of the problem when she escaped from her home last month after her parents pressurised her to consummate a forced marriage to a middle aged Sudanese man who had paid around £1,200 for her to be his 'wife' for four weeks.
She told police she had been taken by her aunt to a hotel where she and three other teenage girls were introduced to a Sudanese oil company executive. The 'groom', Usama Ibrahim Mohammed, 44 and married with two children in Khartoum, later arrived at her home where a Qazi performed a wedding ceremony.
According to Inspector Vijay Kumar he had paid 100,000 Rupees (around £1,200) to the girl's aunt Mumtaz Begum, who in turn paid 70,000 Rupees to her parents, 5,000 Rupees to the Qazi, 5,000 Rupees to an Urdu translator and kept 20,000 Rupees herself. The wedding certificate came with a 'Talaknama' which fixed the terms of the divorce at the end of the groom's holiday.
"The next day he came to the house of the victim girl and asked her to participate in sex but she refused. She is a young girl and the groom is older than her father," Inspector Kumar told The Telegraph.

Her parents reassured him they would persuade their daughter and told her she would be punished if she did not. Instead she ran out of their tiny one room home in Hyderabad's Moghulpuri neighbourhood and was rescued by a police patrol. The police arrested the groom, the victim's aunt and the Qazi, and issued a warrant for her parents' arrest – Nausheen is a minor under Indian law and cannot marry until she reaches 18. Her parents are now in hiding but will be charged with arranging a child marriage, 'outraging the modesty' of a woman, and criminal conspiracy.
Inspector Kumar said there are dozens of illegal short term contract marriages in the city, and that the Sudanese man they arrested had come to Hyderabad after a friend in Khartoum told him he had taken a '40 day wife' during an earlier visit.
"If a Sudanese wants to have sex, he has to pay three times more [in Sudan] because there are far fewer girls there, or he takes a second wife. In India the girls are coming for a cheaper rate and they are beautiful. Even if they are only staying for a few days they are doing this kind of illegal marriages for sex," he said.

He said the visitors want to marry because they believe prostitution is forbidden under Islam. Poor families agree to contract marriages because they have many daughters and cannot afford to pay for all their weddings.
Instead, they have a series of one-month contract 'marriages' to fund their own genuine wedding.
Shiraz Amina Khan of Hyderabad's Women and Child Welfare Society, said there were up to 15 'contract marriages' in the city every month and that the number is rising.
"They come to Hyderabad because it has maximum downtrodden families. Thirty to forty per cent of families are going for the option of contract marriages to relieve their poverty. It has to be stopped," she said.

Nausheen Tobassum, who is now living in a government home for girls said in an interview before she was placed in care, that she had filed a complaint to stop the same thing happening to other girls.
"I didn't know what was happening and I agreed in ignorance. They forced me. They changed my date of birth certificate and made a fake one, where I was shown as 24 years old. They exploit girls and that's why I went to police. I had to show courage to go to police against my parents. I don't want to go back to my home, I am scared," she said.

Executive Summary of the Marrakesh Declaration on the Rights of Religious Minorities in
Predominantly Muslim Majority Communities

25th-27th January 2016

WHEREAS, conditions in various parts of the Muslim World have deteriorated dangerously due to the use of violence and armed struggle as a tool for settling conflicts and imposing one's point of view;

WHEREAS, this situation has also weakened the authority of legitimate governments and enabled criminal groups to issue edicts attributed to Islam, but which, in fact, alarmingly distort its fundamental principles and goals in ways that have seriously harmed the population as a whole;

WHEREAS, this year marks the 1,400th anniversary of the Charter of Medina, a constitutional contract between the Prophet Muhammad, God's peace and blessings be upon him, and the people of Medina, which guaranteed the religious liberty of all, regardless of faith;

WHEREAS, hundreds of Muslim scholars and intellectuals from over 120 countries, along with representatives of Islamic and international organizations, as well as leaders from diverse religious groups and nationalities, gathered in Marrakesh on this date to reaffirm the principles of the Charter of Medina at a major conference;

WHEREAS, this conference was held under the auspices of His Majesty, King Mohammed VI of Morocco, and organized jointly by the Ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs in the Kingdom of Morocco and the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies based in the United Arab Emirates;

AND NOTING the gravity of this situation afflicting Muslims as well as peoples of other faiths throughout the world, and after thorough deliberation and discussion, the convened Muslim scholars and intellectuals:

DECLARE HEREBY our firm commitment to the principles articulated in the Charter of Medina, whose provisions contained a number of the principles of constitutional contractual citizenship, such as freedom of movement, property ownership, mutual solidarity and defense, as well as principles of justice and equality before the law; and that,

The objectives of the Charter of Medina provide a suitable framework for national constitutions in countries with Muslim majorities, and the United Nations Charter and related documents, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are in harmony with the Charter of Medina, including consideration for public order.

NOTING FURTHER that deep reflection upon the various crises afflicting humanity underscores the inevitable and urgent need for cooperation among all religious groups, we

AFFIRM HEREBY that such cooperation must be based on a "Common Word," requiring that such cooperation must go beyond mutual tolerance and respect, to providing full protection for the rights and liberties to all religious groups in a civilized manner that eschews coercion, bias, and arrogance.

BASED ON ALL OF THE ABOVE, we hereby:

Call upon Muslim scholars and intellectuals around the world to develop a jurisprudence of the concept of "citizenship" which is inclusive of diverse groups. Such jurisprudence shall be rooted in Islamic tradition and principles and mindful of global changes.

Urge Muslim educational institutions and authorities to conduct a courageous review of educational curricula that addesses honestly and effectively any material that instigates aggression and extremism, leads to war and chaos, and results in the destruction of our shared societies;

Call upon politicians and decision makers to take the political and legal steps necessary to establish a constitutional contractual relationship among its citizens, and to support all formulations and initiatives that aim to fortify relations and understanding among the various religious groups in the Muslim World;

Call upon the educated, artistic, and creative members of our societies, as well as organizations of civil society, to establish a broad movement for the just treatment of religious minorites in Muslim countries and to raise awareness as to their rights, and to work together to ensure the success of these efforts.

Call upon the various religious groups bound by the same national fabric to address their mutual state of selective amnesia that blocks memories of centuries of joint and shared living on the same land; we call upon them to rebuild the past by reviving this tradition of conviviality, and restoring our shared trust that has been eroded by extremists using acts of terror and aggression;

Call upon representatives of the various religions, sects and denominations to confront all forms of religious bigotry, villification, and denigration of what people hold sacred, as well as all speech that promote hatred and bigotry; AND FINALLY,

AFFIRM that it is unconscionable to employ religion for the purpose of aggressing upon the rights of religious minorities in Muslim countries.
