Ha! Did he really say "timers?" That might be a Freudian slip, and the American Pres. would indeed have reason to be afraid.

I have first hand info that if not for BJP cadres, the entire sorry 100-200 lot of AAPtards would have been beaten to within an inch of their lives and left for dead in the streets of Kashi.

By general public btw. BJP workers are working over time to defuse tensions.

Suraj wrote:Frederic: Very good points, and thanks for the interesting take on local scene. Things were different in TN in the late 90s when I was there. Good to see the changes for the better. The Om Allah stuff in Madurai is quite heartening to hear. The state of the Madurai temple was really disappointing to my young eyes when I first saw it in the mid 1990s - at least it didn't have a mosque abutting it like in Kashi or Mathura.

Suraj, I have met several Muslim Tamilians ( not through BJP party work, but through my Yoga camp work.) And invariably I have come off with the impression that with time, patience and genuine efforts, a milieu like Indonesia (where a Muslim bard is not afraid of getting quadrified if he sings RamaKatha) is very much possible in TN.

Having said that, there is a potent and very dangerous Muslim extremist fringe group, the Al Ummah fanatics, that use ritual murder as their terror tactic. The local police knows about this (who the supporters are, who the financiers are, how much money is being "gifted" to the perpetrators after each ritual murder etc). The local TN police intelligence apparatus knows about this. This group is centered primarily around the Madurai- Melappalayam area.

As to what is being done to bring this menace under control, it is purely a political question. Two factors come to the mind.

1) Vote bank fears. Not as focused as WB or Kerala, but still some pressure points are at the disposal of the Mullahs.
2) The idiotic and dangerous belief of the successive state governments that the violent Islamic fringe in TN could be "controlled" and "channelized" selectively for the regime's interest and against the regime's opponents.

Name one regime in history that tried to use the Islamic fringe as their rage-boys and survived to tell the tale! Osama and CIA anyone?

Jaya too is guilty of this despicable tactic. Ref the Vishwaroopam fiasco.

BTW DMK has always been known as a Muslim friendly party in TN.

As to why Modi did not utter a single word, I have a feeling he was aiming for Amma's support (pre-poll or post-poll) when the campaign began a few months ago. Recall that Modi and his Companion Cavalry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companion_cavalry were not yet convinced of the "wave" at that point. If anything, he did not want to upset his so called "personal rapport" with Amma in TN.

I have inputs from reliable sources that the state BJP had a decisive and effective input in the topics being selected for Modi's speeches in TN. Fishermen's plight for example. So if the Al Ummah "ritual murders" were left out, there would have been genuine political compulsions (however unsavoury it might seem post-facto) on the ground at that point to force their preclusion.

If memory serves, Modi in the first round did not go hammer and tongs against Didi either in WB. I still believe that Amma might after all play a role in NDA post hustings. Since this possibility cannot be discounted, Modi has not taken off the gloves against Amma, yet.

But despair not, people like Sandhya Jain have been diligently tracking the "ritual murders". So is Pon.RadhaKrishnan, the current state BJP president. Nothing will be forgotten. Nothing will be forgiven.

Well boys, it's May 7 in Bharat. Hopefully another good day for the NaMo juggernaut.

Wife is in UT this week. Nainital shut down till 6 PM due to election. Seems like the whole route from Kathgodam (the railway head) to Nainital was full of NaMo posters/hoardings. A dude named Bhagat Singh looks like all set to win from Nainital/USN. INC doesn't seem strongly in the picture.

2011 Advani bomb case: Panna Ismail, Bilal Malik arrested in Andhra
Chennai: In a gun battle that lasted over 12 hours, two key suspects involved in the 2011 Advani pipe bomb case and recent murders of BJP and Sangh parivar unit leaders, were arrested from a house at Puthur in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, a top official said.

"Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik have been arrested," Tamil Nadu DGP K Ramanujam said. With this, three of the four suspects in the cases were arrested by Crime Branch CID of Tamil Nadu Police. Based on information from Fakruddin, who was arrested on Friday, police surrounded a house at Puthur in Andhra Pradesh, some 120 km from Chennai, around 3 AM.

Tense moments prevailed in the area as a gun battle broke out between the police and suspects. Ramanujam said a police inspector was injured when he was attacked by the accused before they locked themselves in the house. "Police had to open fire in self-defence. (one of the key suspects) Panna Ismail was injured..", the DGP said. The injured inspector has been admitted to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit of the Sri Ramachandra Medical Hospital in Chennai where hospital sources said his "condition is critical but stable".

Altair ji, a lot of us here have already subscribed to 5fourty3, back when he was asking for Rs. 543 for it. He is projecting a massive BJP wave and in fact he has already called the election for the NDA even before the last 2 phases of polling. Whether he is reliable or not will be clear on 16th May.
