Pakistan
An overwhelming majority (94%) of Indians see Pakistan as a threat, citing terrorism as a major reason. Other reasons identified include a belief that the Pakistani army sees India as its enemy, that Pakistan has nuclear weapons, and that it claims sovereignty over Kashmir. Even so, 89% of Indians agree that ordinary people in both countries want peace, 87% agree that a big improvement in India-Pakistan relations requires courageous leadership on both sides, and 76% agree that India should take the initiative.
From here:Pakistan
Only 10% of Indians consider the relationship with Pakistan to be strong, with only 1% defining it as very strong. Instead, a very large majority (84%) consider that relationship to be weak, with 51% describing it as very weak. And only 40% of Indians would like relations with Pakistan to grow stronger over the next 10 years, with an only slightly smaller proportion (37%) indicating that they would like relations to grow weaker.
An overwhelming majority (94%) of Indians say that Pakistan poses a threat to India’s security, with 78% rating this as a major threat and only 2% saying it does not pose a threat. Indians who consider Pakistan a threat indicate that they do so for multiple reasons, with the top four being that terrorists from Pakistan launch attacks inside India, that the Pakistani military sees India as its enemy, that Pakistan has nuclear weapons, and that Pakistan claims sovereignty over Kashmir.
For all their perceptions of Pakistan as a threat, most Indians see some grounds for improved relations with their neighbour. A very large majority, 89%, agree that ordinary people in both countries want peace, and 60% strongly agree with this statement, with only 7% disagreeing. A similarly large majority (87%) agree that a big improvement in India-Pakistan relations would require courageous leadership in both countries, and 76% agree that as the bigger country, India should take the initiative towards peace. A substantial majority (72%) also identify trade and economic cooperation as ways to help bring about peace with Pakistan.
Yet strikingly, slightly more than half of Indians (56%) consider that there can never be complete peace between the two countries. Moreover, Indians are evenly divided on whether this is a good thing: 48% agree it is acceptable if India and Pakistan are never completely at peace; 48% disagree. In any case, two-thirds of Indians (67%) consider that peace will only be possible with an agreement on Kashmir.

The History Project: Inspiring Indian and Pakistani Children to Rethink the Past
This pdf from their website - https://www.dropbox.com/s/t3uj1mlzb4229 ... ct%20F.pdfThree young Pakistanis – Qasim Aslam, Ayyaz Ahmad and Zoya Siddiqui – are providing schoolchildren in India and Pakistan with an opportunity to critically analyze, evaluate and question significant events in their nations’ shared history and heritage.
The History Project, comprising excerpts from three Indian textbooks and nine Pakistani textbooks, provides students an illuminating comparison of the ways that key historical events – leading up to partition – are taught in schools in both countries.
Last month, Aslam, Ahmad and Siddiqui visited four schools in Mumbai – officially launching The History Project in India. Next month, the trio plans to introduce the project to schools across Pakistan, in the hope that it will spark healthy debate, underpinned by curiosity, impartiality, and an open-minded look at the tumultuous epoch that is India and Pakistan’s shared history.
According to Aslam, the inspiration for The History Project came in 2005 from Feruzan Mehta, the then Country Director (India) for Seeds of Peace, an international NGO that seeks to inspire and train new leaders from conflict zones to build a more peaceful future. The inspiration grew in the ensuing years, and Aslam and Ahmad finally decided to make their shared dream a reality two years ago.

Rise of assertive Nationalism
assertive Nationalists played an important role in the National

What a fall & humiliation for someone who was once the army chief & the most powerful person in Pakistan. What a comeback for a civilian leader Nawaz Sharif who was on the brink of getting executed ala Bhutto. Musharraf committed a blunder by releasing Nawaz Sharif. He should have followed Zia Ul Haq & finished the job. This is the takeaway from all these events.Peregrine wrote:

Benazir murder case: Pervez Musharraf granted bail
RAWALPINDI: Former dictator and arrested suspect Pervez Musharraf was granted bail in the Benazir Bhutto murder case, reported Express News on Monday.
The court ordered Musharraf to submit two surety bonds of Rs 1 million each even though the FIA prosecutor suggested that Musharraf should be made to pay Rs 1 billion for the bail.
Reportedly, a message has been circulated within the army that Musharraf will be allowed to leave the country soon. The ‘message’ was conveyed in a bid to pacify growing unease within the army over the trial of its former chief.
If my memory serves right, the judiciary and lawyers were fighting Musharaff only because they were supporting jihadis against US attacks. He would now fight back to ensure either the army runs everything or the elected governments, he promised. Whatever the consequences. That he won a big majority subsequently (in 1998), made an army chief (General Jehangir Karamat) resign prematurely, fired a navy chief, forced a peace accord on Kargil, was removed in Pervez Musharraf's coup and then incarcerated and exiled, is recent history. But remember his vehicle of comeback. He was riding a popular upsurge against Musharraf's assault on the judiciary. The people of Pakistan, even its elites, were now willing to fight back to preserve an institution of democracy. The same people who, in the past, had accepted every coup as deja vu.
Do we have surplus so that we are willing to provide them electricity?ISLAMABAD: The Nawaz Sharif government will seriously consider importing 1,000MW electricity from India as part of its short to medium term strategy to end loadshedding.
On an immediate basis, different options are under consideration at different levels, and the PML-N will present a roadmap for eliminating the circular debt. According to the option number one, the government will have to either hike its budget deficit by a few percentage points for diverting additional resources towards controlling the losses of power sector or as a second option divert major resources from the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) to energy crisis.
“The task force on energy has presented its recommendations in which the upcoming minister and his team have been advised to end the circular debt at all costs,” former finance minister Shaukat Tarin, who is also a member of this task force, told The News on Monday.
Showing his reluctance to share the details of any further recommendations, he said the budget deficit might go up, but the upcoming government would have to take steps for strengthening the energy sector that had literally choked all the economic activities.
However, sources in the economic ministries confirmed to this reporter that import of electricity from India as well as from Iran and Central Asian Republics (CARs) was feasible. It is also a pre-requisite for reviving the shattered growth prospects in the future.
When an Islamabad-based top official of the World Bank was asked if the bank had conducted any feasibility for exploring the import of electricity from India, he replied: “Yes” and added that 1,000MWs could be imported from India within the next two years.
The lingering energy crisis has severely damaged GDP growth in the last five years of PPP-led regime and average GDP growth stood at 2.5 percent of GDP on per annum basis.
The Planning Commission, which is preparing the salient features of next five-year plan, has estimated that the GDP growth could touch the 7 percent mark in next five years because huge untapped potential existed in this economy.
Citing examples, the official said, the country’s industry was running at 50 percent capacity and if power situation improved and industry achieved the level of its operation in the range of 70 percent, the country’s economic activities would be restored and GDP would be pushed up by 1 to 2 percent on per annum basis.
Governance reforms in the power sector will also play a key role in ending corruption and leakages and improving the energy supply. The auction of Third Generation (3G) technology will also boost economic activities by improving growth rate in the range of 2 to 3 percentage points over the medium term.
According to the WB officials, the electricity trade between Pakistan and India will be completed in next two years including conducting feasibility studies and pricing as well as placing transmission line to make it a reality.
India and Pakistan are working on energy cooperation, as there is no regional energy sharing mechanism in this region and it is the only way forward to end crisis.
Pakistan had formally requested the World Bank (WB) for multimillion dollar assistance for importing 500 MW electricity from India. Considering watershed developments between India and Pakistan, the WB official said Pakistan’s industrial load shedding resulted into loss of 400,000 jobs.
Sri Lanka is the only country in South Asia which is surplus in electricity and all other countries are energy deficit but there is no energy trade scheme.Pakistan and Afghanistan can import electricity from Central Asian states for lowering down power shortages.
Feasibility studies have confirmed technical and economic viability of exporting summer time electricity surpluses from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan from existing power plants to relieve power shortages in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“Trade in energy is negligible,” said the sources and cited an example that Afghanistan and Nepal could produce 100,000 MW hydropower which could be used to alleviate the crippling energy shortages in the region.

The Saudi government has minimised the number of visas for Umrah during coming Ramadan to 25,000 only whereas last year this number was 125,000, said a travel agent on Monday.
He said that travel agents have issued 52000 tickets to the pilgrims across the country for the coming Ramadan and these tickets are non-refundable. Tickets are issued by 12 airlines including PIA.
A PIA officer seeking anonymity said that the PML-N upcoming government should take up the issue with the Saudi government since it would be a matter of big loss not only for the PIA and other airlines but for poor pilgrims also. He said that the PIA would be bound to operate its Jumbo and B-777LR and B-777ER for Umrah operation whether or not there was passengers load on the flight. Ultimately the PIA would have to operate under load flights causing huge losses of revenue. A travel agent on condition of anonymity said that the PIA had already minimised its Umrah fares by Rs 48,000 and it was viable by May 30, 2013 but now due to the prevailing situation he hoped that this discounted fare would prolong by June 15. By the coming Ramadan the fare could go down further because the Saudi government has minimised the number of visas by 25,000 for all Pakistan and 0.5 millions visas for all over the world, while last year this number was 1.35 million. The Saudi authorities were of the view that they were on the extension of ‘Haramain’ and for that purpose they were trying to issue minimum visas so that pilgrims could be given better boarding lodging facilities. The Saudi government has also asked travel agents to ensure the return of their Umrah pilgrims first batch they sent otherwise no new visa would be issued to them for further batches. A travel agent said that there was a general trend among the people from some areas that they try to slip in Saudi Arabia after performing of Umrah. At present there were about 6,000 Pakistanis in the jails of Saudi Arabia who were held by the Saudi authorities after overstay. Now The Saudi government has asked the Pakistani government to transport back those overstaying pilgrims. The PIA has taken responsibility for 100 such passengers to transport them to Pakistan. Travel agents have appealed to the coming government of Mian Nawaz Sharif to take up the matter with the Saudi govt and resolve the issue.

"The dress code includes white or light coloured shirt (full-sleeved or half sleeved) with light coloured trouser or shalwar kameez with waist coat, and moccasins (shoes without laces) or sandals (shoes with straps) without socks.
"All public servants have been given seven days for preparations and have been directed to observe the dress code."
The unusual step is a sign of Pakistan's increasingly desperate attempts to save electricity, as shortages continue to plunge much of the country into darkness.
Electricity companies are only producing two thirds of Pakistan's required electricity – a result of outdated power generation plants being unable to cope, combined with the government being unable to pay electricity companies for the power they do produce.
Much of the plants were built in the 1960s and are creaking under the strain, while a drought is further hampering power generation.
Musadik Malik, the caretaker minister for water and power until the new government is inaugurated, has also logged a complaint against non-cooperation from ministries of petroleum and finance, who Pakistan Today said are reluctant in making payments.
Power outages lasting as long as 20 hours were recorded in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, while the capital Islamabad has also been hit.
In Peshawar, electricity "load shedding" – black outs – went up to 14 hours, and in the north western tribal areas bordering Afghanistan the situation was worse, with electricity available for only five to six hours per day.
In Punjab, power outage has almost destroyed industry. In Lahore, the country's second largest city, power was cut off for 12 to 14 hours daily, leaving the residents to swelter in 40C heat.
Mr Malik, the minister for water and power, and Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui, minister for petroleum and natural resources, together "expressed their inability to overcome the crisis", the Daily Times said they told a news conference in Lahore, where the temperature was 40C on Monday.
"They have termed financial constraints as a major, and incompetence as a minor, hurdle in resolving the issue," the newspaper said.
"Presenting the realistic picture, the ministers announced that they were going to increase the price of electricity and gas for all sectors."

The name of a Pakistan umpire who officiates in the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches has emerged in connection with the Mumbai police's investigations into spot-fixing.
The crime branch is probing the activities of the umpire in all the matches he was part of and keeping his movements under watch. The umpire had a brush with controversy a few months back, after a city-based model alleged that he had raped her. She later withdrew the complaint.![]()
"At this stage we cannot say if he was involved in spot-fixing. But what surprises us is that most of the arrested bookies and actor Vindu Singh were very close to him. They provided us with some details of the umpire's activities and we are trying to find out more details," a crime branch officer said.
Another officer also confirmed that the arrested bookies had told the police about their closeness to the umpire and about their meetings with him. "It seems they are part of the same cartel, so we decided to inquire into the umpire's details."
