Nothing wrong with Jindal not wanting to be called an Indian-American if that is what is required for his professional well-being -- he is pretty open about this, which is better than being "Indian American" like Vijay Prashad or Anjana Chatterji or their ilk. Pretty silly to hold this against Jindal. Knowing who your enemies are is a pre-requisite for being realistic.

Colorado couple charged with starving six-year-old daughter

"On admission, her weight was 25 pounds, which would be appropriate for a normal two-year-old," the statement said. "Medical experts reportedly believed that her low weight was consistent with an insufficient diet despite plentiful food in the family home."

According to an affidavit from an investigator, the couple told staff at the Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora, a Denver suburb, that their daughter was "out of control," and that they had to keep locks on the pantry and refrigerator doors because she would not stop eating.

The affidavit said Jason Barton later told police that the couple punished their daughter when she misbehaved by making her walk "laps" of their driveway in Evergreen, about 20 miles southwest of Denver.

A witness, whose name was redacted in the investigator's report, told police he had seen the girl crying as she ran up and down outside the home, and that he heard her father tell the child: "This is because you are stealing food."

Hospital staff likened the girl's appearance on admission to that of a concentration camp victim, the affidavit said.

Security video appears to show a Philadelphia transit officer shove a man holding a toddler against the wall and grab him by the throat as they argued over whether he paid the $2.25 fare.
The video shows the man swinging back at the officer and later being forcibly removed from the train still holding the small girl. He was then handcuffed on the platform and charged with resisting arrest.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority video shows police speaking intermittently with 20-year-old Ellis Smith for about 15 minutes Thursday evening. The train eventually came to a stop and some rush-hour service was halted over the stalemate.
The veteran officer involved in the confrontation later told a supervisor he feared he would be disciplined if he walked away, SEPTA's police chief said Friday.
"If a 16-year officer thinks they can't step away from a situation that's spiraling into something that might jeopardize the safety of a child, that's on me. I never want a child's safety to be jeopardized," Chief Thomas Nestel said.
Nestel has waged an aggressive campaign against fare evaders, issuing 5,100 citations last year, on the theory that those passengers often cause other problems. He often posts their pictures on social media, and said the strategy has led to a significant drop in transit crime.
However, he recognized that fare evasion is not murder, and said his officers are not trained to grab people by the throat.
"We don't want to be rolling around on a platform with every person we arrest for fare evasion," Nestel said.
An internal investigation is underway. The officer involved in the shoving match was off Friday.
"I don't know that I'll be taking him off the street," Nestel said.
There is no transit video of Smith jumping the turnstile or otherwise evading the fare because the north Philadelphia station where he entered is under construction, Nestel said. The information instead came from a cashier, he said.
However, a passenger's video that caught some of his interaction with police was posted online and drew hundreds of thousands of views. A home number for Smith could not be determined Friday and it was not clear if he had a lawyer or had posted bail.
Fare evaders are typically removed, asked for identification and given a $300 citation, transit officials said.
The young girl — dressed in a pink dress and braids — is about 1 or 2 years old and believed to be Smith's daughter, Nestel said. She was taken to her mother after Smith's arrest.
"We can't endanger the lives of little kids over a fare evasion," Nestel said. "That's unacceptable."

Pudlicker of the Souther Baptist Mission in Atlanta and a former regional head of the KKK pointedly noted "In the great tradition of USA as the land of the free and home of the brave, my KKK brethren decided to pay back the people who took down the confederate flags from our state parliament buildings by setting their churches on fire."

Rev. Brian D. koknocker of the all-white Baptist Congregation in the same neighborhood made a gesture of the cross and then said "Truly, Jesus is the embodiment of all that is love and hope and glory and brotherhood, and provides us with the inner fire to spread his message of peace and love by setting fire to churches where inflammable people congregate. Hail to King James for showing white christians the way forward. China denounces US human rights record

China has released a report on a "terrible human rights record" in the United States, denouncing the country for its overseas drone attacks, state-sponsored spying, police brutality and gun crimes.

The report, which was issued by China's State Council on Friday, said that the US is being "haunted by spreading guns, frequent occurrence of violent crimes, [and] the excessive use of force by police."

The report added that Washington has been “violating human rights in other countries" with drone strikes and mass surveillance programs” in recent years.

US intelligence has been using "indiscriminate" torture against terrorist suspects following the September 11th attacks in 2001, it noted.

Highlighting police killings of several unarmed black men, which has sparked protests over the past year across various American cities, the report emphasizes that the US justice system suffers from "serious racial bias" and discrimination against people of color.

The report also pointed out that American administration and institutions continue to be plagued by the "grim problems of racial discrimination, and institutional discrimination against ethnic minorities."

The report comes a day after the United States issued a similar report criticizing China’s rights record.

According to leaked top secret US government spying programs by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and NSA have been eavesdropping on millions of American and European phone records and Internet data from major Internet companies.

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has also been launching drone strikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen, saying the airstrikes target Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked militants in those countries. Yet, official figures show that most of the victims were civilians.

In recent years, several videos have emerged showing American police assaulting teenagers and women in various parts of the country.

Gun violence across the US has also been under the spotlight, especially after a shooter killed 20 first-grade school children and six staff members using an assault rifle in a rampage at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012.

More than 5,000 people have reportedly been killed and over 10,000 injured by gun violence across the US since 1 January 2015.

Family: Girl, 4, shot by officer firing at dog is recovering

A 4-year-old girl who was shot in the leg when a police officer fired at a dog is recovering after surgery as her family questions how the officer responded.

Ava Ellis was hit accidentally on the afternoon of June 19 when an officer fired at a charging dog at a home in Whitehall, in central Ohio, according to Columbus police. The department said another relative had flagged down the officer for help after the girl's mother cut herself on glass.

Ava's parents, Andrea and Brad Ellis, and their attorney disputed the police account Tuesday and alleged the policeman fired unnecessarily and acted recklessly with children nearby on the porch. They say the roughly 40-pound dog, a bulldog mix named Patches, was retreating inside from the porch when the officer fired.

"The dog may have barked at the officer; however, the officer should not have shot," attorney Michael Wright said. "There was absolutely no reason for him to shoot. He was within 10 (or) 12 feet of the children."

The family also says people yelled to notify the officer that the girl was hurt but claims he drove away without offering help, and other emergency responders had to care for the girl.

Californians struggle for 'normal life,' without water

A washing machine stands in the middle of Maria Jimenez's California yard, like a redundant relic of modern life. Nearby are several rented mobile toilets, no longer in use.

For four months, she and her family have had no running water.

"We are trying to live a normal life," the 52-year-old told AFP in the town of Monson, 200 miles north of Los Angeles.

Hers is one of a growing number of generally low-income households with no direct access to water in central California's Valley, known as America's food basket, where four years of extreme drought have left many residents high and dry.

Jimenez and her husband use plastic plates and cups in order to save using water for washing the dishes, all the while generating piles of garbage and extra expenses.

Even before the well that supplied their house dried up, they couldn't drink its water, which was polluted with pesticides from nearby fields.

Now they have no water at all, and things aren't likely to change anytime soon.

"We don't have water in a country that is rich," Jimenez's neighbor Laura Garcia said.

Born in Mexico, she recalled how as a girl living in a small village near Guadalajara, she would haul water more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) to her house.

Today, even her childhood hamlet in Mexico has running water.

She doesn't dare tell her family back in Mexico about her situation in the United States.

"They would tell me 'Come home! What are you doing there?'" she said in Spanish.

they have been raping acquifiers and pumping in fertilizers into central valley for decades now...anyone who goes there like i did can see the soil is not that fertile, there aint no himalayan rivers bringing in fresh silt and the productivity is just a function of inputs into a land that is already zombiefied. in ancient times must have been rivers draining from sierra nevada to the west but all dead now except the colorado river.

simple fact as told my others is that CA cannot support its current 40 million population and ever growing number of new entrants. its upper half is untracked wilderness like the mendocino and klamath national forests, and its lower half is semi-arid and gets little rainfall....no lush east coast or great lakes type vegetation.

but it isnt as bad as places like phoenix where acres of housing with backyard pools abut on to pure desert land!

in generally a geologically stable cold/temperate place like north america cannot grow the kind of crops or have such diversity as a hotter wetter place like india or central america can. its all propped up on subsidy, inputs, cheap energy, steroidal seeds.

(CNN)Police arrested a soldier carrying an AR-15 rifle and ammunition at a Fayetteville, North Carolina, mall after officers received multiple reports of an armed man walking through a Macy's department store. Bryan Wolfinger was tracked down within minutes near the Macy's wing of the Cross Creek Mall on Thursday evening, police said. He was detained without incident, according to police, and charged with "going armed to the terror of the public."

Wolfinger, who is assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, was carrying the rifle, a Kevlar vest and multiple ammunition magazines, and he intended to have photographs taken with the gun and the other equipment, CNN affiliate WNCN reported, citing Fayetteville police.

Police have released Wolfinger, and he is "with his chain of command," said Master Sgt. Patrick Malone, a spokesman for 82nd Airborne Division.

Fort Bragg is fully cooperating with the police investigation, he said. While initial reports indicated that a second armed man was in the mall, Wolfinger was found to be acting alone. Officers searched the entire mall to be sure there was no second armed man present, the police statement said.

Don't worry — they were only black-powder rounds, not real ammunition, but it suffices to say that a man dressed as a pirate and firing a gun toward a road still had a lot of drivers shivering their timbers (in fact, one took a cell-phone video that was handed over to police).
