The men were not hardened militants. One was a pharmacist, another a heating and cooling technician. One was a high school student. They were six cousins, all living in Saudi Arabia, all with the same secret. They had vowed allegiance to the Islamic State — and they planned to kill another cousin, a sergeant in the kingdom’s counterterrorism force.
And that is what they did. In February, the group abducted Sgt. Bader al-Rashidi, dragged him to the side of a road south of this central Saudi city, and shot and killed him. With video rolling, they condemned the royal family, saying it had forsaken Islam.
In July, a 19-year-old man murdered his uncle, a police colonel, before carrying out a suicide attack near a prison, wounding two guards.
Critics argue that many Saudi clerics have never renounced the aspects of the Wahhabi tradition that the Islamic State has adopted, especially with regard to Shiites, who make up an estimated 10 percent of the kingdom’s 20 million citizens. Many Saudi clerics consider Shiites heretics and accuse them of loyalty to Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, Iran.
The jihadists have exploited this by repeatedly launching suicide attacks on Shiite mosques and then accusing Saudi clerics of hypocrisy for condemning the violence. “It is clearly hard for Saudi clerics to condemn outright attacks on Shiites,” said Mr. Bunzel, the Princeton scholar.
And the gem at the end.Still, the group had struggled to target the security forces, so it told recruits to kill officers from their own families. General Turki summarized their message as, “You are closer, so no one will know you.”
In September, two men abducted their cousin, a soldier in the Saudi Army, and filmed a video of him bound and begging for mercy in the sand as they pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and shot him dead. The security forces killed one of them and arrested the other.
Lesson of the day, if you believe in Malsi, you cannot trust your brother.Sergeant Rashidi’s brothers are glad the six are dead, but the episode has left them deeply suspicious.
“If anyone calls and says, ‘Where are you? I want to see you,’ you don’t trust him anymore,” Bandar said.
A New York woman who was believed to be the victim of a racially-motivated slashing attack admitted to police that she made up the claim, and the wound was actually self-inflicted.
Initial reports indicated that the 20-year-old Muslim woman was slashed in the face by a man who called her a “terrorist” outside Trinity Church in New York City’s Financial District on Thursday afternoon. The woman, who attends a nearby private cosmetology school, was left with a two-inch gash on her left cheek.
NYPD investigators were unable to find witnesses to corroborate the alleged attack. The incident reportedly occurred during rush hour, which normally sees peak pedestrian traffic.
The investigation revealed that the woman had slashed her own left cheek and she recanted her story Thursday evening, the NYPD told The Independent.

Armed members of Al-Qaeda ambushed a group of young soldiers travelling in three civilian vehicles in the province of Abyan, killing at least 20 of them, said the source, who requested anonymity.
The assailants ordered the soldiers to get out of the vehicles and gunned them down early in the morning in the town of Ahwar, the source told AFP.
The soldiers were young recruits who were being deployed as part of the internationally recognised government's efforts to restore security to areas under its control.
They had been travelling to a military camp in Hadramawt, the neighbouring province whose capital has been held by Al-Qaeda since April last year.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), also known as Ansar al-Sharia, in an online statement denied it was involved in the attack.
Ramadan’s public criticisms of the Muslim Brotherhood between 2011 and 2013 related to what he viewed as tactical errors and imprudent strategies, rather than a denunciation of any malicious actions. He disapproved of the Brotherhood taking a dominant role in the political arena by fielding a candidate in the presidential election in 2012, describing it as a “trap,” and criticised their neoliberal economic policies. Yet, Ramadan did not publicly condemn Morsi’s extrajudicial decree in 2012, the Brotherhood’s sectarianism, or the permissive attitude toward public incitement to violence in and out of power. These shortcomings are critical not only to understanding how Egypt developed between 2011 and 2013—but were also deeply unethical actions. But while his record suggests Ramadan would not have supported the moves, he did not publicly censure the Brotherhood for them.

Modi is a coward on Islam, or must appear to be, by necessity. No public figure in this country could ever get away with talking like Donald Trump, not when muslims already account for 30% of our population. Hmm, Modi repeats in Brussels - site of the latest ISIS outrage, his spiel that "no faith teaches terrorism" and "terrorism needs to be de-linked from any religion". Perhaps he or the RSS can take the trouble of fleshing out and formalizing their ideology on this issue, assuming they do have an intellectually thought out position on the topic.
Despite all the talk of Modi-Trump similarities, it looks like Modi would not be in agreement with Trump's proposed policy on Muslim immigration.

A petrol bomb was thrown on Tuesday at the office of a senior politician in Malaysia's opposition-ruled Penang state, after he described preacher Zakir Naik as “Satan”.
State officials said no one was injured and no damage caused in the early-morning attack after the fire-bomb landed on the centre's metal shutters.
State Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy said the attack may have been prompted by his Facebook post over the weekend about preacher Zakir Naik.
“It could possibly be related to my comment on Zakir as Satan,” he told AFP.
Ramasamy accused Zakir, an Indian national, of giving speeches designed to promote hatred of other faiths.
His posting was not directed against Islam or Muslims but against “this particular person”, he said in a statement.
“I regret the use of the word 'Satan' which has caused uneasiness and unhappiness among Muslims in Malaysia,” Ramasamy said, adding that the word was later deleted.
Zakir, 51, is an Islamic preacher on comparative religion.
Ramasamy, who is also the Penang Hindu Endowment Board chairman, had spoken out against a planned programme by Zakir's son, also an Islamic preacher, in Penang state on April 15.
On Sunday police banned Zakir from giving a lecture at a university in the southern state of Malacca following complaints from minority groups.
He had planned to speak on “Similarities between Hinduism and Islam”.
National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a tweet on Monday that Zakir was barred to ensure public order.
The aim was to protect “public order and religious sensitivities in Malaysia”, he wrote.
Issues related to race, religion and language are considered sensitive in Malaysia, which witnessed deadly riots mainly between ethnic Malays and Chinese in 1969.

The list shows the extent of the Islamic State’s adherence to the doctrine of takfir, which enables them to brand any Muslim who does not submit to their authority and hold by their interpretation of Islam a heretic worthy of death.

FINAL COMMUNIQUE OF THE 13TH ISLAMIC SUMMIT OF THE HEADS OF STATE/GOVERNMENT OF THE OIC MEMBER STATES
Date: 15/04/2016
21. The Conference reaffirmed its principled support forthe people of Jammu and Kashmir for the realization of their legitimate right to self-determination, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It further reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir is the core dispute between Pakistan and India and its resolution is indispensable for bringing peace in South Asia.
22. The Conference called on India to implement numerous UN resolutions on Kashmir which declare that the final disposition of the State of Jammu and Kashmir would be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. It further reminded the international community of its obligation to ensure implementation of UN resolutions on Kashmir and fulfill the promise made with the people of Jammu and Kashmir 68 year ago.
23. The Conference affirmed its support to the wide-spread indigenous movement of the people of the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOK) for their right to self-determination. It urged that freedom struggle must not be equated with terrorism.
24. The Conference expressed concern at the indiscriminate use of force and gross violations of human rights committed in IOK by Indian security forces which have resulted in killing thousands of innocent and unarmed civilians as well as injuring hundreds of others including women, children and elderly, most recently the killing of a 22 year old woman, Ms. Shaista Hameed in Pulwama on 14 February 2016.
25. The Conference welcomed the establishment of a standing mechanism by the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) for monitoring the human rights situation in the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The Conference called upon India to allow the OIC Fact Finding Mission and the international human rights groups and humanitarian organizations to visit IOK. The Conference endorsed the recommendations of the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir. It took note of the Memorandum presented by the True Representatives of the Kashmiri People to the Contact Group at its recent meeting.
26. The Conference called on the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) to undertake activities to protect holy sites in Kashmir and preserve cultural rights and Islamic heritage. The Conference appealed to the Member States and Muslim institutions to grant scholarships to the Kashmiri students in deferent universities and institutions in OIC countries.
A second outcome of Modi’s Saudi visit, duly highlighted by our spin doctors, is that the two countries are entering an unprecedented level of cooperation and coordination in the security field in the fight against terrorism. The joint statement devoted four paragraphs to it.
However, a dark cloud has appeared on the horizon in no time, with a Saudi official claiming that they read the joint statement largely as aimed at Iran, which, they believe is fostering terrorism in the region. Of course, our security czars had assumed that Modi brilliantly secured Saudi Arabia’s support in controlling Pakistani state sponsorship of terrorism.
In fact, the Pakistani coverage of Modi’s Saudi visit confirms an impression that Salman may have used Modi’s shoulder to take a pot-shot at the Iranians. Perhaps, that explains why Salman felt so obliged to Modi as to confer the Abdulaziz Sash, our PM’s controversial reputation on the Arab Street as the “butcher of Gujarat” notwithstanding.
Unsurprisingly, adrenaline began flowing in the Saudi veins and they have since imposed new measures against Iran by closing the Saudi air space to Iranian civilian flights and prohibiting tankers carrying Iranian crude from transiting Saudi waters (external links here and here).
Salman probably concluded that with Modi on his side, Iran’s regional “isolation” is now complete. Indeed, the Saudis have offered to Modi that they can replace Iran as India’s key energy partner in the region. They are paranoid about the prospect of an imminent reset of India-Iran ties.

See here:30. The Conference stressed the need for the cooperative relations between Islamic States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to be based on the principle of good-neighborliness, non-interference in their domestic affairs, respect for their independence and territorial sovereignty, resolving differences by peaceful means in accordance with the OIC and the UN charters and the principles of international law, and refraining from the use or threat of force.
31. The Conference condemned the aggressions against the missions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Tehran and Mashhad in Iran, which constitute a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, and international law which guarantees the inviolability of diplomatic missions.
32. The Conference rejected Iran’s inflammatory statements on the execution of judicial decisions against the perpetrators of terrorist crimes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, considering those statements a blatant interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a contravention of the United Nations Charter, the OIC Charter and of all international covenants.
33. The Conference deplored Iran’s interference in the internal affairs of the States of the region and other Member States including Bahrain, Yemen, Syria, and Somalia, and its continued support for terrorism.

Bhadrakumar, I was told by a Malyali friend, is from a Dalit sub-caste. One has to admit that he is a clever man, even though a commie. I was also told that even in the soft-leftist coterie of the IFS, he was considered too radical and someone who is besotted with China. Narayanan was nothing great, either as diplomat or as a president. He knew how to game the system and adroitly side step political landmines using his "caste" card. One of the worlds’s most cited philosophers , Noam Chomsky once said, “Everybody is worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there is a really easy way: Stop participating in it.” This is a simple phrase but with loaded meaning telling us about the lies, prejudices and falsehood in the nation’s approach towards dealing with the scourge of terrorism, the biggest menace of our times.
This can be better illustrated as a case in point when Masood Azhar, the Jaish e Mohammad (JeM) Chief, got a big diplomatic support from China. The neighbouring country blocked India’s bid at the United Nations (UN) on banning the chief of JeM.
India’s contention was based on the submission made for consideration by Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) for the technical examination of the evidences of Masood Azhar’s direct role in orchestrating terror attacks at Pathankot.
China, however, at the behest of Pakistan, advised the 1267 Sanctions Committee to put on hold the decision of including the name of JeM’s chief maintaining that he does not qualify to be a terrorist.
The number of death because of terrorist attacks worldwide rose from 3329 in the year 2002 to 32685 the year 2014. Out of total lives lost in 2014, about 78% counted for in the five countries alone i.e. Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria.
Not surprising ; the ultimate aim of converting all countries from Darul- Harb to Darul Islam !The UN has no internationally-agreed definition of terrorism. Although work began on a draft comprehensive convention on international terrorism by the end of 2000, the definitional impasse has prevented its adoption. The prime reason is the standoff with the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
The divided international community begets a huge advantage for the terrorist outfits as practically every such terrorist organizations has one or more countries extending covert or overt support to them.
The world is terrified seeing the horror perpetrated by the Islamic State but the world is also aware that it is getting active support and funding from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and many other fundamentalist Sunni Muslim States of that region. Russia supports Ukrainian rebels and America supports Syrians rebels.
Many western arms manufacturing countries find a huge market in supplying armaments, missiles and explosives to terrorist organizations. It is said that Islamic State alone has a two billion dollar war chest. Understandably this money will travel to the developed countries which manufacture military hardware and logistics.
Recently Turkey ordered thousands of Toyota vehicles to Japan. These vehicles are required by Islamic States and not by Turkey which is just a conduit in this business deal. Toyota Company fully aware that these vehicles are meant for Islamic States has no qualms about selling their vehicles to the Islamic State. Many shipping companies are earning huge profit in marketing the Syrian purloined crude oil through their tankers worldwide.
The international oil market could keep the prices of crude consistently low because of the availability of illegal supply of crude oil at a cheaper price by the Islamic State.
Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) published a report from a major western media outlet illustrating that ISIS is supplied not by “black market oil” or “hostage ransoms” but billions of dollars worth of supplies carried into Syria across NATO member Turkey’s borders via hundreds of trucks a day.
The political economy of terrorism benefits many countries. Islamic States’ supply lines run precisely where Syrian and Iraqi air power cannot go. It goes to the north and into NATO-member Turkey, and to the southwest into US allies Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Beyond these borders exists a logistical network that spans a region including both Eastern Europe and North Africa.
The average Amreeki six pack Joe, blissfully unaware of all this !Terrorists and weapons left over from NATO’s intervention in Libya in 2011 were promptly sent to Turkey and then onto Syria – coordinated by US State Department officials and intelligence agencies in Benghazi – a terrorist hotbed for decades.
Similar tactics implemented in the Afghan civil war with devastating results for the whole world !The New York Times reported in 2013 in their article, “Arms Airlift to Syria Rebels Expands, With Aid From C.I.A.,” says that from offices at secret locations, American intelligence officers have helped the Arab governments shop for weapons, including a large procurement from Croatia, and have vetted rebel commanders and groups to determine who should receive the weapons as they arrive, according to American officials speaking on the condition of anonymity”.
China is indeed playing a double game ; ruthlessly suppressing Muslim dissent in its North Western China and then "encouraging" Pakistani mischief for the purpose of playing geo-politics!The recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels forebodes the extension of the span of terrorism from a regional to a global scale. No country is now immune from terrorist attacks. This should be sufficient for the big powers to internalize the horrors of terrorism, come out of their paranoiac diplomacy and to join ‘the war of terrorism’ and this includes China.
