KARACHI – The equity market suffered heavy losses Thursday on investors’ concerns over outcome of new restrictions on US aid to Pakistan. At the Karachi Stock Exchange, the benchmark KSE 100-share index shed 193.40 points or 1.32 percent to conclude the day’s trading at 14,420.19 points as compared to 14613.59 points of the previous day. Samar Iqbal, equity dealer at KSE, said urea price reduction by local fertilizer companies coupled with institutional selling triggered across the board selling at market. Volume remained in the high level with Rs.11.5b shares been traded. Fertilizer stocks especially Engro, FFC, FFBL and Fatima fell after news of urea price decline. KSE Allshare-index shed 134.57 points or 1.31 percent to stop the trading at 10116.60 points, KSE 30-share index lost 187.49 points or 1.47 percent to stop the day at 12558.94 points while KMI 30-share index shed 356.26 points or 1.42 percent to end the day at 24767.74 mark.

According to latest figures released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Thursday, the country trade deficit has recorded at $17.649 billion in July-April 2011-12 period as against $ 12.171 billion on July-April 2010-11 showing a huge increase of over 45 per cent in just one year. The trade deficit had crossed the annual target of $13.5 to $14 billion with still two months to go in the outgoing fiscal year. The PBS figures showed that country’s exports had recorded negative growth of over three per cent during the first ten months of the outgoing financial year, as it had recorded at $19.393 billion in the period under review against the $20.092 billion of same period last year. On the other hand, country’s imports had increased by 14.81 per cent in one year, as it has recorded at $37.042 billion in July-April 2011-12 against $32.263 billion of July-April 2010-11. Therefore, the trade deficit remained at higher side of $17.649 billion in July-April period of 2011-12 against $12.171 billion of same period last year.The Commerce Ministry officials held international economic situation responsible for the widening trade deficit of the country, as according to them prices of importable commodities like oil is on the increasing trend in international market contrary to the declining prices of our exportable goods. The prices of textile made commodities had decreased in international market that made impossible for Pakistan to achieve last year exports level of $25 billion during the outgoing financial year.

Battle for Karachi
Since the start of the year, as recorded in this column, Pakistan’s commercial engine, Karachi, has witnessed target-killings. Covert wings of the city’s three main political rivals, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Awami National Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement, and Sindhi and Baloch nationalists are allegedly responsible for the violence.
Karachi’s Naib Nazim (an administrative post) Malik Muhammad Khan was shot dead in Lyari (a district in Karachi) while protesting Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s conviction for contempt of court earlier this month. The federal government’s help was invoked and the Pakistan Army Rangers took charge of the city and launched what is now being called the “Lyari Operation”. Last week, federal interior minister Rehman Malik termed Lyari’s situation similar to that of Swat a couple of years back. Dawn reported last week that President Asif Zardari had directed the Rangers, local police and other security forces to join in a large-scale attempt to stamp out the violence “across the board”.
Normal life was disrupted following the violence, which claimed 40 lives. Lyari’s public transport, schools, colleges and hospitals, all suffered. The News on May 9 carried the new date sheet for Class IX exams in the troubled area. The Express Tribune reported on May 10 that Tariq Kamal, assistant chief reporter of a Sindhi newspaper, was kidnapped and later killed.
MISSING IN ACTION
THE ghost of Pakistan’s “missing persons” has raised its head again. Some time back, the Supreme Court had questioned security agencies about their whereabouts. Last week, Daily Times had reported that Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, while hearing the cases of missing person, gave the Balochistan chief secretary and top cops a deadline of two weeks to produce the missing persons before the court. As time went by, these “missing persons”, as though by magic, traced the way to their homes. Daily Times reported on May 10 that seven of them were brought back home. Balochistan has the highest number of missing persons, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. The issue was also raised in the Senate on May 10, reported The Express Tribune website.
FALSE ALARM
THE EXPRESS TRIBUNE on May 10 carried a story that qualifies as a rejoinder to news carried in the Indian media. The story stated: “The Mumbai Police on Wednesday released photographs of three alleged terrorists, out of five, that it claimed belonged to banned outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and had entered Mumbai. The three, however, are present in Lahore, with two of them running businesses and one serving as a security guard at the city’s famed electronics market Hafeez Centre.” The men were identified as Atif Butt and Mehtab Butt, and Baber. It turns out that Atif came across his photograph and a report on an Indian magazine’s website while browsing the Net.

What's he talking about? In the US, the Centre for the Study of Pakistan is all over the place. The students are generally about 1 to 2 years old. Not only that, there's even adult centres of study of Pakistan spread all over the US. Sri Lanka has dropped plans to host a limited overs series between Pakistan and Australia in August as it clashes with the island's Premier League, Pakistani cricket officials said Saturday.
"It's disappointing," Pakistan Cricket Board's chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmed, told AFP.
"Initially the SLC (Sri Lankan Cricket) offered to host the series and we stopped negotiating with others."
Since Sri Lanka told Pakistan of its decision Friday, Pakistan had started negotiations with other countries about hosting the series, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia, he said.
"We are looking for other venues to host Australia... and hope to finalise it soon," said Ahmed.

The images that indicated that both Veena and the director were in high spirits and were too cosy to be called just an item, have not gone down too well in Pakistan. And, reportedly some right-wing Islamists have demanded action against Veena for sipping alcohol in public (the pictures show Veena drinking alcohol).
That's not all, some Indian Muslim groups have also expressed their displeasure at Veena's pictures and have sternly advocated that she should be sent back to her country.
