*Cannot bring myself to call Turdpal by his real name ....An email that was sent by the victim who is a reporter with Tehelka to the managing editor however says that what Tejpal did was not a bad lapse of judgment but a case of serious sexual assault. She says that Tejpal tried to disrobe her and groped her twice during the recently concluded Think festival in Goa.

New Delhi, Nov 20: In a shocking incident on Wednesday, Tarun Tejpal, the Editor of the news giant Tehelka, has "removed himself" from the position for a period of 6 months. Tarun has recused himself for six months as the Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka, after what is being described, in an official statement, as 'an incident with a journalist'.
In an e-mail sent to the weekly magazine's Managing Editor, Shoma Chaudhury, Mr Tejpal wrote: "A bad lapse of judgment, an awful misreading of the situation, have led to an unfortunate incident that rails against all we believe in and fight for. I have already unconditionally apologised for my misconduct to the concerned journalist, but I feel impelled to atone further." He added, "I feel atonement cannot be just words. I must do the penance that lacerates me. I am therefore offering to recuse myself from the editorship of Tehelka, and from the Tehelka office, for the next six months."
Forwarding Tejpal's mail to Tehelka's employees this evening, Ms Chaudhury wrote: "There has been an untoward incident, and though he has extended an unconditional apology to the colleague involved, Tarun will be recusing himself as the editor of Tehelka for the next six months." When NDTV asked about the matter to Shoma, she said, "This is an internal matter. The journalist concerned is satisfied with the action taken. Tarun Tejpal's recusing himself is in keeping with the principles of right response and standards that we want to live by."

That is the point Rajithn'ji. Remind them all the time and point out the action they took (or did not take) every time they try to speak up. Basically, hollow them out.rajithn wrote: Rana Ayyub or Karuna Nundy won't do jack sh**! If there is a will - there is a way. GOI or any citizen can step in and file a suo-moto cause. The victim does not have to complain to police! The victim has already complained and now has been dissuaded from going to police - that is cause-evidence itself.rajithn wrote:I don't think they can until the victim files a complaint.rohitv wrote:The victim is a friend of Tejpal's daughter. If there is a cctv recording, and if the complaint is in public space, they can take action, esp if the state women commission or something asks them.rajithn wrote:I don't think they can until the victim files a complaint.rohitv wrote:The victim is a friend of Tejpal's daughter. Isnt there state commission for women or similar body in Goa? I am sure this technicality can be overcome.rajithn wrote:I don't think they can until the victim files a complaint.rohitv wrote:The victim is a friend of Tejpal's daughter. Why cant Goa Police register a case and arrest this rapist?

I am not sure about the grounds for a suo-moto case. There is CCTV recording of the elevator encounter. The problem with a third party filing a case would be if the girl then writes subsequently that the matter has been settled.Sanku wrote: If there is a cctv recording, and if the complaint is in public space, they can take action, esp if the state women commission or something asks them.
Exactly my thought. Why waitsyele wrote:Goa is ruled by BJP. Why not Govt of Goa initiate criminal proceedings under Nirbhaya law against Arun Tejpal?
Manish Tiwary talking about fascism is ironic as Sonia's father is a known fascist & admirer of Hitler
You call Modi Hitler, I will vote for Modi. You call BJP Idiot, I will vote for Modi. You call BJP communal, I will vote for Modi. You call Modi feku, I will vote for Modi. You call Modi beast, I will vote for Modi. For me Modi is my Hero who will liberate India from evil clutches of corrupts, anti-nationals and characterless people like you.
Indira Gandhi reminded us of Hitler in 1977. Modi reminds us of Sardar Patel i.e. a statesmanesque, visionary thinking, decisiveness, etc. !
Yes Modi is a Hitler who will push Congress into Concentration camp..!!!

As seems to have become routine nowadays, news first broke on Twitter via a link to an internal office email sent by Tehelka magazine's Managing Editor, Shoma Chaudhury, which appended an email "in apology" from the weekly's editor Tarun Tejpal to her.
The emails speak for themselves and are reproduced below:

Dear All,
This may come as a rude surprise to many of you. There is a letter from Tarun appended to this mail. There has been an untoward incident, and though he has extended an unconditional apology to the colleague involved, Tarun will be recusing himself as the editor of Tehelka for the next six months.
Tehelka is an institution he has built, and which many journalists both current and former, have contributed to in the most profound ways. Throughout our 13-year career, we have proudly articulated and tried to live by the highest standards. We have also believed that when there is a mistake or lapse of any kind, one can only respond with right thought and action. In keeping with this stated principle, and the collective values we live by, Tarun will be stepping down for the period mentioned.
This is a hard time for all of us, and I hope all of you will stand by the institution.
Best,
shoma

My dear Shoma,
The last few days have been most testing, and I squarely take the blame for this. A bad lapse of judgment, an awful misreading of the situation, have led to an unfortunate incident that rails against all we believe in and fight for.
I have already unconditionally apologised for my misconduct to the concerned journalist, but I feel impelled to atone further. Tehelka has been born and built, day on day, with my blood, toil, tears and sweat, and that of many others, against near-insurmountable odds. It has lived for and fought the big battles of our time, always on the side of the oppressed and the wronged, always on the side of equity and justice. Its voice has travelled the world and changed policy and perceptions. It has been a beacon for those who would do the right thing.
Through bad, and worse, times I have protected Tehelka and its journalists from the inevitable demands of power and corporations. I have always allowed every journalist's sense of the right to flower and express itself. No one has ever been asked to do what they don't believe in.
I have always held that Tehelka the institution, and its work, have always been infinitely more important than any of us individuals. It is tragic, therefore, that in a lapse of judgment I have hurt our own high principles. Because it involves Tehelka, and a sterling shared legacy, I feel atonement cannot be just words. I must do the penance that lacerates me. I am therefore offering to recuse myself from the editorship of Tehelka, and from the Tehelka office, for the next six months.
You have always been stellar, Shoma, and even as I apologise to you and all my other colleagues, for this unfortunate incident, I leave Tehelka in your more than capable and safe hands.
In apology,
Tarun

Soon thereafter, the Business Standard carried a news item, quoting Shoma Chaudhury as telling them: “It is an internal problem and we are not setting up any enquiry into the matter.”
Ms Chaudhuri was also quoted by NDTV as saying:
"This is an internal matter. The journalist concerned is satisfied with the action taken. Tarun Tejpal's recusing himself is in keeping with the principles of right response and standards that we want to live by."
Officially, there was no news about the nature of the "unfortunate"/"untoward" incident or "misconduct" till NDTV quoted "a person close to the [concerned] journalist" who described it as "grave sexual misconduct."
"It happened not once, but twice and the girl is completely shattered and emotionally scarred. She continues to put forward her plea that Tehelka should set up a committee to look into sexual harassment cases according to Visakha guidelines"
NDTV also tweeted more details about the incident:
It has now emerged that the concerned journalist, also wrote to Tehelka managing editor Chaudhuri, now officiating as editor, providing details about what had happened at Goa during the magazine's recently concluded Think festival:
"As you read through details...I hope you will also understand how traumatic and terrifying it has been for me to report this to you."
We are taking a conscious call not to reproduce the full text of the journalist's email to protect her identity, which goes on to say that:
[Tarun Tejpal] sexually assaulted me at Think on two occasions last week
Both times, I returned to my room in a completely distraught condition, trembling and crying
As of Saturday evening, he sent me text messages insinuating that I misconstrued "a drunken banter". That is not what happened.
In her email she demanded that Tehelka should:
constitute an anti sexual harassment cell as per the Vishaka guidelines immediately, to investigate this matter
ramana wrote:Assaulting a person (groping etc) is battery covered under IPC and a crime whether the victim reports or not. The crime happened in Goa.
Goa police should investigate and interview the perpetrator and take apporpriate action.

^ Before that shouldnt Goa BJP unit "leak" those tapes to public through usual sources ..?rajithn wrote:ramana wrote:Assaulting a person (groping etc) is battery covered under IPC and a crime whether the victim reports or not. The crime happened in Goa.

You mean the police can take cognisance of the act having taken place..even without a plaintiff or witnesses? Perhaps if the hotel submits the CCTV footage to the police and complains of an assault having taken place on its property. I am not sure. Don't know the legal elements that can be brought to bear.
You can bet your bottom Rupee/dollar/pound that the girl is being, as we speak, pummelled with offers of money coupled with threats etc to keep quiet or vanish.
It is only a matter of time before Congress attempts to do a massive rally to show it can pull crowds. Though they might be smug about their election winning capabilities or alliances' strength to divide and conquer; at some point in time people will look at the crowd sizes. If I were to predict, it would have to be a rally for Sonia - it is probably easier to pull crowd for her than Rahul. And Congress would have to pull 4-5 lakhs to show they have the capabilities too. They cannot pull 75,000 and claim credit.subhamoy.das wrote:Too many rallies is natural to thin the crowd. But look what is happening to his counter part's rallies.
