I am not offering this as an explanation, but more in the nature of speculation after doing humongous amounts of reading during the months I was occupied in the OIT thread. I read so much about the history of Zoroastrianism and I started suspecting that Zoroastrianism may well have influenced early Islam. One of the things Islam did was to oppose or change the rules and traditions set by pre-existing monotheistic religions even as it borrowed some things. Prayer five times a day was a Zoroastrian tradition, but Zoroastrians honored and loved dogs. Perhaps dogs were loved in the lands that Islam eventually grabbed. All those lands were Zoroastrian ruled after all for a thousand glorious years before Islam. Dogs may well have been declared as dirty and evil simply to force change which seems to be par for the course in Islam.

I have read elsewhere that Islam simply made cosmetic changes like direction of burial, day of sabbath etc to existing faiths. Declaring dogs as bad may have been one more nail.
I think we had a discussion on some thread about this. I suggested and traced the root of the hatred to hatred of the cult/worship of Hekate - who was popular among the Eastern Med, Greeks and Palestine area. She was portrayed as accompanied by or herself as a female dog, often black. The founder specifically directed his henchmen/jihadis to destroy temples of Hekate, and her female priestesses were executed. Hekate - shakti is somethingw eha d speculated on.

I see a two step evolution from ancient India. First is the Zoroastrian break. The next break are the middle eastern religions that tore down Zoroastrianism. Zoroastrianism advocated monotheism and instituted prayer five times a day, and worshipped the dog. Need to look at how much Judaism was influenced by Zoroaster, if at all.

Hecate is the transcription from the Latin, whereas Hekate is the transcription from the Greek. Both refer to the same goddess.
Notable proposed etymologies for the name Hecate are:
From the Greek word for 'will'.[7]
From Greek Ἑκάτη [Hekátē], feminine equivalent of Ἑκατός Hekatos, obscure epithet of Apollo.[8] This has been translated as "her that operates from afar", "her that removes or drives off",[9] "the far reaching one" or "the far-darter".[10]
From the Egyptian goddess of childbirth, Heqet.[11] has been suggested, but evidence for this is lacking.[/i

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hecate

Indians do need to recognise that liberality with etymologies is the bane of serious discussion. It is a type of cognitive bias.

Regarding Hekate

There are two threads active on the issue
a) "Out-of-India - From Theory to Truth" Thread in Strategic Forum - tries to map the migration of people, culture and knowledge from India to the rest of the world. Hekate was also taken up there, as has been mentioned here.

b) "Reverse Inculturation" Thread in General Forum (accessible only to members) - tries to map how other religions or their aspects have mutated and evolved out of the Vedic Civilization, directly or indirectly. More specifically, the Abrahamic religions are the focus.

There is naturally some overlap between the two, but the second thread goes deeper into Abrahamic faiths.

Of course, the context of the current discussion is different - Islam's hate of dogs.

Sarpa is also closely related to Serapa or Seraphim angels. Zoroastrianism had lot of impacts on Jewish philoposhy and in turn Christianity. By Jesus Christ's time, there were four groups of philosophers. Pharisees (persian, with Zoroastrianism view), Saduccess (Sadhus, or having highest class in society doing sacrifices), Scientists (with a Greek view)

Later Jewish and christian religion emergeed from these

Following the politics surrounding the establishment of Islamic infrastructure in the US:
While the Ground Zero mosque issue was more about symbolism than an actual pattern, the mosque out in rural Tennessee was more relevant. Today it had its official opening:

Love Mosque
Mosque for gays to open in France.....Closing in foreseeable future?(HD).Daily Hürriyet reporter Arzu Çakır Morin has conducted an interview with an unusual Muslim man in France, who has been trying to open a "mosque for gays."
"When I was 12 years old, I started exploring Islam and performing prayers. At first, I was impressed by the Salafists in Algeria, afterwards I became distant from them because of the terrorist attacks they performed," Mohammed Ludovic Lütfi Zahed said, explaining his approaching to Islam.
"After my first night with a man, I realized that I was gay. I have found out that I had been pushing down my feelings with the help of Islam
," he said.
Çakır questioned the reason why Zahed felt he needed a "mosque for gays." After performing the Hajj, I realized that a mosque for gays was a must for gay Muslims who want to perform their prayers," Zahed said.
"We will use a hall in a Buddhist chapel, which will be opened on Nov. 30th" he said, adding that in the new mosque women and men would be able to perform their prayers together in the same space.
In response to a question as to whether same-sex marriage ceremonies would be performed
, Zahed said: "We will start with Friday prayers, but we will perform marriages afterwards."Hmmmm.........Perhaps they could hire 'Femen' as a 'Gospel choir'

Saudi Arabia implements electronic tracking system for women

Denied the right to travel without consent from their male guardians and banned from driving, women in Saudi Arabia are now monitored by an electronic system that tracks any cross-border movements.

Since last week, Saudi women’s male guardians began receiving text messages on their phones informing them when women under their custody leave the country, even if they are travelling together.

Manal al-Sherif, who became the symbol of a campaign launched last year urging Saudi women to defy a driving ban, began spreading the information on Twitter, after she was alerted by a couple.

The husband, who was travelling with his wife, received a text message from the immigration authorities informing him that his wife had left the international airport in Riyadh.

“The authorities are using technology to monitor women,” said columnist Badriya al-Bishr, who criticised the “state of slavery under which women are held” in the ultra-conservative kingdom.

Women are not allowed to leave the kingdom without permission from their male guardian, who must give his consent by signing what is known as the “yellow sheet” at the airport or border.

Muslims made to pay Jizya by Kuffars
It was not the first time the army had threatened her — eight years ago she committed a crime by getting married, which was punishable by death. The Rohingyas are not permitted to marry in Myanmar because the authorities fear the Muslim ethnic group’s population would increase otherwise. Ms. Begum had to pay a “marriage tax,” which cost the couple all their savings, to escape punishment.

300 Egyptian Muslim men try to enjoy uncovered meat of 3 women

A crowd of 300 young people on Sunday sexually assaulted three women near Tahrir Square, according to a report on the website of Egypt’s flagship paper Al-Ahram.

After the assault, which took place near the Qasr al-Dobara Church that is used as a field hospital in the current protests, the women ran to the nearby Mugamma administrative building in Tahrir Square, the Al-Ahram journalist present wrote about the incident.

Their assaulters followed them there, but the employees of the building closed the doors to block them out. Dozens of other demonstrators, who had been holding a sit-in in the square, then beat the assaulters with sticks and rocks to disperse them, and took the women to their tents in the center of the square.

The report said the Al-Ahram photographer could not take pictures of the women being assaulted, as the assaulters threatened to destroy his camera.

India, which houses 5,000 Rohingya asylum seekers, has also said little on the matter.

Udai Bhanu Singh, senior research associate at the Institute for Defense Studies and Analysis in Delhi, said such apathy cannot last longer, especially in India. “The Rohingya problem is currently not India’s main refugee problem, but it can soon be,” he said. “Bangladesh is getting stricter with its policy on the Rohingyas — their only refuge is India.”
...
Since Bangladesh has moved to evict the Rohingya settlers inside its border, more people like Ms. Begum are moving to India.
So BD has refused to take Rohingyas in, and is even deporting them. I don't see why India should take them in.

The data, although slightly dated, is extremely glaring... it will be interesting to see what this data looks like in India and in the US, for example.
This prison is majority Muslim — as is virtually every house of incarceration in France. About 60 to 70 percent of all inmates in the country’s prison system are Muslim, according to Muslim leaders, sociologists and researchers, though Muslims make up only about 12 percent of the country’s population.

On a continent where immigrants and the children of immigrants are disproportionately represented in almost every prison system, the French figures are the most marked, according to researchers, criminologists and Muslim leaders.

“The high percentage of Muslims in prisons is a direct consequence of the failure of the integration of minorities in France,” said Moussa Khedimellah, a sociologist who has spent several years conducting research on Muslims in the French penal system.

In Britain, 11 percent of prisoners are Muslim in contrast to about 3 percent of all inhabitants, according to the Justice Ministry. Research by the Open Society Institute, an advocacy organization, shows that in the Netherlands 20 percent of adult prisoners and 26 percent of all juvenile offenders are Muslim; the country is about 5.5 percent Muslim. In Belgium, Muslims from Morocco and Turkey make up at least 16 percent of the prison population, compared with 2 percent of the general populace, the research found.

Why do people do not follow Islamic principles and then blame pure muslims for implementing Sharia :?:

Afghan girl's beheading: Two arrested in Kunduz province

Afghan police have arrested two men accused of beheading a teenage girl with a knife in northern Kunduz province, officials say.

Prior to the attack, the girl's father had rejected a marriage proposal for his daughter.

"Our investigation shows those who killed her were people who wanted to marry her," police told the BBC.

The father had not wanted his daughter to get married because she was "too small to be engaged", he was quoted as saying by the Pajhwok news agency.
Why two guys wanted to marry one girl? Were they thinking of creative use of Talaq?

What a silly father. He should have asked the two to decide between themselves first who should get the girl.

Anyways, just another day (1/2/1347) in Islamic calendar.

To allow a barbarity of this scale unchallenged, even though it is committed in the name of something that is alien to our ethos, would it not be considered 'adharmic'? Doesn't our Dharma enjoin us to use our strength to bring these adharmics to justice? I know that what i am asking for is beyond the pale of possibilities and we have many more closer injustices to stop and avenge before we venture out to stop the barbarity of foreign lands. But the cruelty and sheer barbarity carried out in the name of Islam needs to be stopped by those who have the power to stop it.

Innocence of Muslims participants sentenced to death in Egypt

A court in Cairo has sentenced to death seven Egyptian Christians who were tried in absentia for participating in an anti-Islam video that prompted violent protests in many Muslim countries.

"The seven accused persons were convicted of insulting the Islamic religion through participating in producing and offering a movie that insults Islam and its prophet," said the judge, Saif al-Nasr Soliman.

The Mother of All Insults: Muslims Make a Mockery of Mecca
Islam’s holiest city of Mecca is going through another development phase — one a la Las Vegas. To make space, its historical sites are being destroyed. With the exception of a few outspoken critics, primarily the Saudi-based Islamic Heritage Research Foundation, the Muslim world has been largely silent.

Saudi Arabia claims to be the custodian of Islam’s holy sites in Medina and Mecca. As such, it has given itself a cart blanche in how it administers and manages the sites and the pilgrimage process. The 57 member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is never consulted; and as Muslims, this is essentially our city. The OIC doesn’t dare speak out against Saudi Arabia’s destructive plans.

Apparently 95% of Islam’s holiest sites have been destroyed in the last 10 years. The Prophet’s birthplace was turned into a library and the house of his first wife Khadijah, was replaced with a public toilet block. Figuratively speaking, “toilet” is an accurate metaphor of the Wahhabi’s gender outlook of women.

With the new development, old historical sites will make way for a fancier, ritual experience — if you are rich, that is.

Take, for instance, the multi-million dollar Zam Zam high-rise apartment complexes for the super rich Muslims that face Kabbah. Yes, you can observe the ritual from your luxurious air-conditioned apartment with a picture window overlooking the Kabbah while the on-site servant brings you your tea. Contrast that with the many poor Muslims who end up sleeping in the open because they cannot afford the hotel rates.

In addition to the Zam Zam Tower there are six 5 star hotels, with 4360 commercial retail stores with 24-hour shopping, making Los Angeles’ posh Rodeo Drive consumerism lame in comparison.

Mecca was the ONE place where we were all equals regardless of race, gender, social and economic status. It was a place for spiritual awakening and contemplation. That is no longer the case when the clock tower over powers the Kabbah and the King’s palace dominates the skyline.

We have allowed the corruption of Islam’s birthplace.

The protesters who are always so eager to defend Prophet Muhammad’s honor are silent. I’d like to ask those protestors: Why are you not protesting in front of the Saudi Embassies as you did in front of the American Embassies in protest of the video “Innocence of Muslims”? Surely the destruction of our holy sites is the mother of all insults!

Are you not protesting because you are too afraid your names will be black listed by the Saudi government, denying you the visa to do the pilgrimage? How are you not a hypocrite?

Why aren’t leading Muslim bloggers writing about this issue?

We Muslims need to weed out corruption and hypocrisy from within our societies. The weak protest of the destruction of our holy sites is a clear indication of our own individual hypocrisy. We are weak and we have no one to blame but ourselves. For that, we should be ashamed.

Atheists and Islam: No God, not even Allah
A MOB attacked Alexander Aan even before an Indonesian court in June jailed him for two and a half years for “inciting religious hatred”. His crime was to write “God does not exist” on a Facebook group he had founded for atheists in Minang, a province of the world’s most populous Muslim nation. Like most non-believers in Islamic regions, he was brought up as a Muslim. And like many who profess godlessness openly, he has been punished.

In a handful of majority-Muslim countries atheists can live safely, if quietly; Turkey is one example, Lebanon another. None makes atheism a specific crime. But none gives atheists legal protection or recognition. Indonesia, for example, demands that people declare themselves as one of six religions; atheism and agnosticism do not count. Egypt’s draft constitution makes room for only three faiths: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
wow. Writing "God does not exist" is "inciting religious hatred". It is certainly ROP onlee.

The situation of over representation of adherents of Mohammaddenism in prison populations around the world is mirrored in India:
• In Maharashtra, the percentage of Muslim jail inmates in all categories is way above their share in the population Muslim share in population is 10.6%, share in the total prison inmates is 32.4%.

• When it comes to those in prison for less than a year, Muslims contribute 40.6% of all prisoners in Maharashtra.

• In Gujarat, the percentage of Muslims in the state is just 9.06% but they make up over a quarter of all jail inmates.

• Assam, the second highest Muslim populated state in the country, after J&K, has 30.9% Muslims, and here, the percentage of Muslim jail inmates is 28.1.

• Even Karnataka, which did relatively better than other states in providing jobs to Muslims, shows the same trend: 17.5% of its jail inmates are Muslim as compared with 12.23% of its population.

• In Delhi, where Muslims make up 11.7% of the population, they constitute 29.1% of those in jail for less than a year. ……………………

All Indian Muslims are innocent. The incompetent Indian police arrest Muslim youth whenever something bad happens.

Since this thread is not about Indian Muslims or Islam in India, we must not discuss it.

Interesting data about the UK Muslim population...
Unemployment among ethnic minorities costs the economy almost £8.6 billion a year in benefits and lost revenue from taxes. Half of Muslim men and three quarters of Muslim women are unemployed.

I posted these kind of prison stats a few times in the last few years, where it shows the % muslims in jails in different countries is much higher in proportion to their populations amongst the whole. It's important to note that Hindu's/ Dharmics are the least likely to be convicted as a percentage. Here's one site a little dated though..

AP Adopts Islam As Its Official Religion
After all, there is no reason to name Muhammad as a prophet if you do not accept him as such.
Well, now the Associated Press stylebook apparently insists that Mohammed be preceded by the word Prophet. An Egyptian court convicted in absentia Wednesday seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor, sentencing them to death on charges linked to an anti-Islam film that had sparked riots in parts of the Muslim world….The low-budget “Innocence of Muslims,” parts of which were made available online, portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and buffoon.
The Prophet Muhammad? Really? AP prefers leaving out “Christ” after Jesus because of the theological implications and certainly doesn’t recommend referring to him as “Son of God” or “Lord and Savior” – but it has no problem with the theological claim implicit in referring to the “Prophet Muhammad”. Much of the world, however, does dispute that claim – indeed, as a Christian I reject that claim and view Muhammad as a false prophet, a fraud, and a murderous brigand. Why does the AP (and Reuters and the NY Times, among others with stylebooks) give special deference to Islamic teaching? Could it be because Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and Hindus are not going to riot and do violence to reporters who fail to give due deference to their important religious believers and beliefs?
