Pakistan’s new army doctrine comes as good news for all who wish us well as a nation. For the first time in 65 years the army has shifted its focus from the eastern border to our internal enemy in the northwest. Let us hope it does not mean hands free for a crackdown on the Baloch, an issue that needs a political solution while harder military measures may result in deeper tragedies. Although, the army spokesman assured our lions and eagles that we shall keep India as our enemy no.1, yet the admission that the enemy within is more dangerous at the moment, may well prove to be a turning point in our history. Facts and events of our history have shown that this mindset of pathological narcissism, of self-righteous self-love breeds a hundred tragedies till the society falls into paranoia and starts hurting itself and everything around it. What our army and government have now decided to fight is a threat not only to Pakistan but to the entire region’s peace. We have to combat that mindset and the forces that promote it, if we wish to survive as a state and society, whatever the amount of effort it may need, however painful the sacrifices it may demand. We cannot afford to fail, because such failure can empower nations of the region to intervene, exposing our land of anarchy to immense bloodshed and misery.
Unfortunately, the enemy within is the product of our obscure ambitions since 1947. It is of critical importance for us to understand why and how our establishment fed this monster for decades. We, the people, must know the truth if we wish to survive and grow.

The dominant classes of Pakistan that demanded separation from the rest of India in 1947 were mainly the same who had ruled India under different Muslim dynasties. They were the landed aristocracy, “pirs” and ulema of different levels. They lost power to the British, but never gave up their claim over India. Some Muslims who served the British as civil servants and the army men also joined to share the ambition for power. Being small in number these groups, even with the support of the entire Muslim population of India could not hope to dominate a huge Indian population in a democratic system. Therefore, they aroused the Muslim masses to support their demand for a separate homeland, appealing to their religious pride and fear of persecution. Congress leaders and a large number of Muslims who chose to live as Indian citizens all exerted each nerve to show our Muslim league leadership that a religious approach to politics in a world of diverse religions and people will initiate disaster but the highly aroused fears of persecution decided our course; our self-image as a special community prevailed.Shah Waliullah invited Abdali in that same capacity of a down-to-earth, power sharing priest. This same formula created the present day kingdom of Saud where a tribal chief and a holy man struck a deal. Almost a similar deal created Pakistan where Quaid-e-Azam seems to have been just a brilliant lawyer whose job ended soon after the partition.ndependence comes as jubilation to a nation. But in 1947 it came with tragedies of separation and bloodshed to the subcontinent. India overcame many of her problems because its leaders depended not on a religious class but on democracy, where the army accepted its subordinate and supporting role, while politics and diplomacy made the main defense. In Pakistan, medieval concepts dominated instead. We had been perpetually indoctrinated to love the “mujahid” and the maulana. The ulema and religious parties immediately demanded a decisive role. Landed gentry found the ulema and the army as their best protectors. That perhaps explains why no land reform has damaged them to this day.These two stake holders decided to promote each other as the champions of Islam, fighting the heretics of India as their core duty. The Kashmir problem existed only as a permanent excuse for arousing sentiment; it was never handled with the modern tools of effective diplomacy because a liberal, democratic India always found more friends against our ever deepened religious identity. Only one education was allowed and available to the nation: Fight India with the power of Islam.

Unidentified miscreants hurled two hand grenades in front of a Pakistan Air Force base, in the port city of Karachi this evening, injuring at least one person, a spokesman said.

The hand grenades were lobbed near the Base on Shahra-e-Faisal Air Base Flyover at about 7:15 pm, during busy traffic hours, the PAF spokesman said in a statement.

"One pedestrian got injured at the exit end of flyover, who was shifted to JinnahHospital for first aid," he said.

He said the security agencies were in control of the situation and were carrying out thorough investigation of the incident through all available means including CCTV footage.

"The security of all PAF Air Bases is already on high alert," the spokesman said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In May, 2011, militants had attacked the Mehran Naval base which is adjacent to the PAF base.

Around 15 people including security personnel and the attackers were killed in the 15-hour gunbattle that ensued at the naval installation.

LAHORE: An additional district and sessions judge has fixed February 7 for arguments on the after-arrest bails of four men accused of publishing allegedly blasphemous books about the Ahmadi faith.
Moeed Ayaz, Asmatullah, Razaullah and Ghulamullah, employees of Black Arrow Printing Press, were arrested on January 7 as they loaded a small truck with thousands of books and CDs. The four accused are Ahmadis. Arrest warrants have been issued for the printing press’s owner, who is at large.He said that even if the complaint were true, his clients should have been charged under Sections 6 (literal distortion of ayah text), 7 (translation or interpretation of Holy Quran contrary to belief of Muslims) and 9 (penalty) of the Punjab Holy Quran (Printing and Recording) Act of 2011 – which carry a maximum penalty of three years in prison – rather than Sections 295B (defiling the Holy Quran) and 298C (an Ahmadi calling himself a Muslim or preaching his faith) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.At their remand hearing before a magistrate, Advocate Chaudhry Ghulam Mustafa, the lawyer for the complainant, contended that the accused were planning to distribute the “blasphemous literature” in various markets. The magistrate remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days.The FIR was registered on the complaint of Muhammad Tayyab. Islampura police confiscated the material and truck and registered a case against the men on January 7 under Sections 295B and 298C of the PPC, as well as Section 24A of the Press and Publications Ordinance, though the ordinance was repealed in 2002.

Pakistan Super League: Indian players want to take part, says PCB official

KARACHI: At a time when India and Bangladesh have refused to play in Pakistan, their players have contacted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in order to take part in the Pakistan Super League which is scheduled to get underway in March.

Islamabad, Jan 27(ANI): Pakistan Super League (PSL) managing director Salman Sarwar Butt has said no Indian player has shown interest in participating in country's inaugral Twenty20 competition so far.

Ex-England wicketkeeper Phil Mustard says he wants to play in the Pakistan Super League despite safety warnings.The international players' union (Fica) described the security situation in Pakistan as "unmanageable".

Fica and England's Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) have called on players to avoid the 25 March-7 April competition because of concerns over security in Pakistan. The governing bodies of Australia and South Africa have both indicated that they would not support contracted players taking part.

Mustard: "My agent got in touch and asked if I would be interested in going. My first instinct was 'no' but in Bangladesh I have spoken to a couple of the Pakistan players and a couple of guys from the ICC [International Cricket Council]. "They say it is all going to go ahead and the security is going to be amazing. There are going to be bullet-proof buses and everything else."

Should other counties follow Durham's lead, the Pakistan Super League could take place without any players from England, Australia or South Africa, a situation that would disappoint Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi.

You are absolutely right. But it is not the "final chapter". It is the ground work being prepared in public, and undoubtedly in private, for the future of America's war in Pakistan. Pakistan, and probably to some extent parts of Afghanistan too, will be the ground in which America's remote and autonomous capabilities will be tested and refined. There will also be tactical availability of ground forces on a case by case basis as always. The ONLY thing that is going to reduce is the absolute number of American defence department and intelligence personnel, including soldiers, on the ground in AfPak. Americans are going to leave, but America is preparing to stay for a long time. Pakistan is going to be violated at will. But they will give them sweets and other colourful things to let them put their hands and other body parts here and there. It's OK. Pakistanis are used to that and understand the underlying dynamic from their experience in their own homes. They will not object too loud after a while.

Kargil requires closure

Seeking to internationalise tensions along the Line of Control, Pakistan has called for an investigation into the recent incidents there by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

“We would also welcome an OIC fact-finding mission to investigate the recent incidents of ceasefire violations along the LoC,” Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said while addressing a meeting of the OIC contact group on Kashmir in Cairo on Tuesday.

She reiterated that Pakistan is ready to work with the United Nations Military Observer Group for India and Pakistan to carry out an independent inquiry into the ceasefire violations.

Earlier, Pakistan’s attempt to rope in the United Nations by demanding a probe by UNMOGIP was foiled by India, which rejected it saying the matter can be settled bilaterally.

Ms. Khar again contended that there were “negative and hostile statements emanating from the Indian leadership” during the ceasefire violations.

She said Pakistan chose to “exercise restraints to keep the Pakistan-India peace process on track.”

“Pakistan has entered into dialogue with India in good faith to amicably resolve the Kashmir dispute. We are earnestly implementing the cross-LoC confidence-building measures to bring relief to the divided families and reduce the sufferings of the Kashmiris on both sides of the LoC,” she said in her address.

The CBMs had contributed towards creating a “congenial environment between the two countries to address the issue of Jammu and Kashmir”, she said.

Ms. Khar said she had told her Indian counterpart of the need to address the Kashmir dispute “in the larger interest of bringing peace and stability to South Asia and ameliorating the sufferings of the Kashmiri people.”

Pakistan, Ms. Khar said, is “convinced that the key to enduring peace and security in South Asia lies in resolving the longstanding dispute of Kashmir.”

Islamabad is committed to finding a peaceful solution in line with UN Security Council resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiris, she said.

“To this end we believe that the Kashmiris should be associated with the dialogue process,” she said.

Ms. Khar called on the Indian government to initiate appropriate steps for an early resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

She thanked the OIC for extending support to the Kashmir cause. She also alleged that rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir were continuing.

“Despite the signals that sometime emanate from India that the security forces presence in Kashmir would be reduced, the number of the Indian occupied forces has not gone down,” she alleged.

“Pakistan reiterates it demand and calls upon the government of India to exercise restraint, stop killing of innocent Kashmiris and ensure those responsible for such crimes are brought to justice,” she said.

The contact group on Kashmir met on the sidelines of an OIC summit.

The OIC secretary general reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to the Kashmir issue.

The contact group decided to invite Azerbaijan to join the group and attend future meetings.

'Kashmir Day' is being observed as Solidarity day across the country.

Debates and declamations in schools and colleges throughout the provinces will be arranged by the Higher Education and Elementary Education Department.

Processions are taken out across Pakistan to support the rights of Kashmiris for independence or accession to Pakistan. I was a school child when February 5 was declared Kashmir Day and also a national holiday. There used to be a lot of enthusiasm about Kashmir in Pakistan and many people believed that the unfortunately divided but stunningly beautiful Valley of Kashmir would soon join the Pakistani federation.

State-owned Pakistan Television aired immensely popular plays like Angar Wadi, an unsuccessful attempt to send a message across the Line of Control (LoC) to Kashmiri nationalists that they should embrace the concept of nationalism based on religion instead of Kashmiri culture and join Pakistan. The Kashmir jihad was in full swing and the successive Pakistani governments of the 1990s did their best to win support from the Muslim and non-Muslim world for the Pakistani stand on Kashmir. The situation took an awkward turn when Pakistan and India went to war in 1999, once again in Kashmir. Without going into the events that led to the Kargil debacle, this appeared to be the last armed struggle between the two nuclear weapon possessing neighbours. General Musharraf, in his day, even went to the extent of scrapping what used to be the principal stand of Pakistan over Kashmir, the UN resolutions. This was the height of pragmatism in the approach of the Pakistani establishment, which has since not shown any interest in reviving Pakistan's narrative on Kashmir to pre-Musharraf days.

All the major political and non-political stakeholders in Pakistan have now realised that the most sought after support of local Kashmiris to join Pakistan will always remain a distant dream. We have paid a very heavy price to learn this lesson right from the days of Operation Gibraltar to Kargil. Finally, lessons have been learnt and, with this, observation of Kashmir Day will also gradually lose its fervour like Defence Day. Kashmir belongs to the Kashmiris like Pakistan belongs to Pakistanis and India belongs to Indians.
