Re: States News and Discussions
^
Interestingly this topic cameup in NJ jirga today...
Looks like it all boils down to an individual's vision and that individual's raise to a political position. A NM, CBN, YSR, MK, etc., made the fortunes/misfortune of the state, while keeping everything else (janta, administration, infrastructure, technology, politicians, corruption ityadi) constant.
So it IS POSSIBLE to change the fortunes of Bharat if people can elect an able leader into PM position with simple majority. Everything else will follow the leader = "Yatha raja, tatha praja"
Hope they change happens soon, perhaps in 2014.

^^ But then, I read everywhere that it is not individuals that are important, but institutions and processes. Isnt that opposite to what you say above, because the institutions and processes remained the same, only the individual changed?
Re: States News and Discussions
After reading this article if you compare the way the Congress run states like one in Maharshtra and their level of corrupt governance with real performer like Modiji, and the media's deliberate disowning these facts and try to creat a monster out of him,it makes one to wonder wah'ts wrong with our country? How thoroughly these Congress under Sonia Gandhi had thoroughly corrupted every institutions of the country and successfully manipulated the media to cover all these criminal acts, are simply amazing.
GUJRAT: INCUMBENCY FACTORS
Why doesn't the anti-incumbency factor work against Narendra Modi? He has been in power for nine years. Crises that would have singed other chief ministers leave him unscathed. The answer lies in his innovative and inclusive day-to-day governance programmes which have created a public image of an administrator who cares about popular grievances.
Modi's ability to create a public perception that his government cares for sections like women, children and the poor has helped build his image.
As a leading social worker who is not a great admirer of Modi says, "His success stems from a combination of a few populist and many visionary non-populist public welfare programmes which he implements with equal vigour even when they don't hold any immediate political benefit for him. This is something new that people are seeing. Modi's ability to create a public perception that his Government cares for sections like women, children and the poor has helped further."
Feroze Shaikh, a daily wage labourer in Dhoraji in Saurashtra, will vouch for this. His four-year-old son needed immediate cardiac surgery, but Shaikh had no money to pay for it. The government stepped in and the boy was operated upon free of cost at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology in Ahmedabad like 2,000 other poor cardiac patients. A grateful Shaikh says, "There's no denying that Modi's government cares for the poor like no one else does." Says the institute's director Dr. R.K. Patel, "The scheme bears the cost of any surgery for poor patients and is unparalleled in the country and has struck a chord with the poor." Perhaps this is the key to the BJP's recent landslide victory in the state civic polls.
One of his oldest schemes is Swagat, which has won many international awards. Once a month the chief minister connects complainants, officers concerned and district collectors via video conferencing. The scheme has a very high success rate and keeps the bureaucracy on tenterhooks. One-Day Governance, a scheme under which 250 centres carry out 70 services - including issuing various certificates and licenses in a fixed time - are also monitored online.
Modi is the author of the Kanya Kelavni (girl child education) scheme, travelling to rural Gujarat once a year with his IAS officers to persuade villagers to send their girl children to school instead of just doing daily household chores. The eight-year-old Betri Bachao Andolan (Save the Girl Child Mission) scheme under the State's Women and Child Welfare Department has been spreading public awareness against sex determination tests and female infanticide. Gunotsav was an unprecedented self-appraisal drive for mapping the precise academic strength of students in the state's government schools.
Modi visited schools in Gujarat's remotest corners with his team of IAS officers to assess students and their progress with the help of a pre-set questionnaire for each standard. The exercise showed that the government school students were lagging behind their urban counterparts and helped the administration chart out a set of corrective measures.
To inculcate reading habits in students instead of letting them watch TV, last week more than 70 lakh students led by Modi simultaneously read books across the state under the Vanche Gujarat (Read Gujarat) campaign. The state government has also chalked out a programme under which scooter-borne librarians will go to villages with books and ask school students to read them under the watchful eyes of local teachers.
Later this month the chief minister is organising Gujarat Khel Mahakumbh in Gandhinagar in which 7.50 lakh students have registered for athletics and western and Indian sports disciplines; the annual state winter games have only 30,000 students participating. Ahmedabad District Collector Harit Shukla aptly puts it, "People have seen only votecatching measures like getting free colour television sets on the eve of elections. But Modi has built a brand that goes beyond votes and touches people's hearts through his peopleoriented measures at the grassroot level and his communication skills."
For Gujarat, Brand Modi seems to be worth another Assembly election.

DFS to test for chinks in armour
Gujarat will be first state in the country to have its own ballistic firing range to test bulletproof equipment
Gujarat will be first state in the country to have its own ballistic firing range to test bulletproof equipment
To shield its special force personnel with bulletproof jackets, the Gujarat government has decided to set up a ballistic firing range at the Gandhinagar Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS). Once it is set up, Gujarat will be the first state in the country to have its own centre to test bulletproof equipment including vests, helmets, glass and vehicles.
All state governments send bulletproof samples to Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory (TBRL) situated in Chandigarh for testing. Armours are purchased only after they are okayed by ballistic experts.
As it is the only laboratory where such tests are conducted, states have to wait for as long as nine months for their turn. By setting up a ballistic firing range here, the government will eliminate the waiting time, get the tests done for free and also ensure transparency. The range is expected to be functional in two months.
...
Meanwhile, plans are on to develop an open firing range at the Karai Police Academy to test bulletproof vehicles.
the DFS plans to accept samples for testing from other states. This will reduce the load on TBRL and help the DFS earn an income.

Modi Inaugurates Khel Mahakumbh
AHMEDABAD | NOV 20, 2010
AHMEDABAD | NOV 20, 2010
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated "Khel Mahakumbh", a sporting event as part of the state's golden jubilee year celebrations in which over 16 lakh youths will be taking part.
Gold medallist from Gujarat at the just concluded Commonwealth Games Lajja Goswami led the torch rally for the event. World chess champion Vishwanath Anand was also present on the occasion.
Modi said that he aims to create a sports culture and sporting spirit in the state, make sports an inseparable part of life of youths, and wants to build a talent pool of outstanding sports persons, through this month-long Mahakumbh.
"It is regrettable that the we as a nation of 100 crore people can not win many medals in the international sporting events," Modi said.
Referring to the Khel Mahakumbh, he said, "nearly 16-lakh people taking part in a single sports event is in itself a history. I do not expect wonders from just this one sports meet. It is just a beginning", he added.
The sporting event will start at panchayat level, then it will be played at taluka level and subsequently at district level. Individuals and teams qualifying at district level will then play at state level competitions.
The highlights of the opening ceremony attended by a large number of people were yoga feats by 3,500 students, theme song, myriad dance forms to the drumbeats of percussion instruments from different parts of the country.

Jagan hints at Congress exit; his channel attacks Sonia, PM http://www.zeenews.com/news669441.html
Hyderabad: It appears Congress leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the son of late former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajashekara Reddy, has decided to part ways with the party.
After several warnings that he was running out of patience to occupy the CM’s post following his father’s death in a helicopter crash last year, a belligerent Kadapa MP, Jaganmohan Reddy’s television channel has launched a frontal attack on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi as well as the party.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also targeted along with the “coterie around Sonia” for the “sorry state of affairs in Congress”.
Though Jagan himself has not said anything directly against Gandhi, Singh or Congress, Sakshi television news channel owned by him ran an hour-long special programme Friday night and Saturday morning targeting Gandhi’s leadership and “rapid degeneration” of the party under her.
Ever since Jagan was denied the chief minister’s post after his father’s death, Sakshi newspaper and television channel have been running stories severely criticising Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah and his government’s policies.
Jagan’s rival groups in the party too have been subjected to attacks in his media but this is for the first time that Sakshi chose to take on the Congress high command directly.
Political observers here see Sakshi’s story as a prelude to Jagan’s ambitious future political plans.
“That he has chosen to target the party high command in general and Sonia Gandhi in particular through his television channel is an obvious indication that Jagan is preparing ground for his exit from Congress,” one political observer said.
“Sonia is neither the president of India nor the prime minister but she is dictating the politics of the country,” screamed a headline even as several critical remarks were made against her in the voice-over in the Telugu news channel.
“He has been just a rubber stamp,” Sakshi remarked, taking potshots at Manmohan Singh in the light of the recent observations of Supreme Court in the 2G spectrum case.
The snide remarks against their leaders have left many a Congress leader in the state seething.
Chief Minister Rosaiah condemned the story and said in a statement last night that the episode titled 'Hastagatham' on the affairs of Congress party was highly distorted with malice and was far from truth.
Known Sonia loyalist and Jagan-baiter, V Hanumantha Rao, was the first to spit fire against his young parliamentary colleague for trying to pour scorn on a “great leader” like Sonia.
“This is an unpardonable mistake that Jagan has committed. The time has come to expose him,” Hanumantha Rao, a member of Rajya Sabha, said and appealed to Congress workers to boycott Sakshi newspaper and television channel run by the Kadapa MP.
The special story was telecast to mark the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Congress party.
The report said the grand old party was on a “rapid degeneration” across the country and even Sonia Gandhi herself was facing rough weather in Rae Bareilly constituency.
“Sonia is not a good orator and cannot address a gathering fluently. Her mass following is on the decline,” it claimed.
“The various scandals that broke out under the United Progressive Alliance regime over the last six years have become a noose around the Congress’ neck. The party high command is facing a torrid time as the situation is going out of hand,” the Sakshi story said.
In fact, the story also had reference to the Bofors scandal. Sonia’s political secretary Ahmed Patel was singled out from among the “coterie” for the attack.
“In Patel’s native Gujarat, the Congress has been decimated completely,” the story said.

He said all the scandals that were alleged to have happened during YS Rajasekhara Reddy's tenure would be dug out and exposed.
"As loyal party workers, we shall not keep quiet. We are ready to take on him head-on," the Rajya Sabha member asserted.
Meanwhile, senior leaders in the state party like Palvai Govardhan Reddy, P Shankar Rao and others are getting ready to petition the high command against Jagan with reference to the story telecast in Sakshi.

A mandate for Nitish Kumar
A mandate for Nitish Kumar
Wow. Eh? Heartening indeed. Jai ho.Because, in our countryside, the walls are the most popular and democratic mass medium, and the best mirror of the current state of economics. And so, given how prosperous or backward a region is, you can find writings on the wall selling just about anything — ranging from the latest cars and immigration to “Kanada” in Punjab, to fertilisers and tractors in coastal Andhra, to little more than snuff or anti-itch creams in the poorest districts of east-central tribal India. In Bihar, you would often have seen nothing, because people either had no surplus to buy anything but basic food, or because there were no pucca walls — though I had reported from my travels in the two elections held in 2005 the sighting of the first such writings, selling what else but private education, mostly English medium schools and coaching centres for engineering and medical college admissions.
Wow again. More power to the real heroes of desi politics - the few good men left in this sordid melee. Jai ho jai ho.So, come on a drive with me to Bihar and I will show you a sight to cherish, one to light up your eyes, cheer your saddest, darkest hour, put a bounce in your step and, most of all, convince you once again that there is hope even for the worst governed, the most neglected parts of our country. It is the young girls, dozens and dozens and scores and scores of them, often in school uniforms, riding bicycles on the state’s new roads. Don’t miss the link between the roads, bicycles, uniforms, and the result this coming Wednesday. Nitish decided to attack the problem of low enrolment and large dropout rates for his state’s girls by offering a free bicycle to any girl moving to class nine. Four lakh bicycles have been distributed so far, and you already see a revolution of sorts on the wheels. Meanwhile, his high school enrolment for women has trebled.
If you want convincing beyond the writings on the wall, the underwear ads, then look at people’s feet, look at the roads, look at the bicycles and the proudly smiling faces of some of India’s still poorest young women riding them. You will see change, change for the better, and change brought about entirely through old-fashioned democratic politics that we, the urban well-heeled, so love to denounce as India’s curse.
Re: States News and Discussions
When lonely Lalu misses ‘gentleman’ Sonia
You soon get a chance to put that to the Writings on the Wall test. At Sangrampur, a picturesque, winding 40-odd km drive from Banka, at a halwai shop called “Gupta Hotel” where flies in millions endorse the quality of mithai, I conduct a quick census of how many of the 29 people hanging around there — rickshaw-pullers and casual labourers lounging on the rickshaws while they wait for work — have cellphones. Can you guess the result? All 29. Now, all of them are very very poor people, all of them could do with better nourishment. But starving they aren’t. And while they will fall below any reasonably defined poverty line, they are not living on less than Rs 20 a day, as many of our Great Establishment Povertarians claim 83.6 crore Indians do. In fact, if you see this purely anecdotal score of 29 out of 29 in such a poor region, the telecom industry’s figure of 75 crore phones looks totally real. So where are the 80 per cent Indians “living on less than Rs 20 a day”?
The wisdom thrown up by the cellphone census is affirmed later as we stop at an IndianOil petrol pump near the Barauni refinery that has a well-stocked grocery store which even sells oodles of branded ice-cream. I stand in the queue to pay, behind four customers who do not look like they would come to buy ice-cream, and they haven’t. Each one, a local labourer or casual worker, has come to buy “recharge” for his mobile phone prepaid card.
This water gives this district its only privilege: irrigation. Which, in turn, gives it the one thing it is proud of, its wonderfully fragrant “katrani” rice, a small-grain, sweet cousin of the basmati family. I brought home some and it is delicious. Somebody at Katoria says they want to apply for a GI certification. Dreams of GI certification in Banka, one of India’s poorest districts, where, if you follow the NAC-Povertarian definition, 100 per cent should be living at less than ten rupees a day?
Lalu, of course, would not agree. But the usual bluster is gone. “Sarkar to jod-tod ke hamaari hi banegi,” he taps me on the arm and whispers, almost apologetically, after he has fed us a sizeable high tea. Indian politicians’ minds, actually, are quite easy to read when they are in trouble. For example, when a leader starts discussing his strategic errors in the middle of a campaign, you know he thinks his time is up. Lalu says his big mistake was insisting on the imposition of president’s rule after Nitish failed to secure a vote of confidence in the first, inconclusive election of 2005. Then, he would imply, Buta Singh as governor messed up everything. “If only I had listened to Soniaji,” he says. “She pleaded so many times with me not to insist on president’s rule, but I did not listen.”
And then he tells you what he is missing, the comforting embrace of the Congress party, a share of power at the Centre. “Soniaji, hum aapse kehte hain, is very good, noble, gentleman lady. Humne unki nahin suni.” Of course, his other regret is alienating the upper castes. “I was never against them. I only talk. Lalu is like the two-headed snake. He only hisses, but cannot bite,” he says,
Sonia and Rahul both draw much better crowds than you have seen at Congress rallies in the past in Bihar, but it is difficult to see these translating into votes, as their message of Nitish’s ineptitude and corruption, or hypocrisy on communalism, does not yet wash. At Sonia’s really large rally at Begusarai, a group of schoolboys in uniform snigger as they mimic her delivery of the word “chintajanak” with one vowel compressed and the other stretched. But her rapidly-improving Hindi diction is not the problem. The problem could, in fact, be the kind of talent Rahul’s hunt has thrown up, at least in Bihar. His newly-elected Youth Congress chief Lallan Kumar was “caught” that very morning in an EC raid with nearly Rs 6 lakh in cash, and was now a most disastrous crowd-warmer until Sonia arrived. “Look at Nitish’s raj,” he said, “where milk has dried up in all of Bihar’s mothers’ breasts, but ministers are feeding milk to their dogs in Patna.” Now, you may love or hate dogs, but if this is the kind of genius Rahul’s talent-hunt is finding, you might be better off even with the idiots of the past.

I've read Digvijay Singh (former CM of MP) is Rahul Gandhi's political manager, and is responsible for opening a direct front against the RSS. He's also credited with opposing Chidambaram's approach to the naxals.

Congress to get majority in Bihar: Anil Sharma
Anil Sharma, may have no connections with Bollywood, but is the inadvertent director of the Hindi film Gadar starring 2-GBihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) chief Anil Sharma today claimed that the Congress Party would form the next government in the state irrespective of the canard about infighting within the party being spread by its opponents and particularly the chief minister Nitish Kumar.
''We will not allign with any party -- particularly the RJD-LJP combine and will contest the coming assembly elections on our own strength and form the next government with the support of people by getting two third majority'', Sharma claimed.

Congress on resurrection course in Bihar
Four is five less than nine which was the total of seats Congress bagged last time around.Riding high on the euphoria generated by recent visits of All India Congress Committee general Secretary Rahul Gandhi and a battery of its Union ministers, the Congress is going it all alone this assembly elections in Bihar, hoping for a better showing.
Buoyed with the success of the recent visits of Rahul Gandhi and others and a number of heavyweights from the RJD and the LJP joining the party, the grand old party expects a better showing during this election, state Congress spokesperson Prem Chandra Mishra said.
Re: States News and Discussions
The whole verdict is historic. There was never a sweep in Bihar's history. Here JDU is 110 as per trends 10 short of going on its own. BJP has does exceptionally well with 87 on its own. It can go with Laloo+Paswan to form its own government too. This is all just numerically speaking. Even inside the coalition it is too many seats gain for BJP. It contested 102 and got 87. It is just unbeleivable. INC at 7 is irrelevant here.
Extreme interesting point based on initial trends and comments is BJP got more Muslim vote than JDU, RJD and INC which is a shoker. This happened in Gujarat panchayat elections and now in Bihar. This is the reason for INC's allegations of EVM rigging against BJP in Gujarat.
Another point is again all exit polls (putting NDA at 160-170) failed but Yogendra Yadav's research (200 for NDA) on CNN-IBN came correct.
The biggest gain of BJP is not predicted by any one at all and that is a sad surprise for many on the TV channels.
Future possibilities - A secular third front with BJP support can form the central government and baased how many seat either Nithish or TDP gets. We may mostly see Nitish as PM if not CBN.

Lates Trend: 243 - 200 led by BJP/JD, Cong Leading in 7 now.
^^It would be better if BJP forms govt with secular parties. This will wash of Psec's sins.

All fine and dandy. But how about first getting rid of Yeddyurappa first?.BJP does'nt have the testicular fortitude to do that. Despite everything ManMohan Singh got Dr Artiste to back down and got the resignation of a certain strongly rumored and openly talked about Ms FruitSpeech's boyfriend.Lates Trend: 243 - 200 led by BJP/JD, Cong Leading in 7 now.

Cong did boot out Chavan and a long list of other corrupt scoundrels when they misbehaved and did lafda. Let us see the BJP put money where their mouth is!

Re: States News and Discussions
The NDA Government which is not led by BJP PM seems to be a reality not by design but by force. The current UPA government is not sustainable with Bihar type results. In Rajyasabha UPA (not just INC) is not in majority. Now BJP and NDA will gain more at the expense of RJD and Paswan. This is the real bad news from INC's perspective. The governance deadlock is a serious issue and pressure cooker has to blow out in one way or other way.

BJP will have embarrassment as they are sticking to Yeddi.
Re: States News and Discussions
The regional chieftains will coalesce towards whichever party (INC or BJP) that has the most seats. With JDU getting 117, they can join UPA and go with INC for Bihar now.Muppalla wrote:The NDA Government which is not led by BJP PM seems to be a reality not by design but by force. Yes. That is guaranteed to shut out Laloo and assorted jokers out forever! BJP will get decimated (uppercaste votes will switch to Congress away from BJP if it is a winning alliance .. cong & bjp go for the same uppercaste base, muslims will also migrate to Congress). The regional chieftains will coalesce towards whichever party (INC or BJP) that has the most seats. With JDU getting 117, they can join UPA and go with INC for Bihar now
The only downside is Nitish has anti congress politics in his blood (he and laloo are essentially from the anti congress camp) and Congress locks itself out of Bihar too forever.
Maybe an Indira Gandhi /MGR like trade can work in Bihar. 2/3rds of MLA seats go to JDU, while 2/3rds of MPS go to Congress. All peace and progress onree.
BJP and Lalloo can never come together. Opposition gets divided and decimated. All shock and awe resulting in a major longer term Shakinah. All, yes, long term JDU+ Congress is the way to go in the next Lok Sabha election , IFF JDU falls short of simple majority by itself by around 7 seats or so, which the congress can fill in to keep the state govt stable.

Now media and dirty political parties will think twice before playing caste based politics and reporting.
Every now and then media uses caste words - nitish is kurmi, yeddy is lingayat, lalu/mulayams are yadav etc. the people of gujarat and bihar have shown not only to india but to the world that indians are not divided on caste. Indians vote for merit and performance. any such efforts by stupid political parties will gradually meet their political death. This is more significant since bihar was one known to be hotbet of caste based politics.
now, my only expectation from Nitish Kumar is that he should shave daily. Nitish, it does not look good that everyday white stub protrude out and spoils image of your innocent look.

In case of congress their leaders name came out during investigation, in Yeddy its opposition accusation. So BJP may buy some time.vina wrote:All fine and dandy. I am guessing even die hard BJP fan wants Yeddy to be punished.
And what is so kosher about changing CM or any minister, only to come back after few months. Where is prosecution? I don't see any one in Jail other than Jharkhand ex CM. SG is herself accused in corruption. She also helped her Italian gang to take away money.
