Twelve men have been arrested during a major anti-terrorist operation, West Midlands Police said.
The men - five from Cardiff, four from Stoke-on-Trent and three from London - were detained on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism in the UK.
The suspects, aged between 17 and 28, were detained by unarmed officers about 0500 GMT.
Officers are now conducting searches at the men's homes and other addresses.
West Midlands Police said in a statement: "All were arrested at or near their home addresses, with the exception of one suspect from Stoke who was at a domestic property in Birmingham.
"Searches are now being conducted at the home addresses, plus the address in Birmingham and another residence in London.
"The suspects will be held at police stations in central London, the North West and the West Midlands."
Unarmed officers
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates, national lead for counter-terrorism policing, said it was a "large-scale, pre-planned, intelligence-led" operation involving several forces.
"The operation is in its early stages so we are unable to go into detail at this time about the suspected offences," he said.
"However, I believe it was necessary at this time to take action in order to ensure public safety."
The BBC's Danny Shaw said counter-terrorism sources had described the operation as significant and it was related to an investigation into al-Qaeda-inspired terrorism.
"The suspects are believed to have been involved in a plot against targets in the UK," he said. "This is not believed to have been a potential plot of a Mumbai-style attack, but a plot involving explosives or bombs."
Our home affairs correspondent said the officers who arrested the men were unarmed, suggesting the police felt there was no serious threat against them.
He added that it was probably not an imminent plot and some of the suspects were from Bangladesh.

Malaysia May Charge 200 for Deviating from Islam
Associated Press
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—More than 200 Muslim Shiites—including Iranians, Indonesians and Pakistanis—were detained in one of the biggest swoops on outlawed Muslim sects in Malaysia and may be charged with breaching Islamic laws, an official said Monday.
Government authorities in Muslim-majority Malaysia consider only the Sunni denomination to be legal. Sunni Islam is the world's largest branch of the religion, followed by Shia Islam.
Islamic officials raided a shop house in the Gombak district in central Selangor state last week and arrested the group, who were allegedly followers of the outlawed Shia sect, said Nurhamizah Othman, a public relations officer at the Selangor Islamic Religious Department.
It was the largest swoop of outlawed groups in recent months, the department director, Muhammad Khusrin Munawi, told state media. He said the Shia doctrine is a threat to national security because it permits the killing of Muslims from other sects who are regarded as infidels.
Ms. Nurhamizah confirmed the comments.
Malaysia, a Southeast Asian country of 28 million people, is wary of religious sects that go against mainstream Islam, fearful that they may alter its image as a moderate Muslim nation. Malay Muslims make up about 60% of the population, while most of the rest are Buddhists, Hindus or Christians from the ethnic Chinese and Indian communities.
The arrests of the Shia followers have been slammed by some religious scholars, who accused Islamic authorities of becoming more hard-lined.
"Malaysia is trying to become a country a la Taliban that only allows one school of thought," said prominent Muslim scholar Asri Zainul Abidin.
"Even though I personally don't agree with Shia teachings and even frequently criticize and debate with them, I cannot accept the approach of the allegedly democratic Malaysian government in denying the people's right to practice their faith," he said.
Ms. Nurhamizah said the detainees have all been released on bail, except two Iranians. Most are likely to be charged in an Islamic court with following the teachings of a deviationist movement, which carries a penalty of up to two years in jail, she said.
Among those detained were lecturers, students of higher-learning institutions, lawyers and government employees believed to have been operating in the area for nearly two years, she said. No further details were immediately available.

Pakistan not seeking seat in Security Council: Qureshi

Yes and the sun is not going to rise from the west.ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Monday that Pakistan was not seeking a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Qureshi said Pakistan was in favour of the expansion of the UNSC. However, he said that a broad international consensus was needed for the restructuring of the Security Council.

Militants destroy 2 NATO tankers in NW Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani government official says militants have fired rockets at a NATO convoy carrying supplies to Afghanistan, destroying two oil tankers and wounding two people.
Iqbal Khan says traffic along the route has been suspended after Monday's attack in the Khyber tribal region.
He says two people traveling in the tankers sustained burns when the trucks were engulfed in flames.
Taliban militants occasionally attack trucks on NATO's main supply route through Pakistan, though the vast majority of the goods are untouched. Criminal gangs also sometimes destroy the vehicles.![]()

2 days ago when Wen was in Poakland I saw an interesting news item. Was too bust to post here. China values Pakistan partly because thinese are sh1t scared of what might happen in Xinjiang. And that is wht Wen talks the language of Bush as in "frontline ally". Clearly (and naturally) everyone is worried about violence whcih might bite his ass and Xinjiang can certainly bite Chinese ass. What was interesting about the news was Wen's language - i.e how Pakistan is helping to bring stability in Xinjiang.

http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/n ... nid=166551Might an EU offer to waive all duties on certain items from Pakistan harm our exports ?
Let me first clarify that the issue has nothing to do with Pakistan's application to become a beneficiary of GSP-plus, as has been incorrectly reported in some newspapers. The EU submitted a proposal to the WTO to provide additional autonomous trade preferences, or duty-free access, to Pakistan -- initially for two years on 75 dutiable product lines. This proposal requires a waiver from the WTO's normal arrangements. The objective of this proposal is to help Pakistan, in addition to the humanitarian aid provided, to overcome the economic hardship that the country is facing following the unprecedented and devastating floods of 2010. The selected items amount to almost 900 million euros in import value, accounting for about 27 percent of the EU's imports from Pakistan. However, the EU's proposal does not include a waiver for the main RMG export items from Bangladesh to EU. Most of the items are yarns and fabrics, for which Bangladesh is not in competition with Pakistan in the EU market. The proposal also includes four categories of clothing/RMG with a quantitative ceiling or quota reflecting the annual average export from Pakistan.

Pakistan attacks India over UN seat
Pakistan on Monday accused India of dividing the international community by demanding a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told the National Assembly that Pakistan did not desire membership of the top UN body, the Express Tribune newspaper said.
In a written reply, the minister said the idea of permanent membership was "contrary to the spirit of democracy and accountability".
In an obvious reference to India, Qureshi said that "some aspirants for the UNSC seat are creating divisions among the international community".
He said the restructuring of the Security Council should be carried out only with consensus.

Foreign investment - Competing with India: the free market strategy
It is the question that every Pakistani hates answering when posed by a foreign investor: “Why should I not invest in India instead?” Yet this need not be an uncomfortable moment, for there is an answer that is likely to be music to the ears of an international investor: “Because our market is freer than India’s.”

Ooops, CIA World Factbook:Pakistan, in some respects, is also an easier market to operate in – given the fact that an estimated 55 per cent of the population now lives in areas that can be classified as urban, as opposed to other South Asian markets that are still overwhelmingly rural. Urban areas have higher concentrations of people and are thus more profitable for retailers, who depend on high foot traffic.

urban population: 36% of total population (2008)
rate of urbanization: 3% annual rate of change (2005-10 est.)

U.S. Military Seeks to Expand Raids in Pakistan
WASHINGTON — Senior American military commanders in Afghanistan are pushing for an expanded campaign of Special Operations ground raids across the border into Pakistan’s tribal areas, a risky strategy reflecting the growing frustration with Pakistan’s efforts to root out militants there.
The proposal, described by American officials in Washington and Afghanistan, would escalate military activities inside Pakistan, where the movement of American forces has been largely prohibited because of fears of provoking a backlash.
The plan has not yet been approved, but military and political leaders say a renewed sense of urgency has taken hold, as the deadline approaches for the Obama administration to begin withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan. Even with the risks, military commanders say that using American Special Operations troops could bring an intelligence windfall, if militants were captured, brought back across the border into Afghanistan and interrogated.
Additionally, in recent years, Afghan militias backed by the C.I.A. have carried out a number of secret missions into Pakistan’s tribal areas. These operations in Pakistan by Afghan operatives, known as Counterterrorism Pursuit Teams, have been previously reported as solely intelligence-gathering operations. But interviews in recent weeks revealed that on at least one occasion, the Afghans went on the offensive and destroyed a militant weapons cache.
The decision to expand American military activity in Pakistan, which would almost certainly have to be approved by President Obama himself, would amount to the opening of a new front in the nine-year-old war, which has grown increasingly unpopular among Americans. It would run the risk of angering a Pakistani government that has been an uneasy ally in the war in Afghanistan, particularly if it leads to civilian casualties or highly public confrontations.
Still, one senior American officer said, “We’ve never been as close as we are now to getting the go-ahead to go across.”
Still, as evidence mounts that Pakistani troops are unlikely to stage a major offensive into the militant stronghold of North Waziristan, where Al Qaeda’s top leaders are thought to be taking shelter, United States commanders have renewed their push for approval to send American commando teams into Pakistan.
In announcing the results of a review of the strategy in Afghanistan, Obama administration officials said they were considering expanded American operations to deal with threats inside Pakistan. They offered no specifics.
In interviews in Washington and Kabul, American officials said that officers were drawing up plans to begin ground operations to capture or kill leaders from the Taliban and the Haqqani network. American officers say they are particularly eager to capture, as opposed to kill, militant leaders, who they say can offer intelligence to guide future operations.
Even before finalizing any plans to increase raids across the border, the Obama administration has already stepped up its air assaults in the tribal areas with an unprecedented number of C.I.A. drone strikes this year. Since September, the spy agency has carried out more than 50 drone attacks in North Waziristan and elsewhere — compared with 60 strikes in the preceding eight months.
In interviews, the officials offered a more detailed description of two operations since 2008 in which Afghans working under the direction of the C.I.A. — a militia called the Paktika Defense Force — crossed the border into Pakistan. They also offered a richer account of the activities of these militia groups throughout the country.
According to an Afghan political leader, one of the raids was initiated to capture a Taliban commander working inside Pakistan. When the Afghan troops reached the compound, they did not find the Taliban commander, but the Pakistani militants opened fire on them, the Afghan said.
An American official disputed this account, saying that the C.I.A. militias are not sent over the border to capture militant leaders, but merely to gather intelligence.
In a second raid, the Paktika militia attacked and destroyed a Taliban ammunition depot and returned to base, officials said. Both of the C.I.A.-backed raids were aimed at compounds only a few miles inside Pakistani territory.
The Paktika Defense Force is one of six C.I.A.-trained Afghan militias that serve as a special operations force against insurgents throughout Afghanistan. The other militias operate around the cities of Kandahar, Kabul and Jalalabad as well as in the rural provinces of Khost and Kunar.
One American military officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the C.I.A.-backed militia near Khost had recently deployed in the mountains along the Pakistan border, where it would spend the winter trying to intercept Taliban fighters. So far, the C.I.A.-backed force has proven effective, he said.
“The rockets we endured for the past seven months suddenly dried up,” the officer said.

I had to debate with myself whether to post in BENIS or here...finally decided to let the mods decide.

Indian parliament attack — what it achieved for India ---- Momin Iftikhar
Immediately following the parliament attack India unleashed a reign of terror to break the back of Kashmiri resistance. To drive home the ‘victim of terror syndrome’, it managed to airlift hundreds of Taliban fighters from Afghanistan jails and used them as clay pigeons to conduct fake encounters in IHK;cashing in on India’s long association with Northern Alliance warlords, now in power in Kabul. The trend become deeply embedded in the Indian army culture whereby fake encounters in Kashmir have become the short cut for the up and coming ambitious Indian army officers intent upon securing a promising career.

My word!
The Pakistani newspapers do employ a good bunch of dimwits whose only qualification seems to be to be able to write in moderately correct english.
The news of course is churned out by the eye ass eye media cell.
If people remember the Pee TV broadcasts, they have had a news section about 'Indian atrocities in occupied kashmir' ever since Pakistan TV and Radio came into being. The usual news went along the lines of "Indian forces and army have further increased their atrocities of the common people of kashmir" and"Indian forces and army have further increased false encounters and rapes of women in occupied kashmir"
I used to wonder, how can someone 'further increase' something day after day after day hain ji?
This news used to be on EVERY DAY, it still is on to this day, the only time they don't have this news is when there is a military coup there. Then Pee TV and Radio Pakistan will go off air for a few hours, news reporters will suddenly get neutral to the gobernment, start calling their PeeEmm by his name instead of prefixing PeeEmm to the name, and the news would sound like it is a hand out by the media cell, containing clipped fauji language to describe the events. Obviously the 'cries of kashmir' will be forgotten in view of the more important things that the media cell would have at hand.
What the Pakistanis don't realize is that they are only churning out a generation of dimwits who'll grow up listening to garbage which passes off for news and journalism, because the eye ass eye thought the best way to preserve the prime position of the pakistani army was to keep the common abdul fed with a pack of lies about their own superiority and India's atrocities.
