i read a while ago one of the rebel "brigades" operating in north aleppo consists of a few dozen who specialize in hell cannon artillery and have a holding of some 20 such weapons. I think "division" should also be read with pinches of similar salt. normal rules of manpower applies to no side in syria or iraq

Putin knows that ultimately only a political settlement will resolve the crisis,at least for now.A situ where Assad remains and Ru strat. interests are in place while a cease-fire exists so that "jaw-jaw" can take place instead of "war-war",leaves him and Russia still in pole position in Syria. He has proved his point, with the massive air strikes, that no deal can be made without Russia involved. The US has it appears finally realized the truth of this, even as they may have a "Plan B" in their pockets with the Saudis. The Turks have been exposed and are in disarray and as the ground situ improves for Assad by the day,he looks more solid, with the backing of Russia.A ceasefire also gives the Russians and Syrian army a respite,a breather, from which they can strengthen forces, take stock of the mil situ and plan the next phase of mil ops should the ceasefire fail.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/f ... ort-russia Vladimir Putin takes personal charge of Syria ceasefire effort
Russian president appears to be investing political capital in making truce a reality, phoning leaders in key countries as well as ordering cut in airstrikes
Patrick Wintour Diplomatic editor
Wednesday 24 February 2016
Vladimir Putin has taken personal charge of efforts to turn a Syrian ceasefire into reality this weekend, holding a frantic round of phone calls with world leaders and instructing the Russian military to reduce the number of airstrikes over the past two days.
The Russian president spoke by phone to leaders in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Syria in an attempt to garner support for the ceasefire, and explain its complex details.
He has also opened a coordination centre to which the warring parties can send complaints of specific breaches of the truce. Some armed groups in Syria have already signed up to the truce, according to Russia. Jihadi groups Islamic State and al-Nusra Front are excluded under the terms of the ceasefire, agreed between Washington and Moscow on Monday. It is not clear whether all Syrian opposition groups – some with indirect links to al-Nusra Front – will sign up to those terms, threatening the ceasefire’s credibility.
This ceasefire deal could bring peace closer for Syria
Mary Dejevsky
The opposition parties, gathered under the Saudi-sponsored negotiating committee, have not given a definitive endorsement of the truce. The opposition fears Syrian government forces, backed by the Russian air force, will continue to attack rebels under the pretext of targeting al-Nusra.
There is also scepticism in London about the Russian initiative being genuine, and not an effort to buy time and strengthen the Syrian army.
The UK has long been doubtful that Russia’s foreign secretary, Sergei Lavrov, is the decisionmaker on Moscow’s Syrian policy, arguing that Putin calls the shots with a small coterie of national security advisers. That Putin is injecting political capital into the ceasefire process may therefore be encouraging.
In a space of three hours on Wednesday, he spoke on the phone to the Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, and Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu.
It is possible Putin’s close involvement is a sign that he recognises the civil war, now entering its fifth year, will not end through military means, and that he gauges the geographical gains made by the Syrian government forces – particularly around Aleppo in the past three months – have sufficiently strengthened Assad’s hand at the negotiating table.

So far Russian casualties have been relatively light. It was claimed but not confirmed or reported in Moscow that a group of generals were killed in an attack on a Russian airbase in eastern Syrian by rebel group Ahrar al-Sham, which has links to al-Qaida but opposes Isis.
A ceasefire before the start of political talks would allow forces to be trained on Isis in northern and western Syria, Barack Obama said after agreeing to the truce initiative with Putin in a phone call on Monday.
But Obama sounded a cautious note on Wednesday about steps the US and Russia are taking to put in place the ceasefire, despite also citing progress in pushing the Islamic State group out of territory in Iraq and Syria.
Obama’s comments came after meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House, where the two leaders said that pursuing the political process designed to end the civil war and take the fight to Isis are their top priorities in Syria.
“We are very cautious about raising expectations on this,” Obama said. “The situation on the ground is difficult.”
Meanwhile, in a positive step the UN security council was told that the first UN air drop of 21 tonnes of aid to the besieged city of Deir ez-Zor has been successfully completed. The UN had always said it would use food drops as a last resort.
The UN aid chief, Stephen O’Brien, said some 110,000 people living in besieged towns had received aid and that deliveries, including air drops, to a further 230,000 people in cutoff areas in Syria had been approved. But he also stressed the Syrian government was still blocking 40 inter-agency requests to deliver aid to hard to reach and besieged areas.
“Granting access should never be dependent on political negotiations or ad hoc deals on the ground,” O’Brien said. He added: “It is hard to believe that this conflict can be resolved as long as there continues to be a complete absence of protection for civilians.”

The political solution a.k.a. cease fire could be because of US threat to split Syria which is not desirable for either Russia or Syria (Assad). Hence, the Russians took the initiative here.
One important piece of information is that the Coordination center between parties agreeing to the cease fire is located at the Hmeimim airbase where the RuAF is deployed and the Russian Ops center in Syria is located. Russians have given clear access to all communication lines from this Coordination center to the US.
It is hard to miss the advantage to RuAF by having the Coordination center next to the Ops center. They will be the first to know and act on any emergent development.

One day after losing Khanasser to the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), the Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” and their allies have restored security to this strategic city after a violent battle with the terrorists that occupied this desert area in northern Syria.
According to the media coordinator for Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigade), the Syrian Armed Forces liberated Khanasser this morning after breaking through ISIS’ defenses at the southern perimeter of the city yesterday afternoon. The source further added that the death toll for the Syrian Armed Forces since the start of this battle is 58; this number is made-up of 31 soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army’s 47th Regiment of the 11th Tank Division, 8 soldiers from Liwaa Al-Quds, 4 fighters from Kataebat Al-Ba’ath (Al-Ba’ath Battalion), 11 soldiers from the Tiger Forces/Republican Guard and 4 soldiers from the Syrian Air Defense.
ISIS’ death toll is currently unknown at the moment; however, they are expected to have a much higher casualty count, given the intense Russian bombardment these last 2 days. In addition to recapturing Khanasser this morning, the Tiger Forces have also reportedly reentered the imperative village of Shillalah Al-Kabeera in the Khanasser Plains’ northern countryside after an intense battle with ISIS yesterday night.

however there is a battle for markadah for sure as the tweet above claims IS sent some 300 off deir to defend that bastion and other villages.
more they approach Deir, more the chances the arab tribes (al shaitat) will have a final uprising and drag the rodents from their holes and beat them to death with bricks and stones. its going to happen.

Re: The Levant crisis.(Israel,SYRIA,Lebanon, etc) - II
On Tuesday afternoon, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) conducted its 3rd offensive at the strategic Deir Ezzor Military Airport, attacking the Syrian Arab Army’s first line of defense at the southeastern perimeter of this large military installation in eastern Syria.
ISIS began their assault by launching multiple VBIEDs (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) in the direction of the guard tower at the northern farms of Al-Muri’iyah; however, all of the VBIEDs failed to reach their intended destinations, thanks in large part to the alert soldiers protecting the checkpoints around the military installation.
Following the VBIED attacks, several ISIS fighters charged the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses in the wide-open fields of the Al-Muri’iyah Farms; this resulted in heavy losses for the terrorist group, including Abu Sayyaf Al-Leebi (Libyan) and a number of other foreigners from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Chechnya, and Kuwait.
With several waves of terrorists failing to bypass the Syrian Armed Forces’ defenses in Al-Muri’iyah, the ISIS Central Command finally withdrew their remaining fighters in order to avoid adding to their growing casualty list.
While ISIS was busy attacking the Syrian Army’s defenses at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, the Russian Air Force took it upon themselves to devastate several sites belonging to the terrorist group. Among the Russian Air Force’s primary targets on Wednesday were the Political Bridge, the Sugar Factory, Abukamaal, Al-Mayadeen, and Ayyash.

IS seems to lack the more sophisticated infantry tactics of the western rebels many of whom are either former soldiers or chechen types with prior experience. they also seem quite lacking in artillery at the moment.
we shall see what they are made of in syria soon...so far in shahdadi, tishreen, hasakah, sinjar they could not give a good fight.

Multiple geo political developments on the Syria front which may have a bearing:
Lebanon: Starting yesterday, Saudi Arabia and its Sunni munna states in the Gulf region have been sequentially asking their citizens to vacate Lebanon. This could be because Lebanon is the new battlefront for all out terrorist attack or a signal that Lebanon could expect large scale Israeli attacks. Hezbollah's (and also for a lot of Shia) spiritual leader, Nasrallah, had recently warned Iran of large Ammonium storage in Lebanon which could be used as nuke substitutes against Israel. The alliance between Sunni Arab states and Israel is also known.
Turkey: Saudis have sent 30 military officers to Turkey ahead of positioning the 04 fighter aircraft. Turkey says that it will not abide by the cease fire if its interests feel threatened.
UN: Apart from fresh UN air in Dier Ez Zor, more aid packages are being readied for other besieged areas in Syria.
Russia: Russia says it has no plan B of cease fire fails, implying that all normal ops will continue

I failed to see the need for all this drama from Saudis. They already know that they can not even face people in Yemen, then why they are going into Syria with a possible risk of facing Russians.

syrian actress raghda's message to SAA
SPREAD THE BODIES OF NUSRA FRONT AND ISIS TERRORISTS IN GARBAGE DUMPS AND IN SQUARES (ALL OVER SYRIA) SO IN THE FUTURE NO ONE WOULD SAY A DOG WAS HUNGRY DURING THE TIMES OF BASHAR ASSAD’.
-- Syrian superstar Raghda's message to the soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army.
Obama’s ‘Moderate Rebels‘ from the ‘FSA’ kidnapped Raghda’s father in Aleppo, north of Syria on March 10, 2013. He was 91 years old, he was suffering from Alzheimer. The FSA ‘Moderate Rebels’ blackmailed Raghda through Qatari al-Jazeera news channel to denounce her support to her country in exchange for him. She never thought a ‘moderate rebel’ would hurt a very elderly weak person in his situation. They proved her wrong. They torturered him until he surrendered his soul, they maimed his body and they filmed everything and sent to her promising to get to her. http://www.syrianews.cc/syrian-supersta ... arab-army/

These days there is a lot of activity in Precision Airdrop. This report makes no sense.
Wonder how unintentional it was: 21 tons delivered to the ISIS. Probably TOWs and ManPADS. 5 empty crates with non-working parachutes to bomb the starving kids. Reminds me of that picture of the Turkish mofo shown taunting starving Armenian kids with food that they could not reach, during the Genocide.

"What we have seen over the last weeks is very disturbing evidence of coordination between Syrian Kurdish forces, the Syrian regime and the Russian air force which are making us distinctly uneasy about the Kurds' role in all of this," Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond told the British Parliament.
