Satellite Images Show Progress on Pakistani n-reactor - Narayan Lakshman, The Hindu
Recent satellite imagery appears to have “clearly” revealed that Pakistan has completed the external construction of its fourth reactor building at the Khushab nuclear site, 200 km south of Islamabad, a think-tank here has reported.

According to a report by Institute for Science and International Security, which has monitored and catalogued changes at the Khushab complex using commercial satellite imagery of the site, Pakistan started the construction of the fourth reactor at the end of 2010 or early 2011.

ISIS noted that a January 2011 image showed the building early in its construction but by April 2011, the frame of the reactor building and the main reactor hall were visible.

However images from November 1, 2013 clearly show that in addition to the near-completion of the fourth reactor’s external structure, the reactor stack and four of the six auxiliary buildings also present in reactors two and three “appear complete”. Further, ISIS noted, two support buildings located immediately to the west of the reactor building were still under construction but the initial section of the cooling tower row is also visible and “appears about 30 per cent complete”.

The Khushab site is dedicated to the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons, ISIS noted, and originally it consisted of a heavy water production plant and a heavy water reactor, both of which became operational in the 1990s.

However, Pakistan initiated the construction of a second heavy water reactor between the year 2000 and 2002, a third one in 2006, and the fourth one in 2011.

The report also noted that the increased capability on this site “would allow Pakistan to build a larger number of miniaturised plutonium-based nuclear weapons in order to complement its existing arsenal of highly enriched uranium weapons”.

Recently there has been talk of Pakistan considering the use of theatre or tactical nuclear weapons as a response to any conventional military aggression from neighbours.

Meanwhile, In Pakistan, one school of thought dominating entire curriculum - Meena Menon, The Hindu
There is a strong case for revisiting Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s speech on August 11, 1947 to the first Constituent Assembly in Pakistan, the tapes of which India handed over to Pakistan Radio in September.

Some school textbooks in Pakistan have distorted with abandon the speech , according to a new study by Prof A H Nayyar titled “A Missed Opportunity: Continuing Flaws in the New Curriculum and Textbooks after Reforms.”

Jinnah had said, “You are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan …. We are all citizens and equal citizens of one state… Now I think we should keep that in front of us as our ideal and you will find that in course of time Hindus would cease to be Hindus and Muslims would cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense, because that is the personal faith of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens of the state.”

The National Curriculum 2006 relegates Jinnah’s speech to a mere call for freedom of faith, writes Prof. Nayyar in his study for the Jinnah Institute which analysed the content of 27 Urdu textbooks and 30 English textbooks from class one to ten.

Textbook writers have depicted the Quaid’s words to only mean that in the new state, religious minorities will enjoy the same rights as the majority, not telling students that the Quaid didn’t want religion to have anything to do with the state.

‘Islamic ideology’

The National Curriculum also inserted an ideological component to Pakistan’s foreign policy where none exists. {Seriously, what is Meena Menon saying ? Does she mean that Islamic ideology does not play a role in Pakistan's foreign policy ?} For instance, Pakistan Studies for class ten says “In Pakistan, ideology and foreign policy are intertwined. Pakistan is an ideological state and is based on Islamic ideology.” {These statements in textbooks are accurate indeed}

Authors have also been selective about historical facts. In describing the events of 1971, Prof. Nayyar says “Our textbooks put the entire blame on Hindus of East Pakistan, and never mention the atrocities committed by the Pakistani military and its collaborators.”

The textbooks based on the New Curriculum 2006, which came into force in 2012 due to various delays, suffers from three serious flaws, says Prof Nayyar. One, it violates the constitutional protection available to the country’s non-Muslim citizens; two, it demands a narration of ideological basis of the country and the history woven around it; and three, it adds content to the learning material that is contrary to fact.

The resulting learning is hugely problematic, he points out. These form the first step in telling non Muslims that this country is not theirs, the study says.

>>The National Curriculum also inserted an ideological component to Pakistan’s foreign policy where none exists.

She might mean to say where no "policy" exists... it is guided purely by ideology.

However, the way it is formulated it definitely looks like she is saying it inserts an ideological component when in fact there is none in the foreign policy construct - which is absolute nonsense; and if that's the case, one wonders how these people can actually hold a job down!!! Of course, I'm sure she is quite capable of yapping for hours that there is in fact "no ideological component" in Pakistan's foreign policy, or any country's foreign policy for that matter....

When it comes to hairsplitting, you know our people are second to none.

For any foreigner types lurking around BR trying to figure out how to screw us as a people and civilisation, here it is free of charge: Don't leave us without options. The minute you leave us without options, you're fu(ked, and it's certain - but give us even the tiniest of optional outs and, no matter how gag inducing and shameful it might be, we'll take it and justify to ourselves that it's the best way and we'll be happy about it too. That's how you gradually turn us into slaves. Here endeth the lesson.

BTW, we can unfortunately see that some of you have cottoned on to this :)

Re : BRF Dictionary : Why are so many words misspelled (or) a Guide to Pronunciation

I quote the following from the Guide to Pronunciation :

Is - Many words that begin with 'S' are mispronounced by Punjabis as "Is". For instance, "Iskool" instead of "School".

This is patently INCORRECT. The Pronunciations are as follows :

Normal English Speaking : While going from the School to the Station I Stopped at the Stall to buy a Special Screw Driver.

Paki Punjabi Supeaking : While going from the Suchool to the Sutation I Sutopped at the Sutall to buy a Supecial Sucrew Driver.

Paki Urdu Espeeking : While going from the Eschool to the Estation I Estopped at the Estall to buy an Especial Escrew Driver.

Trust the Powers that be will correct the relative portion of the Guide to Pronunciation.

Dozens of civilians killed in the latest Swat offensive.

Paki army launches offensive near Afghan border
Residents of Pakistan's ethnic Pashtun region of North Waziristan accused government troops on Monday of killing dozens of civilians during a military operation against Taliban insurgents
"From the first day of the attack until now 70 civilians have been killed," said a tribal elder in Mir Ali
"Some truck drivers and hotel and shop keepers were shot directly, and dozens were killed by gunships, mortars, and artillery shelling on the civilian population."
"Please tell us where is safe. The army is demolishing our homes and bazaars."
Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur said insurgents would respond by launching a full scale counter offensive on army positions if attacks against civilians did not stop on Monday.

US bill links Pakistan aid to Nato supply routes
The US Congress has passed a $552 billion defence authorisation bill for 2014, which also calls for stopping reimbursements to Pakistan if ground supply routes to Afghanistan are interrupted
The bill is now at the White House for President Barack Obama to sign it into law. The White House has already indicated that the president will sign the bill.
The bill also requires Pakistan to disrupt the conduct of cross-border attacks against US, coalition and Afghan security forces in Afghanistan, counter the threat of IEDs and not to persecute religious and ethnic minorities.

No mention of Pakistan ceasing its terror against Indian targets in the east. So one can as a matter of factedly come to the firm conclusion that US payments to Pakistan by default condone Paki Terror on all other targets (especially India).

The entire charade that TSP has been enacting since 9/11 with willful connivance of US, is to not suffer any collateral damage to its interests, i.e., its terror apparatus visa vi India, while doing US bidding. Anytime, if there is an indirect bearing on TSP's operations visa vi India by doing what US asks them to do, they maneuver to re-set the pendulum. So forget any direct necessity for TSP to curb terror against India, even indirect fall out to TSP visa vi India is being managed by USA.

Recall what many-a-RAPE and "moderate" Paki have said many times, Ayesha whatever comes to mind and I am paraphrasing, "TSP will not allow others in the region, read India, to stand on the podium of victory, while TSP suffers the fallout of GWOT". And this lament has enormous sympathy among TSP's 3.5. After all, India TSP equal equal onlee. Its not India that is an "emerging power", it is "South Asia".

SSridharJi,

Lets assume for the sake of argument that India allows foreign observers on LoC. What is TSP hoping to achieve by that? What hanky panky will they resort to, so as to get sympathy from these foreign observers? Or is it just a minute step so in a calibrated way, TSP wants its 3.5 to mediate?

CRS, several reasons. India has positively annulled the role of the UN after the 1971 Shimla agreement where both sides agreed that the J&K issue would be settled only bilaterally. The UN resolutions on J&K have become infructuous after 1972 and UNMOGIP has therefore lost all relevance. India has remained consistent in this and there is no need to dilute it at all. Besides, the UN itself, during Kofi Annan's reign, confirmed that Kashmir was not an issue any more on the UN agenda, at least orally if not by officially removing it from its agenda. We have always felt, observed and experienced that UNMOGIP has been partial towards TSP. The Korbel episode that spilled over to even his daughter Madelline Albright much later on are examples. The fear is genuine that UNMOGIP has been and will be influenced by the 3½ or even Pakistan's own charms. In general, India cannot allow a foreign organization or country to meddle with its state, notwithstanding the fact that TSP claims J&K as its own.

Energy trade: Pakistan moves closer to electricity import from India
Whats Up Doc
ISLAMABAD: At a time when the international court has allowed India to divert water from the Neelum Jhelum River for the Kishanganga Dam in Indian-controlled Kashmir, Pakistan is set to sign an initial deal for import of electricity from Delhi to overcome a crippling power crisis.Sources told The Express Tribune that the Ministry of Water and Power had sent draft of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to the Law Division for vetting, before signing it to pave the way for electricity import.“The two sides are likely to ink an MoU for electricity trade,” a source said, pointing out that this was going to happen despite the fact that Delhi had succeeded in getting a decision in its favour from the International Court of Arbitration. The court has permitted India to divert water to the Kishanganga Dam, which will hurt 900-megawatt Neelum Jhelum hydropower project being set up in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
India has offered to supply about 500MW of electricity in the beginning and this plan could be implemented within a year by laying a transmission line.A senior government official said Pakistan felt that it could import 2,000-2,500MW of power from India to tackle the acute shortage which had hit its economic growth bringing it down to 3% a year.India has also expressed interest in exporting oil, but since Pakistani refineries produce low-quality oil whereas India produces oil of Euro 2, 3 and 4 standards, they cannot press ahead with the plan.“Now, the World Bank has come up with a proposal, saying it can provide technical assistance for conducting a feasibility study of the power import programme,” an official said.

Precisely. Adding to your thoughts, I concur with the bill's stick and carrot approach. Our concern today is a safe withdrawal of men and material by a certain time frame. Therefore, this bill is a transaction-oriented one. Not a long-term goal. We will fight our battles as we deem fit. Why would we compromise one strategic value over another that offers us no gain? After Afghanistan, there will be no strategic value left in pakistan, and the pakis know this.

India has a long term strategic end result in mind; the removal of training camps and the neutralization of the terror infrastructure. In this case India will need to fight its own wars, why talk of short-term battles that someone else should fight for her?

Blasts kill three and injure eighteen in Karachi
KARACHI: Twin blasts occurred in Orangi Town No 10 area killing three persons, including a teen aged girl, and wounded 18 others whereas another explosion took place near Karachi's Numaish chorwangi on minutes before the Chehlum procession was scheduled to pass the area without causing any human casualties, DawnNews reported.

A blast in Orangi Town No 10 area of the city took place minutes after the first explosion was reported in Karachi's Numaish area.

Police sources said the explosives were planted on a pole of a signboard situated along the route of the Chehlum procession.

The explosion led to panic among the people though no injuries were reported in the incident, initial reports said.

Security personnel reached the blast sites, located several kilometres apart, and cordoned off the areas.

Karachi was declared among the various ‘sensitive’ parts of the country :rotfl: on the occasion of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain.

More than 10,000 army soldiers were working today with the civil administration in the city to maintain law and order.

Besides more than 10,000 Rangers personnel in the city, additional contingents had also been called from elsewhere in the province to remain standby.

The provincial government had already imposed a ban on pillion riding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana for Monday and Tuesday.

Moreover, cell phone services have also been suspended in 22 cities of Pakistan, including Karachi, as a security measure during the observance of Chehlum

Countrywide loadshedding to increase from today
ISLAMABAD: The government announced on Monday revival of electricity loadshedding for ‘about two hours’ per day throughout the country because of an increased gap between power generation and demand arising out of annual canal closure and diversion of gas to textile industry.
An official, however, told Dawn that loadshedding could go up to four hours on an average, but it would be kept at two hours in big cities and maximum loadshedding would be done in the rural sector and areas with lower recovery of bills. As a result, some consumers may complain of more than 10 hours of loadshedding.

After India, Dhoom 3 breaks records in Pakistan

Bollywood icon Aamir Khan’s latest release Dhoom 3 has broken box office records in Pakistan in the first week of its release, with multiplexes running five shows a day to capitalise on interest in the film.

In the country’s largest city of Karachi, Dhoom 3’s box office receipts from 56 screens on its opening day was around Rs 20 million. This easily broke the record set by the Pakistani film Waar last month for the highest box office collections on the first day of release.

"Waar grossed Rs 11.4 million on its opening day but Dhoom 3 has surpassed that by a large margin," said Nadeem Mandviwalla, one of Pakistan’s leading exhibitors and distributors.

Dhoom 3 was released at a time when the screening of Indian movies has come under a cloud because of an order from the Lahore High Court barring the exhibition of "illegally" imported films.

The Dhoom 3 craze in Karachi has reached such heights that multiplexes are running the film on all their screens and having five shows a day on one screen — something unheard of in the Pakistani film industry.

"It will be interesting to see by what margin Dhoom breaks the record for the highest box office collections in Pakistan, which is held by Chennai Express with grosses of Rs 100 million."
