Climate Change, Deforestation and Corruption Combine to Drown a Region

http://www.nytimes.com/cwire/2010/10/13 ... ss&emc=rss

From 1947 -- 33 % Forestation to 4 % in 2010

But the KEY FACTOR that they miss ...

PAKIs went from 40 Million People to 180 Million Jihadis from 1947 to 2010 --- This is in a land the size of Texas & CA combined ...

Texas -- Land Area : 695,621 KM^2
CA -- Land Area: 423,970 KM^2

Total for 2 States: 1. 119,591 KM^2 ( 1 Million, 119 Thousand+ SQ KM)

Paki Land area: 880,940 km^2

Soon they shall reach the exalted state of "desert rats" ...

From Roaches to Rat , evolution going bonker!! Paki did not gain Independence , The land and independence was granted to them from the reward earned by hard working, sacrificing Indians. Till now there hardly exist a Poak in Poakland who fought against the Brit Pit. No PoakBaccha ever went to gallows fighting against gora.

OTOH ... to give some credit where it is due ... Archan, as you know, his samadhee is in Pak (Edited later)

The Jail where he became shaheed , is a memorial (courtesy Pak government - made a few yeas ago according to blips I have seen). Few years ago they did celebrate his birth anniversary and did name a street or two in his honor..

^^^ Sorry spoke too soon and under estimated the Pakiness:
Jail where Bhagat Singh held in ruins; memorial promise unkept
The prison, where Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh was incarcerated and executed, is in a dilapidated condition with broken doors and rough flooring, a far cry from the promise made by a top lawmaker in Pakistan to build a memorial for the martyr.
Leave it to Pakis .. There are two Physics Noble prize winners born in (present day where is) Pakistan. Both are disowned by Pakis!

And this too according to report above:
The 'phansighat' (gallows) where Bhagat Singh was executed in the Kot Lakhpat Jail, has since been demolished...

Bhagat Singh's family has also demanded that the Bradlaugh Hall in Lahore be converted into a museum where his personal memorabilia confiscated by the British, be displayed. "

A Lahore court has preserved Bhagat Singh's memorabilia including 170 books he read while in jail, a letter written to his mother and some clothes. "A relative recently saw these things which are in good condition. They need to be preserved for posterity to inspire our future generations," he said.
(I have read that, at Zia's time (with his order/endorsement) many hindi/gurumuhi books were thrown in a nullah from Lahor Libraries.)

Pakistan Army Planning Assault on Al-Qaeda Terror `Epicenter,' Mullen Says
Pakistan’s army has pledged to go after militants the U.S. wants targeted in an area harboring al- Qaeda that has become “the epicenter of terrorism,” President Barack Obama’s top military adviser said.
“He’s committed to me to go into North Waziristan and to root out these terrorists as well,” Mullen, 64, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Conversations with Judy Woodruff” to be broadcast this weekend. “He clearly knows what our priorities are.

AFAIK, Bhagat Singh was from Khatkal Kalan, near Banga/Phagwara which is in Indian Punjab. I think One BRfites Juggi is from that neighborhood.

The orchestration of disturbances in the Valley is part local and part sponsored by external separatist forces (Paki/ISI).But where are the protests from the Kashmiri Pandits who have been "ethnically cleansed" from the Valley?! Their needs are also fundamental to establishing normality in the Valley.Plus the Ladakh region has its own demands as well as the Jammu part of the state."Those who live in glass houses (Kashmiri Muslims) should not throw stones".

Pakistan has to be kept out of any discussion on J&K except the date when it is going to withdraw from POK.Talks with the TSP are futile, unless there is a desire to score debating points upon the winner of this asinine "dinner diplomacy",deciding whose kebabs and biriyani was better!

Not all in J&K are Kashmiris
October 14, 2010

G Parthasarathy

Let us not forget 45 per cent of the people of Jammu & Kashmir are Dogras, Punjabis, Paharis, Bakarwals, Gujjars, Buddhists and Shias

There has been a basic flaw in New Delhi’s approach to an ‘internal dialogue’ with people in the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious State of Jammu & Kashmir. This ‘internal dialogue’ has been almost exclusively with the leadership of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference based in the Kashmir Valley. This, despite the fact that roughly 45 per cent of the people of Jammu & Kashmir are not ‘Kashmiris’ who live in the Kashmir Valley, but are Dogras, Punjabis, Paharis, Bakarwals, Gujjars, Buddhist Ladakhis and Balti Shias in Kargil.

Paradoxically, the Kashmir Valley where one now hears calls for ‘azadi’ was ruled ruthlessly for over 700 years by Mongols, Afghans, Mughals, Sikhs and Dogras before people experienced democracy and freedom under India’s Constitution. Moreover, while communal harmony has prevailed in the multi-religious Jammu and Ladakh regions, it is in the Kashmir Valley alone, which boasts of a proud history of secular ‘Kashmiriyat’, that 4,00,000 members of the minority community of Pandits have been forced to flee their homes by a Pakistan-sponsored jihad backed indirectly by the All-Party Hurriyat Conference.

The Charter of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference explicitly proclaims its aim as “the build-up of a society based on Islamic values” in keeping with “the Muslim majority character of the State”. The Hurriyat’s primary objective is described as a “struggle to secure for the people of Jammu & Kashmir the exercise of the right of self determination in accordance with the UN Charter and the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council. However, the exercise of the right of self-determination shall also include the right to independence.”

Every major outfit in the Hurriyat, which has splintered and split periodically, is associated with terrorist groups across the Line of Control, ranging from Al Umar Mujahideen, which backs the ‘moderate’ Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, to Hizb-ul Mujahideen of the ‘radical’ Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Pakistan’s military leadership in Rawalpindi decides who leads the Hurriyat Conference. Mirwaiz Umer Farooq took on the leadership when President Pervez Musharraf was daggers drawn with Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s mentor, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, the Amir of Pakistan’s Jamat-e-Islami. Now that Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is at peace with the Jamat-e-Islami, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq plays second fiddle to Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The puppets may be in the Valley, but the puppeteers are in Rawalpindi.

With the PDP emerging as a viable alternative to the National Conference as a mainstream party, both organisations have sought to match the rhetoric of the Pakistan-backed separatists by demanding a return to the position that prevailed in 1953 before the provisions of the Constitution of India were made applicable to the State. Some of our misguided ‘liberals’ advocate the conceding of ‘maximum autonomy’.

They forget that what is being asked for by a section of the people of the State, exclusively from the Valley, with little or no support from people in the Jammu and Ladakh regions, is a framework wherein the permit system for the entry of people from other parts of India into Jammu & Kashmir could be revived, the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, Election Commission and the Auditor and Comptroller-General of India will no longer extend to the State and duties could be imposed on goods imported into Jammu & Kashmir from the rest of the country.

If ‘maximum autonomy’ were to be granted, Jammu & Kashmir would become the only part of the country where the provisions of Articles 356 and 357 of the Constitution would not be applicable. The Governor would be appointed not by the Union Government but by the State Legislature. Just before the Mirza Afzal Beg-G Parthasarathi Accord was signed on November 13, 1974, Sheikh Abdullah told Mrs Indira Gandhi’s representative: “I hope I have made it clear to you that I can assume office only on the basis of the position as it existed in 1953.” Mrs Gandhi merely agreed to discuss this with Sheikh Abdullah, who assumed office soon thereafter.

The recent demonstrations in parts of the Kashmir Valley have had no resonance elsewhere in the State. They are being orchestrated to pick up momentum and reach full throttle when US President Barack Obama is in India. The salient demand has been the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, strangely espoused vigorously at a time when the Army is no longer deployed for internal security anywhere in the Valley.

The Hurriyat leaders and their mentors across the LoC know that with the Army out of the security equation, the writ of the Indian state can be challenged with impunity. The sort of autonomy being demanded by the Hurriyat is seen in Jammu and Ladakh as an instrument to achieve permanent hegemony of the Valley population and fulfil the Hurriyat’s aspirations for a “society based on Islamic values”. Any initiative to reach out to people across Jammu & Kashmir has to be based on securing a consensus in all regions of the State.

While demanding ‘azadi’ for ‘Kashmiris’, the Hurriyat has been remarkably reticent of what is happening in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Surely those demanding ‘azadi’ should be asked whether their espousal of ‘azadi’ also covers the people of Gilgit and Baltistan. The Resolution passed by the European Parliament on May 24, 2007, slams the domination of officials appointed by Islamabad in the affairs of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and notes that the 1974 PoK Constitution “forbids any political activity that is not in accordance with the doctrine of Jammu & Kashmir as part of Pakistan”.

The European Parliament Resolution further notes that while the “Gilgit- Baltistan region enjoys no form of democratic representation whatsoever”, the State of “Jammu & Kashmir (administered by India) enjoys a unique status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, granting it greater autonomy than other States of the Indian Union”. India needs to drive home these facts aggressively to people in the Kashmir Valley and to the international community, rather than being continually defensive about deliberately engineered violence.

The broad understanding reached in ‘back channel’ discussions between India and Pakistan between 2005 and 2007 reportedly envisaged an end to cross-border terrorism and involved equivalent autonomy on both sides of the LoC with it no longer being a barrier for the free movement of goods, services, investment and people. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should inform Parliament and the people of India about the contours of what transpired in these back channel discussions. Excessive secrecy on such a sensitive issue rarely serves the national interest.

All Paki gestures of going after the ungodly are just gimmicks before the "Mess-iah" visits India! I'm sure the ISI is well equipped to present a "Lollywood" farce for the benefit of the visiting occupant of the House that is White.Simultaneously, stirrings in the Vale of Kshmir will be encouraged,so that it will appear to the visiting potentate that "K" is the real problem at the root of the sub-continent's problems and not Pak,which is the root of all evil.

Pakistan foils plot to kill P.M., arrests 7 militants

MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani police said Thursday they have foiled a plot to kill the country's prime minister, foreign minister and other senior police, army and government officials by arresting a group of seven militants in central Pakistan.

Senior police official Abid Qadri said authorities learned about the plot during an initial interrogation of militants, who were arrested late Wednesday after a shootout near a village in central Pakistan.

The militants opened fire when police tried to pull the suspects' car over for a routine check, Qadri said. Nobody was wounded or killed in the shooting, but two men managed to escape, he said.

"We have averted several high-profile attacks by arresting these terrorists," he told The Associated Press.

The men are all part of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which is a banned Sunni Muslim militant group linked to both the Taliban and al-Qaeda, Qadri said. The group has been blamed for attacking minority Shiite worship places and killing Shiites across Pakistan.

Some of the suspects arrested Wednesday are believed to have taken part in last year's attack on the main Pakistani spy agency in the central city of Multan that killed 12 people, Qadri said.

He did not say how far along the men were in their alleged plot to kill Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the others.

Qadri said the suspects also had plans to attack a key dam, a bridge and military installations.

Up to our necks By Kamran Shafi
Tuesday, 12 Oct, 2010

Why, when people like I and political parties such as the PPP were foolishly celebrating Musharraf’s takeover, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan came out with a strongly worded statement against the coup against an elected government, writes Kamran Shafi. - Photo on file But do you think the fire-breathing, attitude-striking, ghairat brigade (brigades actually, for many more have sprouted in the week that the Torkham border remained closed to Nato/Isaf supplies) will ever acknowledge, even try to understand that we are in it? Pushed there by an unmoving, unmoved security establishment that cannot see beyond its nose?

These brigades, handmaidens to the establishment, and now fortified by former senior officers of yesteryear and not very fond memory when ‘President’ Ghulam Ishaq Khan (aka Mr GIK) was busy trying to undermine Benazir Bhutto’s first government, are adamant that the border crossings into Afghanistan be closed for good; that the Americans be told to get off the bus and do what they want in Afghanistan without any help from us.

This lot goes back to the anti-Soviet jihad, and puts the onus of everything that happened as a consequence on the Americans, absolving Pakistan of any blame. Blithely, shamelessly indeed, absolving themselves too, for the blame mainly rests on their once heavily epauletted shoulders.

Their brand-new mantra is what to us Pakistanis should be a quite peculiar bird: sovereignty, pulled out of the ghairat brigades’ hat after the recent (and quite stupid, may I say) Nato/Isaf attack on one of our Frontier Corps outposts killing three of our Scouts.

I say pulled out of a hat because no such condemnation was made of any infringement of our ‘sovereignty’ during, and immediately after, the dictatorship of the Commando. Here is an account by Christina Lamb in the Sunday Times (London) of Sept 14, 2008, when foreign troops actually entered and shot innocent villagers.

“It was 4am on the third day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and the villagers of Angoor Adda, a small Pakistani mountain town near the Afghan border, were lighting their stoves for breakfast before a long day of fasting. Two US helicopters supported by an AC130 Spectre gunship landed close to the shrine of a local saint. Out jumped about three dozen heavily armed marines and Navy Seals from a crack unit called Detachment One. As they emerged from the churning dust onto the rock-strewn hills, they made for a terrifying sight in their night-vision goggles.

“Within minutes the commandos had surrounded the mud-walled compound of Payo Jan Wazir, a 50-year-old woodcutter and cattle herd. They believed an Al Qaeda leader was hiding inside. According to villagers, the troops burst in, guns blazing, killing Payo Jan, six children, two women and a male relation. Among the dead were a three-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy, they said.

“Both US and British special forces have been carrying out missions inside Pakistan since March this year following an agreement in January between Bush and Pervez Musharraf, then president of Pakistan. In return, Pakistan’s military received £227m to upgrade its F-16 fighters. The deal explains why the Bush administration — and Whitehall — were so keen to keep Musharraf in office after elections in February in which the party he backed was defeated.”

There it is, then ... where was Pakistani sovereignty then, when it was bartered away for toys for the boys by Musharraf? Indeed, where was our sovereignty when Damadola was targeted repeatedly, killing many innocent women and children? And when poor ‘bloody civilians’ were killed? Is our sovereignty only invoked when people in uniform are harmed?

Sovereignty they say? If it is at all true that Tehrik-i-Taliban ‘militants’ blew up all those hundreds of tankers and containers carrying fuel and other supplies for our non-Nato allies in Afghanistan during the past week, in places as far afield as Shikarpur in Sindh; Islamabad the Beautiful; Quetta (where there was no Quetta Shura till last week according to the security establishment, mark); Nowshera cantonment; and Peshawar cantonment, then where pray, is Pakistani sovereignty? For we know, do we not, that the TTP is made up of Chechens, Uzbeks, Arabs, North Africans, even Chinese dissidents from Xinjiang? These foreigners are not abusing Pakistani sovereignty? It is not an attack on our ‘sovereignty’ when these foreigners attack the Pakistan Army, even the ISI, let alone innocent Pakistani men women and children with far more devastating effect than the Americans/Isaf/Nato?

Let me say this to the ghairat brigades: stop these half-measures and go all the way. Close the border crossings with Afghanistan and impound all of the goods and equipment and vehicles and fuel meant for Isaf/ American forces in Afghanistan in transit/still on ships waiting to be unloaded.

Tell the Americans that enough is enough: that you neither want any arms and military equipment from them, nor spares, nor coalition support funds (CSF), no nothing. Tell them that the war in Afghanistan is theirs and theirs alone and they can fight it on their own for all we care.

Let us then arm the Haqqanis and our other favoured groups to the teeth, and sic them on Afghanistan and the ISAF/Nato forces and the devil take the hindmost. Go all the way, gentlemen, and show the world how ghairatmand you are.

Let me end by putting in a plug for my old friend, Asma Jehangir, née Jillani, who is standing for the post of president of the Supreme Court Bar Association. And to express my revulsion and disgust at the way in which the name of this courageous woman is being dragged through the mud. She is being accused of having affiliated herself with the PPP when it is a known fact that Asma has never been swayed by politics and has always called a spade a spade. As a matter of fact her opponent is a card-carrying member of the Tehrik-i-Insaf.

Why, when people like I and political parties such as the PPP were foolishly celebrating Musharraf’s takeover, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan came out with a strongly worded statement against the coup against an elected government. Indeed, as we all know she was in the forefront of the movement for a free judiciary, facing police batons and tear-gas on several occasions. I wish her success — there could not be a better candidate.

Gola being lined up to play some role in the politics of pureland?
Court rejects plea seeking Pervez Musharraf's trial on treason charge
While dismissing the plea, the high court said the same matter has come up for hearing in the Supreme Court and hence any high court ruling in this regard is uncalled for.
However, the court did advise the petitioners to approach the SC.
If amreeka (or amreeka inspired forces) have any influence over courts and this is an example of the influence, then things will happen in order to ensure his safety till the time he arrives on the scene. The man will do the needful about dispensing with such irritants as one would expect. On the other hand, if HC is acting in a logical manner and SC does take up the relevant cases, it can be a premature breaking of the string for the kite.
In Jul 2009 the SC (a bench headed by the current CJ) said this
The bench made it clear that neither was it seized of any such prayer nor was it the proper forum. Besides, appeal against any ruling by a trial court holding Gen Musharraf guilty of treason would ultimately come to it.
So, the HC would not admit a case and SC bounces the ball in the direction of lower court. Equilibrium ?

Danger signals
The disaster(floods) has affected the Army and the Talibans in different ways. In the Army, the families of many soldiers have been affected. Their land holdings have been rendered unfit for cultivation for some months. The families need all the assistance they could get from the family members to put the land back to cultivation. Difficulties in obtaining leave have created pockets of unhappiness in the lower ranks of the Army. This unhappiness is directed against the senior military and political leadership. Fotunately, desertion rates and instances of unauthorised absence from duty have not gone up. At least, not yet, but they could as the soldiers face increasing pressure from the families to come home on leave to repair the flood damages to the family land holdings.
Gen.Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), who used to be viewed as the soldiers' General has lost some of his shine. His recent stoppage of logistic supplies to the NATO troops in Afghanistan in retaliation for the deaths of two para-military soldiers in a NATO helicopter raid into Pakistani border areas was an attempt to regain his shine as the soldiers’ General. The soldiers, whose families have been affected by the floods, are unhappy with him for two reasons. Firstly, for failing to attend to their problems. Secondly, for failing to force the civil administration to help their families. The Army was active in rescue missions at the height of the floods thereby winning the praise of many civilians, but its role in rehabilitation measures has been very limited. Moreover, the Army is blamed for the inadequacies of the civilian adminstration. "Musharraf would have handled the situation differently", is the comment one often comes across among the lower ranks of the Army.
Gola having support- is this one of the many factors making him think to return back at the top. :?:
This seeping unhappiness is not only likely to affect its counter-insurgency performance, but it would also add to the sympathy for the Talibans in the lower ranks, thereby possibly sowing the seeds for the Talibanisation of the Army.(it will make it easier onlee) Osama bin Laden, who has come out with an audio message on the flood situation, has sensed the jihadi opportunities in the country as a whole and in the army in particular as a result of the floods.
The impact of the floods on the jihadi organisations has been of a different character. They have stepped up the assistance for putting the rural economy back on its feet----- in the form of seeds and fertilisers and contribution of voluntary labour by their cadres and humanitarian workers to bring the damaged land holdings back under cultivation. They have allowed or even encouraged their trained jihadis to go back to their villages to help their families in coping with the situation. Hence, the drop in recruitment and in the number of terrorist attacks by these organisations since the floods. They are prepared to accept a slowing-down of their jihad in the interest of keeping up the morale of their cadres and winning more support from the rural areas.
Less IEDs may be a lull before the storm in the coming months. :(( :((
The political leadership has failed to evaluate the strategic consequences of the floods from the point of view of damage to the rural agricultural economy and the fight against extremism and terrorism. There has been very little co-ordination between the Army and the civilian administration in dealing with the situation. The likely impact of the floods on military morale has not been properly analysed and corrective action has not been taken. The Government of Pakistan and its international backers have been behaving as if all that was needed was more and more money. Financial assistance has been plenty, but this assistance has not addressed the problems of the rural families, which are the mainstay of the Army as well as the Talibans.
The result: A situation which could lead to greater instability in Pakistan and provide a more fertile soil than in the past for the spread of jihadi terrorism. An unhappy soldier class could become a new factor in Pakistan's future woes.
Surface is calm now but seething inside.

Pakistan is a pearl
US President Barack Obama was quoted recently as telling a secret meeting in the Oval Office, "We need to make clear to people that the cancer is in Pakistan."
But in the eyes of the Chinese people, Pakistan is a pearl. The Chinese people treasure the great friendship between the two countries.
Almost another 20 years had passed when I went back to Pakistan early this year, where I felt overwhelmingly that many Pakistani people love China more than Chinese love their own country 8) . Pakistan has proved to be China's closest friend and the only political and military ally to stay consistent in all weathers.
China owes its opening-up to the outside world to Pakistan.
I am always proud of the Pakistani scientists' achievements. I deeply admire Pakistani scientist and engineers for their hard work and talents in developing their country's science and technology(stolen fluoroscent green color).
:rotfl:
Because Pakistan has strong defense science and technology, China feels very safe and peaceful in its frontier regions like Xinjiang and Tibet. There will be absolutely no stability in Xinjiang and Tibet without the solid brotherhood of Pakistan.
Tibet mentioned likely due to baki trying to apply brakes on India.

The paper is a CCP owned one.

X Posted from the Oppression of Minorities in Pakistan thread.

In the Islamic Republic of Pakistan self-touted as having been created as a haven for the Muslims of the Indian Sub-Continent, the minority Shia Muslim sect are prevented by the majority Sunni Muslim sect from praying in a Islamic shrine

Appears that being a Muslim in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is no guarantee for being free from persecution if one belongs to the “wrong“ sect of Islam:
Sehwan incident
Dawn Editorial
Thursday, 14 Oct, 2010

It is a sad reflection on Pakistani society when sectarian differences and schisms begin to affect Sufi shrines, long considered bastions of tolerance and communal harmony.

The golden-domed mausoleum of Syed Usman Marwandi — better known as Lal Shahbaz Qalandar — in Sehwan had to be sealed on Tuesday to prevent a clash between two groups of devotees belonging to different sects. ……………

Tension started mounting when the brother of Sindh’s senior minister announced that a majlis would be held in the shrine’s Dhamal court. This provoked members of the Sunni community, ………………..

From this gushing (nay, oozing) article, here's another gem:
Sitting next to the doctor, I saw a copy of Reference News newspaper lying on his table. The lead story on the front page was about the Pakistani army fighting the Indian forces in what was then East Pakistan. I was particularly attracted by the stories of how the Pakistani soldiers were using China-made tanks, guns and AK 47s in their fighting. From that moment, I decided to become a journalist when I grew up.
What a defining moment for this god-fearing, honest-to-goodness journalist! Wow, he owes his career to the pakis. Please note that the brave journalist does not mention Aksai Chin. Also, the paki servile mentality to the Chinese has not changed over the years.

Pakistan arrests 7 militants, foil plot to kill PM
By KHALID TANVEER (AP) – 2 hours ago

MULTAN, Pakistan — Pakistani police arrested a group of Islamist militants plotting to kill the prime minister in a gun and suicide bomb attack at his house, officials said Thursday. The seven men also are accused of targeting other government leaders for assassination.

Militants in Pakistan have frequently attacked government officials, security officers and political leaders as part of a campaign to destabilize the U.S.-allied government and take over the state. Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack near Islamabad in 2007.

The conspiracy against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was nearly complete, police officials said.

The suspects are accused of belonging to the al-Qaida-linked group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Their plan included monitoring Gilani's movements and storming his private residence in the central city of Multan with guns and a suicide bomber, police investigator Waris Bharwana said.

"These terrorists were arrested in a timely fashion, and surely we have averted an attack on the prime minister," he said.

Authorities did not offer any evidence to back up their allegations.

Like other top officials, Gilani does not publicize his movements ahead of time and travels with extensive security.

Abid Qadri, a regional police chief, said authorities learned about the plot during an initial interrogation of the seven militants, who were arrested late Wednesday after a shootout near a village in central Pakistan.

The militants opened fire when police tried to pull their car over for a routine check, Qadri said. Nobody was wounded in the shooting, but two men managed to escape, he said.

A judge has ordered the seven suspects be held and questioned in a prison. Their next court date is Oct. 27, Bharwana said.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a banned Sunni Muslim extremist group, has been linked to the Taliban as well as al-Qaida. The group has been accused of attacking minority Shiite worship places and assaulting security forces and other targets.

Some of the suspects are believed to have taken part in an attack last year on the offices of Pakistan's main spy agency in Multan, which is in Punjab province in central Pakistan, Qadri said.

The men were also conspiring to kill Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, also a Multan native, and the minister for religious affairs, who last year survived an assassination attempt in Islamabad, Qadri said. He said the suspects also had plans to attack a dam, a bridge and military installations.

All that was part of a single but complicated plan. The first step of the plan was to shoot down a mango with a catapult, which would have had a cascading effect. The rubber broke!

Likely that this correspondent of dawn is a brf lurker and saw the discussion about Bhagat Singh  (see just a few posts before) ..
Anyway the headline caught my eye:
Can Obama ignore Bhagat Singh?

President Obama is likely to go to the Golden Temple in Amritsar next month. Different reasons are being given for the first visit by an American president to Sikhdom’s holiest shrine... Whatever the reason for his visit, Obama will be in for a surprise his hosts may not have provisioned for.

Reading that Jawed Naqvi article is like watching a Beijing contortionist. Existentialist "Pourquoi?" comes to mind after such performances. Jeez.....

Of recent, Indian leftists have jumped to the conclusion that Bhagat Singh is a commie because he threw bombs, questioned prevalent religious practices and is safely dead that he wont whoop their asses. I mean, reading Marx is not some Kalima-tut-shahada equivalent to become a commie, is it? How else is Bhagat Singh a commie? Based on his original writings, he seems more a carvaka school atheist than the types we see thumping books, worshiping in front of bearded german prophets at politburo meets and burning valuable Indian public property.

This chap seems to have been itching to write on those lines and Obama visit came along. Maybe some repressed memories against Sikhs are there too.

Make no mistake, when the time comes, #1 will be "delivered" *only* by Pakis. US can go and kill some innocent villagers and goats all in super duper mil suits and weaponry. When Mullen said Kayani knows "exactly" what US wants, that is huge giveaway - they want Kayani to move jihadis from N Waziristan before US forces go there to expend their old stock and replenish their ammunition with fresh FY11 stock.

Alright, many of us predicted it. Most of us had an inkling about it. But just a few of could see it happening so fast and so soon. Donors urged to write off $53b debt
And, the flood waters have not even dried up yet. Man, the chutzpah!
A large number of people staged a rally here on Thursday with an aim to press international donors to step forward and write off the country’s massive $53 billion debt to guarantee the Pakistani people the ‘right to life’.
speakers vowed to continue their struggle unless the international community shows seriousness towards this issue.
the debt must be cancelled
The call comes ahead of the meeting of Friends of Democratic Pakistan today (Friday) in Brussels
The legal Precedence: “The exercise of the basic rights of the people of the debtor countries to food, housing, clothing, employment, education, health services and a healthy environment cannot be subordinated to the implementation of the structural adjustment policies, growth programmes and economic reforms”.
As an example: the International Monetary Fund waived a debt of $268 million given to Haiti and after this the World Bank also eased the life of Haitians by deferring repayment of its debt for five years
And, not to be outdone with emotional hyperbole, here's the clincher of an argument to kill all further arguments:
Some countries, including France, Japan, South Korea and China — all members of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan — have received more money from Pakistan than they have given in response to the flooding. :rotfl:
it is a moral and economic absurdity that while poverty-struck people in Pakistan are struggling to put their lives back together much richer countries like France and Japan are receiving vast sums of money in debt payments
While you are at it (forgiving our debts, i.e.), we demand that you give us some drones (free, of course).

Saip,

IIRC, in 1966, the PRC entered into a contract to supply the TSPA with about 900 T55, a regiment of which was destroyed at Longawala(SP).

I am not sure bout the AK 47s though.

RAPES & RAPETTES ! Let The Games Begin !

'Rape Not Possible in Marriage'

'Rape Not Possible in Marriage'

Oct 15, 2010

LONDON : There cannot be rape within marriage, a Muslim cleric in Britain has ruled. A key Muslim leader in the country promptly denounced the views as "misguided "and "inappropriate".

"In Islamic Sharia, Rape is Adultery by Force. So Long as the Woman is his Wife, It Cannot be Termed as Rape," the Independent quoted cleric Sheikh Maulana Abu Sayeed as saying.

Men accused of raping their wives should not be prosecuted as "sex is part of marriage", said Sayeed, president of the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain.

He made the comments to the blog The Samosa — and reiterated them to the The Independent . Sayeed told the website: "Clearly there cannot be any rape within the marriage. Maybe aggression , maybe indecent activity ... Because when they got married , the understanding was that sexual intercourse was part of the marriage, so there cannot be anything against sex in marriage . "Of course, if it happened without her desire, that is no good, that is not desirable."

British law makes rape within marriage illegal.

Sayeed also suggested that women who claim to have been raped by their husbands should not immediately go to the police.

"Not in the beginning, unless we establish that it really happened . Because in most of the cases , wives... have been advised by their solicitors that one of the four reasons for which a wife can get a divorce is rape, so they are encouraged to say things like this."

Asked how men found to have raped their wives were to be punished, he said: "He may be disciplined, and he may be made to ask forgiveness. That should be enough."

Muslims4UK's chairman Inayat Bunglawala said: "Sheikh Sayeed's comments are woefully misguided and entirely inappropriate . Rape – whether within marriage or outside it – is an abominable act and is clearly against the law."

Dave Whatton, spokesman on rape for the Association of Chief Police Officers, told the daily: "We know that the Majority of Rapes do not take place through strangers attacking women late at night but between acquaintances and within marriages and partnerships."

From Howzzat:

Reading the book, it turns out that Pakistan is the world’s most important country. Hell-lowww! I could’ve told them that. The other thing Woodward says is that General Kayani is India-centric, which means that he can scent the Indians when they’re trying to be Incredible India or India Shining. Which reminds me, what would we say about Pakistan if we wanted to market it to tourists, just in case someone wants to come here ever? Possibly Pakistan? Impossibly Pakistan?

Me thinks it should be 'Porky Pakistan'
