banking strike update:
this is a normal strike update from a small district of Karnataka. what caught my attention that prompted me to give this update is that this incident will never be reported in any media. today banking union strike people were shouting against the privatization of the bank and the leader of the strike (obviously union guy with microphone) leading the strike slogans. when the whole cacophony of sloganeering went high the union guy started rising slogans against farm laws. very very few people started shouting "banking, Banking"..... then after some time the guy started rising slogans against Article 370... at this point many people started shouting "banking banking...." looking at it the union guy asked all the people not to be in group but to disperse and be united as one group. may people in the crowd shouted united for bank only...
the question one should ask is
1) what is AIBA got to do with farm laws?
2) what is AIBA got to do with Article 370?
it is good to privatize the bank but more importantly all unions should be dismantled and dissolved before selling. if not with these komis will be a nightmare for the buyer.

Congress MLA driven out of the assembly for wearing t-shirt again, violating previous instructions not to do so
https://www.deshgujarat.com/2021/03/15/ ... g-t-shirt/
Chudasama later speaking to media persons said, ‘I wear t-shirt even when on visit to my constituency area. I don’t have kurta. If my voters have accepted me in t-shirt, why I can’t come to the State assembly wearing t-shirt? It’s my constitutional right to wear and eat whatever I wish. I am being targeted wrongly.’
It’s worth noting that the Speaker is lawyer by profession. While there’s fix rule about how lawyers should dress while appearing in courts, there are no specifically mentioned, written rules regarding the dress code of MLAs.
Worth noting that the MLA’s t-shirt had ‘Free Spirit’ written over it and the color was black. The Speaker has number of times in the past asked MLAs not to wear black cloths when attending the house.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel when asked about this row, maintained that some conventions are unwritten even and they need to be followed. He gave example of parliament of England in this reference.

Thanks to Vajpayee govt atleast they got rid of some excess PSU bank staff through the VRS scheme in the late 90s else the problem would have been 10x worse. Of all the harebrained decisions Indira took taking over private enterprises and nationalizing them has to be the worst .

About VRS, i do feel sorry for some of the banking staff who voluntarily chose to retire by taking a lumpsum during VRS scheme. Many did it trusting the rupee to hold value and no one expected the rapid devaluation and inflation which was to hit India in the coming years. So many of my close family members who were working for Canara, Vijaya, Syndicate etc. took VRS thinking the money will last them a while (it was something like 5 lakhs for a grade 4 officer which was a big amount back then ), but such was the tsunami of inflation that amount did not last long and many where left looking for employment in their 50s and 60s.

While i don't think there will be any takers for some of these banks unless the government guarantees against the NPAs they carry on their books, i do think these PSU banks are a ticking timebomb which will explode someday soon. It is estimated that over 12% of the loans in PSU banks are NPAs but the real number could be much higher due to forbearance of classification of assets. As of 2018, Indian banks had Rs 10 lakh crores (or about $150 billion) in NPAs, which would have only grown since. Then there's the problem with the culture itself, in 2021 when you give your staff allowance for newspaper, food, fuel, dearness , fully paid domestic leisure trip every couple of years and over 40 paid vacation time per year, no amount of merging banks will help.

The saga for Air India divestment has been going on for awhile. How long would banks take?

Air India privatisation: Centre to invite financial bids by March-end
https://m.businesstoday.in/story/air-in ... 33604.html
The shortlisted entities might be given time till June or early July this year to furnish their financial bids, reported CNBC-TV18. After the bids are locked, the sale of Air India will take another 3-4 months to finalise after evaluation of the financial bids.
...
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in her Budget speech last month that the privatisation of Air India will be completed in 2021-22. It is crucial to meeting Centre's Rs 1.2 lakh crore disinvestment target for the next financial year. Apart from selling its 100 per cent stake in Air India and Air India Express, the government is also looking to offload its 50 per cent share in Air India Airport Services Pvt Ltd.

The Centre is also rushing to divest helicopter service company Pawan Hans, a Mini Ratna-I category PSU.

Jaishankar is among the most forthright of India's many foreign Ministers.

A lot of the others were party hacks and political weasels

Whereas, Jaishankar is a straight shooter, his words are always clean and crisp and there is no mistaking where he stands on any topic that concerns India on the international fora.

the hans especially, are aghast, at his plain speaking whenever china comes up.

they have always been used to mindless obfuscation and abject kowtowing whenever India speaks of the mighty hans.

This new EAM has literally sandbagged them, at every given opportunity

Jaishankar on global democracy downgrade: ‘Custodians can’t stomach we don’t want their approval’

Jaishankar on global democracy downgrade: ‘Custodians can’t stomach we don’t want their approval’

In its annual Freedom in the World report released on March 3, US-based NGO Freedom House downgraded India from the “free” to the “partially free” category.

S Jaishankar

DAYS AFTER reports by two international organisations criticised India over freedom and democracy, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed them for their “hypocrisy” and called them “self-appointed custodians of the world who find it very difficult to stomach that somebody in India is not looking for their approval”.

Citing the supply of Covid vaccines to more than 70 countries by India’s “nationalist” government, he asked about the contribution of “internationalist countries” in this regard.

On India-China ties, he indicated that if China extends a hand, then India will do as well — but if it points a gun, then India’s response would be similar.

Jaishankar’s unusually candid remarks came during an interview at the India Today Conclave Saturday.

On the recent reports of Freedom House and V-Dem Institute criticising India, he said, “You use the dichotomy of democracy and autocracy. You want the truthful answer — it is hypocrisy. Because you have a set of self-appointed custodians of the world, who find it very difficult to stomach that somebody in India is not looking for their approval, is not willing to play the game they want it to be played. So they invent their rules, their parameters, they pass their judgments and then make out as though this is some kind of global exercise.”

Referring to the reports, he said: “We are supposed to be the nationalist. So let’s talk nationalism. Okay, we are the nationalist guys, we have given vaccines to 70 countries in the world. So tell me, the internationalist countries, how many vaccines have they given, which one of these countries has said, while I’m doing my people, I will also do people outside who need as much as my people. So suddenly, where are these people when it comes to that. We are supposed to be, you know, shrinking civil rights because of, you know, apparently, our mindset.”

Jaishankar was referring to India’s vaccine diplomacy under which 80.75 lakh doses have already been sent free of charge and 165.24 lakh delivered under the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation — an estimated 339.67 lakh doses have been sent in commercial deals.

In its annual Freedom in the World report released on March 3, US-based NGO Freedom House downgraded India from the “free” to the “partially free” category.

Last week, Sweden-based V-Dem Institute said India is no longer an “electoral democracy” and classified the country as an “electoral autocracy” while contending that much of the decline in democratic freedoms occurred after the BJP’s victory in 2014. The independent research institute, based at the University of Gothenburg, has been publishing data-based worldwide democracy reports since 2017.

Jaishankar also took a dig at former US President Donald Trump and several Republicans for questioning the elections in the US: “Now, again, look at the politics of these places or whatever you might say, I’m in this country, nobody questions our election. Can you say that in those countries?”

Asked about his view on India-China ties, the External Affairs Minister said: “Now, obviously, when a relationship is doing well, we would respond positively. So, if you extend your hand. I’m going to extend my hand too. But if you point a gun at me, I’ll point a gun at you. I mean that’s reasonable, that’s logical.”

Jaishankar described the rise of China as a “phenomenal happening” — the rise of a potential global power after the Second World War.

“Now, we happen to be located directly next to this global power. So, when a global power rises, it will have its repercussions, it will have its ripples and we feel it directly. Now, we have problems, historical problems, boundary issues… So, the possibility of the impact of that on us is, obviously, quite significant,” he said.

“Our message to the Chinese is very clear, look we want good relations. We will be the second and third largest economies in the world, in the very near future. We would be, we are the most populous countries in the world. We are the two Asian civilizations, which are, in a sense, regaining the place in the global order. I need peace and tranquility on the border. I can’t have tension at the border. I can’t have the kind of issues I had in Galwan, and then say, well, you know, let’s carry on with business in the rest of our relationship. That’s unreal,” he said.

India and China have locked in a border standoff in eastern Ladakh for more than 10 months with disengagement having started in one of several friction points.

the hans fear the QUAD and are helpless to oppose any coalition of forces that gang up against them.

the britshits have sensed an opportunity here and are planning on moving in.

Let the QUAD remain a QUAD without any more additions. The britshits already have a base here in the region

BTW, globalization has become a dirty word and many early movers are having a quiet rethink about the concept.

It is china that seems to have benefited the most from the concept of globalization by exporting aggressively, and not always legally, to every corner of the world and built up a huge balance of trade position in its own favor

Whats next? Doctors without required biology knowledge ?
Doctors require licence to practice , not mandatory for engineers . Anyway we can debate on the quality of doctors even though they score "high" in biology .

When calculators were introduced by one private board , every one jumped to conclusion that it will destroy our math skill. Now every board allows the same.

Previously class 9, 10 and 11,12 are clubbed together for one final exam. That tradition broken by the same board and now followed up by every boards.

Diploma students get applied physics and mathematics and jump to 3rd sem of engineering after passing diploma. Well those students are par with their 12 pass counterparts .

Apart from the commie naxal strategy to infiltrate engineering colleges , maybe this new policy is not that bad. Well open for comments .

It is more efficient (time wise) to consume information via the printed/written word than listening to an audio podcast or video podcast (which is usually listening through the voice of a pretty face). Also, OTT platforms can eventually end up becoming white elephants over time. I dare say many on this forum can afford to chip in with contributions. That said, the money can be spent on more worthwhile causes.

Kudos/Congratulations on a well written and collaborated article Suraj San and Deans Saar. I never thought that an extreme stickler for stats and iron fisted forum rules could pen a dry/dark humor laden article with the same stats.

I have a feed back/suggestion/question on your article.

1. A lot of parameters in the article reference the 98-99 period of uncertainty, but the score is missing for that period ( we have scores for 1952, 1976, 2018, 2019). if that can be added as well (though you do make the reference to the number in the paragraph concerning it).

2. Why was 2018 selected? was it to show a contrast in numbers for the preceding year of the general election with 2019? and for the same thing why not display 2014/2015 instead of 2018?

thanks

There is no one responsible for India, but they still released a report on India.

From surfing their website for 10 mins, it is any body's guess why democracy is in danger in India since 2014. Dark green colour is at fault. hai allah!

The whole Vaze affair is quite strange and curious. We are to presumably believe that an experienced officer of many years service was completely unaware of the beat that he operated in. He did not know that Antila which is home to the richest person in India and protected by former SPG members would not be bristling with CcTV and other visible and invisible security devices. He then further proceeds to use a vehicle that is linked to him personally to plant gelatine sticks. The choice of gelatine is also strange. The owner of the vehicle is then subsequently killed and is someone known to Vaze. The said officer is also seen in cctv using “a PPE” store parking this vehicle.

The gelatine stocks are not detonated thus allowing for convenient gathering of evidence. The said officer also purports to confess and also is identified by fellow officers.

The above is just ridiculous and not even a kid will believe this. There is far far more to this than what meets the eye.

hogwash and whitewash are what the politicos are peddling to save their skins.

looks like the story may actually start with the dispatch of sushant singh rajput and his colleague/manager within days of a rogue polis officer being reinstated.

Our Media is at a fault, who don't do a proper investigation of the facts. They simply publish a story without putting any efforts to understand the context or doing a background check on a story. Zero effort, negative outcome. Mango people suffering continues :(

coincidences and fairy tales, or ...........

Not insinuating any connection, just noting a timeline.

June 6, 2020: Sachin Vaze gets reinstated.
[Reason: Shortage of cops due to Covid-19.]

June 8, 2020: Disha Salian dies.

June 14, 2020: Sushant Singh Rajput dies.
