Saudi forces seal off eastern Shia town: Human Rights Watch

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia's security forces have sealed off a Shia-majority town in the east of the Sunni-ruled kingdom, Human Rights Watch said Sunday, following months of unrest and clashes with police.

Saudi authorities last week said they seized control of a district of Awamiya, a town in the eastern Qatif region where protests have escalated into clashes with security forces in recent months.

HRW on Sunday said Saudi security forces had completely "surrounded and sealed off" Awamiya.

The New York-based group said that, based on comparative satellite imagery from February and August, large sections of the town had sustained extensive damage, including to civilian infrastructure.

"Saudi authorities should take immediate steps to allow people to safely return home, allow business and clinics to reopen, and compensate residents for property damage and destruction caused by security forces," HRW's Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson said.

Saudi authorities have blamed "terrorists" and drug traffickers for the recent unrest in Awamiya, where clashes between protestors and security forces since May have left civilians and police dead.

The town in Saudi Arabia's oil-rich east was also the hub of a short-lived protest movement in 2011 inspired by the Arab Spring.

One of the movement's leaders, Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr, was executed in January 2016 on a terrorism indictment.

Nimr's execution triggered more sectarian tension both across the Gulf and with Saudi Arabia's main regional rival, Shia Iran.

Saudi Arabia's minority Shiite community, which makes up an estimated 10 to 15 per cent of the country's population of 32 million, has long complained of marginalisation.

The U.S. House Votes against Studying Islamism

Politically, it is difficult to have an honest discussion about the difference between Islam, a religion with many interpretations, and radical Islamism, a totalitarian political ideology. In previous years, Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., and (now former) Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., have been criticized for remarks they made discussing this distinction, due to fear such distinctions were somehow "Islamophobic." Unfortunately, "The Islam Lobby "supported by Saudi and Gulf State money to US Think Tanks is partly responsible for that !

Unfortunately, it seems that little has changed. Last month, by a vote of 208-217, the U.S. House of Representatives voted down an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), that would require the Defense Department to conduct "strategic assessments of the use of violent or unorthodox Islamic religious doctrine to support extremist or terrorist messaging and justification." The rejection of this amendment is disappointing on its merits. A better understanding of radical Islam would enhance our national security, and the Pentagon in particular could put these insights to use.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), complained that the amendment doesn't "apply its arbitrary surveillance equally" by "includ[ing] assessments of White supremacist terrorism or terrorism committed against abortion clinics and doctors." Comparison does not make sense !

While no one is defending anti-abortion related and race-related murders, they aren't serious national security threats at the moment. There have been, at most, 11 murders in the history of the United States as the result of violent anti-abortion sentiments. Islamist Nidal Hasan killed more than that in just a few minutes in the Fort Hood Massacre, and that's just one attack. White supremacist violence is a bigger problem, as demonstrated by the Charleston church shooting. But it is diffuse, unorganized, and lacking in foreign support and connections.

It is certainly true that, historically, many sects of many religions have been exploited to justify murder and violence in pursuit of power. However, it is unsupportable to say that all religions are the same, or that all religions have equally threatening ideological trends at all points in history.

At this particular moment, in our world, as a recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies makes clear, "Islamic extremism ... dominate(s) terrorism in the world."

India and the Western World are some of its victims !

To stop their suffering, as well as the suffering of non-Muslims, radical Islamist ideology must be confronted, not covered up by political red herrings about other types of extremism.

Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, who is from the Mohammadden Terrorism Fomenting Islamic Republic of Pakistan, opines on the issue of India very rightly planning to deport Bangladeshi Mohammadden Rohingya’s who had first illegally migrated to Myanmar and thereafter illegally migrated to India, on the very valid national security grounds of safeguarding India from the threat of Mohammadden Terrorism.

Farhan Haq shows the usual “Pakiness” by making no mention that India is not bound by the principle of “non‑refoulement”, which he bandies about, as India is not a signatory of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention nor for that matter is it a signatory of the 1967 Protocol. Neither for that matter are the other parties who may have a direct interest in the matter namely Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Our Government should ignore the UN and UNHCR and promptly move to rounding up and deporting these Bangaldeshi origin Rohingya people who had illegally migrated to Myanmar and thereafter illegally migrated to India so as to nip in the bud the security threat of Mohammadden Terrorism this group represents.

Deputy Spokesman: Sure.

Question: I want to ask… India had announced that it intends to… to deport Rohingyas from Myanmar regardless of whether they're registered as UN refugees or not. It's a pretty high‑profile announcement, and I'm wondering, given António Guterres's interest in this issue, what's his statement on it?

Deputy Spokesman: Obviously, we have our concerns about the treatment of refugees. Once refugees are registered, they are not to be returned back to countries where they fear persecution. You're aware of our principles of non‑refoulement, and that's what applies in this case.

Question: And who will convey that to India given that they've said at the level of a minister that this is exactly what they intend to do?

Deputy Spokesman: Well, I believe the first point of contact will be through UNHCR [United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees]. Have a good afternoon, everyone.

Road accidents are the biggest cause of death among young people – so when any child road safety project is thrown off course, it’s hugely frustrating. The Children’s Traffic Club campaign, sponsored and funded by Transport for London, is excellent but for the cultural and religious depictions used in its story books. And, I might add, it is entirely reasonable to expect a £2m campaign to get it right. Especially one conceived in our diverse capital city. The portrayal of a pre-school female child wearing a hijab was most obviously offensive, because it is commonly accepted that Muslim women – if they choose to wear a hijab – do so in adolescence or after puberty because of the link to the growing sexuality of a woman’s body. But all the characters were lazy stereotypes. Political correctness gone awol, you might say. So, this modern Kashmiri ( from the name) Ayesha seems to have "seen the light" and now sounds the alarm !

The images were only dropped after a Muslim mother’s complaint, and an investigation by a Times journalist brought them to the attention of the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. (The last thing Sadiq Khan wants is "develop an image in the eyes of "White Londoners" is that he is pro- Islamist ) .There is a dangerous element to this that activists like Gina Khan and other women’s rights and equality campaigners are right to highlight. A minority of very vocal hardliners within Muslim communities are pushing a narrow version of what constitutes an “acceptable” Muslim woman. One who is veiled, compliant and modest in all her actions.

Sadly, gender has become a crucial battleground in the Islamic world. Women of all ages are now seen as fair targets as accusations fly over who is practising “real Islam” and who is just a “Friday Muslim”. The purity test is applied to younger and younger children. If the patriarchy can normalise the idea that even children are holders of honour and chastity, then they have won. The "battle for Malsi" being fought in the media of London, rather than discussed in Saudia or Pakiland

Cancellation of the TfL book campaign was an important decision in this continuing fight. We owe it to our daughters and sons to not let down our guard.

Media Ignores Communal Angle In Delhi Killing !

Six held for killing man over dance floor brush in W Delhi

A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death by a group of six people after his elbow accidentally brushed against one of them while they were dancing at a restobar at West Gate Mall in West Delhi's Rajouri Garden area on Sunday night. According to police, 25-year-old Sajjan Singh was stabbed more than six times by the accused. With the help of CCTV cameras inside the mall, the accused were arrested, police said on Monday. Sajjan worked as a driver in the Vigyan Bhavan and is survived by his mother and a brother.

Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) said, "Six accused people identified as Saleem, main accused, Imran, Aleem, Abid, Samar and a juvenile were arrested on Monday evening. They all are residents of Khyala area.”

On Sunday night, at around 8 pm, Sajjan Singh, a resident of Moti Bagh area along with his group of ten friends had gone for clubbing at the Toast Bar and Grill in West Gate Mall. While dancing, Sajjan's elbow accidentally brushed against Imran. This infuriated Imran so much that he pushed Sajjan on the dance floor. This led to a heated verbal altercation. Enraged Imran called in his brother Saleem. He along with Imran, Aleem and Abid called in their friends and they stabbed Sajjan in full public view. Where was discotheque "bouncers/ security"

A senior investigator said, "One of the friends of the victim told us that the time of the incident when verbal altercation spiraled out of control, Sajjan allegedly started begging Saleem and his friends to resolve the matter amicably. However, Saleem did not pay heed and kept on stabbing Sajjan till he lost consciousness.After killing, Saleem and his friends fled from the spot. Whether the accused were drunk or not is yet to ascertained, said the DCP. Meanwhile, body of the victim Sajjan has been sent for post-mortem and was handed over to his family.Talking to The Pioneer, Babul, Sajjan's brother said, "Three men killed my brother. All this happened right in front of Sajjan's friends. It was only at 9.30 pm that one of Sajjan's friends called in to inform that my brother has been stabbed."

The leader of Australia’s rightwing One Nation party has been rebuked by the Turnbull government for entering the Senate chamber wearing a black burqa: reported The Guardian.Pauline Hanson caused a commotion by arriving at the Senate chamber for the daily question time session dressed in a black burqa, which was designed to underscore a call she intended to make to ban the religious garment, citing national security concerns. But Hanson was rebuked sharply for her behaviour.

The leader of the government in the Senate, the attorney general George Brandis, told the One Nation leader the ruling Coalition had no intention of banning the burqa. In remarks that secured him a standing ovation from the opposition Labor party, and the Greens party, as well as other crossbench senators, Brandis warned Hanson against indulging in behaviour that Muslim Australians would find offensive. The Burqa should be banned until such time that the Saudis are forced to build other religious places of worship in their country. And Non-Muslims are allowed entry into Mecca

“Senator Hanson, no, we will not be banning the burqa,” Brandis told the Senate on Thursday. “Senator Hanson, I’m not going to pretend to ignore the stunt that you have tried to pull today by arriving in the chamber dressed in a burqa when we all know you are not an adherent of the Islamic faith.“I would caution you and counsel you, Senator Hanson, with respect, to be very very careful of the offence you may do to the religious sensibilities of other Australians.” " Political correctness" to the nth degree !

Hanson’s call for the banning of the burqa prompted disorderly interjections from across the chamber.

The Labor senator Sam Dastyari, who is of Iranian heritage, and a non-practising Muslim, shouted that Hanson was a threat to national security, and a “disgrace”. Another Labor MP interjected that Hanson would next enter the chamber wearing a white hood – a reference to white supremacist groups. Hanson later took to Facebook to double down on her behaviour in the parliament. Hanson’s One Nation party proposes anti-Islamic policies including a ban on Muslim immigration, and a royal commission into Islam. Hanson has also called for a Trump-style travel ban on Muslims entering Australia.

Omani sheikh lured 16-year-old girl with videos of Burj Khalifa, malls, says police

Videos of the Burj Khalifa hotel, glitzy shopping malls in Muscat and Dubai, and luxurious villas owned by him were used by 65-year-old Omani Sheikh M Ahmad to lure a 16-year-old girl from Falaknuma in Hyderabad into “marrying” him, police investigation has revealed.

The girl’s aunt and her husband also showed her similar videos to convince her to marry the sheikh in order to enjoy a luxurious life, the police said. But they reportedly did not tell her that they were actually selling her for Rs 5 lakh.

Officials at Falaknuma police station are trying to establish contact with the girl, who recently called her mother and pleaded to be rescued from the sheikh, who was allegedly mistreating her.

Additional Inspector of Falaknuma police station T Murali Krishna said that until the qazi who performed the marriage was arrested they would not know when and where the marriage took place. “The marriage took place during Ramzan, but we do not know the exact date. The girl’s mother is also not sure. The girl’s uncle is absconding, and her aunt is in Muscat,’’ he said.

ccording to the investigation, the girl and her younger brother were living in poverty and were largely depended on their aunt. Their father is a daily wager while their mother stays at home. The girl attended a government school near her aunt’s residence — where the siblings used to spend a lot of time.In May, the aunt reportedly spoke about a marriage proposal from a rich Omani sheikh for the teenager, but her mother rejected it saying she was only 16. However, during Ramzan, the aunt and uncle allegedly secretly organised the marriage at a lodge in Chandrayangutta area here.

After spending four days with her, the sheikh reportedly dropped the girl back at her aunt’s house and asked them to arrange for a passport. He returned to Muscat and sent her a visa, the police said.

“The aunt and uncle contacted an agent who arranged for her Aadhaar card and passport. In July, the aunt and the girl flew to Muscat and went to the sheikh’s house, where they are now living,’’ an official said. The police are also trying to ascertain the relationship between the sheikh and the aunt. The "poor" girl has probably become another "plaything" in the hands of the lecherous Sheikh

When the girl’s mother spoke to the sheikh, he reportedly told her that he had paid Rs 5 lakh to the uncle and aunt and that he would release her only if the money was returned. The police are now looking for the uncle and an agent named Mohammed Haji, who are absconding.
South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana said all those who were involved in getting the minor married would be booked under non-bailable offences.

With Finnish Police disclosing that the prepetrator of the Turku knife attack on the Mohammadden Sabbath of Friday that killed two women is from overwhelmingly Mohammadden majority Morocco and that they are treating the incident as as “murder and attempted murder with a terrorist intent”, it appears to be near certain that the attacker will be an adherent of Mohammaddenism and this incident is thus well on track to be yet another act of Mohammadden Terorism that is plaguing the World.

And so it comes to pass that Mohammaddens "involved in the asylum seeking process" contribute to the “first suspected terrorist attack in Finland” :

Finnish police: Main suspect in Turku attack is 18-year-old Moroccan

Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed on Saturday that the previous day's knife attack in Turku is being investigated as murder and attempted murder with a terrorist intent.

The main suspect is an 18-year-old Moroccan man. He remains hospitalised in critical condition after being shot in the hip by police.

Police have also released more information about the victims. The two were killed were Finnish citizens. The eight injured include one Swede, one Briton and one Italian citizen. One of the wounded is under age 18.

Four patients may be released on Saturday

Three people remain in intensive care, including the suspected assailant.

One of the injured has been released from Turku University Hospital (TYKS), and four more may be discharged on Saturday.

Police took four other individuals into custody overnight. They are being interviewed on Saturday.

The NBI provided more details at a press conference on Saturday afternoon.

NBI said that the three foreigners injured in Turku were from Britain, Sweden and Italy, rather than just Sweden and Italy as they previously said. The Italian is a 30-year-old woman, a university researcher who has lived in Turku for a few years. She was stabbed in the shoulder, but not seriously injured.

When police confronted the attacker, he ignored a verbal order and was then immobilised with a single shot to the leg. The assailant was given first aid and taken into custody.

Suspect was "involved in the asylum seeking process"

The man is a Moroccan, as are four other detainees. The main suspect has so far been unwilling to speak to police, who plan to try again later on Saturday.

Both of those killed were women. The injured include six women and two men. The men had tried to intervene. Police believe the attacker apparently specifically targeted women, but otherwise chose his victims at random.

Some of the victims have serious injuries, but none are considered life-threatening. The victims ranged in age from 15 to 67.

The Jehovah's Witnesses said on their website that one of their members had been killed.

The four others were detained in Turku at one or more private homes and at an asylum-seekers' reception centre. An international warrant has been issued for a fifth Moroccan.

A van belonging to one of the suspects has been seized, but police could not say how or whether the vehicle was directly involved in the attack.

Police say the main suspect arrived in Finland early last year and was "involved in the asylum seeking process" - but say they cannot provide further details.

International links unclear

The suspected attacker was living at a reception centre for asylum seekers in Turku.

The NBI believes that the attack was planned in advance to some degree, but declined to speculate on how organised it was, or any possible links to international groups.

The Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo) later on Saturday afternoon called this the first suspected terrorist attack in Finland, but added that the overall risk level in the country has not significantly changed.

Europol is looking into whether there were any possible connections between the Turku incident and two deadly terror attacks in Spain on Thursday and Friday. Some of the suspects in those attacks are or were Moroccan men of around the same age as the Turku suspect.

Terror revisited Spain with tragic results last week as a bunch of madmen ran amok in the heart of Barcelona killing half-a-dozen people and injuring many more. The scale of the terror and destruction bears little resemblance to the carnage visited upon another Spanish city thirteen years ago but that does not make it any less criminal and cowardly.

In 2004, as the attention of much of Spain was focused on the general election a few days away, serial bomb blasts ripped through the heart of Madrid’s commuter train system in morning rush hour killing nearly 200 people. The attacks ignited public anger, unseated the centre-right government in the elections that immediately followed and led to the exit of Spanish troops from Iraq.

In terms of scale, devastation and implications for Spain’s relationship with its important partners, the Madrid attacks were a terrible, unforgettable tragedy. It seemed to reinforce the view that Western aggression was the root of cause of Muslim anger with transgressions like the Iraq war (Spain initially sent troops) only fanning the flames of Al-Qaeda-style radicalism.

Conservatives, academics and researchers who believed otherwise, who believed that this rise of Islamic fundamentalism/terrorism had nothing to do with justice but was instead, an attempt to seek global domination for one demented worldview with its roots in Salafism, a belief in return to the Caliphate and a contempt for other religions, were unfortunately on the backfoot. Events thereafter appear to prove this Leftist worldview.

George W Bush’s muscular war on terror foundered due to inept handling and a lost campaign in Iraq; Barack Obama’s ascendancy and Cairo speech of 2009 seemed to suggest that the US would deemphasise combat as a way to counter the spread of Salafism/fundamentalism. In India, the setbacks to the BJP and the ascendancy of the Congress/Left style of politics dealt a blow to the belief that the vile terrorist ideology can be countered by aggressive policing at home and a no-nonsense approach towards truculent neigh neighbours.

Appeasement, lackadaisical approach and the bogey of ‘Hindu terror’ were the ‘weapons’ in Congress-UPA government’s arsenal against Islamic terror! Scale and destruction apart, there is one more crucial difference in the response to the Barcelona attack. And that difference is important because it just shows how the liberal/Leftist worldview on Islamic terror has changed dramatically in light of the Islamist terror rampage across countries. Madrid was Spain’s fault, Aznar (former Spain PM, Jose Maria Aznar) fault just like 9/11, which was blamed on everything from CIA activities to American troops in Saudi Arabia and support for Israel.

In India, this manifested itself in a ‘hate-Modi’ campaign which looked at every terrorist attack on home soil through the prism of Gujarat. Attempt was made to link every atrocity to what happened in Gujarat so as to suggest that somehow that Narendra Modi was responsible for all the tragedies. The bottom started falling out of this insidious campaign when the terrorists refused to play ball. Far from being freedom fighters interested only in Kashmir/Palestine liberation, they showed their true colours with the rise of ISIS and the campaign of terror unleashed on the heart of Europe. For liberals, it was a painful decision.

Difficult to blame western imperialism when innocent Germans, Belgians and Spaniards are being slaughtered. Difficult also to blame ISIS atrocities on Iraq war when France, which had nothing to do with it, is attacked. The silence on Barcelona from the usual ‘blame-the-west’ gang exemplifies this confusion. The latest liberal smear effort is to equate the thugs of Charlottesville with terrorist scumbags of ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Make no mistake, there is a lot of difference between ISIS and the white nationalist/supremacist gangs or groups in the US. The former is a disaster for civilisation as we know it.

The latter are a localised danger to parts of American society if allowed to grow and become big, especially with their vile, racist rhetoric. That’s it. They are not a national or an international security threat on the scale of ISIS. A similar effort is underway in India to link fringe Hindu groups with Taliban in Afghanistan. There is an even more sinister effort to paint Hindu/Indian society as intolerant and anti-Muslim and out to deny minority rights.

Recent articles in international publications point to a larger effort in this direction. India we are told is seeing aggressive Hindutva, rising Hindu intolerance. This will be used at next available opportunity to smear Indian society, to wash off the sins of Islamic radical preachers and extremists and whitewash the depredations of Islamic terrorists from across the border.

We have seen this movie before and know how it is going to play out. Liberals in India and the west are no different when it comes to smear tactics or acting as apologists for Islamic terror.

They know the real villain is Islamic terrorism. But much like their forefathers who whitewashed the sins of Soviet communism in the name of the fight of justice or equality, the modern day liberals and Leftists in the west and India will cry ‘wolf ’ at non-existent threats from white nationalist groups in the US and or allegedly militant Hindus in India to hide the real problem of Islamic fundamentalism. The game has just begun.

The Hualong Hui Autonomous County in Northwest China's Qinghai Province has removed over 1,000 loudspeakers from mosques to eliminate noise pollution, according to a report by local newspaper Haidong Times. Loudspeakers were removed from 355 mosques within three days recently in the county with a large Muslim population which is under Haidong city, according to a Friday report that was later deleted. A screen grab of the report is still circulated online.

The report said the Hualong government has organized various departments and institutions including the Islamic Association to tackle noise pollution caused by numerous local mosques. Environmental protection inspectors from the central government to Haidong received complaints from residents about noise pollution from loudspeakers of mosques this year. Haidong's Ledu district government published the inspectors' orders on their website this month, including a case of noise pollution from a mosque in Nianbo town, especially during nighttime.
Complaints about noise pollution from mosques are common in Northwest China where mosques have mushroomed in recent years. Residents living near mosques complain that the Islamic calls to prayer wake them up in the early morning, and in some cases aggravate heart conditions of some patients. The environmental protection authorities usually step in and solve the problem. The Mullah of Pakistan should be made aware of this discriminatory edict announced by the atheistic Chinese and pressure the Islamic Govt sitting in Islamabad to take up this matter .

The removal of loudspeakers in Hualong has apparently met with discontent online from some Muslims who complained the move shows intolerance, but most online users cheered the solution to noise pollution and encouraged other local governments to do the same.

Loudspeakers at Mosques' minarets have caused controversy in many countries, including Muslim countries. In 2012, Vice President Boediono of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, called on mosques to tone down their noise after widespread complaints, AFP reported. Saudi Arabia banned mosque loudspeakers for special night prayers during Ramadan in 2012, according to the Arab News. In India, Mumbai's high court in 2014 directed the police to remove loudspeakers from mosques that had not obtained required permissions from the authorities. The loudspeakers of mosques have also caused tensions in the US and Germany. This may well be true pertaining to loudspeakers, but the Chinese have gone much further than just banning loudspeakers . They are using every heavy handed way to curb the practice of Malsi.

BEIJING: Muslims living in China’s far western region of Xinjiang are the happiest in the world and people should not believe the lies spread by extremists and their Western supporters, a senior official wrote on Friday in an unusually strongly worded piece.

Writing in the official Xinjiang Daily, the region’s deputy foreign publicity director, Ailiti Saliyev, said Xinjiang was stable, harmonious, prosperous, open and modern.

Visitors see this for themselves when they visit, subverting the impression created in Western media of the opposite, he added.

“Many people say from the bottom of their heart: ’The happiest Muslims in the world live in Xinjiang’,” he wrote.

The problem stems from the “evil collusion” between extremists and “hostile Western forces”, the official added, without offering any names.

“They coordinate with hostile Western forces to wantonly spread rumors, misrepresent, vilify and besmirch Xinjiang in the overseas media,” he added.

Extremists unfairly accuse the government of trying to annihilate the Uighur language and culture with development projects and promotion of bilingual education and of seeking to ban religion with measures to ensure people’s safety, he said.

They also laud criminal elements as “warriors resisting the oppression of the Han Chinese government” and “the mother of the Uighurs”, the official added, a reference to Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer, once a successful businesswoman who now lives in exile in the United States.

Groups overseas who claim to speak for Uighurs are nothing more than "running dogs and pawns" of the same hostile Western forces, the official said, adding his mission as a Uighur himself is to tell the real facts about Xinjiang to the world.

"Xinjiang's image will brook no distortion," he wrote.

While foreign reporters can easily visit Xinjiang, unlike Tibet which requires special permission, the government keeps a close watch on their movements, making interference-free reporting hard.

KOLKATA: With Muharram scheduled a day after Dussera this year, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asked the people to cooperate with each other and not to fall prey to provocation leading to communal problems.

"Some quarters may try to instigate people to flare up communal tension and there are people who may try to take political advantage of this", Banerjee said while addressing a meeting of Durga Puja committees on Wednesday evening.

She asked, "Why should we take the blame because of some people who are trying to take political advantage?,"

Banerjee directed SPs in the districts to talk to Durga Puja committees and Muharram committees regarding holding of their rallies, and said that there would not be any idol immersion on October 1, on the scheduled day of Muharram.

"We will request all puja organizers not to hold immersions after 6pm on Dashami, September 30. No immersions will be allowed on October 1. As a concession, we will allow immersions till October 4. The Red Road carnival will be held on October 3," Mamata said on Wednesday.

The chief minister also asked the people not to pay heed to posts on social networking sites leading to communal disturbances.

"It is the latest trend. People are posting fake photos of incidents on social networking sites. People must be very cautious about this and remember that cyber crime is also a crime," she said.

Stressing that the administration would not let anybody disturb the secular atmosphere of the state, Banerjee said that police would take action in such cases.

"Muharram is not a festival we must keep that in mind. It's our responsibility. I have heard that some people have plans to disturb and drive people in a wrong path," she said stressing that the puja committees should play a "bigger role" in this context.

Detect and deport illegal immigrants, states told

NEW DELHI: Asserting that illegal immigrants like Rohingyas pose grave security concerns and infringe on the rights of Indian citizens, the Centre has written to states, asking them to detect and deport them.

In a communication to states on August 8, the home ministry said, "These illegal immigrants not only infringe on the rights of Indian citizens but also pose grave security challenges." It says the rise of terrorism in last few decades has become a serious concern for most nations as illegal migrants are more vulnerable to getting recruited by terrorist organisations.

Infiltration of (the Rohingyas) from Rakhine state of Myanmar into Indian Territory, especially in recent years, besides being burden on the limited resources of the country also aggravates security challenges posed to India, it said.

The MHA said: "Due to a variety of reasons, including political and economic turmoil in neighbouring countries, people from such countries often enter India. There are cultural and ethnic similarities, on many occasions such migration goes unnoticed and they settle in Indian territory."

The ministry has asked the state governments to set up a task force at the district level to identify and deport illegal immigrants.

The intelligence agencies have often expressed concern over a large number of Rohingyas crossing over to India as they feel that terror organisations in J&K and other parts may use them against India.

Similarly, LeT bomb-maker Abdul Karim Tunda had disclosed after his arrest in 2013 that he was trying to recruit Rohingya Muslims. Pakistan-based LeT chief Hafiz Saeed has often spoken in support of Rohingyas.

Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju said in Parliament last week that, according to available data, more than 14,000 Rohingyas, registered with the UNHCR, are presently staying in India.

Do you think she might humbly suggest that these are the sorts of ideas he should be going in for? You know, nudge him back in the radical direction a bit. The justice system certainly thought so. They’re the ones who put the condition on Omar in the first place, saying he couldn’t communicate with his mother or sister without supervision.
Khadr says that’s nothing to worry about now: “Regardless of what Zaynab may have said in a documentary many years ago (where she spoke approvingly of 9/11), there is no danger whatsoever of somebody somehow corrupting Omar into becoming a bad person,” Nathan Whitling, Khadr’s lawyer, told media on Monday.

Huh. Because it’s not like Khadr’s ever denounced his family’s views. Or the fact Zaynab hosted Osama bin Laden at one of her weddings. Or how she showed support for the Toronto 18 terrorists.A key argument from Omar’s defenders over the years has been that we shouldn’t blame him, but his family who radicalized him.

Zaynab was an adult in 2002 when Khadr was captured and killed an American army medic. The brainwashed child soldier excuse isn’t available to her. She knew what she and her family were up to back then. And, judging by her social media posts, she's still not exactly a shining example of liberal values.You’d think someone would have told her about the proposed bail changes and she’d have had the common sense to keep quiet on the extreme rhetoric for a bit.Looks like she’s just that committed to it. The courts were clearly on to something when they came up with this condition in the first place.

Nearly two million people traveled to the holy site of Mecca this week for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. It’s a rite required of every adult Muslim at least once in their lives.The event is incredibly sacred, but that hasn’t stopped politics from getting in the way. The host country of Saudi Arabia is in an ongoing diplomatic dispute with neighboring Qatar and, according to the Qatari government, the dispute has prevented many of their citizens from making the pilgrimage this year.

Tajikistan bans women from wearing veils

DUSHANBE: Legislation requiring people to "stick to traditional national clothes and culture" has been introduced in Tajikistan - a move widely interpreted as an attempt to stop women from wearing Islamic clothing.Women in the central Asian country traditionally wear a scarf tied behind the head, rather than a hijab, which wraps under the chin. Despite being a majority Muslim country, Tajikistan's minister of culture, Shamsiddin Orumbekzoda, told Radio Free Europe. The former Central Asian Soviet States, IMO, have rejected the Saudi Islam model !

Under existing laws, women wearing hijabs are already banned from entering the country's government offices. At the beginning of August, officials approached more than 8,000 women wearing hijabs in the capital of Dushanbe and ordered them to wear their scarves in the Tajik style. The new legislation does not introduce a penalty for breaking the rule, but some have claimed that fines could be introduced at a later date.

A "Note Of Caution" For Those Who Still Insist On Going To Saudi Arabia For A Maid's Job !

It was not an easy decision for Monowara (not her real name) to fly off to Saudi Arabia. She had to leave behind a 17-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son at a village in Dohar upazila of Dhaka district. The daughter had to be married off soon and the son had to undergo surgery to recover from speech impairment. The costs could not be met with the income of Monowara’s husband Abdul Baten, a betel leaf vendor.She came to know about two brokers – Hashem and Kashem – and visited them at an office in the Hemayetpur area of Savar upazila. The two brothers arranged an overseas job for her eight months ago. They assured her they would arrange the job without her needing to seek the help of any recruiting agency.

She was cautioned by her uncle Shahid, who was staying in Saudi Arabia at that time, not to go to that country, saying it might lead to very bad consequences, but the hardship at home was too much to endure.

On February 16, she landed at King Fahad International Airport in Dammam. A man was waiting there to receive her. He took her directly to a house in that city.There were 12 members in that family. Monowara thought she was doing a housemaid’s job on monthly payment. It was only when she demanded her salary after one-and-a-half months that the matriarch of the family, Nawal, told her that they had actually bought her.

There must be some mechanism in place to put a stop to this "modern day slave trade" ( Slavery was officially abolished in Saudia in 1962!)

Facing her protests, the employer paid her 1,000 riyal and took her to an office in Dammam. She was not acquainted to anyone in that office, but they arranged another job as housemaid for her in Hafar-al-Batin city. Her new employers, a family of seven, used to call her names. One week into her stay there, they started torturing her physically. As Monowara refused to go on working there, her employers left her at the same office in Dammam, but without any payment. So she was transferred from "job" to the other !

Monowara cannot recall the name of the office or any of the officials except that of Adi, who is a man of Saudi origin.Adi took her to the house of one of his relatives. But she refused to stay there and requested Adi to arrange for her return to Bangladesh. She could not contact anyone else as she had already lost her mobile phone.But Adi was not going to let her go anywhere else. He detained her there for 10-15 days. He used to threaten her showing a knife. And Saudi Arabia is a member of the UN Human Rights Council !!!

She made two attempts to escape from that house, but each time she ended up returning to the same house. After her first escape, Monowara went to the nearby police station. Adi arrived at that police station and took her to that house again, promising to arrange for her return to Bangladesh.But she faced similar treatment as before and fled for the second time. This time, she had to spend 15 days in police custody only to be handed over to Adi again.Adi took her to a faraway location and sold her to another man of Saudi origin. Her new captor detained her in a house in a desert area for 10-15 days before sending her to a family house. So, obviously, this Adi is some sort of an influential person . !

After two days at that house, she managed to run away again and went to a local police station. The law enforcers took her fingerprint and sent her to a detention centre. Monowara found others like her in the detention centre.
Fortunately, officials of Ain o Salish Kendro (ASK) were able to trace her at the detention centre with the assistance of officials of the Bangladesh mission in Saudi Arabia.At last, Monowara found a return ticket with the help of the government officials. She reached Dhaka around 4:30pm last Friday.

Pointing to Monowara’s sad tale, Ain o Salish Kendra Executive Director Sheepa Hafiza said most of the female migrant workers fall prey to unregistered brokers, although there is a government-to-government system in effect for the job offers in Saudi Arabia.
“In our study, it was found out that 76% of the overseas jobseekers go through brokers. But neither the government, nor the recruiting agencies acknowledge the existence of the brokers,” she said.Ain o Salish Kendra has long been demanding that the government changes its attitude of denying the existence of brokers and rather give them formal recognition so that the ones involved in fraud can be detected, added Sheepa Hafiza. Doubt that the Bangladesh Govt would take this up officially with the Saudi Govt !!!
