India-Australia News and Discussion
Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
Friends, the game has onl;y just begun. With India's emergence on the international scene as a major economic and military power, alarm bells rang in the corridors of power of ceratin countries who did their best to destroy independent India by first partitioning it and then using Pak (and a willing China ) as a proxy to keep India off balance. With Indian companies acquiring plum western companies abroad, plus a growing number of Indians travelling, working and studying,we have become targets for obvious reasons not just from the loutish hooligans in those countries but also from a concerted plan to teach us a lesson. The happenings in Oz must be seen in context to those that already took place in other western countries over the last few years.
Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
I completely second that. These incidents prove Oz's are least tolerant when comes to shifting of power. Like Indians are already testing Oz nerve whilst working in call centre's both here and in desh...There are reports of police using excessive power after many students didnt cleared the intersection before dawn perhaps. As per reports few were punched on their faces and causing injury. Incidentally, there were good number of students from western cultures who joined this rally(???), with possibly their own agenda. Kevin Rudd today said in parliament that Oz wants better, stronger relation with India adressing Mr Singh.Philip wrote:Friends, the game has onl;y just begun.
So many things are going on but I believe only SBS had shown all these stories so far as headlines. Channel 7 news didnt even utter a word on this. No wonder with such disparity in media coverage there are people around asking, What is this rally for?

Another attack!

Coming to think of it, people going to Oz to study, it would be a good idea that OZ spends some money in educating normal Aussies away from a culture of aggression.

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
I am usually a lurker, but could not stop myself from logging in and posting. The premise of the argument that there are certain crimes that are halal and others non-halal is intellectual stupidity at best and more likely unabashed racism. It is tragically funny to see a tag classifying the violent attack as being halal (opportunistic) or non-halal (racist). The sad part is there are many educated Indians who buy this BS. It will not be long before we start hearing about people getting killed on railway tracks and road accidents in India being 1000000000 times more than the hate victims in Australia.
The Aussies should understand that it is their loss to have a society degenerate in this manner in the long term. I cannot wait for Prafool to come and go through ethical contortions to justify how the Indian victims and India is to blame for all this

Extremely good observation. The fact that there are assaults for whatsoever reason should not be dismissed as 'halal'/ opportunistic; non-halal/ racist. The act itself is appalling. The cult of aggression has to be tackled through education as i mentioned in my last post. I think India must popularize Maharbharat and Ramayana in Australia to promote non aggression and dharmic tendencies. These will alter the way Aussies view aggressiveness. Aggressiveness as depicted in these epics is a last resort option. There is dharma behind agression and Dharma in non-aggression. There is a distinction Aussies will realize only when their kids grow up on these epics. Indian lobbies must root for introducing these texts for Kids in Australia to counter violence in their society.

Quite simply, when you protest you have a time limitation when you have been given authorisation, they went beyond the time limit and in pure G20 style the protesters were hand picked and dragged away to break the rest of the group(they all ran into a flinders st station like a stampede).
Western Students in the rally ...the socialist alternative or often referred to as trots(after trotsky),they practically turn out to any anti govt rally with their red flags.A few were from the National Union of Students merely for the sake of it.
Neither 7 or channel 9 reported this in fact 'The Australian' still has not carried a front page story since the last 5 days.
BTW did you know that Julia Gillard the education minister and deputy PM was instrumental in shutting down the International Student Dept in the erstwhile Australian Union of Students,,since they were availing free education under the bologna plan prior to 1991.

The government should just ban any advertisements by OZ Universities in the future, and issue a travel advisory while we're at it. Why do these good for nothing, third rate, impotent countries think that just being white gives them a right to have a say on everything? Goes for Britainistan too.
Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
Typical Turnbullshit.
The bulk of the aussie population has sprung from the dregs of british society. Australia was a penal colony of britain, convicts and such unacceptables from england were sent here for penal servitude.
Racism is most prevalent in the lower socio economic strata. Its their jobs and livelihood that are directly threatened by the arrival of immigrants who usually compete for jobs like those of security guards and taxi drivers, mechanics, bricklayers and whatnot. Hence the aggression.
Racism and resentment of outsiders is genetically hard coded in this society.
The aussies are wriggling like a hooked fish and trying to keep this aspect of their culture from being scrutinized too closely.

January 26, 1788
The first 736 convicts banished from England to Australia land in Botany Bay. Over the next 60 years, approximately 50,000 criminals were transported from Great Britain to the "land down under," in one of the strangest episodes in criminal-justice history.
The accepted wisdom of the upper and ruling classes in 18th century England was that criminals were inherently defective. Thus, they could not be rehabilitated and simply required separation from the genetically pure and law-abiding citizens. Accordingly, lawbreakers had to be either killed or exiled, since prisons were too expensive. With the American victory in the Revolutionary War, transgressors could no longer be shipped off across the Atlantic, and the English looked for a colony in the other direction.

BTW, will PM use this opportunity to atleast re-ask what GoI has asked before when he is being directly re-assured by Oz PM today! Or GoI and MEA has already went to slumber phase.

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
With nuclear blackmail occuring brazenly to out North and West, India and a significant section of the population is feeling very helpless. These attacks on Indians could'nt have come at a worse time. India citizens must learn that come what may, to get justice one must pull strings. There is the WKK tendency to play things lightly and frivolously when the going gets tough for someone who has to pay for it. How is it possible that the GOI is ready for talks when Pakistan is freeing JuD activists and leaders in droves..What sort of ideology prompts inaction against such crimes? The ideology that drives it is weak and criminal. This is exactly what Krishna told Arjuna and what he meant..If a neighbour comes and slaps a member of your family in your house and walks away, you won't expect your family members to slap your neighbours back, smile and say oh alls Ok. This is exactly what the present Govt is doing. I can agree that reckless war mongering must be avoided due to nuclear blackmail, but how difficult is it to say that if such attacks continue then there are going to be NO talks. Period. We even haven't removed MFN status for Paki's! Now we have a liberal elite that will again WKK style brush up any unease with the Austrailian Govt..and nothing will happen. Australia needs to change and deal with aggressiveness in their society and realize this is not helping their image one bit.
Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
HarbansJi, do you really believe that Aussies give a rat's behind for their image? The west and westerners are so profoundly self-confident as a people, and with good reason, that their pitfalls and faults can be causually brushed aside as "un Australian" or "un American" or whatever, and they can start talking about human rights in East Timor, or Hindu caste systemharbans wrote: Australia needs to change and deal with aggressiveness in their society and realize this is not helping their image one bit.

As a trivial example consider this: I know a white female from Rhode Island, very educated and smart, from a lily white n'hood; a few conversations with her, and you will know she knows people of color only through racial stereotypes; "your caste thing" et. al; and the chtzpah reaches a crescendo when she takes pride that Rhode Island was the first state to "free the slaves"

At the end of the day guys, lets consider the cold reality: we Indians are a bunch of cowards (see our reaction to Mumbai), self-centered, with no sense of nationalism other than north Indian liking Idli/Dosa, and South Indians liking Tandoori chicken and chana masala; we pay through our noses to go and study in Australia, the visa lines to enter west are getting longer and longer (so much for India's superpowerdom), and we have a spineless govt that can't even issue a warning to Aussi Mofos on these assualts and talks of bhaichara with terrorists who attack us. Why will anybody not have abject contempt & disdain for such a people?

Okay do we have any good reasons to be self confident??

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
I see Indians are being beaten in Australia but also by self-flagellation. So the agenda has been turned to India's weaknesses, Indians' character etc.
The focus should be on Australians-I know there are some reading this fora.
Australians, like East Europeans, are conscious of their status as the niggers of the white world. Hence what is acceptable in Australia is impolite in the West. (Yes that is much like the term West as used in exclusion of East Europeans). Indians have many sticks to beat Australia. There are ethical questions involved-is it just to help Aboriginines in their freedom struggle?-in the UN or through armed rebellion? Should there be a world-wide campaign to repatriate Australians to Mother England? When will White Christians apologise for their usual brand of missionary work among the natives? How much would be just reparations for genocide? Why are Aborigines still being incarcerated out of all proportion to their population ratio, and murdered in judicial custody-with impunity, no white man has ever been convicted for a black man's death for judicially sanctioned custodial murders.
I don't know if this race is congenitally prone to violence as some have speculated given their genetic antecedents, but it is likely that because there have been few Jews among them, Australians have never been truly civilised.

News International, the world's largest media house happens to be owned by the Australian born proprietor Rupert Murdoch, and is listed on the Sydney stock exchange. Covering a diverse collection of media outlets around the globe such as Fox News, The Times of London, and the Wall Street journal, in addition to several operations in India, the GOI is in a position to encourage Murdoch to highlight this matter. For example the threat of future access to the Indian markets and media being closed to AUstrialian mediahouses and telecoms operators, would be enough to concentrate the minds, however this is just a start.

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
Someone's posted tips on living in Aus.
http://www.rediff.com/getahead/report/2 ... -yours.htm
http://www.rediff.com/getahead/report/2 ... -yours.htm
Here are my tips for international students coming to Australia.
1) Never discuss cricket with your colleagues. Aussies can never accept that their team is not doing well and will release their anger in some form or the other. If they discuss cricket with you show your neutral only attitude. So next if you find out that Australian cricket team loses to Indian cricket team (which won't be a surprise any more!) then keep your excitement to yourself. Never criticise their team for not playing well, mind you!
2) Never discuss about your property or bank balance, which you have back home. Most of the people in Australia live from hand to mouth and become jealous easily if they come to know that u have a good bank balance and their arrogance comes out in one form or the other. Men should avoid displaying any show offs.
3) Avoid going to pubs or any nightclubs during weekends. The drinking capacity of Australians is huge and sometimes they go out of their limit, they may hurt you in that case when their consciousness is half lost.
4) Buy a second hand car if you do night shifts, you can buy 1980s model for as low as 800 Australian dollars, this is highly recommended.
5) If you have to go out in the night to receive your friend at railway station, always go out in a group of 4 to 5 people. Never ever go alone. If someone ask you " Do you have a spare dollar" reply gently and say "Sorry mate, I haven't got any change", rather than saying "NO" or simply pretending that you haven't listened to them.
6) If you are caught by a group of teens in the night address them as "mates". Show your neutral attitude even if they try to provoke you with their racial comments. Remain calm but never rebel. In most of the cases they will only humiliate you and then let you go which is still far better than getting physically hurt to the extent you don't know.
7) It is also advisable if you can attain a good physique as well by doing pushups and dumb-bells. This is not only for your own fitness but also will let your attacker think twice. You won't be a "soft target" any more if you look bit tougher.
Never eve tease any girl as you never know whom and all she is linked up with. Also if you are in a lonely train station waiting for a train and an unknown girl comes up and says "I am couple of dollars down to buy a ticket, can you lend me some". You have to bear in mind that the girl is not alone, there will be a group of boys hiding somewhere (you don't know). If you try to help that girl by taking your wallet out, she may access how much cash you are carrying which can be harmful to you. Simply reply patiently "Sorry mate I use my electronic ticket and therefore don't have any change". If that girl sits next to you on the railway platform bench, don't get tempted, rather change your seat and avoid talking to her. I have seen one incident related to what I have written above.
9) Respect everyone's privacy. Indians stay mostly in groups, share a house with 5 to 6 mates; don't be too noisy to your neighbours if you are having any parties, functions or get-togethers at home with your colleagues. Don't think that if your neighbour is NOT calling cops, he is a good neighbour. He might have some other (bad) plans to tackle this problem.
10) Try not to keep any moustaches and beards as it is not looked upon favourably here in Australia and when you keep them you are just making an odd man out for yourself. It will not be easy for an attacker to target you as Indian if you groom yourself well. As majority of Indians keep moustaches they make others easily recognise them that they have Indian origin. Once again I repeat moustaches and beards are not looked upon favourably in Australia. Removing moustaches and beards is still a far better option rather than risking your life! You may encounter any teenager or group of teenagers (who have lot of stress build up in them because their parents are split and they have no money to maintain their girl friend/s). He may identify you easily as an Indian from your moustaches and will make you as a "soft target". This can be the reason why out of all Asian communities only Indians are targetted by the attackers.
11) If you are walking alone on the road and you see a group of teenagers approaching towards you, don't try to be a hero; rather change your track and walk on the other side. Always remember: prevention is better than cure.
11) Always remember: "You" are the one who came to "Their" land. Try to mix up with them and understand their culture. "They" will not come looking for you to start friendship.
12) When using public transport, if you are using your native language be gentle as I have seen many Indians talking loudly to their friends or on phone. Never shout or talk loudly as it is considered as impolite in their culture.
13) Mostly all matured Australians are quite friendly with a great sense of humour. The whole Australian community should not be judged just because of the behaviour and the manners of some of the most ill bred Aussie teenagers. What I am appealing to all Indians is that if you have any bad experiences don't take it personally. Those physical/verbal and racial attacks are to release anger against Indian community as a whole and not personally against you. Forget it and keep aiming for what you have come "here" to achieve.
14) Last but not the least everything takes it own time. When our first generation Indians went out and settled abroad they might have faced much more hardships then what we experience it today. Remember that we are setting up stage for the future generation. If we cope up well and build up good relations with the Aussies it will be a lot easier for the people who will migrate here in the future. There should be an end to racism with the amount of highly qualified Asians entering Australia every year. Australians will get adjusted to all different cultures but they need their own time.

sanjaykumar, I was a bit put off by the use of the "n-word", though I understand the context. And as far as science knows, there is no such thing as the 'criminal gene' which allegedly infests aussie minds, so it's a sort of stereotyping assumption, on the lines of, "sneaky bania-hindus" or "honest warrior muslims" etc. On the other hand, there are more than likely problems in the euro-australian meme.sanjaykumar wrote:having said that, can we please have a discussion without arbitrary racist statements? thanks.

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
I just compiled some of the snippets I wrote for the 'Campus Review' journal after being asked to do so by the ALP youth wing kids and 2 Members of Parliament.
The attacks as reported by the Indian media are actually not addressing or even reviewing the cause of the issue in detail.Since there has been a 140% hike in Indian students coming to study in Oz between 2004-2008,very few measures have been taken by the Fed and state govt's primarily in NSW and VIC.They are not geared to handle such a large influx of students as support services or even the academics are neither equipped nor trained to teach students from various linguistic backgrounds as money was raking in at such a fast pace.Providers wanted to expand and compete before even having quality in place.
Now lets see how it all began!
Education System
Education was free for local students until 1989 when the Bob Hawke led govt of the Labor Party(ALP) introduced HECS(HighereD contribution scheme) where students had to contribute a fee of $1800 initially which later became proportionate to the course.Students could defer this until they graduated and got a job.The tax offsets would make you payback your dues subject to level of income.
Over the years unis became more and more reliant on federal and state grants on basis of research as there was a surge in the demand for education, the unis propped up in major suburbs of capital cities,38 of 39 are state owned(Bond Uni being the exception).
When the international student market saw a rise due to prominence and lack of facilities in South Asia ,Malaysians,HK and Singaporean students flocked down under.Soon new markets were to be created, with the rise of China & India's economy there was a need for educated professionals within, lack of facilities led students to explore outside.Australia marketed itself as cheaper than US,UK or even Canada.
The fallout
Research became a an obsolete word within universities and grants reduced terribly as state govt's had to divert funds to the agricultural sector due to the drought.International Fees became the new norm, fee rises upto 20% were seen every semester so as to cover the costs and yet have millions in surpluses(ANU has over $1b in reserves).Last 2 years saw a slight decline in student numbers in Victoria and NSW due to increased cost of living and a state govt backed discriminatory policy of not granting Travel concession to international students unlike other states which continue to provide subsidised transport to all students.
Reserves were dug into and infrastructure had to be upgraded, more academics hired, increased CPI.Labor when came into power at the centre in Nov 08 made it clear that it was not going to increase the HECS contrary to the demands of AVCC (now 'Universities Australia'-the representative group for unis),This increased the burden on international student revenue even more.Unis now hired sessional or casual tutors which meant research was now 'extinct'.
VSU
The VSU or Voluntary Student Unionism Legislation was brought in by the Liberal minister Brendon Nelson as compulsory student union fees was being increasingly used in political activity rather than services being provided on campus.Students could no longer be trusted with running services for themselves as it posed a great threat to the reputation of the university.Funding declined to as much as 5% of the previous fee collected.Impacting the services on campus, counseling, housing, student accommodation, doctors, clubs, events all extra curricular activity was diminished. International Students were by far the most affected as they were heavily reliant on these services.
Accommodation Issue
With the drought nearly wiping off farmlands, there has been a mass migration from the countryside to the urban areas for employment and survival. Thus there was a shortage in the housing market for affordable housing. This only stared to be addressed by the Labor govt after the elections in 08.At the same time unis were dis investing in uni owned housing such as dorms and apartment blocks, the private players enter the market an literally sweep up all empty spaces of land around the campuses. They only attracted the affluent, thus leaving the less fortunate to move to outer suburbs which are traditionally unsafer.
Economic argument
Jobs were being competed by new migrants who took up menial jobs due to a loophole in the immigration system, most Indians opted for cookery and hairdressing or accounting courses as the Oz govt declared these professions in demand thus leading to a bonus in acquiring Residency.BUT they took up other jobs such as cabbies, security and everything else than what they undertook studies.By now it was too late, laws were changed but the damage had been done.Protectionism kicked in and even genuine candidates were struggling for jobs although there was a shortage.
Thus we have an anti Indian sentiment amongst the Australians, mind you every person in Melbourne has at least 1/3 foreign heritage.50 % have at least one parent born outside OZ,but this is an economic war.Hence due to the soft nature of Indians, violence has been resorted to not just last week but since the last 18 months.
Whose fault is it?
In my opinion its the previous education minister Julie Bishop and the Australian Education International along with the State govts for not ensuring their capacity to handle the consequence, this is not the first time racism has come to light, the famous Speech of Pauline Hanson in parliament in the 1990's against asians, they genocide by the convict english descendants on the native Aboriginal population who were only apologized to a year back after 100 years of slavery and torture.
hope this gives you and idea how the events unfolded....

David Cartwright on Indian student assaults in Melbourne
Tuesday 2 June 2009
You may have seen media reports in recent days regarding the disturbing case of assaults against Indian students in Melbourne. This is of serious concern to everyone at ANZ. Many of our staff are Indian or have family origins in India and many more are simply appalled that these events and the racism which seems to be connected with them could take place at all.
It is completely unacceptable that small pockets of this kind of attitude appear to remain in any society and it's pleasing in recent days that so many government and community leaders in Australia have spoken out strongly against this type of behavior.
In Australia we have a rich diversity of cultures living and working side by side - multi-culturalism is part of the modern Australia and part of what makes it a great country to live and work in. It's also part of ANZ's fabric as a regional bank and part of our values which emphasise valuing every voice. I meet and talk to staff regularly in Bangalore, in Australia and throughout our business and although these incidents are shocking to all of us, I don't believe these incidents reflect the experience of our staff when visiting or living in Australia.
At ANZ cultural diversity is highly valued - it creates better business outcomes, helps attract and retain talent from around the world and reflects our diverse customer base. In line with our values, discrimination or racism will not be tolerated in any form. We have clear policies in this and I'd encourage all staff to be familiar with them. In the event people have any concerns about this issue, please talk to your line manager or your local HR representative.

Hindu extremists burn Kevin Rudd effigies

HINDU extremists burned effigies of Kevin Rudd and shouted angry slogans outside the Australian High Commission in New Delhi yesterday as fury over a series of attacks on Indian students in Melbourne reached dangerous new heights.
Amid growing concern in Canberra that the issue was damaging relations between the two countries, the Prime Minister sought to reassure India that Australia was not a racist nation.
However, a new flashpoint emerged, with accusations by Indian students in Melbourne that Victorian police used excessive force to break up a rally calling for action over racial violence. In New Delhi, about 100 members of the Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing yesterday staged protests outside Australia's high commission before meeting briefly with Canberra's top envoy to India, John McCarthy.
By the tone of this article, it seems to be an India engineered problem. Racism is actually a side issue.Indian cable networks have been running almost blanket coverage of the attacks under sensational headlines such as "Racism Beyond Shame" and "Racist Australia".
Indian newspapers have also been leading their front pages with news of the assaults, together with allegations that Melbourne police used unnecessary force on weekend protesters.
Victorian police said the use of force was appropriate, and blamed a group of "rabble-rousers" for hijacking the demonstration.
Demonstrators in India said Australians in the country need not fear violent retaliation. But BJP youth wing president Amit Thaker warned that his group would hold more protests and take further action if "the wrong acts are not stopped".
Indian blogs have taken an increasingly hysterical tone in recent days, with one even suggesting "Australians in India should be dragged on to the streets, stripped and beaten so badly they forget their names. That's the only way to teach these thugs and criminals."
Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
Does this news imply that there are non extremist Hindus? Hindus are "extremist" by definition. Show me some non extremist Hindus.Skanda wrote:Hindu extremists burn Kevin Rudd effigies .

Yes and which is why one can only agree very partially with mmasand's analysis.shiv wrote:Doesn't Austraila offer a whole lot of faltu courses like the UK's "Wigan and Leigh" university?
1. During the howard era - the drought co-incided with a huge commodities boom. So money was not really a problem. The govt could (and did) throw money around and still posted huge budget surpluses. It was all a question of incentives. If a guy out of high school could learn to drive a huge dumpster truck around the mines and earn $95 K, why the hell would he want to go to uni? Same for the bricklayers and other tradies in the industry.
2. Most of the non-GO8 Aus universities are basically glorified immigration agents. They offer mickey mouse courses and students do not really attend classes. They work more than the allowable 20 hrs p/w and basically try to recoup the costs of coming to study in Aus, while aiting for their residency. It suits every one fine. The Aussies - because, someone would do the crappy jobs for menial pay, and the usually mediocre indian students who flock to such unis - because they could recover their 'costs'.
3. Now incentives have changed - the boom has abated, many tradies are out of work and hence their angst at students. I presume Aus will manage this through targetting migration intake etc etc. I'm not sure how promoting 'research' at universities (assuming it is not being promoted currently) would have helped in the current situation.

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
We all know that Indian education system has delivered lots of bright students, who are able to get jobs anywhere across the globe. But we should also remember that there are plenty in india with good bank blances and less brain balances
. I believe this is the class, Australian Universities are targetting.
I also believe Indian-Students have some genetical problem. They give more respect to whites then average indians. Our indian students are ready to clean the toilets in MCG; but they feel shame if we ask them to perform same job back in India.

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
mmasand, what's your take on this Kevin Rudd's ALP regime? Particularly, IMO incase, ALP fails to foster relations with new delhi it would be their biggest failure on international affairs front. Liberal was quite better then labour when it came to preserving relations with India. Atleast they were inching closure on selling yellow cake. But Kevin Rudd and his clowns has such a bizarre zero tolerance policy when it comes to uranium thing! Also just too China centric...suffering from obsessive chinese disorder..

Re: India-Australia News and Discussion
Indians are not the only ones attacked in Australia: Cops
According to Victoria police sources, in 2007-08, there were 36,765 victims of crimes such as robberies and assaults, of which 24,260 were Caucasian and 1,447 were people of Indian origin.
Victoria's chief police commissioner Simon Overland, writing in the Herald Sun, has urged the Indian community to continue to work with the police to find an effective and sustainable solution.
Said Overland: "Some of these crimes are racially motivated; however I also believe that many of the robberies and other crimes of violence are simply opportunistic".
Indian community members here point out that some Indian students do not behave properly in public places, especially in trains and market places. They play loud music and speak loudly on the phone in public transport, some can hardly converse in English and many choose to just stick to people from their own region. (What rubbish is that? How does all that justify the attacks that have happened on the Indians in recent times?)
While increasing attacks on Indian students in Australia must be strongly condemned, giving it racial overtones is causing much concern amongst the over 200,000-odd Indian diaspora who call Australia home, Indian community leaders here say.
"Australia is certainly not a racist country. My children study here and they have not faced any discrimination", Moninder Singh, CEO of Australian Academy of Management & Science in the Sydney suburb of Quakers Hill, said.(Thats called logic!)
