Love her or hate her, Shireen Mazari’s exit from politics is a loss for Pakistan
Images Editorial, 26 May, 2023

Shireen Mazari may be a divisive figure, but she was a force to be reckoned with and her exit from the political arena has left us with fewer fierce women in politics.
She is not the only politician to leave the PTI in the past few days after being incarcerated over the riots following Imran Khan’s arrest, but she is the one whose exit shook us the most.
Mazari, the former human rights minister, is known for being bold, brash and not caring what anyone thinks. From her colourful hair to her feisty personality, the politician is someone who says and does what she wants.
Though her comments on Twitter in the past year or so had grown increasingly angry and conspiratorial, she remained a woman undeterred. She has faced sexist attacks from her parliamentary colleagues, abuse for upholding the basic principles of democracy and not forcing her daughter to vote for her own party and just being a woman who isn’t cowed by anyone. She worked on the extremely sensitive issue of ‘missing persons’ as well as several other laws, and at one time was known for being the loudest voice against human rights abuses. That she is exiting politics at such a tumultuous time is something for all of us to ponder on and lament.

It was Gen. Musharraf who appointed Madam Jalebi as the Director General of Pakistan Institute of Strategic Studies (PISS).

Madam Jalebi had this to say immediately about terrorism in her weekly column in The News in circa 1999, “But perhaps the Kashmiri freedom fighters need to be reminded of history: That freedom struggles like the Algerian only succeeded when the freedom fighters took the war to the French homeland. And the British only compromised with the Irish once the IRA took the war to the British Isles and London. These are the cruel realities of military struggles and so the Kashmir war must be taken to the Indian mainland, especially South India to make the ordinary Indian realise the costs of his government's occupation policy in Kashmir. If freedom is to be won through the barrel of a gun then niceties cannot prevail and efficiency and effectiveness should be the primary considerations”.

The country’s top brass, including the civil and military leadership, has decided that former premier Imran Khan will face a military trial, or court martial, for his alleged crimes which he is accused of committing over the past year, which culminated in the rioting, vandalism and arson that occurred on May 9, The Friday Times (TFT) has learnt....
Sources maintained that some key PTI leaders are likely to become ‘approvers’ or state’s witnesses against Khan. The list of these erstwhile close aides to Khan includes his former media tsars Firdous Ashiq Awan and Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, along with some other senior PTI leaders considered to be Khan’s close confidantes.

We need to exploit major fault lines within the uniformed jihadis. Until then we got to sit tight. Uniformed Jihadis also need to eat. A bad economy will have to hurt them at some point. Kaptaan has surely shaken on that front. Expecting him to dismantle the whole establishment is not possible. We need the Talibunnies for that.

The frustrated awaam can now clearly see that the will of majority is not enough to dismantle the chokehold of TSPA. The frustrated abdul on the street will soon find a lot of appeal in TTP's claim that they are the righteous liberators of the land of pure. Taliban will soon have more home grown supporters and the attacks on TSPA, police and the writ of the state will only go up from this point onwards.

Looks like PAF is worried about those AKs on the loose.
PAF seeks ‘record of gun owners’ within 5km radius of Nur Khan base in Rawalpindi
RAWALPINDI: The Noor Khan Airbase authorities have asked the local police and the commissioner to “maintain and share the data” of individuals possessing weapons within a five kilometres radius of the base for the purpose of ‘record keeping’.

The request of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) came in light of aerial firing around the base, recovery of more than 450 bullets besides chemical thread, and damage to a cabin’s windscreen by stray bullets in Feb this year.
According to sources, the PAF base authorities asked the local police to maintain and share the data of all those people possessing weapons in a five-kilometre radius for “record-keeping”. According to sources, a similar request to the divisional commissioner and police had been made about two weeks before the Feb 24 incident. Still, the authorities were unable to keep a check on the firing in the vicinity of the airbase, particularly Fazal Town, Khurram Colony, Muslim Town, Dhoke Gangal, Dhoke Lalyal, Chah Sultan, Dhoke Khabba, Dhoke Elahi Buksh, and Dhoke Farman Ali.

This type of firing has disturbed flight operations; recently two stray bullets hit the windscreen of a service mechanical transport signal cabin at the airbase.

'Fund starved': Pakistan High Commission shuts its in-house school in Delhi
While the notice issued by the High Commission to its staff cites 'low enrolment' for shutting down the school, many reports suggested that the unprecedented step was attributed to the financial crisis that Pakistan has been facing
FP Staff May 29, 2023

The Pakistan High Commission in Delhi has been forced to shut down its in-house school that was used exclusively by the members of the High Commission, according to a report.
While the notice issued by the High Commission to its teaching and non-teaching staff cites “low enrolment” for shutting down the school, many reports suggested that the unprecedented step was attributed to the economic and financial crisis that Pakistan has been facing. The embassy is finding it hard to meet day-to-day expenses and fulfil its basic requirements, the reports added.

A hollow achievement?
After much dilly-dallying, Pakistan has made its first purchase of Russian crude oil — at a “discounted” price. With Russia looking for new outlets for its crude oils and Pakistan looking for cheaper crude to overcome its acute balance of payments crisis, the deal serves both countries well.

With a multipolar world in the making, and Pakistan’s traditional allies from China, Iran, Türkiye and even Saudi Arabia preferring to be a part of a new regional bloc led by China, this could be a strategic move towards a closer and warmer relationship between Islamabad and Moscow.
In an era where the race is on to capture markets, how would Pakistan’s traditional Gulf and Arab oil suppliers react to any “long term” deal between Islamabad and Moscow? This is a point of concern to Pakistan. Currently, 80 per cent of Pakistan’s oil requirements of roughly 154,000 barrels per day are being met by our traditional Gulf and Arab suppliers, mainly Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Yet to be fair, global markets are in a transition. Due to sanctions, Russia had to relinquish many markets, especially in Europe. Saudis and other Arab Gulf suppliers are filling up those gaps. Hence Pakistan resorting to Russian crude may not be a cause of real concern to Saudi Arabia and the Emirates. After all, they have not reacted harshly to the purchase by India of Russian oil.

India’s imports of crude oil from Russia soared to a record 1.6 million barrels per day in February and are now higher than combined imports from its traditional suppliers, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
Further, in sharp contrast to the past, Pakistan’s Gulf Arab allies have resorted to realpolitik on issues of major concern to Pakistan vis-à-vis India, such as Kashmir. Pakistan cannot stay oblivious to all those developments. It needs to protect its interests. But Pakistan’s dependence on financial support from Saudi Arabia and the UAE makes it vulnerable. {Bhat? Is this an admission that ummah birathers have abandoned TSP in favour of kufr SDRE India?} Pakistan will need to balance its stance and present its case before its Gulf and Arab friends, forcefully and diplomatically.
Yet, to be fair, the mathematics is not that simple. Shipping crude to Karachi from Russian ports means higher shipment costs. Pakistan’s existing oil imports from the gulf come via Dubai, roughly 1,300 kilometres from Karachi port. The nearest Russian seaport is 8,000 kilometres away. All this could mean an additional cost of somewhere around $10-15 per barrel.

Further, unlike the refined oil sold by Saudi Arabia, Russia would sell crude oil to Pakistan. With Pakistani refiners configured to process lighter Arabian crudes, the consignment of heavier crude could mean an additional refining cost too. As per some media estimates, this could also add some $4 per barrel to the overall cost.
Pakistan will also need to overcome the issue of product portfolio from refining the Russian crude in Pakistan. Russian crude oil produces 50pc furnace oil and 32pc diesel as compared to Arabian oil, which produces 45pc diesel and 25pc furnace. This detail is significant in the context of Pakistan’s oil consumption pattern.

Diesel, used for transportation, makes up 39pc of Pakistan’s total consumption, while furnace oil, used for power generation, makes up just 15pc. As a result of refining the Russian crude, Pakistan will end up with more furnace oil than it needs. This would add to the ultimate cost, reports have been emphasising.

Manish_P wrote:A-o-A (Non-resident) Bakistani per capita income increases year on year (in PKR terms)

Yawn - Average income drops to $1,568
Pakistan’s economy experienced a notable decline in its GDP size in dollar terms, growth rate and per capita income during the outgoing 2022-23, marking the slowest expansion in the country’s overall output over the past four years.

The per capita income in dollar terms fell to $ 1,568 in FY23 from $ 1,766 in the previous year and $ 1,677 in FY21. This suggests the deterioration of the standard of living and well-being of almost all segments of society with a sharp decline in personal incomes.
Considering USD to PKR exchange rates it is PKR 287,858 (year 2021), PKR 375,648 (year 2022), PKR 450,016 (year 2023)

Lahori logic paindabad...
I do not understand. If income in PKR is virtually static IF not shrinking and the currency has depreciated by almost 30%, how does Dollar value only shrink by 12%. What am I missing, should GDP not also shrink by 30%?

NEW DELHI: India may have been overly generous to Pakistan on multiple occasions, yet the latter keeps exporting terror day in and day out, says Satish Chandra, former Indian envoy to Pakistan. The Pakistani Army has vested interests in portraying India as a hostile country and has brainwashed generations of Pakistanis that India is a hegemon that wants Pakistan to disintegrate, Amb Chandra told StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Pakistan rules out talks as India tries to win over G20
• Foreign secretary says friendly countries’ decision to stay away from moot vindicates Islamabad’s position
• Oscar-winning song takes centre-stage in Srinagar as Delhi tries to woo world with ‘soft power’

ISLAMABAD / NEW DELHI: Pakistan on Tuesday ruled out negotiations with New Delhi on Kashmir before the reversal of India’s 2019 move to revoke the occupied territory’s special status, even as a Delhi-hosted G20 meeting in Srinagar continued in an attempt to showcase Indian-held Kashmir as a tourist haven.

The firm declaration came during a briefing given by Foreign Secretary Dr Asad Majeed to the National Assembly’s committee on foreign affairs. At the National Assembly briefing, the foreign secretary said the decision by important countries like Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye and Indonesia to stay away from the event in Srinagar vindicated Pakistan’s stance and showed that the world recognises the disputed status of the valley.

He made it clear that such summits can in no way legitimise the illegal and unilateral annexation of occupied territories.

I ask myself, ok.

Do the Pakistanis want to say that if India restores those articles. They will accept the state as Indian?

What they are doing via these repeated false projections is to try and see if lutyens gang, WKK, track thoo or any aman-tamasha groups in India (or abroad) take the bait and ask the Indian government to initiate talks.
