Its a Russian PKM in Indian Army Service Classified as a 'General purpose machine gun' on wikipedia.
Personally i would call it an MMG but I'm no guru :)

AFAIK PKM is not part of IA's infantry weapons.(Please correct me if wrong)

It could be an PKM captured from Millitants and issued for IA service.

Guys, I just got this website from a friend... it is a blog by an US Air Force guy who has traveled for an year in India visiting various Indian bases etc. He is studying in the DSC Wellington (at that time) and is now back in Hawaii.

http://heretherebemonkeys.blogspot.com/ ... t-one.html

There are many interesting pictures and Videos in the Four part series. Of particular interest to me was this UAV Picture from Nashik.

Thanks for the pics mate! Is it just me or are radars mounted on the noses recent editions (they look new as well)? As I believe I have seen previous pics of IN UH-3s (note referring to Augsta Westland Sea Kings inservice with IN for a while but the UH-3 bought from US with INS Jalashwa) without these additions. Possibly a ramification of Sikorsky recently agreeing to service all IN SeaKings after scathing CAG report on their serviciblity. And Sikprsky making a bid to IN for modern helos.

+ added later:

Look at this pic of Jalashwa with its entire air wing on display:
http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Imag ... shwa05.jpg

None of the helos have this radar dome AKAIK.

Thanks for the link. made interesting reading. looks like he really didnt like the Staff College course

Liked the description of the flights into Leh and out of it in Il-76s

http://heretherebemonkeys.blogspot.com/ ... -five.html
To get to Jammu, we boarded an IL-76 from Leh. We were the first to board, so we all got decent seats and made ourselves comfortable. Once all of the officers had boarded, someone released the hordes and our plane was swamped with Indian soldiers trying to get out of Leh. I couldn't believe the pilots were willing to fly with passengers sitting in every possible nook and cranny in the back of the aircraft. Somehow, we still made it to Jammu..

I think he is an USAF guy - explains the softness

also not exactly a bright mind if he does not understand the importance of the Kargil rocks and why the Indian soldiers were dying for it.

Guys, this guy has his idiosycracies, he does not understand Indians or Indian-ness. He was in India was a course, covered lot of areas and has posted some interesting stuff. this is afterall a blog, worse things have been written about our armed forces by the WKK brigade. Atleast he has not indulged in Taj mahal, Snake charmers, cow on the road style writing.

Fuse. Colour indicates proximity or contact fuse.

Well, I read in a book about Kargil war long ago, i think the one Mr. Sawant wrote that IA did use Air burst HEER shells.
Before this it was timer fuzes. They calculated the time it would take for a shell to land and then time it to explode just seconds before it to create an air burst effect.

This specific HC is similar to the one used for SAR duties off Jamnagar, which would require it to land in water, marshy areas for rescuing downed pilots.

thanks, "SAR" it makes immense sense to have floats... from the background I didn't guess the "Rann of Kutch" I was more thinking about the Mumbai region. Methinks it would be usefull in the Marshy region near Karwar, Backwaters of Kerala around Kochi, Sunderbans, Kaveri, Krishna delta regions etc. Good Point Jagan Garu.

Please Id this vehicle. http://www.flickr.com/photos/torqueavia ... otostream/
From the formation sign of the Arrow, it looks like "7th Infantry Div".
It might be some variant or Recce/Strike vehicle in IA's inventory but cannot place it.

This is a typical unexceptional looking 'road' in Arunachal Pradesh (unexceptional for AP that is).
Image

A closer look shows that it is covered by multiple bunkers. These are older, probably after '62 and and look as if they are not used/needed any more. Every road like this looks like it is zeroed in by arty in multiple locations.

^^^Victor. I visited Tawang about 1.5 years ago and saw similar bunkers everywhere. I asked some armymen and they said that these bunkers will be occupied at the time of war. Once or twice a year these are also cleaned up.

I went into a few of these. They were in read-to-occupy condition. As per the kind of CBM with Lizard, there is a limited number of our forces that are directly near the border. Most of them are at base camps. This was done as a hope that Lizard will also respond accordingly. And actually they have - at least technically. There are only limited places where eye-ball to eye-ball contact is there between the two forces. In the more 'plane' areas, these bunkers also had the semi-circular marked/short wall built up area for AAA (anti aircraft)

I have to upload the awesome pics that I took at the war memorials on way and at Tawang. My bad. Will post soon.

This pic can be used as lesson 101 in military geograhy - from what I can gather, those bunkers are not to guard the road. After all this place is well with-in Indian borders and if PLA can actually breach forward defences, the roads/culverts will be blow up first to deny access....Important thing is, they overlook the river valley below. While is is difficult to tell whether the river bed and the terrain arround it can support mechanical trasnport, it can support movement of infantry and their support train of mules. May be, movement. although restricted, of powerful trucks like we see with Russian army (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... az-255.jpg) is possible.

Therefore, apart from holding mountain trails going over passes, it is important to guard the river valleys as well. These are some of the few axises available for large scale movement in high mountains.
