Second that.... Stan garu showing his prowess in a non-sports/hockey thread!!!
Surprising that the India Intelligence was not aware of this plot.

Apparently, it was planned in advance!
Honestly, given the state of affairs of our agency, is that a surprise?

The killing of the BDR chief is a hammer blow to India and its hopes of getting anti-Indian forces out of BD

The bodies were first ridden with bullets and then bayoneted. Some of the bodies showed unimaginable atrocities (eye sockets etc). Some of the bodies were deposited in sewers that lead to the Buriganga river and some in ponds infested with magurs. Many bodies were burnt partially and deposited in mud pits, ponds etc. Most of the officers had their rank badges removed, many even their clothes. They may not have necessarily decomposed, but they may be hardly identifiable. It is still some form of Indian-English, so you may not have seen the right translations from Bengali.

Boss, I have nt traveled past Tirupati to the north -- and that too just once.

At some point it becomes amply clear that media in India is a solid joke, just like the venerable IIMwaalas. The media have enough time to wrap around themselves about Hindu Taliban and Hindooo fundoos, but they cant figure out a damn thing about a country that is going up in flames right next to them in real-time. On the other hand, one can sit 1000s of miles away and investigate enough details about a particular issue to sufficient depth to make a strong case in point -- all from scratch. All hail the power of Google and please go spit on the dhimmedia for my sake. This is the meaning of psy-ops.

Well there is one aspect for sure -- loss of 20% officers in one fell swoop, really destroys the current Bangladeshi Army, and it was not accidental, why was this done?

1) To create more vacancies such that "suitable" people can be inducted?
2) To reduce the ability of the army to strike against targets -- these would be smugglers and Islamists?
3) Get a positive sympathy factor for Army such that a previously planned purge of collaborates comes to a naught?

This looks like the handiwork of a desperate force -- unlikely that the govt itself would take this kind of risk; that to while in a good position -- and why?

This is clearly Jihadi handwork.

Bangladesh army reaffirms support for government
DHAKA, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Bangladesh's powerful army has reaffirmed its support for the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after a mutiny by paramilitary troops killed at least 80 people, mostly army officers.

"Let me tell you all again that the Bangladesh army is subservient to the government," army chief General Moeen U. Ahmed told reporters.

"We are a people's army serving the nation and upholding democracy. Please stay calm. We are trying to address the situation and resolve (disputes) with the help of everyone," he said after a meeting with Hasina at her residence late on Friday.

The impoverished South Asian nation has suffered several military coups since independence in 1971. This week's mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) border guards was over pay and command and was not politically motivated, officials said

Warring BDR men send feelers to BSF
Manan Kumar

NEW DELHI: Even as BDR jawans surrendered en masse at their headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday evening, India decided to remain in high alert mode to secure its borders of suspected misadventures from Bangladesh side.

Without any command structure, the mutiny in a rudderless BDR that has now spread to all 12 border sectors of Bangladesh is not likely to subside soon, top sources told The New Indian Express. “With at least 70 of the top brass killed by mutineers, the BDR is like a rampaging wild elephant with no one to command it. The situation is very fluid along the border where the BDR has entrenched deep to fight the Bangladesh army,” a senior Home Ministry official said.

Amid high uncertainty, problems for the BSF increased as the BDR, with army hot on its tail, sent strong feelers to help it get refuge in case of any exigency. BSF sector commanders received these feelers at least from three BDR sectors in Bangladesh _ Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet that lie opposite BSF sectors of Hili in South Dinajpur, Berhampur and Shillong respectively.

Hili sector commander received a written request from its BDR counterpart. There were apprehensions that the Bangladesh army may then attack Indian posts to get BDR men back thus forcing India to retaliate in defence and bring the two countries close to war. Civilians were sent with messages by the BDR even as violent clashes between the army and BDR were reported along the entire Bangladesh border.

“They have said that ‘do not fire at us even if there is some crossfire, we will fight the army till we can but if things go worse, we will come to you. We are counting on you’,” said a BSF source. The unprecedented situation forced the Indian security think-tank to go into a huddle. The BSF has been given clear instructions from the Government after one emergency meeting called by the Cabinet Secretary and another by the Home Minister to “take BDR men into custody” as per procedure if they seek help. “They would be then handed over to authorities at an appropriate time,” said a senior official.

Someone mentioned this on bangla cricket forum,

It seems most of the army officers who were killed were deputed from RAB or were army officers with past history of acting against BNP. And that combined with imminent actions against the Razakars who were to be tried for 71 war-crimes.

It leads me to believe that BNP-Razakar-ISI nexus is behind this plot. Also DGFI has only its chief changed, Maj Gen Golam Mohamed was replaced by SH but a lot of its officers whom he recruited during his term still stayed back yet to be replaced. These people are the eyes and ears of the organisation or significant nodes.

the name of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhry is popping up again and again. especially since millions were distributed freely among mutineers.

bhais, just got of the phone with someone very close to me in the RAB-1 intel/army source in dhaka, there is huge pressure from the mid level officers in the army on the top level (especially on chief gen. moeen) and the govt. to dissolve the BDR and re-structure the border security system. and also major pressure mounting on the authority to try the guilty murderers/rapists from BDR through military court martial process, since generally BDR crime is punished through criminal court! also the army issued a notice to all the army commanding officers that were posted in BDR all over the country asking them to report to the nearest army bases/cantonments and then just stay put! oh also, the brig. gen. who was appointed as the new BDR head (can't remember his name right now) has been asked by his other fellow officers not to take the DG-BDR position and apperently he is not going to! and yes, all the murderers will be hunted down along with their instigators, planners, other masterminds...

Is someone from this forum posting on bangla cricket, just to keep things clear?

the killing of Col. Gulzar is very similar with the way Chief of Maharashtra ATF Hemant Karkare was killed in Bombay.

AL angle gets another point now

AL hurriedly transferred RABs to BDR in the last 2 weeks
Just some examples: Intelligence chief of RAB Gulzar, the guy who caught Bangla bhai, transferred 3 days ago. Some of my friends moved from RAB to BDR last week. Some young guy on TV just said he moved last week too.

AL unknowingly put all its RAB arms into BDR and bought them under one umbrella. This gave it's enemies a good opportunity wipe them all out in one swing. It seems to me that AL wanted to assert control over BDR since it is only other military organisation apart from Army. In it's haste to get things done quickly, it forgot to take precautionary steps.

The event happened over a span of 3 freakin days!!!!! My fufu called her mom to her place in the BDR campus a few days before this event. The evening before this happened, things seemed very fishy to my fufu's mom. My fufu told her mom to stay with her to take care of her 5 sons. The evening before the massacre, things were uttopto. And my fufu told her mother that they THOUGHT something's about to happen within the BDR campus...but they don't know what and when. My mom couldn't give me more details about what happened the evening before...but it was CLEAR to them inside the campus that things were turning bad.

In the BDR hall, when the first attack occured - at that time my fufu was RIGHT THERE. She was lucky to not get hit by any bullet or anything. She mentioned that they came in groups firing on them. As soon as that happened, a few of them were taken aside as hostage...and they tied everyone up, tied their hands, covered their eyes with black cloth. The jawans said to them that they are going to kill them...and they tactfully worked with the jawans saying that they're doctors..annd since some jawans were already hurt, who would cure them? That's why, their eyes were opened, and they were locked in a room where they continously performed surgeries on the wounded jawans.

The loot paat:
The loot paat happened ALL night, and a long way into the next day. Every now and then, groups of jawans (once in group of 11, then in group of 5, then 8...that's how many i got to hear) came in. The first time that they came in after the morning massacre, the jawans basically broke into the house by firing and kicking on the door. They knocked before...but my fufu's mom didn't open. Then after the guys came in, they said that they had to search the house...and all they did was took the cash and gold...and left.

One of the groups came, and they took my fufu's mother's glucometer. My fufu's mom is very courageous - so she protested. The guys threatened to kill her...and she said 'tomra eita diye ki korba? ami rogi manush, eita amar kache rekhe jao'. They gave up on her, threw it on the floor and broke it.

All this time that I spoke with my mom...my mom was continously making reference to 'these three days'. I pointed out to her that there was a total holdup of 33 hours. She confirmed that it has happened over a period of THREE days. And that things continued to happen EVEN after the army moved in.

One more news, which may be old:
The gono dhorshon occured ALL NIGHT LONG. It was mostly the officers' wives and daughters.

Anti-liberation forces instigate BDR-men to attack army officers
Staff Correspondent
The Bangladesh Today - February 28, 2009

An organised gang influenced by anti-liberation forces in a preplanned way instigated BDR members to launch barbaric attacks on army officials and killed them intentionally in a move to create an anarchic situation in the country. This allegation was made by participants at a discussion meeting organised by Ekattur er Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee at WVA auditorium in the capital on Friday afternoon. Political leaders, lawyers and professors took part in the discussion presided over by National Professor Kabir Chowdhury.

The participants said after the take over of power by Awami League-led 14-party alliance government, the trial of war criminals has been demanded by the people and that has already been approved by the parliament. Under this circumstance, an organised gang influenced by anti-liberation force instigated the BDR members to create an anarchic situation in the country in order to foil the proposed trial of war criminals.

They said good numbers of fundamentalists were appointed at different significant sectors of the country during the tenure of BNP-led four-party alliance government. Now they are trying to destroy the mission and vision of the government including the trial of war criminals so that it does not take any steps against the war criminals.

Barrister Tania Amir said in order to create countrywide anarchic situation to foil the proposed trial of war criminals, an organised armed gang influenced by anti-liberation forces launched attack on army officials and killed them intentionally. They also violated their wives during the attack which lost happened in 1971.

"To keep the situation under control, our Primer Minister Sheikh Hasina announced amnesty but the amnesty will not cover of murderer and violations. Trial of killers and violators must be held under existing procedures," she said.

Workers party president also MP Rashed Khan Menon said soon after taking decision over trial of war criminals, a certain group are becoming very active to create anarchic situation throughout the country. "We will have to take steps against this vested quarter carefully, because conspirators might instigate and create more untoward situations anytime," he said.

Kabir Chowdhury said soon after announcing amnesty, the situation came under control but it does not mean that the mutineers will be freed from criminal offence. Trial is must for killers and violators. "The government will have to reform the function of BDR and different intelligence departments immediately and take measures for ensuring trial of mutineers," he said.

There had been claims that she had been burnt in her house before. Seems like she was either brought to where Maj Gen Shakil was and then disposed of. There had also been claims that she was raped. She was the one who was apparently caught in the airport with 6cr Taka a few days back. The children of the Chowdhurys are still missing.

The body of Nazneen Shakil Shipu, wife of slain BDR chief Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, was identified by relatives and an officer on Saturday. At least 10 more bodies, including that of a woman, were earlier recovered from a site at BDR HQ.

RAB-2 commanding officer Shamsul Zaman Khan told bdnews24.com: "I'm sure it's the wife of the DG, Nazneen Shakil Shipu." He said the body was found with a blindfold over the eyes and wrapped in a curtain. Nazneen's relatives at the site, also confirmed the identity.
Apparently, the BDR jawans used the chant of "Joy Bangla" when giving the interview on the first day. So the e-media has been using this cue and making a case for how they could not be Razakar-inspired. Thats because "JB" is the slogan used during 1971. The Razakars wanted that changed to "Bangladesh Zindabad" just to rhyme with the Urdu phrase "Pakistan Zindabad". What a dumb explanation, if the Razakars wanted to mislead everyone to show they are not what they are, would they say JB or BZ?!

Other signs of Razakar-ology in some form: 1) The song that characterized the language movement in 1952 "Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano Ekushe February" is anathema to the standard Razakar-ite, 2) the radio station of BD was initially called "Bangladesh Betar" during Sh. Mujib days and was later changed to "Radio Bangladesh" on the insistence of the Razakars (just to rhyme with "Radio Pakistan"), 3) the heroes of the Razakars are Jinnah, Monem Khan, Golam Azam, Shah Azizur Rahman (who opposed the division of Pakistan at an address to the UN general assembly in 1971 and who later became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh!), Abdur Rahman Bishwas (who later became the President of Bangladesh), Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mujahid and Saka/Foka Chowdhury etc., 4) There is an ongoing demand to replace "Amar Sonar Bangla" because it was written by a kafir, 5) Another demand is to have the famous Enemy Property Act of pakistan in some form, 6) Standard chants of Shariah of course for icing on the cake.

Did this one man prevent complete takeover of BD by the Razzakars?

I hope that we are keeping a close watch and should rush in to act if any more pro-Indian/anti-Razzakar/anti-Jehadi forces(like the army chief) are threatened.

Back to 1971 war: Hand of Pak friends seen in mutiny
The root of what is turning out to be the world’s worst mutiny in recent times could go all the way back to an event Bengal and the rest of India cannot forget: the Liberation War of 1971.

The Bangladesh Rifles mutiny, in which scores of army officers and several others have been killed, could have been engineered to thwart a determined effort by the Shiekh Hasina government to punish the pro-Pakistan collaborators of 1971 who are still friends with Islamabad, sources told The Telegraph.

The Bangladesh government today said the mutiny was “pre-planned” and that “millions of takas” had been spent on its execution. No suspect was officially named — that task has been left to a six-member committee which will probe the carnage.

But government sources said they saw an “ISI hand” in the mutiny. “The issues involved — pay and perks parity — were not so grave that it could have led to a spontaneous revolt of such magnitude that it warranted the killing of so many army officers,” an official said.

The sources said the real cause of the revolt could be linked to the drive to punish the “war criminals” — one of the most important promises made in the Awami League’s election manifesto.

After coming to power two months ago on a landslide, Hasina’s Awami League moved a resolution in parliament that all “war criminals” would be tried and punished.

The sources said many of the “war criminals” were now leaders of the hardline Jamaat-e-Islami and were known for their close ties with Pakistan. “This resolution by the Awami League and its resolve to push ahead with the election promise obviously upset the Jamaat leaders who realised that sooner rather than later the government would zero in on them,” an official said.

The extent to which the Jamaat leaders were upset can be gauged from the fact that recently Pakistan sent Zia Ispahani, a special envoy, to Dhaka to discuss the issue with Bangladesh’s foreign minister.

After the meeting, the special envoy had told reporters that this was not the right time to punish the war criminals. “Pakistan wants to help Bangladesh now, so they should not go ahead with their resolution,” Ispahani had said.

If the suspicion of the Bangladesh officials turn out to be true, it will mark a disturbing turnaround for the BDR which, in its earlier avatar as the East Pakistan Rifles, had taken up arms against the Pakistan Army in 1971. Since then, barring some skirmishes, the border force has been largely accommodative of India’s concerns.

However, over the years, the lower ranks of the force could have been infiltrated by hardline elements, the sources said.

Hasina today said the violence was a “plot by a section of conspirators” to destabilise her government and refused to grant amnesty to those who indulged in killings.

She told reporters after a visit to Dhaka’s Mirpur Cantonment to console the families of the dead commanders: “It seems a certain group staged the incident. It must also be inquired if any quarter provoked this incident. We must see whether there was any plan to use this incident for a different purpose.”

Jahangir Kabir Nanak, the minister for local government and the key negotiator with the rebels, said “millions of takas” were distributed to make the plot a success.

He also wondered who was behind the group of people seen egging on the mutineers by standing outside the complex and shouting slogans such as “BDR, you go ahead, we are with you”.

In all the orgy of violence - I felt a slight relief

The memories of the BSF jawan slung like an animal - used to enrage me

Looking at the way the bodies of their own men are being handled, I now understand that it seems to be normal in a country where bodies abound after floods and other disasters.

Anyway this is one huge mess

Great job stan

I hope that in the aftermath of this tragedy the Bangladeshi people realize what the association of terrorist states like Pakistan can bring. I hope India can play a positive role in all this and work with Bangladesh to create an environment of trust. A good working relationship between the two govts and armies will bode well for the region.

Another issue for concern is the missing BDR jawans who have surprisingly simply 'melted away'.

All reports / TV etc showed a cordon by the BDA of the BDR HQ. Reports were that there were ~ 7000 BDR jawans.

At the conclusion, when the BDA entered the HQ, only ~ 300 jawans were found..... 6700 HAD ESCAPED

Of these ~ 6700 runaways, ~200 have been arrested in civilian clothing at various checkpoints. This still leaves ~ 6500 unaccounted for.

They could also be armed :(

Could such a mass escape have happened without help from outside / advance planning ? What was the army cordon for ? How did they cross it ? The whole incident is very very fishy :-?

more have melted away into the bush in other towns. some of them could be uninvolved who feared a army backlash. but there are probably others who left the BDR for good now to form a armed islamic militia in support of their political formations.

and its not even two years before the "Bangla Bhai" menace was put down.

Has there been any official response from Dilli?

IMHO, full support and assistance - material, expertise, taka - should be rendered on demand to the fledgling AL sarkar in Dhaka.

Wish our dhimmedia would take the lead in national interest for once and run high-decibel exposes on razakar activity, the '71 genocide, the BNP and Jamaat treachery and the like..... I know, hoping to find martians on the moon is a likelier prospect.

Two points;

Mrs IG was livid at RAW for being surprised at the coup against Mujib Ur Rehman. So there is track record of sleeping on the job .
Most likely the BDR mutineers are in WB with the Comme govt clueless. Its important to rout them and hand them over to BD.

This is complete removal of a capability. Now who would be interested in doing it *at this time.*
Clearly, when the going is tough for Pak, we were distracted by Mumbai (west), manufactured lawyers chaos in Chennai(south), and now this in the (east); meanwhile J&K is p!ssful. does that mean something is waiting to happen in northern heartland?

I see Paki-Chini bhai bhai written all over it.

It's an attempt to push for the settlement of Bangladesh on the agenda before the settlement of NaPakistan. Historic moments all these - It's time to review our grand strategy and it's HUGE recruiting season.

the enemy property act is still in force in BD though not usually enforced for the last decade.

singha ji, somehow all this reminds me eerily of your scenario in the scenarios thread.
man, you have some imagination !

stan, superb work keeping the things in perspective.
whatever reports from BD are coming through speaks of islamist connection.

The weakness is that neither in India nor BD do the "sane" elements react to bestiality with bestiality but instead with misplaced and ineffective "sanity" and Gandhism. Top razakars and ISI/BNP/DGFI fundoos should be found in body bags instead of being mollycoddled with amnesty BS. One hopes someone somewhere (hellooo Dilli...) takes full advantage of the BDA mid-level officers' fury along with the shock and widespread revulsion. This is a chance to begin a full fledged catharsis in BD capitalizing on the landslide given to AL and it would be a tragedy to let it slip. It certainly seems the BD general population is ready and willing.

The islamists could not have pulled this off unless large core sectors of the intelligence as well as the military collaborated - it was kind of punishment for those sections of the military command that have been seen to be not active enough or not having done enough to secure electoral victory for the Islamists. There is more to come and no need to underestimate the strength of the Islamists within the state and elite networks of BD.

er um our media is indulging in shouting matches on slumdawgs and going after their pet projects. TOI coverage has been very minimal. nobody incl our "dilli mandarins" seem to have much of a clue and if they have are doing a great "chankian" job of hiding this wisdom.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/fe ... ion-mutiny

The renegade unit killed their commanding officers and raped officers' wives, the army said. They also shot dead friends and family. More than 2,000 rebels took over the regiment headquarters, holding more than 100 people hostage. They only surrendered after the country's prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, sent in tanks and warned they were on a "suicidal path".

Yesterday the Guardian was taken on a tour of the colonial bungalow where Maj Gen Ahmed, his wife and another military couple, Colonel Delowar and his wife, were killed. There was blood on the wall and floor, among the shattered glass and broken furniture. The army said Col Delowar was beaten repeatedly over the head with a stone, and that his wife died after a television was dropped on her skull.

Mrs Ahmed was shot, raped and killed by being thrown off a five-floor building, the army said. The body of the major general was found in a shallow grave. Many of the bodies were dumped in hastily dug holes covered by little more than mounds of dirt. Others had been thrown into the sewers of the sprawling compound that housed the soldiers and many of their families.

"There were 63 persons arrested by the police. Among them three masterminds. They confessed all this to the police," said Major Shumon Ahmed.

The death toll looks likely to rise, with dozens of senior officers missing.

If any DBRiete has crossed over into India, India needs to "take care" of these guys.

This is another window of opportunity that India will pass-the-file away through.

its totally premature to say "evil designs defeated/exposed" and so on. we
will see if the BA can or will catch and hang the ringleaders and whether their PM will now dare to follow through on prosecuting the razakars.

if she pulls back into her shell, that itself is the "mission kill" desired at the cost of some cheap low level cadres in BDR. plus the bonus of getting a chunk of pro-govt BA top leaders already killed.

until now I'd say islamists-10, BA-2, India-0

As I see it, Hasina has to use this opportunity and use the angered BD Army to not only purge the BDR of Razakars and Pakistani elements, but also get the fundamentalists and Razakars into jail and some hung.

This will also weaken Khaleda Zia's party which finds support of these anti BD pro Pak cadres!

It is not Hasina's job but India's to make sure the Razakars are purged. But since our gobermand is in a position to take chankian decisions only after reading tomorrows newspapers, i guess we will have to wait a little more to confirm our suspicions that GOI is keeping all options open on the development in BD also.

Btw I only hope the final score will not read India (-1).

The razakars are bangladeshis. The right person to bring them to justice is the bangla govt and sheikh haseena being the bangla pm is the right person to do it. How can india enter the scene here when the razakars are not our citizens?

Hasina's life and survival is in hand of COAS BD at the moment. the situation could easily have turned the other way if he took a different posture during the mutiny and called in his "111-mkb coup brigade".

the posture of the Aam junta is unclear this point....we dont see million
man rallies in support of Hasina on the street, so people are scared and
mostly just hiding in their respective burrows to see which way the winds
will blow.

India? expecting our govt to play a proactive and strong role in 'shaping'
our hemisphere in a favourable win-win direction is just not on.

if the islamists take over tomorrow with BA's tacit approval, all we will do is whine here and slink away.

By providing enough support to her overtly or covertly to avoid a situation where she is forced to back track from her commitment to put them on trial.

^I think she is not in a position to let the BDR murderers get away even if she wanted. The killings were not only of military men but of civilians too. There will be immense pressure to give all or most of the accused death sentences.

The pakis could have pulled this off to divert attention and create another dynamic with security implications for India. Maybe cause us to do a re-think and a pause viz the Mumbai response (which I am convinced is coming in spades).

However I would prefer that GoI keep its mouth shut if its plans include "petitions and appeals to the international community" followed by the dreaded Dossier. Indians and the international community together have suffered enough.
