^^ Enough Chankian folks here to explain every "master-stroke" of GoI right from Nehru going to UN to Shimla agreement to the famous SeS agreement  . Please give it some time and it will appear, partha-ji.

Meanwhile, TSP-ian being , well, a TSP-ian:
Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland has lashed out at "racist comments" directed at Muslim Fawad Ahmed after the leg-spinner asked not to wear a kit displaying the logo of beer brand VB.

Pakistan-born Ahmed, who became an Australian citizen in July after his application was fast-tracked, did not have the logo on his shirt during his international debut in last week's T20 matches against England.

It emerged on Tuesday that he had "expressed discomfort with the conflict this created for him, due to his religious beliefs".

Cricket Australia agreed with his request to wear an unbranded shirt, but this sparked critical comments on the Cricket Australia website and other social media.

^No P ji ,
i guess no one knows those chankian reasons especially since even you can't fathom them.
I for one think that its plain neglect and callousness on the part of the successive govts we had since then.

BTW we should have a Vikram Betaal Q & A thread .

13:36 LIVE! Top Hizbul Mujahideen leader Talib Lali arrested in J-K: Just in: Hizbul Mujahideen top Talib Lall arrested in Srinagar. He is wanted in many attacks on security personnel and civilians. This is the third big arrest after LeT bomb-maker Abdul Karim Tunda and IM boss Yasin Bhatkal.

Lali was arrested along with two other suspects from Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir after a brief exchange of fire with the forces.

A native of Margigul, Ajas, in Bandipora, Talib Lali was one of the longest surviving Hizbul terrorist in the valley with deep rooted contacts in the terror network that works on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan.

Lali (41), also known as Waseem and Abu Umer, was allegedly involved in procuring regular and systematic funding from across the border for Hizbul, to promote terrorist activities in India.

The funding from across the border was allegedly being routed through Jammu & Kashmir Affectees Relief Trusts (JKART), a frontal organization of HM, reports said.-- Zee News

Ramana, I agree with you here. That feeding time is over as far as Cohen is concerned. Besides, PRC is a "better" regional partner than the pakis for India. And I am not just talking trade. If and when PRC sees an end to the so-called benefits the pakis provide them, then its sayonara, baby (don't call me). That day is not far off when the pakis start to become more of a liability than the asset they claim to be.
I think we must begin to look at China & Pak as one entity as Pak is getting integrated into China. The rate of assimilation will only grow faster after c. 2014 and more so after the Gwadar-Kashgar link opens up.

Rhetorically speaking, it may be easier to make up with China, but it is practically impossible. Cohen is carrying his nation's agenda which wants us to settle Pakistan's 'enduring hostility' with us on Pakistan's terms so that the US once again dreams of reaching the 1950s levels of relationship with Pakistan. Hence he is suggesting to us that settling issues with Pakistan is easier than with China. It is easy to guess who the Indian politician was who he claims was so perceptive. It has to be a person who is carrying the incumbent ruling elite's agenda of 'uninterrupted and uninterruptible' peace talks. So, it appears that the two representatives of the respective governments have already agreed on the way forward.

The Pakistanis, OTOH, are playing their usual double game. If they acted as a bridge between the US and PRC in 1971, they are playing a different game today between the same two countries. The US needs many partners for its agenda in Asia which is part of its larger goal of resurrecting its rapidly waning hegemon status and keep in check the rapidly rising status of the wannabe hegemon. It wants to buy India very cheaply and India does not seem to understand its own clout. The US has been successfully equating India and Pakistan through its emissaries like Cohen even while claiming it has de-hyphenated it. Whether India likes it or not, India is looked up to by all Asian countries that have disputes with China or are justifiably fearful of it. Look at the strategic partnerships that have developed between India and other countries such as South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Afghanistan among others within the last two decades. We have defence agreements and conduct joint military exercises with all these countries apart from Mongolia, Indonesia, Myanmar. Even Saudi Arabia has developed a deference for us from the strident noises it used to make in the 1990s in OIC sessions. India has been, and rightly so, frequently compared to Hanuman and the disappointment is we are still awaiting an awakening to realize our own potential.

Pakistan is not going to be satisfied with even the gift of Kashmir. China is not, at least in the near future, going to stop using Pakistan against us even as they slowly expand their frontier into Pakistan. With both China and Pakistan, irredentism alone is not the problem for India. Ideology, in the case of Pakistan, and a desire for global domination and influence, in the case of China will maintain the conflictual relationship for many decades to come. After 16 rounds of talks with China over nearly two decades, we are no closer, as China is even unwilling to exchange with us any documentation on what its perception of where the borders lay. As the Afghan denouement happens, China & Pakistan would come even closer. We do not see any strains developing in this relationship.

Even if we want to 'make up' with one or both of them, they may be unwilling to extend their hand because they believe that they have all the cards. In any case, such a move is fraught with only even more disaster for us.

How credible is this report, is this another one of those bogus revelations that would make the terrorist generals in Rawilpindi laugh their asses off? Reason I say this is because this Asma is a "useful idiot" in TSPA/ISI/US's PR arsenal when it comes to India. No doubt, she has some strong words for TSPA, but notice that she sticks to standard TSP formula of equal equal. Any "moderate" TSP RAPE's criticism of TSP is always under the equal equal framework. Their standard refrain is "South Asia" this or that. And of course, we on BR know that as long as its equal equal, it suits TSPA and ISI just fine because it reduces India to TSP's level, and whatever crimes TSPA/ISI have perpetrated against India are then whitewashed and India has to sit and negotiate with a gun pointed to its head.

Did India's so called PM, MMSJi, not go ballistic and furious and perhaps lost a month's sleep because some lowly Indian immigration official had the audacity to examine Asma Jehangir's visa papers on one of her pappi jhappi jaunts to grace UnDyTV or Hindustan Times or India Today summits on "South Asia's" role in the world?

I see it differently. This is a big kick to TSPA's behind. Asma Jehangir was definitely a target because of her scathing criticism of TSPA/ISI. Recall that during this same period TSPA/ISI bumped off Saleem Sehzad Chaudhary, among many others.

IMF approves $6.7 bn loan for Pakistan
The IMF executive board authorised a three-year arrangement, making an initial disbursement of $540 million available to the Pakistani authorities, the IMF said in a statement.

The remaining amount will be evenly paid out over the duration of the program, subject to the completion of quarterly reviews, the Washington-based global lender said, adding that adherence to the program would likely encourage financial resources from other donors.

He said the raid was executed by Saudi Special Forces who came on four helicopters from Saudi military bases in Raiwind.

The helicopters then landed on the Margala Hills in Islamabad. On the lush hills, Saudi soldiers disembarked from the copters, got on camels and rode all the way to Murree in broad daylight.

<snip>

According to the Pakistan’s security agencies, the Saudis then rode their camels into one of the hotel’s kitchens and fired teargas shells.

This way they smoked out the chefs, cooks and other kitchen staff out into the open. From these, a Saudi commander got hold of a fat, hairy chef with an untidy beard.

The Saudi commander looked at the chef and compared his face with a photograph he was carrying. He asked: ‘Al-Jarara?’ To which the chef was reported to have said: “No, al-chicken jalfrezi. Also make very tasty mutton kebabs.”

Drone strikes do not fall under judiciary's domain, rules SC
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed an appeal against US drone attacks in the tribal areas of the country on the grounds that the issue was not for the judiciary to resolve.

The Supreme Court said that the issue of drone strikes was related to the foreign policy, defense and security of the country and did not come under the judiciary’s domain.

<snip>

The petition demanded that if the nuclear arsenal in the country was incapable of protecting Pakistan and was instead a threat to its survival, it should be sold to the highest bidder in the international market or be kept in Iran’s safe custody.

US intelligence reveals Pakistan plot to kill human rights activist Asma Jahangir
DIA notes that such a plot 'would result in an international and domestic backlash as the ISI is already under significant criticism for intimidation and extra-judicial killings'
Elements within Pakistan’s security establishment plotted to kill the celebrated human rights campaigner Asma Jahangir, according to a leaked US intelligence report.

US agencies discovered in May 2012 that unidentified Pakistani officers were hatching a plan that involved recruiting militants to attack her while she was on a visit to neighbouring India or else “militants or criminals” to kill her while she was in Pakistan.

The details of the US intelligence report appear to confirm claims made last summer by Ms Jahangir, a leading lawyer and campaigner and a former president of the country’s Supreme Court Bar Association, that she had learned of a plot against her from a “a responsible and highly credible” source.

“It’s not news but it’s chilling nevertheless to have it confirmed by an independent source,” Ms Jahangir told The Independent on Wednesday, speaking during a visit to London.

In a series of television appearances in June last year, Mr Jahangir said she believed elements within the security establishment wanted to silence her because of critical remarks she had made about the “brutal tactics” used to suppress ethnic unrest in Balochistan province.

At the time, 44 prominent members of Pakistan’s civil society released a statement condemning the threat against her. “This is not a conspiracy against one individual alone; it is obviously a plot against Pakistan’s future as a democratic state,” it said.

Ms Jahangir said on Wednesday that last summer the then prime minister and president contacted the head of the military about the threat to her. “But we never got a satisfactory answer. We were unable to get to the bottom of it,” she said.

Details of the Pakistani plot were contained within the summary of a top-secret report by the US Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) that was leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to the Washington Post.

The report said it did not know whether Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency had given its approval for the plot to proceed. However, it speculated that the ISI could have been motivated kill Ms Jahangir “to quiet public criticism of the military”.

The US agency noted that such a plot “would result in an international and domestic backlash as the ISI is already under significant criticism for intimidation and extra-judicial killings”.

Ms Jahangir, who formerly headed the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, has long received threats from various elements within the country. She has been a staunch defender of rights for campaigners and journalists and has taken on many of high-profile cases that have involved powerful interests.

Is Karachi burning?

From Nightwatch:
Pakistan: Karachi is in a law and order crisis. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday vowed not to politicize a planned solution to restore peace to Karachi and hoped others would cooperate with the federal government in doing so.

Sharif arrived in Karachi on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday he is scheduled to preside over a special federal cabinet session on the deteriorating law and order situation. The cabinet is expected to decide on a planned targeted operation against criminal gangs and armed militias of political groups, whose turf war has ruined law and order in Karachi.

Comment: Last week politicians debated a proposal to place Karachi under military control for a large scale clean-up operation. The senior police officer for Karachi, however, claimed today that the police have the situation under control, but that is being understood as an effort to protect his authority.

Karachi is generally ungovernable. The federal government intervenes when criminal activity and armed political activity, which often are connected, reduce the revenue from trade and port operations. Federal clean-up operations have come and gone without affecting the foundation of graft and violence. They serve to reduce violent crime to a more tolerable level so that economic activity can occur with some predictability.
Will this benefit Dawood Ibrahim?

Currently Karachi has:
- MQM and opposition ISI origin gangs
- Afghan war refugee origin gangs now under Im the Dim
- Dawood Ibrahim gangs

Fall of another contractor : Chinese firm pulls out of IP pipeline project
ISLAMABAD : A Chinese firm which offered financing of $500 million for Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline has pulled out of the project after Pakistan government expressed its unwillingness to extend the bid validity period.

“After the Chinese firm’s exit from the project, the government is now banking on Iran to fully fund the laying of Pakistan’s portion of the pipeline,” a source told The Express Tribune.

Apparently its a beer logo that ahmed objected to since it bothered his "conscience" and felt "discomfort". I wonder if he will still accept the match playing fees if it is partly underwritten by the beer company? Or what if he wins (go forbid) the man of the match award? Will he accept the check for a million bucks sponsored by the beer company? Pakiness never fails to amaze or shock me.

anupmisra Ji :

1. I have seen no evidence of bids being invited for the Pipe Line.

2. The Chinese have pulled out - possibly due to US Threat of Sanctions. Pakistanis are trying to save their H & D by stating that they have not extended the "Validity" Period i.e. in the face of overwhelming odds Pakis did it on their own term.

One is reminded of the Mumbai saying Makad Manots Majhi.... i.e. Bundar Bolay Meri ....!

Meantime back at the Ranch :

Naval officer among 14 killed as violence continues unabated
Karachi : As many as 14 people, including a naval officer and a Rangers personnel, were killed in Karachi as violence continued unabated in the metropolis despite Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s efforts to bring normalcy back to the city.

Rememeber The Poaq Abdfool and Umm Rat of last Month
Man arrested near Pak parliament recruited youths for LeT
Asss lamba d: A man who brought the Pakistani capital to a standstill last month by opening fire near Parliament was trained in a LeT camp and helped recruit Indian youths for the banned terror group in the Middle East. Malik Sikandar Hayat, 50, was arrested after he drove to a boulevard in the heart of Islamabad on August 15 and began firing with two locally made automatic weapons. Even before he was arrested, Pakistani media had reported his links with the Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Hayat was motivated to join the LeT after watching a video made by the terror group while living in a Middle Eastern country in 1996. He receive "initial orientation training" at a LeT centre near a mosque in that country, The News daily quoted an intelligence report as saying. Though the newspaper did not name the Middle Eastern country, several reports in the Pakistani media have said that Hayat lived in the UAE for many years.
The LeT centre was managed by two Pakistani nationals and Hayat met senior LeT leaders Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, Abdul Rehman Makki and Rasheed Turrabi in 1996. In 1998-99, Hayat came to Pakistan and did a three-month training at LeT’s Al-Aqsa Camp at Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. At the time, the camp was run by Commander Saifullah Qasoori, currently based in Karachi. Hayat visited the camp four to five times for short courses. After the training, he went back to the Middle Eastern country where he lived with his Arab wife, Fatima.
t was during this period that he again met Makki and other LeT activists. Hayat has confessed to Pakistani officials that his main assignment during those days was to recruit youths from India, arrange their travel to Muzaffarabad for training on fictitious identities and launch them back into India. e was assisted by four travel agents, including Pakistani national Mahboob, who ran a travel agency. Abdul Razzaq from the Indian city of Hyderabad was the focal person who coordinated with Hayat for training and launching LeT activists. Hayat claimed he and other cadres "launched 50 to 60 LeT activists into India" but did not disclose their identities. The Pakistani intelligence report claimed Hayat double-crossed both the intelligence agencies of the Middle Eastern country and Pakistan and LeT. hile working with Middle Eastern intelligence operatives to identify LeT activists, Hayat never gave them pertinent information and continued to work for the terror group, the intelligence report said. he report further said Hayat's son Yousaf Al-Jasmi, a foreign national, got commando training in LeT's Al Aqsa Camp in Muzaffarabad in 2002. n 2001, Hayat was detained by authorities in the Middle Eastern country for involvement in suspicious activities during a swoop conducted after the 9/11 terror attacks in the US. The charges levelled against Hayat at that time included having connections with militant groups and seeking funding and support for them. fter returning to Pakistan, Hayat changed his name to Muhammad Sikandar and was facilitated in the change by Ashraf, who managed finances for the LeT at a Jamaat-ud-Dawa office near Yateem Khana in Lahore. In 2003-04, Hayat re-entered the Middle Eastern country with his new name. "It was this period that I and Abdul Razzaq (Indian national, who was later arrested in Iran in 2006 on the information of some LeT activist), wanted all LeT people to move from Kashmir to Afghanistan and wage jihad against American forces," Hayat was quoted as saying by the intelligence report. "However, LeT leadership, under the influence of Pakistani Agencies, refused to do this. This disappointed me and I started to part my ways with LeT." In 2010, intelligence operatives of the Middle Eastern country told Hayat that his services were no longer required and he moved back to Pakistan with his second wife Kunwal and two minor children.

A Wazibul Cul-Nutt Poaq
FAIRFAX, VA, US: This is with reference to your editorial “Line of fire” (September 4). I believe that a major reset is necessary in Pakistan’s Kashmir policy. As explained in my recent piece published in The Express Tribune, “A possible basis for settling the Kashmir dispute” (August 17), the interests of both India and Pakistan regarding Kashmir have become surprisingly similar as time has moved on and the situation on the ground has changed since 1947.Both India and Pakistan want to keep control over their parts of Kashmir. Both have hopefully realised after three wars that they cannot get the other part. Two major opinion surveys conducted on both sides of the border in Kashmir over the period 2007-2010 have shown that less than 10 per cent ( real figure is closer to five per cent) of the Muslim population of Indian Kashmir would like to join Pakistan. Likewise, Pakistani Kashmiris do not want to join India. Therefore, it seems, the Kashmiris in Occupied Kashmir are not as keen to join Pakistan as the Azad Kashmiris are for them to do so.
Given these realities, Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmiris will lose control over Pakistani Kashmir and gain very little in return if an independent Kashmir were to be formed. It is, therefore, not in the interest of Pakistan or Pakistani Kashmiris to press for a plebiscite or an independent Kashmir. India has always been unwilling to consider an independent Kashmir as an option anyway.Since even the Muslim Kashmiris in India do not want to join Pakistan, and the Pakistani Kashmiris do not want to join India, a division along the Line of Control, i.e., a formalisation of the status quo, is in the best interest of both the countries. Please note, I am not saying that this is the best deal that Pakistan can get but it should be the primary thrust of Pakistan’s Kashmir policy since the alternative is not in the interest of Pakistan.Ali Hashim,

any such formalization of LoC is victory for Pak. they will proudly proclaim they made the Kafir back down from his claims. then starts the next phase anyway regardless of "formalization". the internal Kashmiri Islamists will also receive a shot in the arm. they will be emboldened.

does this Paki really believe Indians are that brainless?

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s higher Judiciary formally joins in with the uniformed Jihadi’s of the Military in making no effort to thwart the frequent violations of sovereignty by US Drones  by rejecting a petition to stop drone attacks.

The petition against the drone strikes filed by a group of lawyers, called Wukala Mahaz Barai Tahafuz Dastoor demanding that “federation be directed to command the armed forces of Pakistan to defend the country against external aggression posed by the American forces under the cover of NATO”.

“An authoritative declaration be made that USA is an enemy state and measures be taken under the domestic law to expel diplomatic personnel and seize their assets,” is dismissed by the Supreme Court.

The rejected petition had also "demanded that if the nuclear arsenal in the country was incapable of protecting Pakistan and was instead a threat to its survival, it should be sold to the highest bidder in the international market or be kept in Iran’s safe custody." :rotfl: :

Drone strikes do not fall under judiciary's domain, rules SC

Really? IIRC, former PM of Pak was Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and he's Sunni, as far as I can tell. Perhaps there are exceptions in the Naqvi name as well.

AFAIK, a 'Syed' is a descendant of PM. That is what Gilani is and yes he is a Sunni Brelvi.

Indian Envoy Calls on Pakistan Official - Meena Menon, The Hindu
Dr. Raghavan, in his turn, said that while India was keen to resume engagement, the incidents along the LoC had raised doubts over Pakistan’s sincerity. He pointed out that the upcoming Mumbai visit of the Pakistan judicial commission would help forge a common policy on combating terrorism and removing global misperceptions.

Why should the Indian envoy say the bolded portion above ? A mere visit is not going to change perceptions if one has gone through the farce and the pretense that all Pakistani governments, irrespective of their nature, are putting up in the 26/11 issue. Above all, India does not care to point out 'global misperceptions' to Pakistan; neither must we care about such perceptions or misperceptions. Our interests must be served. Pakistan had long concluded that Pakistan's problems on the world stage are just a question of image, that there is fundamentally and structurally no real problem within the country, and that an image makeover would resolve the problem. So, Pakistan does not need to be reminded of 'global misperceptions'.

And, what is this common policy of 'combating terror' ? When did India agree to have a joint mechanism with Pakistan to fight terror ? This is an alarming development.

The Indian Envoy is "Obeying" His Master (MMS) who "Obeys" His "She Who Must be Obeyed" who gets Orders from Washington D.C.

Simple!

Jammat-ud-Dawah to launch anti-India drive from tomorrow
JuD has given a call to workers and other political and religious parties to gather in Rawalpindi on Friday to put up an 'impressive' anti-India show by taking out the 'Defai (Defend) Pakistan Carvan' rally from there to Islamabad.

The JuD has been mobilising its activists across the country for the 'success' of the rally and according to it thousands of its supporters will attend it.

JuD chief Saeed has invited the leaders of all mainstream parties including ruling PML-N, PPP, PTI, PML-Q, JUI-F, JUI-S, MQM and Jamaat-i-Islami to the rally.
