1. Saudi has a lot of E-W connections between its seaboards but N-S connection is weak; maybe this corridor will strengthen that, and that is in Saudi's interest.
2. Surprised also that we invited Egypt and now we are coming up with a plan to get around Suez.
3. American enthusiasm would have been for the following reasons (i) alternative to Suez and (ii) making them relevant again in Saudi-UAE relations - which recently China seems to have monopolized.
4. Eventually I would like to see Oman brought into the corridor. I'm surprised Oman was left out given our close ties with them, and them being entirely relevant here. Maybe corridor was explicitly routed through UAE and not any Omani port to keep UAE-Saudis together.
5. More practically, Suez is still king. Two transshipments and a rail transit are going to be a hard sell. Only beneficiaries will be subcontinental workers manning the ports in Saudi/UAE.
6. What is interesting is the realization of complementary strengths, tacit admission of weaknesses and converging interests. We have the people (which today is a key resource), UAE/Saudi has the money but need to invest well for the future, Europe/US has the technology & experience. We need the investment and expertise, UAE/Saudi needs people & technology, Europe/US needs the supply chain & green credentials.
Image

More importantly, no more candle kissing and including Pakis, Turkey, CAS, etc here. The key here is the road and rail network between Dubai and Haifa. Perhaps that part is either underdeveloped or does not exist today. IMO this route will decongest the Suez route. Crossing Suez takes around 12-16 hours at the rate of 50 vessels a day. So if this new route gets more efficient and cost-effective, more trade can happen at a faster rate. Pakis should not think they are the limiting factor for our connectivity and the Chinese will have to deal with a terrorist-infested, weather-weary corridor until they make peace with us.

I'd be surprised if Egypt wasn't invited, given Modi's "win for all" thinking. Having the competitor/established player on your own team is a big plus. Egypt is an important gateway to the interior of Africa, and also desires more trade options for its own goods. The Egyptian president Al-Sisi has had
multiple meetings with Modi over the last year or more.

During the meeting, the senators expressed concerns that India's might veto Pakistan's entry into BRICS. However, the caretaker foreign minister played down these apprehensions, saying that any member resorting to such a veto would risk its own status within the group.
What kind of la la land do these Pakis live in? How does India vetoing Pakistan's entry into BRICS risk its own status within the group? If that was possible what kind of a group would that be? Why would there even be veto in such a group? India has already vetoed Algeria from joining BRICS.

Bhai, that will happen when we start working with North Africa, but right now success of this ME corridor is important.

What you're suggesting sounds like scope creep! This often happens in the IT sector, multiple seemingly good ideas get bundled together and before we know it will turn into something big and will not produce results when we want them. For example, a small 2bhk house will turn into 4 storey building with ample parking space, a swimming pool and park.

Once ME corridor is a success, the linkage of North Africa will start and Asia Africa Growth Corridor will help build railway in the South Africa region to connect with Asia (Indian Ports).

Congratulations to Pakistan for winning the Asia cup match against India. India scored 356, Pakistan scored 1024 runs (1 Pakistani run = 8 Indian runs. Pakistan are great at running)

To remember this occasion today should be celebrated as defense of cricket day.

Edit: reports are coming in that Pakistan might not have won this match. Sources within Pakistan say that these were non-board players, who were radicalized by the IPL issue. The actual cricket board players would have played much better.

Will US supply bakistan with F16s armed with AMRAAMs agent DDT to take on this latest threat?

Yawn - Cluster spray unleashed against whitefly in cotton belt
Worried by prospects of spread of a deadly whitefly attack, pest management teams of the Punjab Agriculture Department have resorted to cluster spray as experts estimate that, so far, around half of the standing crop in hotspot areas may have been damaged.

A spokesperson for the department said drones and high-pressure spray machines have been deployed to spray the affected as well as surrounding areas because the whitefly takes refuge in adjoining fields to escape the affects of pesticide.

On Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Sahoo, as well as the top hierarchy of the extension and pest management wings, were present in the cotton belt to oversee the operation against the pest.

Dr Saghir Ahmed, former director of the Central Cotton Research Institute, said that the whitefly attack in hotspot areas had crossed the economic threshold mark, as around 100 bugs per leaf are being observed and no pesticide could recover the affected plants.

Ginning factories, meanwhile, are reporting a 50pc drop in the arrival of cotton and a 15pc cut in yield.

Local sources confirmed to Dawn that around 20pc of cotton crop production areas have been completely destroyed by the whitefly attack while the remaining 10-20pc area is under mild attack and the situation can be improved once choppers, drones, and power sprayers jointly start operations in the affected areas.

On the other hand, farmers termed the measures taken by the agriculture and revenue departments regarding the prevention of whitefly attack as insufficient. They said that it was not a lack of canal water or hot and humid environment, but substandard seeds and “fake” pesticides that caused the growth and attack of whiteflies.

Speaking to Dawn, several farmer leaders, including the general secretary of the Punjab Kisan Board Bahawalnagar, said that with the connivance of the administration, substandard seeds and “fake” agricultural medicines were first provided to farmers and later compensation was given when the crops suffered from diseases.

Yawn - International Hockey Federation strips Pakistan of Olympic qualifier hosting rights over govt interference
In a major setback for Pakistan’s national game, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) withdrew the hosting rights of the Olympic qualifying round from the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on Tuesday.

“The FIH communicated this decision to the Pakistan Hockey Federation, citing non-cooperation and interference in the affairs of the PHF [by the government] as the primary reasons for the withdrawal. The FIH has withdrawn [the] hosting rights from Pakistan due to serious concerns,” said a PHF press release issued on Tuesday.

“It is a disappointing decision for Pakistan hockey as we had done hard work to get the event from the FIH. US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome visited Gwadar and reaffirmed the United States’s commitment to the people of Balochistan.

According to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Pakistan, he discussed development, trade, and the future development of commercial links in the area during his visit to Gwadar.

He has previously discussed the US’s assistance for the development of Balochistan through trade and investments with members of the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and political leaders.

The Pak-America Green Alliance framework was one of the main subjects of discussion at these sessions. They also looked at different city-wide development initiatives and investigated Gwadar's potential as a regional and economic centre.
Interesting. What could be the reason for such a visit? Is US seriously getting involved in Balochistan? Is it to keep China in check or does US want to establish a presence in Balochistan for a future war with Iran? At least this visit shows not all is well with CPEC.

Pakistan: Head of Anti-Narcotics Force of Lahore Police turns out to be an underworld don who was involved in drug smuggling to India, via drones.

He was dismissed from service six times and suspended from service 45 times for his alleged involvement in illegal activities, mostly related to drug trafficking cases.

But he still managed to become head of Anti-Narcotics Force of Lahore Police.

He was living in a 4-kanal villa in Defence Housing Authority Lahore and owned seven more houses in the DHA.

Officials also traced 125 costly cars purchased by him during his police service in Lahore.

It's estimated that the worth of the alleged illegal properties of Mazhar alias Mazhari was over PKR 2 billion.

Ex-US Ambassador given three years probation, heavy fine
Olson served as US ambassador to Pakistan from 2012 to 2015 and was embroiled in a number of scandals
Web Desk, September 16, 2023

Former US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson on Friday was sentenced to three-year probation and ordered to pay $93,400 for lying in ethics paperwork and violating so-called "revolving door" laws by lobbying for Qatar within one year of retiring from federal service.
"I have paid a very heavy price for the mistakes that I made," 63-year-old Olson told Judge G Michael Harvey ahead of the sentencing, adding that he was "professionally ostracised" and had lost his reputation and income.
In the Friday hearing the prosecutor accused Olson — who served as Pakistan's ambassador from 2012 to 2015 and was embroiled in a number of scandals — of continuously denying accountability by trying to put his crimes down as "paperwork errors".
Among the scandals Olson was involved in but not tried for, were allegations of multiple extramarital affairs and his decision to withhold four pieces of diamond jewellery worth $60,000 during his stint as the head of the US Consulate in Dubai.

ISIS using travelling trainers to teach IED-making in states
Rahul Chhabra, September 17, 2023
Interrogation of arrested ISIS operatives has revealed that they were given special training in making IEDs.

New Delhi
Terror organisation Islamic State (ISIS) has switched to a new tactic of recruiting “roaming trainers” to make improvised explosive device (IED). The trainers shift base continuously and impart explosive-making training to sleeper cells in different states.
Questioning of arrested ISIS operatives Imran Khan and Mohd Yunus Saki, who fell into the net of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during an investigation into the 2022 seizure of explosives in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh district, has revealed that the duo from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh was given special training in IED making.
After acquiring the skill to make IED, the two organised several training camps for members of the terror group’s sleeper cells in Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. They also had Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra on their radar.
NIA sources said Imran Khan was the mastermind of the IED seizure in Chittorgarh last year. The IED had been brought there to impart bomb-making training to recruits in the desert state. However, security agencies got wind of their plans and both Khan and Saki fled to Maharashtra.
Investigation into the Chittorgarh IED case led NIA to ISIS-inspired terror outfit “SUFA”. According to NIA, Saki and Imran Khan were actively engaged in spreading the ISIS ideology before their arrests from Maharashtra. NIA had earlier seized explosives and various components used in the fabrication of IEDs from the possession of the accused.
Investigations had revealed that the two men had procured the materials and substances for fabricating the IEDs to spread terror and mayhem in Rajasthan and elsewhere in India, said NIA.
The arrested duo was highly trained in IED fabrication and were also involved in training their co-accused to make such devices at the poultry farm of the mastermind, Imran Khan. The poultry farm was attached by the NIA last month.

Pakistan grapples with unmet expectations from Taliban
Maj Gen Jagatbir Singh, VSM (RETD), September 17, 2023

Pakistan has witnessed 18 suicide bombings this year, surpassing 15 in 2022 as militant outfits exploit the country’s vulnerabilities.
On Sunday, 30 July, a suicide bomber killed at least 54 people and wounded nearly 200 others at a political rally in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Malakand Division, bordering Afghanistan. The event was for Muslim cleric Fazlur Rehman of the hard-line Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), a religio-political party, a member of the government’s ruling coalition and a longtime supporter of the Taliban. Rehman was not present, but the party’s Khar Ameer Maulana Ziaullah and his 22-year-old son were among those killed.
The Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP), a regional affiliate of the main Islamic State organisation, claimed responsibility for the assault, through its Amaq News Agency channel. The attack was part of the group’s ongoing war against the democratic system, which it believes contradicts Sharia law. Although it may seem odd for an Islamist extremist group to target a party that shares similar ideologies, the reality is that the ISKP is more fanatical in its outlook than the Afghan Taliban and their allies. It has a history of political assassinations for not instilling “a strict enough interpretation” of Islamic rules.
Pakistan’s then Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned those responsible as terrorists who “targeted those who speak for Islam, the Quran and Pakistan.” “The terrorists are enemies of Pakistan, we will eliminate them from the face of existence,” he added.
Exactly a month later, a “motorcycle-borne suicide bomber exploded himself on a military convoy” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu. Nine soldiers including Naib Subedar Sanobar Ali were killed and five others injured. This was the biggest single-day terror death toll that the military has seen. Prior to this, ten soldiers died in a “fire raid” in Balochistan’s Kech area last February.
PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar condemned the attack and called such acts “utterly reprehensible” and said, “Pakistan stands resolute against such terror”.
The latest incident, on 6 September, was a large-scale cross-border incursion where a large band of Pakistani Taliban (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP) militants reportedly crossed over and attacked Pakistani positions in Torkham, Chitral before being pushed back into Afghanistan. Chitral lies in a strategically sensitive area—bordering Afghanistan and separated from Tajikistan by the Wakhan Corridor. China’s Xinjiang is also in the vicinity.

https://theintercept.com/2023/09/17/pak ... -arms-imf/
SECRET PAKISTANI ARMS sales to the U.S. helped to facilitate a controversial bailout from the International Monetary Fund earlier this year, according to two sources with knowledge of the arrangement, with confirmation from internal Pakistani and American government documents. The arms sales were made for the purpose of supplying the Ukrainian military — marking Pakistani involvement in a conflict it had faced U.S. pressure to take sides on.
To win the loan, Pakistan had been told by the IMF it had to meet certain financing and refinancing targets related to its debt and foreign investment — targets that the country was struggling to meet. The weapons sales came to the rescue, with the funds garnered from the sale of munitions for Ukraine going a long way to cover the gap.....Lu told Khan at the May 23 meeting that the U.S. had cleared payment for the Pakistani munitions production and would tell the IMF confidentially about the program. Lu acknowledged the Pakistanis believed the arms contributions to be worth $900 million, which would help to cover a remaining gap in the financing required by the IMF, pegged at roughly $2 billion. What precise figure the U.S. would relay to the IMF remained to be negotiated, he told Khan.....An IMF spokesperson denied the institution was pressured but did not comment on whether it was taken into confidence about the weapons program. “We categorically deny the allegation that there was any external pressure on the IMF in one way or another while discussing support to Pakistan,” said IMF spokesperson Randa Elnagar. (Global Ordnance, the firm involved in the arms deal, did not respond to a request for comment.)
