QUETTA: Forty-three people were killed and more than 100 were injured in a bomb attack targeting a Shia Muslim rally in Quetta on Friday.

The bomb appeared to target a rally being held for Al-Quds day, an international annual event held by the Shia community opposing Israel's control of Jerusalem and showing solidarity with Palestinian Muslims.

Obviously, this points to the Mossad.

I am ashamed to report a single, but the score board needs to be kept accurate.

2 killed, 2 injured in Mardan blast

Suppiah saar,
I think it somehow resulted in an overthrow and they almost scored a boundary, but only managed to score a 2. The ball is not dead yet. It could become a four. Maddening confusion out there on the field and as of now the tally is 45/2.

Saar,
it appears that even the Peshawar inswinger turns out to be a single as well.
Cop killed, 3 injured in Peshawar blast
Score is 46/3 now

That gives hope...the scene now shifts to the hospital...

Where is battle between Pakistan and Taliban headed?
The struggle between Pakistan and militants has come under scrutiny again after U.S. charges against the Pakistani Taliban leader and renewed violence as the country struggles to cope with debilitating floods.
1)No changes in strategy
The dynamics of the battle won't change, with the army mounting more offensives and the Taliban hitting back.
Militants may be encouraged to step up attacks because the government and military are preoccupied with flood relief efforts. There is the possibility of attacks on aid workers.
You hit me I hit you. for how long will it continue :?: something like spouses fight but at the end of the day sleep together. :rotfl:
2) More taliban attacks overseas?
Hakimullah Mehsud charged with the plot in CIA base in af pak area. TTP resposnible for times square plot.
Can it cause spectacular attacks?
much will depend on whether it has the finances and connections to global militant groups. It may need deep cooperation with networks like al Qaeda with a track record of spectacular attacks.
3) more pressure on bakis.
Now that Mehsud's profile has been raised by the U.S. charges, the U.S. may push Pakistan to fight the Afghan Taliban and the Pakistani Taliban simultaneously.
Response of pakis-
Pakistan's government would almost certainly resist those demands and argue that the army is already stretched, especially since it has taken a lead role in providing relief to flood victims. and demand massive compensation from Uncle.
Will the spouses who fight each other but sleep together at night ever divorce.
Uncle thinks divorce is easy considering its societal life. it forgets there are societies which think and act differently.
No wonder uncle has lot of failures in non western societies. currently it works because of its massive economy and firepower.

Pity for Bakistani high-drinker in london. One day he is begging for flood aid. next day he is praising media for its role in ponud batoro andolan. Then next day he is angry at "elites" in Bakistan who diverted water to poor villages. On fourth day he is angry on Kirket players . On fifth day he is defending players :(( :((

Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) aims to be Pakistanis' salvation
But it does not have the capacity to establish a big presence -- the devastation was so vast that roads were cut and the only means of transport is helicopter -- so JuD officials say they are trying to make up for this by other, thoughtful, means.
"We don't have the resources to meet their demands or get their houses rebuilt or give compensation for their crops," said Yahya Mujahid, a JuD spokesman, inside the group's headquarters in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.
"So this idea came up ... let's give them this package so that they can forget their problems for at least one day."
most of the volunteers of JuD are foot soldiers. How will they coordinate to reach all parts of pakistan.
1) connect with myraid charities present in different parts
2) TSPA helping them covertly
3) civilian govt(whatever is left) at local level helping them
4) individual landlords/RAPEs helping them either on own or under threat.

How will US help change the pakis- :((
Has helios and TSPA visible support. will this be good enough because the ground staff is by the abduls who dislike uncle.
In effect the amount invested by uncle in the flood relief is negligible in returns. what a waste :!:
On top of it they will have to be ready for the GUBO from the bakis on more money/writing off loans etc.
It is worse than international migraine.

OMG why did uncle ever cast its eye on the land of the pure.

Pakistan accused of politicising flood efforts with 'Benazirabad' plan
The government of Pakistan has been accused of hijacking relief efforts for political ends after it unveiled plans to name new towns built for flood victims "Benazirabad", after the country's former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting of the Pakistan People's Party chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari, husband of the assassinated leader.
However, opposition politicians condemned the idea as an attempt to exploit reconstruction work to raise support for the governing party.

Siddiq-ul-Farooq, a spokesman for the PML-N opposition party, said: "It's a national catastrophe so an apolitical approach is needed. President Zardari should rise above political considerations and should not be using political personalities' names for political gain."

Eight million people are still in desperate need of help, more than a month after torrential monsoon rains swept away roads, bridges and a million homes.

Much of the southern province of Sindh remains under water.

However, relief efforts have been hit by a sluggish response from donors – amid fears that cash may be misused.

The military head of the country's disaster response unit has reported receiving phone calls from prominent politicians demanding aid be delivered to their constituencies or asking for helicopters to rescue their relatives.

Yesterday, the UN warned that funding had "almost stalled" and contributions had raised less than two thirds of $460m needed to keep disease and hunger at bay.

For now, emergency relief remains the priority but the Pakistan government is planning to build 10 or more new towns across the country to help house families made homeless by the floods.

Farhatullah Babar, spokesman for President Zardari, said they would be built with a mixture of public and private cash, and that officials had approached the Asian Development Bank for a loan to help construction.

Each town would house up to 10,000 people.
However, he added that Benazirabad was only one of a number of possible names.
"The final decision has not yet been taken," he said.

Shiv,

Befor ducking for cover. :P

The way your post is worded, some idiot may take it as if you are blaiming India. It must be noted that India has nothing to do with the monstrocity called TSP after 1947.
No actually that was worded deliberately. I have often had a thought that Pakistanis have utilized all the goodness they can get out of being Indic to implement all that is evil. If Pakbarians can claim any "civilization" it is the Indian civilization. And they have claimed it while denying it and used the automatic advantage the remnants of an old civilization in their culture gives them to do the most despicable things. In short they have been devoid of all dharma. Like bait and switch they have hidden behind India and Indians when needed and stuch a finger up India's ass whenever possible.

Gradually, in time, Pakistan needs to be finished.

Pakistan banks at risk from flood impact
Fears are mounting that Pakistan’s flood crisis – so far confined largely to rural areas – will begin to take its toll on the country’s formal economy, undermining the country’s previously strong banking sector.
Moody’s Investor Service, the credit rating agency, has warned that the country’s main banks face the threat of a wave of non-performing loans as the natural disaster undermines Pakistan’s financial fundamentals.
They may also suffer declining profitability as the banks’ management make greater provisions for deteriorating asset quality.
Local economists have predicted a collapse in economic growth from the current 4 per cent to near zero, as well as rising inflation and a near doubling of public spending from the government’s target.
But the damage to cotton farming and the textile industry, one of Pakistan’s main export sectors, is a cause for worry. About 14 per cent of the rated banks’ loan books are devoted to the textile sector.
The banks are also heavily exposed to the government sector, which makes them vulnerable to sovereign shocks, like a natural disaster. Exposure is estimated to be as much as 460 per cent of Tier 1 equity.
silver lining amid gloom
He said the floods, part of a seasonal rainfall pattern across south Asia, would make Pakistan’s land more fertile, and crops higher yielding in the future.

article is rehash of all posted here-
The Pakistani Army says it is providing 58 percent of relief supplies for the flooding, which may affect 20 million people and has damaged more than 1,600 kilometers (994 miles) of roads. Almost 20 percent is coming from the rest of the government, 15 percent from local donors and 8 percent from foreign aid contributions.

Did Pakistan's President Zardari Buy Record Breaking £140 Million London Apartment?
This article is not clear whether dus percenti did it or not. but all the same shows the RAPEs are a breed apart.
Sold at a record-breaking £140 million (nearly $216 million), the six-bedroom apartment comes equipped with entirely bullet-proof windows, a panic room, and Special Air Service security guards, making it a seemingly perfect getaway for an increasingly unpopular leader known for his paranoia.
It's also a bit curious that no other news sources, Pakistani or otherwise, have picked up the story.
If the story is a false account, it will only prove a willingness of one of Pakistan's most revered media outlets to twist the truth for political appeal, in other words, enter into the same sort of occupational corruption it tries to hold the government responsible for.
Asif flayed for ‘140m pounds flat’
He went on to say that the shameless act would have hurt the soul of PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who had vowed to provide Roti, Kapra and Makan to the poor.
He said that the president, not contented with the Surrey Palace, had purchased another expensive flat at a time when he was extending begging bowl for the flood effectees, asking why the international donors give alms and aid to the Zardari-led government.

WITH VAST areas of Pakistan still under water and no end in sight to the country’s misery, the United Nations said yesterday the flow of international aid had ground to a halt.
Charities and UN agencies issued a fresh appeal for funding and warned that thousands of people could still die from disease and hunger.
However, despite the intense need the UN said donations had stalled since the beginning of the week, rising from $274 million to only $291 million – less than two-thirds of the money needed to keep people alive.
this is far from over.
will have to keep a watch on the relief efforts.
In the coming months---
what will be the effect on the psyche of mango bakis and its contribution on rising ethnic tensions/terrorism etc.
how many refugees will attempt to cross rural to urban and out of country--

Shiv-ji,

This is not "from" India. This pestilence has nothing to do with India. It is the product of inc*st relationship between two abrahamic religions on Indian soil to hurt India primarily. The 3.5 b*stards sustain this pestilence with a single objective - to hurt India.

It is natural dharma that this pestilence bites the hand that feeds it.

Pakistan: Floods Fail to Trigger Pro-Army Tide
In a statement of August 22, Hussain declared: "The MQM will openly support the patriotic generals if they take any martial law-type action against corrupt politicians and feudal lords. If these generals can topple political and democratic governments they can also take steps to weed out corrupt politicians and feudal lords."
MQM is itself a partner of the current poak govt.
The coalition leader, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has just 126 members (out of a total of 342) in the National Assembly and was only able to cobble together a government by roping in the MQM, the Pashtun Awami National Party (AMP), the Jamaat-ul-Islami (Fazlur Rahman) or JUI (F) and independents.
Hussain was a beneficiary of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) issued by the Musharraf regime which made it possible for former Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif to return home and contest a general election again.
Under the highly controversial NRO, Hussain had the highest number of cases withdrawn against him - 72, with 31 charges of murder and 11 of murder attempts. Sattar stood the second - with 23 cases, including five charges of murder and four of murder attempts withdrawn.
Why did Hussain call for martial like law or army take over?
1)
a warning to political rivals, including the PPP, trying to challenge the MQM's monopoly on Karachi politics. A demographic change underway for some time, with a Sindhi influx diluting the Mohajir majority in the State capital, has weakened the party's domination in the port city. Hussain's may be a message that the MQM could utilize the military to play its political game.
local Karachi politics
2)
Hussain may lend credence to speculative reports that the federal government is going to be set aside soon in view of the mismanagement of the floods, either by the Supreme Court or under military pressure or both. The MQM, then, may just be keeping its options open.
The only support for Hussain, from outside the MQM, has come from the Tehreek-i-Insaf (Movement for Justice), headed by former cricketer Imran Khan. Talking to a television channel, Khan said the other day that his party would "back military rule for the stability of the country." The channel did not recall that the same Khan had, not long ago, described Hussain as the country's "top-most terrorist."
Politics make for strange bed fellows.

what does TSPA say- nothing because of
Analysts attribute its unenthusiastic response to Hussain's call to a couple of factors. In the first place, the armed forces and its chief, Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, have their hands too full with anti-insurgency operations to take on the tougher task Hussain seeks to set them. Secondly, Kayani or any other general may not be excited at the prospect of courting the humiliating experience of Musharraf now in exile. :((
Meanwhile Gola
would consider serving a second term as Pakistan's president if he felt he could make a valuable contribution. "If Pakistan is in a nosedive, or about to self-destruct, if I can contribute something to rectify the situation, certainly I will."

TFT Edit - Najam Sethi
Stinking scandal

A stinking international cricket scandal is all that Pakistan needs as it grapples with a negative image problem abroad that is dampening efforts to raise funds for the rehabilitation of over 20 million people displaced by the worst floods in living memory.

A sting operation by a popular British rag has laid Pakistan low by exposing the extent of greed and anarchy on and off the cricket ground at home and abroad. The bitter irony is that the anti-Pakistan sting was conducted by a Pak-Brit reporter whose journalist father immigrated to the UK from Lahore many years ago. :rotfl:

The unmitigated tragedy is that a rising new star on the firmament of international cricket – Mohammad Amer, 18 – is both an unwitting victim and witting perpetrator. The premeditated no-ball that he bowled, along with Mohammad Asif, cannot be described as a match-fixing incident because it had no bearing on the fate of the match. But it is at the centre of a multi-million dollar storm of spot-fixing in sport that is a gambling crime in the UK.

The incident has rocked the Pakistan Cricket Team which is spilling over with talent(Yes, match-fixing talent) , its new captain Salman Butt on whom many hopes were pinned, and the Pakistan Cricket Board whose bumbling chairman Ijaz Butt should have stepped aside a long time ago. Worse, it has put a serious question mark not only on the integrity of the 82 first class international matches played by Pakistan in the last 30 months but also, critically, on the credibility of two 20/20 and five ODIs – which are worth tens of millions of pounds in gate receipts and TV rights – that are scheduled to be played in the UK over the next two weeks.

This is not the first time that cricket has been soured by match or spot fixing. Since the 1990s, it has become a mega-bucks industry. The ICC’s Lord Condon claims that gambling bets of over $1 billion may normally be placed on a single day of a key One Day World Cup match! Among Test class cricketers tarred by match-fixing, ball tampering and assorted charges in the last fifteen years are nine from Pakistan, seven from India, three from South Africa and two from Australia. Unproven charges have been leveled against many others. Britain is the only country that has not been infected.

Pakistan’s cricket has been in dire straits for many years. Generals, bureaucrats, diplomats, politicians and cricketers have, in turns, lorded over the Pakistan Cricket Board. Barring a couple of notables, all have been more or less corrupt, nepotistic or incompetent. Domestically, cricket is not structured on fierce competing provincial or regional rivalries that are conducive to the combative spirit of the high stakes game as in England or Australia and now in India. Street smart amateurs with unbounded talent streak across the cricket firmament from time to time while professionally trained and groomed youngsters are rare. Anarchy rather than discipline prevails on and off the field. A captain is not even a first among equals, let alone being a class and cut above the rest. Retired players push and shove for the top slots as coaches, managers and consultants, bringing their pet peeves and personality clashes to the dressing room and selection committees and throwing about their “seniority” status as a badge of authority. Everyone is tainted to a greater or lesser extent by that immoral get-rich-quick disease so prevalent amongst the half-baked urban salariat in poor countries.

No quick-fix solutions are available to stem the rot at the top and bottom. But there is a stream of talent and profusion of passion for cricket in Pakistan. A start can therefore be made by appointing a new PCB chairman who is not a crony of the high and mighty. He must have high moral standing established over a lifetime of acclaimed public service. He should demonstrate sufficient administrative experience to enforce a just system of rewards and punishments. And he must have a love and passion for the game no less than display a vast knowledge of its professional requirements in a cool, calculated but diplomatic manner.

More immediately, Amer and Asif must be persuaded to voluntarily withdraw from the game until they are cleared or punished appropriately on the basis of a credible inquiry. The current tour should continue on the basis of redemption and credibility. Win or lose, cricket fans must be given the treat they deserve without fear or favour. And Ijaz Butt must hand in his papers without waiting to be kicked out.

A word of advice is in order for the Pakistani public too. We shouldn’t clutch at conspiracy theories to prove our innocence. Yes, Indian bookies have a run of the gaming trade, but they didn’t trap the dynamic duo. Yes, the News of the World is a scandalous mass market rag, but its stings have exposed corruption and administrative failings in Britain too. Yes, match-fixing and spot-fixing are rampant in other sports too across the world, but that’s no excuse to dump the game and shame Pakistan for personal greed. And no, the kafir world is not out to deliberately crush our budding Muslim talent and bring us to heel. :rotfl:

Send Pakistan aid, not jobs, U.S. textile groups say
U.S. textile groups and cotton farmers on Wednesday strongly objected to proposed new trade benefits for Pakistan, saying the United States should send aid to the flood-ravaged country, not U.S. jobs.
The groups expressed their concern in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who were urged last week by the Chamber of Commerce, a leading U.S. business group, to press Congress for a generous package of U.S. textile tariff cuts to help Pakistan recover.
These bills provide Pakistan with special tariff preferences for products constituting 74 percent of the volume they ship to the U.S. market, while preserving normal duty treatment on the categories critical to workers and producers throughout our hemisphere," the groups said.
But "any expansion of the product or geographic coverage beyond the language included in the bills listed above would result in a significant loss of U.S. textile and apparel jobs and would force the domestic industry to strongly oppose such legislation," the groups said.

VIEW: High fertility concerns post-floods —Murtaza Haider
With fortunately a low death count, the 2010 floods would still result in a higher fertility rate, given the very large displaced population. If not addressed in the post-disaster planning, higher fertility will result in multiplying the rebuilding needs in the next few years
So abduls fertility increases with flood? Shivji perhaps your medical knowledge can help us understand how it works.
I think its like chinese whisper. Someone must have said that the flood would increase fertility of the troubled land. It was translated to "flood water has increased the fertality, causing trouble in pakiland"... and there you go; imagination unlimited. :)

Pakistan Taliban bombing kills 43 Shi'ites

Image
QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — A suicide bombing claimed by the Pakistani Taliban killed at least 43 Shi'ite Muslims at a procession in southwest Pakistan on Friday. The assault sharply drove up the toll of sectarian assaults in a country battered by massive flooding.
To the northwest in Pakistan's restive tribal regions, two suspected U.S. missile strikes killed at least seven people in an area controlled by one of the main groups battling Americans in neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said. Two other militant bombings left at least two people dead and several wounded on a day convulsed by the violence that threatens the stability of Pakistan's weak civilian government — an essential but problematic Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants. The first attack of the day was a roadside bombing in the northwestern city of Peshawar that killed one police officer and wounded three others, officials said.

We need to come up with a way to callsify all these terrorist attacks in TSP.
There are three types of attacks
A ) Attack on Ahmediyas, Shia and other minorities. These are green on green
B ) Attack on TSP state symbols in Pakjab. These are Green asserting their well greeness
C ) Attack on TSP state symbols by Baloch, Sindh MQM etc. These are poltical acts

I'd reclassify that as

1a. Deobandi attacks on all others. Not just religious minorities (non-Muslim and Muslim), but on the Barelvi majority as well. Intended to pave the way for the creation of a Deobandi Sunni supremacist state (began in the mid-1980s)
1b. Sectarian and ethnic retaliation (MQM/Barelvi/Shia) reprisals for the same. (dates back to the same period)

2a. Deobandi and foreign Salafi attacks on foreign targets (state and NGO) as part of the Global Jihad (began in the early 1990s)
2b. Deobandi attacks on the Pakistani State. Intended to deter and punish Pakistani collaboration with the US against the Global Jihad (2003 onwards, accelerating after 2006)

3. Sub-national separatist movements, particularly the Baluchis (on and off, picking up again in 2003)

It may be counter-intuitive, but people in such situations tend to have more children...the logic is that at least a few out of many will survive. Given the lack of any other thing to do, people will do the only thing that they can do at that point...
