One only hopes Chinese did not cause this. God knows what they are up to in those mountains. Tibet was taken in the 50s, Nepal always a prime candidate.

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An avalanche triggered by Nepal's massive earthquake slammed into a section of the Mount Everest mountaineering base camp, killing at least 17, injuring 61 and leaving an unknown number of climbers and guides unaccounted for on other routes, an official said Sunday.
Twenty-two of the most seriously injured were taken by helicopter to Pheriche village, the nearest medical facility. However, bad weather and communications were hampering more helicopter sorties, said Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

Fennecs.
The environmental & rescue costs are becoming higher than the tourism income from Everest climbers. Time to close this shop for non Indian subcontinent people.

Worst affected in that 6.9 Quake was Indian State of Sikkim. Indian Army ran rescue and relief work with abt 22 sorties of helis. Approx 100 dead with six+ in Nepal and rest in Sikkim which sustained extensive infrastructure damage including roads. The depth of quake was about 20.7 Kms below .
Compare to that this quake was shallow at abt 2.5 Km below earth and with high intensity at 7.9 to 8.1 Richter scale. Ground acceleration will be more in this type of quake causing extensive surface damage.
It is also reported that Majauli Island has shifted/risen few inches. Yet to get reconfirmation.

#NepalEarthquake One IL-76 brought back 152 passengers on board from Kathmandu to Palam
#NepalEarthquake India will be augmenting rescue efforts by pressing into service 4 more heptrs including 2 IAF ALH Dhruvs later in the day.
#NepalEarthquake 3 more MI17 heptrs will take off from Gorakhpur as soon as the 5, now airborne, land at Kathmandu.
I think the best help they can get is from China. Not only is China right next to Nepal, the 2008 Shichuan Earthquake happened in remote area as well. So China has pretty good experience with this.

The first NDRF team reached Nepal in the afternoon on a C-130J aircraft with three tonnes of relief material and equipment. Two C-17 Globemaster aircraft — one with a mobile hospital – and another with three more NDRF teams left New Delhi later in the evening. A fourth aircraft left from Bhatinda airbase.
Excellent reporting. What was this magical fourth aircraft and why did it carry more people AND cargo than the others combined? C17?
