New Delhi: In his 1968 book, Asian Drama, based on his experiences in the subcontinent, Swedish Nobel Laureate, Gunnar Myrdal noted that Pakistani diplomats were better gifted with conviviality and social graces than their Indian counterparts. Fifty years down the line, things seem to have turned upside down, with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan embarrassingly breaking one diplomatic protocol after another. Just a couple of weeks after the Saudi Arabia gaffe, where he spoke to the Saudi King’s interpreter and walked off before the message was even translated to the King, the cricketer-turned-politician refused to stand up at the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek on Thursday. Other world leaders remained standing till all the heads of state arrived onstage.

A Ministry of External Affairs official says: “It’s a major diplomatic success for India to get this declaration on terrorism. It may in all practical purposes mean little on the ground, but what’s reassuring is that we have made Pakistan look for cover even in the grouping where its ‘best friend’, China, calls the shots.” He also says that Modi’s SCO endeavour began well before the government formation on 30 May. “Kyrgyzstan President Sooronbay Jeenbekov’s presence in New Delhi for the swearing-in ceremony was a well-calibrated move. The SCO was in Modi’s mind even before he took oath for the second time,” he adds. The invitation to Jeenbekov, the current chair of SCO, signalled the sincerity and seriousness with which New Delhi looked at the grouping.
Former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal believes an organisation like SCO “gets the best of our diplomacy” as he reminds this newspaper how the two principal powers in SCO—Russia and China—have tense relations with the United States, and “we have good relations with the Americans”. India’s presence in the organisation, Sibal says, can help restrain the United States, which is “pressing us very unreasonably on energy, on our defence ties with Russia, and of course on the trade issue”. But at the same time, he cautions, India must desist from “becoming party to any US bashing… We cannot afford to create more space for China and Russia—especially China—to become even more powerful and fill the vacuum created by any weakening of US powers”.

A big part of the problem is the very nature of Pakistan and how its army perceives itself. In her 2014 book, Fighting to the End: The Pakistan Army’s Way of War, Pakistan expert C. Christine Fair writes that the Pakistan army believes it is “responsible for protecting not only Pakistan’s territorial frontiers but also its ideological frontiers”. According to her, the army, which controls the levers of power in Pakistan, views its struggle with India in existential terms. “For Pakistan’s men on horseback, not winning, even repeatedly, is not the same thing as losing. But simply giving up and accepting the status quo and India’s supremacy, is, by definition, defeat. As a former Chief of (Pakistan) Army Staff explained to me in 2000, Pakistan’s generals would always prefer to take a calculated risk and be defeated than to do nothing at all,” she says. This mindset explains Pakistan’s Kargil and other jihadi misadventures in India.
Rajiv Dogra, former consul general in Karachi and author of Where Borders Bleed, too, recalls how it’s mandatory for Pakistani defence officers to take oath “to engage in jihad against India”. The reasons Dogra finds in Anatol Lieven’s book, Pakistan: A Hard Country. Lieven writes, “His (Pakistani officer’s) image of Indians is of an anti-Pakistan, anti-Muslim, treacherous people. So, he feels that he must always be ready to fight against India.”

Just weeks before the crucial Amarnath Yatra, Pakistan has shared information with India and United States that there could be a terrorist attack using an improvised explosive device (IED) mounted on a vehicle. Intelligence sources confirmed that Pakistan is said to have shared information regarding the threat of a possible attack in South Kashmir.

Sources indicated that terrorists could carry out a Pulwama like terror attack that led to retaliatory Balakot Surgical Strikes. Though the information was shared but top sources in security grid said that the input shared was "generic" in nature. Officials said no specifics have been shared.

The security forces are on high alert with just weeks to go for the crucial Amarnath Yatra. Incidentally, the information was shared ahead of the crucial SCO Summit held at Bishkek which was attended by both PM Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The attack, the Pakistanis said, is being planned to avenge the killing of Zakir Musa. Musa launched and headed an al-Qaeda affiliate called Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind in Kashmir after breaking away from the Hizbul Mujahideen in May 2017.

One of the top most wanted terrorist, he was killed in an operation in the Tral area last month.

A top source in intelligence grid said that Musa was on the hit list of JEM and ISI after he rebelled against Pakistan, unwilling to take commands from across the border.

The source said that a relative of Musa who is known to be close to the now banned Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir conveyed to spare the life of Musa.

The communication, according to reports were stark. He was to give up ISIS and take up Al Qaeda which was more in line with the Pakistan based terror organisation. Musa was till then on the hit list of both the security forces and Pak backed terror organisation.

Now the same organisations which once wanted him eliminated, want to avenge his killing by a retaliatory suicide attack.

Meanwhile top sources said Pakistan was sharing information to avoid any sort of blame or probability of retaliation by India.

Major General (retired) PK Sehgal, a security expert said, "Pakistan has shared information ahead of the Pathankot terror attack. But they have done little to take action against terrorist. But with Paris-headquartered based Financial Action Task Force breathing down its neck on funds allocated to terror groups, it has little option but to pretend to act."

Meanwhile there have been political reactions to the developments. D Raja, left leader expressed concern on information being shared. He said "I hope the government will be on alert and see what is happening across the border in Kashmir."

Another leader Sanjay Singh doubted Pakistan's sincerity in sharing intelligence.

Everyone knows about the Pak sponsored terror. It is a universal truth, he added.

Since the Pulwama attack, there have been multiple alerts on IED attack and vehicle borne attacks.

At US border, beacon of light for migrants in danger, but no foodand water - Chidanand Rajghatta

WASHINGTON: In the hours before she died of dehydration in the Arizona desert after her mother went to look for water, six year old Gurpreet Kaur could not find a “rescue beacon” that US border patrol agents scatter in the wilderness to aid stranded migrants who find themselves in danger. The little girl from India also could not find food and water that Uncle Sam does NOT leave in the desert, and actually FORBIDS Good Samaritans from distributing to undocumented immigrants making the dangerous trek from Mexico to the United States.

Scott Warren would recognize the grim irony of providing migrants a life-saving beacon but denying them food and water for life. The 36 year old geography teacher has been on trial in a US court, charged with conspiracy to transport and harbour migrants, while his defence attorneys are arguing that he and “No More Deaths, ” the humanitarian organization he works with, was simply being kind by providing two migrants with water, food and lodging when he was arrested in early 2018.

Little Gurpreet will become just another statistical blip in the humanitarian crisis at the U.S-Mexico border involving illegal border crossing, but the Warren case has drawn worldwide attention for the Trump administration’s hard-line policy on illegal immigration and asylum seekers. Last week, a jury in Arizona was deadlocked over sentencing Warren.Prosecutors maintained that he should have gotten 20 years in prison.

“In the time since I was arrested in January 2018, no fewer than 88 bodies were recovered from the Arizona desert, ” Warren said in a statement after the deadlocked trial. “The government’s plan in the midst of this humanitarian crisis? Policies to target undocumented people, refugees and their families. Prosecutions to criminalize humanitarian aid, kindness and solidarity.”

While the case has highlighted the work of No More Deaths, which was founded in 2004 by Catholic and Jewish religious leaders and has been active on the border, Gurpreet's death has also drawn attention to the growing number of illegal immigrants from India, mostly from Punjab, who are attempting to enter the U.S not only from Mexico at the Southern border, but also via “panga” boats, an open, outboard powered, fishing vessel common in the Caribbean and Latin America.

In March this year, six Indian nationals were apprehended in upstate New York, pointing to smuggling rings that also operate on the northern border. Indians have also been apprehended in the Pacific off the coast of California.

But the southern border with Mexico remains the favorite entry point for illegal immigrants from South Asia,including Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and Nepalese. Border patrol agents who intercept illegal migrants hidden in tractor trailers and panga boats often find South Asians among them, pointing to ties links between Indian human smugglers and Latino facilitators. 2 terrorists involved in Pulwama attack gunned down

A jawan has died in an encounter with terrorists in Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, a police official said, a day after an Army major was killed by them during a gunbattle in the district.
The official said two terrorists have also been killed who were later identified as Jaish-e-Mohammed's Sajjad Maqbool Bhat and Tauseef who were involved in Pulwama attack of February 14.Acting on a credible input about the presence of terrorists in Bijbehara area of the south Kashmir district, security forces launched a cordon and search operation on Tuesday morning.

After FATF Rap, Pakistan Decides to Shift Students of Hafiz Saeed-run Schools to Govt Institutions
A senior government official told that the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) had objected the Pakistani government's allocation of Rs 180 crore for running the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation schools across the country.

Lahore: Pakistan plans to shift the students of Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed's Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) to the government-run schools after an international terror financing watchdog raised objection over allocation of Rs 180 crore for these institutions.

A senior government official told PTI on Tuesday that the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) had objected the Pakistani government's allocation of Rs 180 crore for running the JuD and FIF schools across the country. "The government could not satisfy the FATF about running a good number of seminaries and schools of JuD and FIF after taking over their control in March. Therefore, the Imran Khan administration is seriously considering shifting the students of these seminaries and schools to the government-run institutions," he said.

At least the non delusional ones are beginning to realize the magnitude of the gap between India and Pakistan and can see the writing on the wall.

Punish guilty, shed ‘shielding’ notion, Muslims urge Mamata Banerjee – TNN

KOLKATA: Prominent Muslims in Kolkata have urged Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to act decisively against people of their community who were involved in crime as that would help overcome the “perception” that they are being “shielded or appeased”.

Muslims from various walks of life, who have been living in Kolkata for decades, highlighted two recent incidents: the NRS Medical College and Hospital violence last Monday and the hounding of model Ushoshi Sengupta and her app cab driver in the city this Monday. The accused, in both cases, were arrested within 24 hours of the incidents.



“The attackers in both instances were members of our community. We are grieved and embarrassed. Bring the assailants to book not just in these two instances but in every single instance where Muslims are involved. They should not be allowed to get away because they happen to be Muslims (as is the growing perception). This will send out a message that members of one community are not being shielded or appeased (as most people believe),” the letter — signed by 46 prominent Muslim citizens of Kolkata — states. It would help if these Pious People also send a similar Petition to all the leaders of Administrative, Defence, Political and Religious Leaders both in Terroristan and Bangladesh urging them Act similarly!

They have also urged the state government to engage or encourage engagements with Muslim youth and their families across Kolkata in gender sensitisation, civic consciousness and law compliance.

“This requires long-term patience but needs to be implemented right away,” the letter says.

Psychologist Zahid H Ganjee, one of the signatories, said: “There have been several lynching cases in the past year-and-a-half and sane voices from the Hindu community have demanded justice.

Unfortunately, Muslims have not said and done enough when members of the community have acted like rogues. This has led to the entire community being tarnished. I hope the letter will spark a conversation, even a debate and then something good will come out of it. We are losing our primary identity as a citizen of this country and state. We need to reclaim it.”

Abdul Rahim, who runs an NGO, stressed the need for the community to receive fair and not privileged treatment. “There is a growing perception that the administration here is soft on Muslims who break the law. This perception needs to change. We want the law to be enforced without considering religious identity,” he said. As the man said "Chance would be a Fine Thing

Communications expert Mudar Patherya, who drafted the letter after a discussion with several of the signatories, said there had been simmering discontent for some time. “I will not comment on whether the perception (that the administration is soft on Muslims) is right or wrong. But I feel, till now, governments have looked at the next vote and not the next generation. The moment they do that, things will change positively. I believe Muslims need to take a position,” he said.

Rahim says the administration needs to reach out to the community in the ghettos and strengthen, educate and empower the youth. “If you consider each of the incidents, the culprits hailed from ghettos,” he said.

Most of the signatories feel the recurring crime by Muslim youths is to do with poverty and illiteracy in ghettos where they reside. Mamoon Akhtar, who runs a school (Samaritan Help Mission) in Tikiapara, says children can bring about great change if educated. NOOOOOOO! It is the Legacy of the Khangress!

But the letter has also drawn flak from a section of the community. Nutritionist Neha Hafiz, another signatory, took pains to point out that it was not a missive against the Trinamool government or its treatment of Muslims; but there was a need to change the perception that was being created about the community receiving more privileges than others. “There is a problem. We cannot deny it. And it needs to be addressed. Blaming anyone does not help. There is a need for education and reforms,” she said. I repeat "NOOOOOOO! It is the Legacy of the Khangress!"

3 dead, several injured as passenger train hits freight car near Hyderabad

Three people were killed and several injured when a passenger train hit a freight car near Hyderabad on Thursday, Edhi volunteers and hospital staff said.

One of the deceased, identified as Aslam Chandio and who breathed his last in the intensive care unit (ICU), was the driver of the ill-fated Jinnah express, his colleague said.

The other two were identified as Syed Noman Ali and Yasir Bashir.

The Lahore-bound Jinnah Express, which had departed from Karachi, rammed into the Rear End of a stationary goods train that was carrying coal and was bound for Yusufwala.
