England’s party problems

Posted by Jayaditya Gupta 10 hours, 18 minutes ago in ICC World Cup 2011

As if England don’t have enough problems: injuries, squad disruptions, playing Sri Lanka in a knockout World Cup game in hot and humid Colombo. The night before their quarter-final, the team was kept up till late by a raucous party that began at a nearby nightclub and then moved into their hotel. The noise – presumably nothing compared to expected levels at the Premadasa on Saturday – prompted the Twitterati among the England camp to complain. “If you happen to be in the nightclub of our hotel, could you possibly pull the plug from the socket,” Graeme Swann tweeted. “Or pour vodka on the decks.”

That was at 11-30pm, when he should have been tucked in and dreaming of perfectly flighted offspin. Almost an hour later, his bowling team-mate James Anderson sounded more accommodating: “The rave across the street has finished and my windows have stopped shaking but it seems they have moved the party into our hotel! If it’s still going in a couple of hours I might stick a pair of jeans on and hit the dance floor."

England’s players and fans will be hoping that the late-night distraction – even if Anderson can keep away from his jeans – will not have the same effect as the early-morning fire drill at their Leeds hotel before the first day’s play in the 2009 Ashes Test at Headingley. That day too the news was broken by Swann; England were all out for 102 and lost the Test by an innings and 80 runs.

You’d wonder how the Sri Lankans could sleep through the noise. Perhaps they are used to it, but the answer anyway is less complicated – they are staying in a hotel up the road and away from the action.

Cricinfo. England already lost?

Ball expected to seam at Mohali track under lights: Curator
"The ball will seam a bit under the lights," Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) curator Daljeet Singh said.

He said it will be a typical Mohali wicket, with generally good pace and bounce, which is its basic nature.

God be with our southern brothers vs the english fleet attempting to make landfall on Colombo.

take them on the beach and surf before they establish themselves
set fire to their ships
drive away their horses
pour salt water into their cannons
chase them till aden and the cape of good hope!
show 'em some ceylonese steel!

Yep, what is her name?

BTW, Trott & Morgan sounds like whiskey brand.. some how gulped their way through to 230 for the lankans. Quite doable indeed.

Cricinfo....
Graeme Swann first up. England's best bowler, possibly the world's best spinner. Huge job on his hands with Dilshan on strike.

Trott is a Saffer & Morgan poached from Ireland. United Nations-11 this angrej team.

It won't be long before ten Dos/K O'brien are snatched from their native sides and commentators like Nasser, Artherton bragging about newer and better "English" team.

all hinges in the SL openers giving them a good fast start without losing their wkts. SL do not bat as deep as SA India - no sting in their tail.

World's best spinner went for 20 runs in 3 overs. England have rested 'the world's best' and decided to experiment with part timers. So much for cricinfo's more gora than gora themselves attitude.

swann is one of the better spinners in the world today. he could prolly walk into any team today. but calling him the best is stretching it a bit.

but these thing happen a lot. if you read australian english forums, there imagination of spin bowling is all about white bowlers. old ones and new ones. hauritz was supposed to be some sort a god's gift, then they said smith was the magic trick. they were exposed as the kids they are. just because you have watched 1000hr of videos does not mean you know anything. compared to these swann is better. he is older and wiser. hes prolly the best ausenglish spinner at the moment.

these ausenglish spinners build their rep mostly against each other. one good ashes series vs aus and he would automatically be appointed by english media as best in world. Aus have around 2 players who play spin properly.

the real test is coming to south asia and trying their fortunes against the grizzled old veterans on spin friendly tracks! half the english team goes home with mental trauma and injury everytime they show up in India.

actually swann is similar bowler to bhajji. ashwin is similar to mendis.
S&B are prominently U-dip. A&M are more V-dip.

some of S&B dip and rip off pitch are the bowling equivalents of tendulkar's offside drives.

ashwin has not played tests.
