'curriculum of hate'
In many chapters outlined by NCJP, modern Hindus are referred to as “gangsters” and Christians are referred to as “violent crusaders.”According to the report, the hate content in textbooks has more than doubled since the last time they were revised. For example, some 30 Grade 5 to 10 textbooks published in Punjab, examined in 2009, were found to have 12 instances of biased material that could be considered “hate content.” In 2012, the textbooks underwent a curriculum revision. After another review, the total number of quantifiable instances of questionable or factually incorrect material went up to 33, according to Peter Jacob, the study's author.Curriculum authorities respondWhen Pakistan’s Federal Textbook Board – a government body that authorizes and reviews content published in schoolbooks – was contacted, at first they denied that there was such content. When a Monitor correspondent confronted them with the latest report by NCJP, Riaz Ahmad, head of the government curriculum committee, promised to look into itWe try our best to check such content, but since our society belongs to religious people, it is tough to bring [such] changes,.“” Dr. Ahmak says, adding that the curriculum has to respect the society it is being taught in

More Kerry for Bakistan. Can we expect some new largess for the bakis now that the US is backing their image building exercise?

A rare glimpse inside Pakistan's ground zero for terrorists
NBC News obtained rare access to South Waziristan and last week became the first foreign team of journalists to report from North Waziristan.
"There are only less than half a percent of people who are fighting as terrorists. What about the more than 99.5 percent of people?" asks Maj. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa, who commanded the army division in South Waziristan in 2010 before becoming official military spokesman.
At the heart of the army's plans to rebuild the area is a 370-mile road — funded in large part by USAID money. The road, half of which is complete, will connect the isolated and insular tribal communities to each other, as well as the rest of mainstream Pakistan and to trading routes across the border in Afghanistan.
"The strategy that the Pakistan army has adopted is a people-centric strategy," Hayat said. "So the more areas you've able to clear, the more infrastructure you're able to build, the more people you are able to bring back and sustain. Provide them economic opportunities. That is the measure of success."

US is walking away from installing turbines on Helmand river. The dam supplies most of the power to Kandahar. India should step in and offer her help and expertise.

Kusch Dino Ki Baat Hai Bayya, Aaa Raha Hai Aakhir.
KARACHI: The violence, that broke out after some of Abbas Town victims were laid to rest, has claimed at least three lives, while it left 25 others injured across Pakistan's commercial center, Karachi, on Monday, Geo News reported.Reports have it that Gunmen shot and killed three people returning from a funeral Monday for some of the victims of a massive bombing in Karachi, highlighting escalating sectarian tensions in a city where 48 people were killed the day before. The bomb exploded Sunday evening as people were leaving a mosque, and underlined the increasing threat militant groups target people in ever-bolder attacks. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but sectarian militant groups have carried out such attacks in the past.Reportedly around eight passenger buses were torched, whereas two ambulances were also set ablaze in different areas with most of the incidents reported from Sohrab Goth. Some of those attending the funeral set fire to buses in one Karachi neighborhood as they went to the cemetery, said police official Qamar Ahmad.hen they moved through the same area after the funeral, gunmen opened fire on the group and wounded several protesters, he said. Two of the men died and 13 were wounded, said Dr. Saleem Memon, who works at the hospital where the wounded were taken. The Sohrab Goth neighborhood where the shooting occurred is home to many ethnic Pashtuns who traditionally live in northwestern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan."Gun-wielding arsonists and violent vandals are on the loose everywhere. Various areas have plunged into total chaos", sources told Geo News.Sources say heavy gunfire has walloped Sohrab Goth and lawmen are nowhere to be found there. It was later reported that the cops have fled Sohrab Goth stationhouse, thus the area is running without any law & order. Source also added that the audacious gunmen even targeted a Rangers vehicle which arrived at the scene later. As a result at least five paramilitary troops including an officers who had come to take stock of the situation were injured, said an Rangers spokesman. The injured Rangers are under treatment in CMH Malir for bullet-injuries in a hospital.“We can see people taking cover under the cars. Local residents have been under virtual siege since this armed clash broke out”, sources in the restive Sohrab Goth area added.Police also claimed several of their men who sustained bullet-wounds were in the hospitals, where some of them are said to be critical, they added. An aborted attempt to abduct policemen was also reported from the area.Several people have also been injured during firing in Abbas Town. Rescue teams deployed in the area have also been targeted.Firing was also reported from Ancholi and Indus Plaza. Thousands of people thronged a main road in Karachi Monday for the funeral service. Many beat their chests and heads and chanted "Stop the brutal attacks!" They called on the government to take action against militant groups responsible for the attacks. The city shut down on Monday for a day of mourning to honor the dead. Markets, gas stations and transportation were closed as security officials patrolled the streets. At the site of the blast, family and friends looked through the rubble for missing family members.

In circles: Stunned by attack, senators grope for answers on unrest
ISLAMABAD:

Lawmakers in the upper house tried their best to make sense of the deteriorating law and order in Karachi on Monday.
Scores of them believe the Karachi bombing is part of an international conspiracy against Pakistan given its two key decisions taken with the Chinese and Iranian governments over the strategic Gwadar port and gas pipeline project.

Feedback on the FP article
I also couldn't get what the author wants for Pakistan. In my humble opinion the country doesn't need some big sack of money to push it into some direction. It needs to be told to get real. To accept that part of Kashmir is controlled by India. To accept that its warlike behavior has worsened rather than bettered the position of Muslims in India. To focus on the economy and the well-being of its own citizens. To stop seeing a prosperous Afghanistan as a threat and instead accept that to be a prosperous country it needs prosperous neighbors.

Pakistan PM Ashraf to visit India on Saturday
From the above,
While New Delhi has approved his visit to the religious shrine, it's still caught in two minds about engaging Ashraf in a dialogue, even if casual, with his counterpart Manmohan Singh at a time when India has effectively suspended all exchanges in retaliation against the killing of two Indian soldiers and mutilation of their bodies by Pakistan army. It is understood that Singh himself will take a call on whether or not to meet Ashraf.
Why should GoI even hesitate ? Why aren't they able to firmly stick to a line taken when there is no other development that needs a re-look ? Moreover, this Pakistani PM will demit office within 10 days. Why should our PM meet him at this stage and lower our own prestige when we know that the lame duck PM is coming to India to visit Ajmer sharif while still enjoying all the benefits his office gives him ? This inability to be firm with Pakistan gives the impression that it is India which wants to cling to straws in the wind somehow, desperate as it is to get friendlier with TSP.

http://dawn.com/2013/03/04/good-old-talwandi/
Good old Talwandi
Warburton is a prologue to a spiritual phenomenon. During his campaign at Jaisalmir, Alaudin Khilji fought a decisive battle against the Rajputs. After the victory, a prince was also brought to him amongst the prisoners of war. He was so impressed with the chivalry of this last surviving prince that he released him and brought him to Punjab. On the conditions of never raising the army against Delhi, he granted him the most fertile of his estate. The place gained fame as Raipur and was degenerated to Rai Bhoey Dee Talwandi. In the 15th century, the city was ruled by Rai Bular, who first recognised the spiritual being of Baba Nanak. The name was changed soon after and it was called Nankana, with reference to Baba Nanak.Nankana, in other words, is a walk through Nanak’s life, organised in nine Gurudwaras. From Kiara Saheb to Baal Lilaah and Nihang Saheb to Patti Saheb; every Gurudwara has a story to tell. May it be schooling or trade, playing or shade, every place now attracts large numbers of devotees, a reminder of the Sufi tradition Punjab once boasted.Baba Nanak’s father, Kaloo Mehta, was an employee of the court. When Rai Bulaar realised the spirituality of young Baba Nanak, he advised Kaloo Mehta against scolding his son. Rai also granted 250 squares of fertile land in the vicinity of Gurudwara. The fifth centenary celebrations of Baba Nanak saw a contingent led by Rai Hussain Bhatti, who, then headed Rai Bulaar’s family and was given a medal for his interfaith services during the Coronation Durbar of 1887. At the time of Partition, the Bhattis also arranged the safe transit of the migrating Sikhs. This tradition of Muslim-Sikh unity continues till today. Salim Bhatti, a 19th generation Bhatti, lives to this tradition, on the lines of duty, to date.Initially, the administration of Gurudwaras was the domain of Udasi Mehants, who also looked after the revenue generated by the attached estates. As the yields swelled, the Augur’s interest in religious matters decreased and that in money matter increased. A rise in the incidents of debauchery pointed on the credibility of Narayan Das, Mahant of Gurudwara Janam Asthan. When a group of female devotees from Jaranwala were raped in the premises of the Gurudwara, Master Sunder Singh of Lyallpur finally stood up against Mahant. He explained to Panth, the misdeeds of Mahant, who decided that the next session will be inside the Gurudwara in March. This was the 24th day of January and the year 1921.On foreseeing the prosecution, Mahant came up clean. He condemned the incident and demanded that the culprits be taken to task. On the other hand, he had started recruiting mercenaries for killing prominent Akalis. There are indications that Mahant derived strength from the age old trinity of the Augur, the landlord and the king. British authorities and a few landlords were said to be partners in crime. The duo had an idea that if control of the Gurudwara drifted to the hands of commons, ruling Punjab with an iron fist would become difficult. Mahant kept on feeding his arsenal while the Shrominee committee waited for the promise of dialogue. On the night between 19th and 20th February, the Sikhs reached the Gurudwara in the form of Jathas. When they were in the premises, the goons of Mahant recklessly fired at them. The leader of the Jathas, Lachman Singh, was tied with the tree in the aangan and was burnt alive. Bullets pierced through the walls of the Gurudwara, bodies of protesters and folds of Garanth Saheb. When things got out of control, Mr. King, the commissioner of Lahore, arrested Mahant and his accomplices and handed over the keys of Nankana to Shrominee. Many estimates put the death toll at 150. The incident is commemorated every 21st February when Ardaas are offered and the wounded Garanth is taken out for the public audience. The traces of the bullets and the name of the Shaheedi Jatha are marked in the walls of Gurudwara.Going to Nankana was a fantastic childhood experience. Dada ji Siddique, the eldest family member, would walk us around and show us the Sarovars and Gurudwaras. Once back, he would sit us all in the aangan and help us translate the kalma in Punjabi. After having translated it, word by word, he would tell us the Punjabi translation
Avikta Avikta … Muhammad Autar.(He is one, He is one and Muhammad is the prophet)

What Went Wrong in Afghanistan?
Amrullah Saleh: Believing Pakistan could change

The truth of the matter is that the United States is simply too afraid of Pakistan to sever ties with it. Islamabad is capitalizing on the West's fear and short-term security concerns, and its army and intelligence establishment have a long history of supporting Islamist extremists for their own ends. The West sees these radicals as one of its primary security challenges and has decided it is better off proceeding as if nothing is wrong with its relationship with Pakistan.

After all, confronting Pakistan directly could cost Western lives. Several European countries have significant populations of naturalized citizens of Pakistani origin. These Pakistani Europeans travel to Pakistan's tribal areas -- a primary hub for al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other terrorist outfits. Members of Western intelligence circles believe that without maintaining good relations with the Pakistani military and the intelligence establishment, there is a risk that the 9/11 attacks could be repeated.

Dealing with Pakistan, therefore, has become a necessary evil. Western strategists are sitting on piles of intelligence implicating Pakistan in major terrorism plots -- such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which claimed 166 lives -- yet the country is not treated as an enemy. Doing so would be too costly: Pakistan is, after all, a nuclear-armed state, the patron for terrorist groups across the region, and home to 180 million people. The West simply lacks the guts and resources to officially treat Pakistan as a threat.

Some analysts have tried to paint this war as a conflict between Afghans. It isn't. In reality, it is a war between a Pakistan-supported militant group and the rest of the world. There are only two possible solutions: A Western-backed Afghan government decisively defeats the Taliban, or the Taliban agree to demilitarize and join the political process. The United States, however, should understand one thing very clearly: It would be making a huge error -- and confirming the Afghan people's worst fears -- if it picked up and left Afghanistan to the Taliban's brutal ways.

It is astounding that in such circumstances political parties have been mulling over, nay, actually working to initiate a dialogue with the TTP. The very premise that we’ll achieve peace by negotiating with the Taliban is wrong as for that we would need complete cooperation from the state agencies. People in Swat, Waziristan, Quetta and now in Karachi have been crying that attacks are launched when security officials are stationed only a few yards away from the scene but the media is diverting the attention from the real issue by implicating analysts in the question as to whether we should start a dialogue with the Taliban or not. When the valid question to be asking is, whether the state will take action or will it compel members of the country’s Shia community to take up arms?
w.r.t last sentence - There have been 3 deadly attacks in a matter of few weeks. What could be the threshold? There are already reports of some Shia communities taking up arms for self defense.

PCB calls for revival of international cricket in Pakistan
"It was the tragic episode in the history of Pakistan cricket," (PCB chairman Zaka ) Ashraf, who is also a member of the ruling Pakistan People's Party's central executive committee, told ESPNcricinfo. "We have suffered a lot in fighting against terrorism - a war that is the entire world's and Pakistan is fighting as a front-line state. The whole world should stand with us in helping revive international cricket. :(( "
I will $hit on my front yard, cry that nobody is coming to my house and give me money and then raise the stink by crying on the street corner that it is now the problem of the entire street and that my neighbours must come and clear what I shouldn't have done in the first place.

Seth G. Jones: Allowing a sanctuary in Pakistan
Pakistan is running one of the most successful covert-action programs today against a major power -- and against the United States, no less. The U.S. failure to stop Pakistan is particularly egregious because the United States was involved in an almost identical program 30 years ago -- with the ISI's help -- against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Second, the United States and Pakistan failed to target the Taliban sanctuary in Pakistan. The United States has conducted drone strikes in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas. But senior Taliban leaders are located hundreds of miles south in Baluchistan province and Karachi.

Neither the United States nor Pakistan has targeted the Taliban's command-and-control network there. Instead, the Taliban's leader, Mullah Omar, is thought to reside in Baluchistan, well outside the area where drone strikes are occurring. The Taliban's inner shura, its most important decision-making body, has also been safe from U.S. strikes. The inner shura provides strategic guidance for the insurgency, exercises some command and control, and is the largest fundraiser. Baluchistan has been so safe for Taliban leaders that most have moved their families there and have sent their children to Pakistani schools, according to a range of U.S., European, and Pakistan officials I interviewed.

Afghan insurgents enjoy both outside support and sanctuary, a doubly difficult hurdle for the United States and its allies to overcome. Ten years after the United States helped overthrow the Taliban regime, it is remarkable that successive U.S. administrations have refused to target the Taliban safe haven in Baluchistan. The Soviet Union made a similar mistake in the 1980s when it failed to act against the seven major mujahideen groups headquartered in Pakistan.

In his book The Bear Trap, Mohammad Yousaf, who headed the ISI's covert war in Afghanistan against the Soviets, wrote that the insurgent sanctuary in Pakistan was essential to defeating the Soviets and winning the insurgency. Sadly, Yousaf's revelation remains just as true today.
The comments on the article are interesting.

Nonsense. The US only had Al Qaeda as an enemy and Al Qaeda has been defeated. Pakistan is an ally. The US can safely pull out now, having won the war.

X Posted from the “Pakistan arms sales, ops, doctrine, etc” thread.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Military doth protest too much, methinks.

The New York Times (NYT) is reporting that two drone strikes in early February that led to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan lodging an official protest with the US Embassy, was not carried out by the US.

The NYT further reports that the “Americans’ best guess is that one or possibly both of the strikes were carried out by the Pakistani military and falsely attributed to the C.I.A. to avoid criticism from the Pakistani public.”:

9/11. It already did, we know it couldn't do anything after waging a war on terrorism for more than 10 years. It is like saying, next time if you hit me, I will show you, then it gets bitch slapped by TSP, then US gives it billions and asks it not to slap it or else, then TSP does it again, US pays ...gnashes at TSP the cycles continue...yawn..

Hunting for some integrity - Edit in DT
The legal heirs of the Nawab of Kharan — the rightful owners of large tracts of agricultural and hunting land in the Kharan and Washak districts of Balochistan — have taken issue with the federal government over a matter that has now made its way to the Balochistan High Court (BHC). They have filed a constitutional petition in the BHC against the allotment of their lands by the federal government to UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. They complain that they are never asked for their permission for this generosity and when the rich and powerful Arabs come to play in what is literally their backyard, they are denied the right to visit their lands. Even their employees are denied their bread and butter as shepherds and farmers are barred from entering and tending to the lands. The land that gets allotted time and again includes forests, water channels, orchards and pastures.

One cannot blame the nawab’s heirs for raising a storm. The federal government seems to think it is okay to allow the Arabs unfettered access to someone else’s land each year without fail due to which the space is occupied with the UAE sheikh’s troupe of personal guards, dignitaries, footmen and what have you. This does not surprise. Balochistan has always been treated like that one poor, downtrodden relative everyone seems to think it is acceptable to take advantage of. The citizens, be they nawabs or ordinary citizens, have been deprived of basic rights such as access to quality healthcare, education, royalties for resources, and the list goes on. The Baloch have also been dealt a very harsh hand by the security and military forces, which have been suspected of abducting and killing Baloch ctizens. While this petition may seem trivial in these upsetting, violent times, it is just another example of how disregarded the Baloch are. By their very nature, Arab sheikhs are arrogant and self-absorbed. If the government shows them that the Baloch can be mistreated with such abandon then how will they ever see the province and its people as anything but fair game? If we cannot treat our own with some respect and national dignity, why would anyone else? *

I was referring to the attempted Times Square bombing specifically, where an actual Pakistani was involved. Had that been 'successful'. I don't think you would have seen this back and forth bitch slap-provide funds-bitch slap-provide funds game continue. Hilary strongly hinted at what could have taken place. WTC attack was not directly linked to Pakistan, but to Al Qaeda and Egyptian, Saudi and Algerian terrorists. Pakistan was involved in helping to set up the environment i.e training ground in Afghanistan for some of the terrorists.

True US top political establishment is dominated by few elite schools like Harward/Ivy league. If you see carefully Indian political elite specially congress party is completely dominated and run by Doon School/St Stephens college idiots. They think they are rightful hairs to british raj and hate anything indian/hindu. My 2 cents.

I doubt so. How can US make Pakistan responsible for the actions of one non-state actor, that too when he is living in US for such long period?

Did 9/11 make US attack KSA? Instead it removed majority of KSA's potential strategic challengers (Iraq, AQ)

Wasn't there a discussion some time back here about how the top school graduates in US tend to like gov jobs or are hired for the jobs? the argument is not about who holds the gov jobs, it is about the most powerful nation on earth is brought down to it's knees because of it's incompetence and inflated false ego. Even though US has the top talent pool in the world, the policies are dumb as door knobs. And it is not a comparison to who makes Indian policies. Don't we have UPSC exams to choose babus for top notch bureaucratic jobs?

Some of the terrorists were Saudis, but 9/11 was mainly a Paki plot.

Its like the eunuch goonda who screams "Phir maare to, Dekh loonga tujkoh!" They would have done nothing but give more AIDs to TSP.

Bush admin has neutered/blunted all the policy options when they did not hold TSP accountable for 9/11 even when there was direct evidence of it being sourced from TSP. The fear was that TSP would have a jihadi coup and they would merge with AlQ and the West would have a nuke armed terrorist group.

Now only India has that threat from the TSPA.

At a minimum they should have droned out the TSPA jihadi leaders or had them demobilized from the services.

Didn't happen.
Colin Bint Powell saw to that.

Whodunnit? US, Pak quarrel over drone strikes
WASHINGTON: It's a hilarious situation, except perhaps for the nameless victims of the attacks. Pakistan says American drone attacks on its tribal regions is killing civilians, alienating people, and keeps asking the US to halt them — unless it gives Pakistan drones or drone technology so it can carry out the strikes itself. Washington says the protests are phony, a public posturing by Pakistan which privately accedes to drone strikes in areas where it has ceded sovereignty, a charge Islamabad denies.

Now the two sides have carried the farce one step further. The US has suggested Pakistan is falsely accusing Washington of carrying out drone strikes to cover up its own operations. Specifically, the Obama administration has denied it carried out two drone strikes that were carried out in early February, and reported by the media. Apparently, the US did not carry out those strikes — and they might not even have occurred at all.

"They were not ours," an unnamed US official was quoted telling the US media. "We haven't had any kinetic activity since January." So whodunit? The Americans' best guess is that one or possibly both of the strikes were carried out by the Pakistani military and falsely attributed to the CIA.

"If the American version is true, it is a striking irony," the New York Times, which first reported the bizarre story, said. "In the early years of the drone campaign, the Pakistani army falsely claimed responsibility for American drone strikes in an attempt to mask CIA activities on its soil. Now, the Americans suggest, the Pakistani military may be using the same program to disguise its own operations." What remained unexplained is how Pakistan could have gotten drone technology, which it has long begged Washington for.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani military, which is accused of acceding to US drone attacks allowing the civilian government to take the rap, denied the strange American allegation. A spokesman for the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) was quoted telling the Pakistani media "such an accusation is a distortion of the facts and seems to be aimed at diluting Pakistan's stance on drone strikes."

Pure Bannish material !!!!!! This actually happened in USA press room

http://dawn.com/2013/03/04/pakistan-to- ... ll-league/
We want to glamourise this game in Pakistan, we want to run it like the IPL in India with cricket,” he told AFP.The competition is dependent on sponsors coming forward, but the PFF hopes to run it in May or September, Khan said, and if all goes well there are plans to expand the competition next year – and even try to lure foreign players.
Sure, why not? But in the same report
Balochistan is the heartland of the game, the only place where crowds of thousands regularly turn up to watch matches, but it is also one of the country’s most dangerous regions, beset by sectarian and separatist violence.

The three PPL clubs based in the southwestern province were each awarded four 3-0 walkover wins last season after teams refused to visit.
 Bakis expecting foreign players to visit Al Bakistan where even the local players refuse to tread.
