SBajwa wrote:So! bowlers save the day!! I say that Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Kartik should be given a chance in middle order instead of Vijay S and Jadhav. 260s is very easy to chase in these conditions. I am not sure what Vijay S did to get a guaranteed selection in world cup. Even R Ashwin has more experience and has proven himself.
Vijay Shankar was a last minute shoo in after all other players India tried at number 4 over the years failed.
Rayudu was the top contender until he failed in the NZ one dayers and VS did well in the T20 matches after that.

Kartik failed too and he is not the first choice number 4. He is in more as a wicket keeping backup to Dhoni and only then as number 4.

Pant's keeping was not considered adequate for English conditions.

I like VS' batting and it is harsh to drop him after only after 1.5 failures. He made a good 29 against Afg in a low scoring match and looked assured before getting out to poor shot selection.

He got out to a good ball in today's match.

R Ashwin hasn't been in the one day set up for a looong time now. :) .

India`s middle order is a big suspect.
The only chink in an otherwise formidable team.
I would have chosen Mayank Aggarwala to open with Rohit Sharma. He proved himself in Australia.
KL Rahul keeps getting bowled in England. He must play at 4.

Too late to make any changes now.

India is missing a bet by not bringing in Jadeja. Should replace one of the spinners with him. Probably Kuldeep. Jadeja contributes a lot runs and maybe wickets through his fielding, plus what he can do with bat and ball.

Depends on the pitch. With the trend of absolutely flat pitches, Indian finger spinners Ashwin and Jadeja were found ineffective in taking wickets are controlling runs. So they turned to wrist spinners.
If the pitches are turning like some of them are Jadeja can play but our batting has failed in only one match so far.

But we probably should rest Kuldeep against England for strategic reasons. We are likely to play against England again in the semis or finals. It's better not to give any practice to the English batsmen against him.

Pooch from ignorance: How does state of pitch impact finger-spin vs. wrist-spin, pls?

But what I came here to post: Afg turns out in Indian Blue vs. u-no-hu. And... (drumroll!!!) for 2 teams of non-drinking fans, these sure have a lot of bottles handy as well as plenty of early "spirit"!
A group of fans were evacuated from Headingley after a fight broke out between the two groups of supporters during the first innings of the Pakistan-Afghanistan league stage encounter in Leeds on Saturday (June 29). Security personnel sprung into action in the stands below the Carnegie pavilion to douse the situation that had escalated following reported provocation from one set of supporters.

The simmering geopolitical tension between the two Asian neighbours had given the contest, the first between the two countries at a World Cup, a needle even before the start of play. As early as 9am, fans of both sides poured through the turnstiles of the stadium, with some ticketless among them even attempting to jump over the fences to get in, only to be taunted by the other set.

An hour into the game, a melee broke out at the Carnegie stand with supporters throwing punches following a supposed provocation. As they were evacuated out of the stadium, clashes broke out, with some of the journalists trying to film the incident also assaulted with bottles thrown at them.
Rooh-Afza or ZamZam Cola, to provide the Reberj-Shwing bottle caps, hain?

It probably won't. But generally, wrist spinners spin the ball more (because of the bio mechanics involved, I guess) and have more variations. So they are supposed to extract some turn even on flatter pitches compared to finger spinners.

Chahal and Kuldeep were huge hits when they started, but now the oppositions seem to have adjusted more to them than they to the opposition. So I would say only one should be played at a time, the other spin place going to Jadeja. While batting has not collapsed (much) yet, the Death Overs are a different matter. Only Pandya and Dhoni-when-awake (DWA) are hitting sixes in plenty. Vijay Shankar great at doing stylish Leave Outside Off-Stump, but not at slogging 6s. If I were opposing captain I would order to make sure VS keeps the strike as much as possible.

Pant is a good slogger when he is awake. DK proven to be a striker at the Death, but I don't see them playing DWA and DK in same ODI. DK does not have the Label of a Star National Team Specialist Batsman, unlike VS  .

Rest of the tail is long (Bhuvaneshwar OK for Test batting, not ODIs/T20s, Boom-rah brave but simply not skilled, Shami same as Zaheer Khan (power but wild slog), Chahal and Kuldeep so-so). Compare to BritPakis or AUS, who are dangerous at least down to #10. King Jadeja is a match-winner for pressure situations.

Wow! AFG lose a review, but nice "body language" between fielder and batsman after. Obviously the blue said something that made the green spin around in offence, then added something right in his face.

Sports minister Kiren Rijiju increases athletes diet budget
Speaking about his decision, Rijiju said, “While having my meal at the athletes mess (at the National Institute of Sports) in Patiala, I noticed that senior and junior athletes and SAI trainees have different diets since the food budget for each section is different.

“However, diet is key for the success of a sportsperson and no child can become a world champion with inadequate diet. The diet of an athlete should not depend on the level at which he or she is playing, but on the need of the athelete as per recommendation of coaches and nutritionists, budget cannot be the deciding factor while planning an athlete’s diet.

“I have therefore decided that going forward, there will be no discrepancy in the food budget of athletes who are training at SAI centers,” added the Minister after having breakfast at the women’s hostel here at NIS Patiala.

Jadeja is good but to bring him in replacing KY or YC would be stupidity based on current form. He has rarely ever scored with bat, is a lower category spinner than the above 2. The only skill where he is better than any other player in the world is fielding.
As long as India is winning, I don't see any reason to tinker except for VS especially if he is no longer bowling. Then bring in RP, a left hander in lower half adds to the opposition woes. VS doesn't look like he belongs at this level.

If it rains tomorrow, England just has to win against NZ and they are through irrespective of BD - Pak match because of better run rate. BD and Pak prospects hinge on what happens between Ind - BD and Pak - BD. If Eng wins both against Ind and NZ, they are through. If they lose both, they are out. If they win only one, they will have to depend on Ind - BD and Pak - BD matches.

If NZ loses by a big margin today, they might actually fall behind Pak or BD on NRR and lose out on a semi spot. But more likely the contest right now is between Eng, Pak and BD. It's difficult to root for anybody in those three. SL has an outside chance if they win both their remaining matches, India beats BD and BD beats Pak. There are still quite a few possibilities right now.

Eng and NZ base their one day game on playing on flat wickets. So do Aus and Ind to a great extent. But ICC has thrown a curve ball by preparing pitches that are stopping, seaming, spinning and uneven.

Guys, on pooch, won't VK and pregnant shastri look at pitch before every match? Such a good batting pitch, with one side ridiculously short distance from pitch, why would you play 2 spinners. Their team selection has been very idiotic on many occasions especially during away season.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry

^^Yeah, Bhuvi should have played probably. Shami another problem in death overs. Before the start of this match, every one was saying India will blow Eng over but the failure of spin bowling has thrown a big question mark over our world cup chances.

All teams have some or the other batting issues. Our middle order rarely gets a chance to bat. I still feel VS should have played instead of RP.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry

I think VS was given enough chances, RP proved himself in Australia and England against such a top class bowling attack. We clearly needed a batsman today and he was a better choice. With kind of batting, don't think VS would have fared any better.
