CM Suvendu Adhikari announces that ISKCON will provide Mid-Day Meals to school children across Bengal.

Pure Sattvik meals to be served under the initiative.

Opposition pissed...........suvendu has set the cat among the mullahs

no anda, onlee jhanda

midday meals in some states are served by ISKON and several desert cult schools has asked to be served with ISKON prepared meals

ISKON kitchens easily rival those of many 5 star hotels in their organisation, professionalism, and efficiency of operations

Defending the decision in the Assembly, CM Adhikari sought to allay concerns over the involvement of the religious organisation in the execution of the mid-day meal scheme. “We are giving the responsibility of cooking mid-day meals to ISKCON. If you have an objection, do not say ‘Hare Krishna’ – no one will force you. You will get good food to eat. You will get pure food, nothing to worry about,” the CM said.

School Education Minister Dipak Burman also defended the removal of eggs from the menu, arguing that vegetarian diets can adequately meet children’s nutritional requirements. “There are many people in our society and hundreds of millions across the globe who lead completely healthy lives on a vegetarian diet. Vegetarian meals possess sufficient nutritional value, providing all the essential nutrients required for physical growth and development. There is no logic behind the idea that children must consume eggs, especially to fulfil their nutritional needs,” Burman said.

More important that Andaa vs Jhanda its should be a discussion about :
a. Caloric Content
b. A balanced spread of Protein, Carbs and Fats
c. Easily sourced local products
d. In tune with the Seasonal Changes (This I think formed an important part of Indian/Vedic/Ayurvedic prescriptions of diet, which sadly has been lost with the advent of unabased imports and aping the Western Diet). I dont know if you remember childood days and changes according to season the Sambhar and Curry or evening meals Amma prepared!!
There is a huge problem in UK school meals being served kind of uninterrupted and uninterruptable (paraphrasing BallsunderMyer) for last 20-35 years has wrecked havoc with the health.
Obesity at the highest.
Ready Meals is the answer.
Red meat everyday.
DM, Hypertension, Cardiac Diseases, Bowel Cancer to name a few Rampant.
Struggling to provide Organ Transplant
Dare I continue!!!
So I think the discussion in the main stream media should be steered on these things and benefits of balanced diet.

SRajesh ji,

Most people whining about lack of eggs have never run an organisation.

Veg/Non Veg segregation is a logistical nightmare for a project of this scale.

Also the Govt is under no obligation to help them meet their (expensive) protein goals.

The goal should be the efficient delivery of nutritious midday meals

If some of the picky eaters want eggs/meat/fish, then please eat them at home.

If it is a curated gourmet meal that they are looking for on a daily basis, then perhaps a complete change from the govt run educational enterprise and an immediate transfer to such a premier establishment of learning, one that is capable of catering to their refined palates

Reminds me of the Govinda veg meals we used to get at US offices. This is the proper charity we need. Use your donations inside India for govt mandated causes not some stupid political stunts :)

Regarding eggs etc Many Indians do have poor and lazy veg food eating habits like always eating aloo ki sabji and that’s it , no green vegetables… so more needs to be done here and FOODMAPS should be stuck in every kitchen to make people aware.

After some sickness my old parents now eat eggs 2-3 (we do eat nonveg) times a week and increased fish intake and their health has markedly improved.

In big cities you don’t always get the best produce and variety but on the other hand you do get lot of choice in fruits and veggies to mix and match.

I mean variety should be there.
A balanced meal in. young age
And Chetakji point taken
I am not about Nen-Veg or Veg.
Satvik is good and we should inculcate the good habits in growing minds which they carry forward.
Remeber the millets, now they are being rebranded in the west as Magic Millets!! given the grwoing number of coeliac and other GI conditions!!
You cannot forget Amma's Rage Mudde or Ragi rotti or Jolada rotti or Navane akki!!
This will indirectly help the farmer as well
The whole thing id being hijacked by Secular Braindead folks given their undying love for all things Mughals!!
