Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Well most NATO countries charter An-124 as needed from a Russian company that operates them. For example, RAF has some sort of agreement where it can request to have two made available within 4-8 days of notice and two more the following week or something like that for any out-sized cargo (i.e. bigger than C-17 capacity).rahuldevnath wrote:Very Heavy Lift certainly comprises of An-124 class. But as far as I know, IAF right now is more interested in replacing / supplementing the Il-76MD, the C-17 is most probably like join IAF in near future. Very Heavy Lift Category transports, will also be eventually inducted but may be in limited numbers, something like what we did we did with Mi-26.
It's very important to note that the An-124 is used for delivering any of the fighters in Semi K Down, conditions, such as Su-30MKI. About 6 An-124's will give IAF that edge.
So it is not necessary for IAF to own one. They can setup a usage agreement and charter as needed (which is rare).
Whereas, C-17 sized planes are used much more frequently. C-17 can carry twice the payload of lL-76. Maybe 4-6 units is all that's required but which would greatly improve IAF's strategic airlift capability of large-sized heavy payloads. (I mean it has the payload & dimension capacity to carry the Arjun MBT.)
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
While there has been discussion about the C-17 and An-124 for heavy/very heavy lift capabilities, don't forget to add the C5 Galaxy which has a payload capacity far greater than the C-17 but less than the An-124.

Airbus beluga is small compared(in terms of swallowing capacity) to the An-124.

Kashmiri men mourn during the funeral of slain Indian army soldier Shabir Ahmed Malik at Dab Wakoora, northeast of Srinagar on March 24, 2009. Well attended funerals for militants, fighting Indian rule in Kashmir, are common but it is for the first time that an Indian soldier's death was mourned in a region where anti-India sentiments run deep. The kitting of the pukis was top notch.Imagine the kind of funding that goes into these ops!
Thuraya Phones,Garmin Receivers,Winter Clothing,Snow Boots,Painkilling Injections,UBGLs,....!They spend about 5+ lakhs per pig.Our average jawan gets half of that in annual salaries.
I can see someone weaving stories here...if we let them in...then we should have killed them much before they got a chance to fan out!The outfit wasn't carrying heavy weapons though...so most of the paras who died were seen first and ambushed or sniped.Maj.Rohit Sharma was shot from a vantage location.

A Garmin GPS receiver costs about $200 or so, a thuraya (of which the terrorists carried only 2) costs about $1000. (check prices here http://www.satphonestore.com/index.cfm?page=thuraya)Anshul wrote:Bhai...!It was BVR...so just counted what was WVR.

Morphine injections cost < $1 per dose. Chinese Kalashnikovs cost <$200 per piece when purchased in bulk. AK rounds are probably < 10 cents a round.
As long as they were not going through Siachen, winter outdoor clothing would cost < $500 per person (down jacket, down sleeping bag, woolen inner wear, woolen socks, winter boots).. All in all, I cant see Pakis having spent more than $1500 per terrorist on kit, add another $2000-$3000 for their compensation to the family and reward money. Overall cost for the entire operation, not just the kit, <2 lakhs per terrorist. This was a cheap operation for them..
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^Thats the upfront cost you see for a pig for one operation. They must have been trained and paid for this operation for a year at least. Then you need to take the cost of entire logistics of carrying out an operation like this including the supply chain. I am sure a dead pig doesnt comes cheap to terrorist company like ISI which must be funding this through the narcotics trade. Sustaining terrorists at some many front including in SWAT/NWFP/Afghanistan/Kashmir must cost enormous amount of money, a lot of which is paid unknowingly by US and others as part of the GWOT.
It would be interesting to work out the cost of a pig through his radicalization to meet the houris lifecycle. We can probably carry this discussion in some other and more relevant thread.
