Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
We still have our wrestlers and athletes to amuse!
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Mary Kom too! And would you believe it, Sania Mirza was allowed to take her mother as her coach, but Mary Kom hasn't been allowed her own coach because apparently he isn't accredited, instead she was asked to train under some idiot she has never worked with before.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Congrats to Saina! I expected her to win - she was clearly the better player on form. While Tine is a two time All England champion, she is past her peak now, and Saina on the other hand is on the level of the top 4 Chinese. Luckily each country can only send 3 players to the Olympics, and she was singularly responsible for one of them (Wang Shixian) not making it. Those who posted in the sports thread in June will remember the long match between Saina and her in the Indonesian open (which Saina won). That match cost that Chinese her almost sureshot London place too.
The next step will define whether Saina is really among the great Chinese rivals or still one level down - she faces Wang Yihan, against whom she has a 0-5 record. While that appears hopeless, on recent form she's much more a threat to them - she's never faced Wang Y recently, but has beaten Wang Shixian and All England champ Li Xuerui within the last 2 months - the first time she beat either of them. Lalmohan, shyamd and co - go to Wembley and make your presence felt in the semifinal!
Semifinal lineup:
Wang Yihan (1) vs Saina Nehwal (4)
Wang Xin (2) vs Li Xuerui (3)
If Saina wins the semis and final, I would not be surprised if the Chinese coach Li Yongbo (a former doubles legend) loses his job; he's already embroiled in controversy about The Great London 2012 Matchthrowing Saga and just publicly begged for forgiveness.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Atleast one more victory before Saina is guaranteed a medal?
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
It is going to be a tough one!!!
We have three Chinese and one Indian (Saina) in Semifinals.
Wang y h VS Saina Nehwal
Li x r VS Wang X
Saina if wins will be playing for Gold Medal and if she loses she will be playing for the Bronze medal.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Yeah, someone tweeted it is Saina vs China now.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
On current form, Li should beat Wang Xin. Saina needs to start fast against Wang Yihan. If she does win her semi, I fancy her chances against Li in the final. Li had been on a roll this year, not losing to any non-Chinese and to hardly even her compatriots, until that sequence was stopped by Saina, who defeated her in the Indonesian Open Super Series final.
Chinese plan will be, if Wang Yihan cannot beat Saina, do everything possible to tire her out so they can beat her in the final. They don't care who wins - they want gold at all costs. They will be somewhat panicky if the semifinal does not follow historical record and Saina does beat Wang Y for the first time - it will give her a psychological boost in the final because it will be upto her opponent to get that gold while the party are watching.
Saina already demonstrated she can come from a draining match to win - in the Indonesian open she beat Wang Shixian in a 90 minute match in QF, a Korean in the semi and then beat Li in a long match in the final. She's no longer overweight and lacking stamina, and it's the Chinese who start panicking if it doesn't go to plan.
Does anyone know the order of semifinal ? I'm certain if Saina plays first and wins that they'll order the 2nd semifinalists to play such that the one with a better chance against Saina wins - probably Li, even though Wang Xin has more experience.

Someone has a live feed of mixed doubles match featuring Paes-Mirza pair?
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Paes/Mirza lead 4-2 in furst set
Make that wins the first set 6-2 . That was fast.
Added further: broke Zimonjic/Ivanovic in the first game of 2nd set to go up 1-0

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Kashyap was bound to lose. He is only world #27 and made the QF, which means a top 8 level performance. He'll go far, just not now. I predict he'll be in the top 10 soon.
