Nato’s secretary general has said this week’s Madrid summit will agree the alliance’s most significant transformation for a generation, putting 300,000 troops at high readiness in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Jens Stoltenberg said the military alliance’s forces in the Baltic states and five other frontline countries would be increased “up to brigade levels” – doubled or trebled to between 3,000 and 5,000 troops.
That would amount to “the biggest overhaul of our collective defence and deterrence since the cold war,” Stoltenberg said before the meeting of the 30-country alliance, which runs from Tuesday to Thursday this week.
The rapid-reaction Nato Response Force currently numbers up to 40,000, and the proposed change amounts to a broad revision in response to Russian militarisation. Under the plans, Nato will also move stocks of munitions and other supplies farther east, a transition due to be completed in 2023.
The Norwegian secretary general conceded he could not make any promises about the progress of applications by Sweden and Finland to join Nato, because objections raised by Turkey to their membership remained unresolved.
Stoltenberg said Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, had agreed to meet the Swedish prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, and Finland’s president, Sauli Niinistö, on Tuesday in Madrid to try to resolve the issue.
But he played down hopes of a breakthrough at the meeting on the margins of the Nato event. “It’s too early to say what kind of progress you can make by the summit,” he told a press conference.
Turkey has said it will block the applications of Sweden and Finland unless it receives satisfactory assurances that the Nordic countries are willing to address what it regards as support for Kurdish groups it designates as terrorist organisations.

Something scary happened last week, something that could escalate quickly into a world war. A train from Moscow to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad was banned at the border by the Lithuanian authorities because it was carrying goods which are now sanctioned due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. An angry Kremlin, claiming that the EU was blockading its enclave, issued a statement that Moscow would respond in such a way that “citizens of the Baltic State would feel the pain”. Nikolai Patrushev, a former KGB spy, who is now the secretary of Russia’s Security Council and a favourite to succeed President Vladimir Putin, said Lithuania’s “hostile” actions showed that Russia could not trust the West, which he said had broken written agreements over Kaliningrad. Lithuania’s Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte hit back by saying that there was no blockade as people and most goods could easily travel as normal. Her country was simply applying agreed EU sanctions on Russia. She added that it was “ironic” to hear rhetoric about allegations of violations of international treaties from a country which has violated possibly every international treaty. Diplomatic temperatures soared. Moscow’s problem is that after the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, its enclave of Kaliningrad, previously called Konigsberg, an area of Germany captured by Soviet troops during World War II, found itself surrounded by two countries, Lithuania and Poland, which soon became part of NATO and the European Union. The enclave of one million Russian citizens could then only be supplied by air or by sea from St Petersburg. In July 2003, Russia signed an agreement with Lithuania that allowed its citizens and goods to travel to Kaliningrad using the train that ran from Moscow through Belarus and Lithuania. For ordinary Russians it was initially difficult to accept that they needed a transit visa to travel from one part of Russia to another, and some considered it a national humiliation. Nevertheless, until 17 June, when European sanctions started, covering a wide list from coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology, likely to affect between 40%-50% of all imports to the enclave, the system worked well without any problems.
As expected, Russia’s foreign ministry summoned Lithuania’s charge d’affairs in Moscow to protest against the “provocative” and “openly hostile” measures. “If cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian Federation via Lithuania is not fully restored in the near future”, said Russia’s foreign ministry, “then Russia reserves the right to take any actions to protect its national interests”. It’s not yet clear what the actions might be to protect the interests of Kaliningrad, a key location on the shores of the Baltic Sea, the base of Russia’s Baltic Fleet where Moscow has already deployed nuclear-capable Iskander missiles.
Few expect Russia to immediately attack Lithuania as a result of the ban on cargo, but the incident has brought attention yet again to another possible access for Russia to link up with its marooned enclave. This is a 60-mile-long slither of flat land, squeezed between NATO members Lithuania and Poland, and Moscow-ally Belarus. Called the “Suwalki Gap”, or “Suwalki Corridor”, this slip of land has long given NATO commanders sleepless nights. Should President Putin decide to invade, Suwalki would be perfect for advancing Russian tanks. If Putin gave the order to sweep across Suwalki, his forces would initially split the Baltics from the rest of NATO before the West could do anything about it, creating a perfect land corridor to Kaliningrad. Such a move would, of course, result in an immediate face-off between Moscow and NATO’s nuclear-armed members, pushing the world to the brink of world-ending confrontation. No wonder that many analysts call the Suwalki Gap the “most dangerous place on earth”.

Russia to Exit International Space Station ‘After 2024,’ Space Chief Confirms

Russia will withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) “after 2024” and build its own orbiting space outpost, the newly appointed chief of state space agency Roscosmos said Tuesday.
"I think that by that time we will start putting together a Russian orbital station," Roscosmos chief Yury Borisov said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the space program the main "priority."
"Of course, we will fulfill all our obligations to our partners, but the decision to leave this station after 2024 has been made," Borisov added.
Borisov told Putin that Russia’s space industry is in a "difficult” situation, adding that he would seek "to raise the bar, and, first of all, to provide the Russian economy with the necessary space services," pointing to navigation, communication and data transmission, among other things.
Also on Tuesday, Roscosmos revealed a model of Russia’s orbital station.
Citing an unnamed industry source, Interfax reported that Russia’s new space station would cost $6 billion.
The ISS, which was launched in 1998 by the Russian and U.S. space agencies, has been a rare area of cooperation between Moscow and Washington amid sharply deteriorating relations.
Earlier this month, NASA announced it was resuming flights to the ISS with Russia.
A senior NASA official on Tuesday said the United States hasn't received "any official word" from Russia on its plans to quit the ISS.

Russia Deploys Hypersonic Missiles to Kaliningrad

Russia on Thursday relocated three warplanes equipped with hypersonic missiles to its exclave of Kaliningrad on the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Wedged between EU and NATO members Lithuania and Poland that have firmly backed Ukraine in the conflict with Moscow, the heavily militarized region of Kaliningrad does not share a land border with Russia.
On Thursday, "three Mig-31i aircraft with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles were relocated to the Chkalovsk airfield in the Kaliningrad region," Russia's Defense Ministry said in a statement.
It said that they will be on "round-the-clock combat duty."
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who unveiled the Kinzhal missile in 2018, has termed it "an ideal weapon" that flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it extremely difficult for missile defenses to intercept.
Russia in June clashed with Lithuania after Vilnius banned the rail transit of sanctioned goods from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad.

Kyiv [Ukraine]: After Ukraine’s Defence Ministry’s tweet depicting Goddess Kali morphed over a blast fume, sparked outrage among netizens, the ministry deleted the post.
On April 30, Ukraine’s Defence Ministry tweeted with the caption “Work of art,” and shared a picture of a blast with an improvised picture by Ukrainian artist Maksym Palenko.
In the picture, the artist depicted the blast in a unique yet offensive blend of famous American actress Marilyn Monroe in her ‘flying skirt’ pose with the face and detailing resembling Hindu Goddess ‘Maa Kali’. However, the Defence Ministry of Ukraine later deleted the tweet after facing outrage.
Minutes after posting the picture, the tweet received a massive backlash, forcing the Ministry of Defence to delete the Twitter post.

New Delhi: An Indian entity has figured in a blacklist brought out by Ukraine against what Kyiv claims to be of “individuals and companies that are abetting Russia’s open aggression” against its citizens.
NBC Bearings, a part of C.K Birla Group, figures in the list brought out by Ukraine’s National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP).
The list contains 26 entities primarily from Europe, the US and China.
NBC Bearings makes it onto the list along with five individuals, all senior executives at the company.
National Engineering Industries Limited, the company which makes NBC Bearings, declined to comment on the Ukraine’s listing, but told ThePrint all its exports “are as per the guidelines established by the Government of India”.
“Apart from its business in India, it has a long history of exporting its products to more than 30 countries across five continents for various applications like automotive, railways, industrial segments and other non-military applications,” the company said.
The Ukrainian black list may be discussed by the European Union’s (EU) foreign affairs ministers, Politico reported.
War & Sanctions, a public database supported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Agency on Corruption Prevention, makes, “public the lists of individuals and companies that are abetting Russia’s open aggression against Ukraine”.
The database includes a listing of companies that continue to trade with Russia, calling them as “International Sponsors of War”. These companies or entities, according to the portal, provide “the public and private sector with goods and services of critical purpose”.
The list reports that bearings valued at roughly $12.3 million were exported during the year 2022-23 by NBC Bearings to Russia. Apart from NBC Bearings, senior executives — Rohit Saboo (President & CEO), Sanjeev Taparia (Sales & Marketing Director), Gourav Chaturvedi (CFO), Shailesh Patni (Head of Internal Sales) and Rajan Jain (COO) — were named in the Ukraine individual blacklist submitted to the EU.
NBC Bearings, a brand of bearings manufactured by the National Engineering Industries (NEI) Ltd, was established in 1946. A part of the $2.4 billion C.K. Birla Group, NEI claims to be India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of bearings, with a production of over 200 million bearings a year.
Headquartered in Jaipur, NEI has five manufacturing plants in Newai, Manesar, Vadodara and Jaipur. Its nearly 2,300-plus variants of bearings are applied across automotives, railways, aerospace and industrial sectors and are exported to over 30 countries, according to the company website.
Russia’s needs for bearings
Bearings are a critical component in the production of all moving vehicles, from tanks to aircrafts and even ships and missiles. More importantly, bearings are integral to the civilian industry as, “Russia’s rail-dependent economy finds the production and repair of trains directly impaired,” reported a recent study by the Centre for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS).
The study identified the paucity of high-quality bearings produced by Western companies as a critical vulnerability for the Kremlin.
“In 2020, for instance, Russia imported over $419 million worth of ball bearings, around 55 per cent of which originated in Europe and North America,” it stated. “Following the start of the invasion, major western producers of bearings exited Russia and ended their sales there.”

Prigozhin has sharply criticized Russian military leadership for weeks, calling top brass incompetent, even traitorous. He has also refused to sign a contract to cooperate with the Russian Defense Ministry.
Tensions between Russia's defense ministry and Wagner escalated dramatically Friday when Prigozhin alleged that Russian forces had attacked Wagner field camps in eastern Ukraine. Late Friday, Prigozhin issued video taped remarks that appeared to call for a rebellion against Russian military leadership, but he was characteristically vague in defining his plans.
Prigozhin said early Saturday that Wagner forces had left Ukraine for Russia and had reached the city of Rostov-on-Don, which is home to the Russian military headquarters for the southern region and oversees the fighting in Ukraine. In an intelligence meeting, Britain's Ministry of Defense said Prigozhin's forces appeared to control the military headquarters.

What is the Wagner group?
The Wagner group is a group of entities that operate as a private military company, or PMC. These PMCs can be hired by governments for security or combat services.
They aren't uncommon: The United States has used private military companies during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, there are differences between the commonly accepted definition of a PMC and Russia's version of the companies.
"In NATO countries, in Western countries, the main logic behind using private contractors when it comes to security and defense policy has been the flexibility of resources," said Dr. András Rácz, a Russian expert at the German Council on Foreign Relations. "However, on the Russian side, the logic has been different. Russia, from the beginning, perceived these companies as a way of exerting state power in a covert way."

The boss of Russia's Wagner group has said on his Telegram channel that he has agreed to "stop" the advancement of his troops towards Moscow.
In a surprise move, Yevgeny Prigozhin said his fighters were returning to field camps in Ukraine and did not want to "spill Russian blood".
Hours earlier, he had called for a rebellion against the Russian army.
In response, President Vladimir Putin had pledged to punish those who had "betrayed" Russia.
The Wagner Group is a private army of mercenaries that has been fighting alongside the regular Russian army in Ukraine.
Tension had been growing between them over how the war has been fought, with Prigozhin launching vocal criticisms of Russia's military leadership in recent months.
The agreement to dramatically de-escalate the situation came after Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko held talks with Prigozhin, according to Russian TV channel Rossiya 24.

But UK doesn't have any F16's!

It's reported to be basic training followed by advanced training on 4th gen fighters, using simulators, AJTs (mimicking F16s). Training on actual F16s will be only if they (the europeans) give some to Ukraine, which they will do only if the US gives the go-ahead or orders them to do so.
