The latest border skirmish between NATO and Haqqani network fighters has reduced the possibility of US-Haqqani network rapprochement. Haqqani network fighters who fired at NATO were not targeted by NATO in an incident where the parties offered conflicting assessments.

"We were firing at a NATO patrol for over two hours with 12.7mm guns and Mortar and NATO did not even fire a shot back at us" Said Apdul Mujahid a Haqqani network fighter. "This level of disrespect for the Mujahids and a basic denial of their rights to 72 houris will make it very difficult for Haqqani network to participate in peace talks" he added.

However NATO general James T'fpe offered a conflicting explanation. "Our patrol came under heavy small arms fire and mortar fire and we checked with our Pakistani tactical co-ordination officer, who immediately denied that the post was Pakistani and such a Pakistani border post existed at all. Based on the speed of his denial and the History of Pakistan army being liars and not wishing to provoke an international incident, we assumed that we were being fired upon by the Pakistani army as usual and refrained from returning fire" he said. However, his version was contradicted by Apdul Mujahid who came out with additional details. He claimed that the post was flying a black talipaan flag, and not the usual white Pakistan army flag. He added "Despite repeated threats from NATO to disengage, unlike Pakistan army, we did not scurry back across the border and continued to engage them. How could they mistake us for the Army?" He asked.

NATO sources from the border patrol, who decided to be anonymous because they were not authorized to speak claimed that the post was in fact a Pakistan army post. "Intelligence was faulty about whether the post was occupied by serving Pakistani jernails or the same Jernails working overtime and claiming to retired and rogue ISI. So we decided to play it safe" he claimed. He further added that "Radio intercepts indicated that a Pakistani captain just had a baby, we were unsure if he was firing in the air to celebrate". Pakistan tactical co-ordination officer also contradicted NATO comments "I really did in fact check with Pakistan army and such a post did not exist. It wasnt one of our usual 'Kasab is not Pakistani' denials" Upon being contacted for comments, the spokesman for ISPR, Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said that Pakistan Army units were instructed by General Ashphuck Kayani that Pakistan army could now provide covering fire in support of taalipaan without checking with the chain of command, because NATO was unlikely to retaliate.
