Indians now third largest immigrant group in the US
Saturday, 24 August 2013 | S Rajagopalan | Washington
http://www.dailypio neer.com/ world/indians- now-third- largest-immigran t-group-in- the-us.html
Indians have emerged as the third largest immigrant group in the United States after Mexicans and Chinese, with their numbers touching 1.9 million as of 2011.
The Indian-born population in America has grown by over 150 times in
size since 1960, says a new study from the Washington-based Migration
Policy Institute.
Back in 1960, America had just about 12,000 Indian-born immigrants,
accounting for less than 0.5 per cent of the total immigrant population
of 9.7 million immigrants at that time. Now, the US immigrant population stands at 40.4 million, with Indians representing almost 5 per cent of the total.
“As a group, immigrants from India are better educated, more likely to
have strong English language skills and arrive on employment-based
visas, and are less likely to live below the federal poverty line than
the overall foreign-born population,” says the study.
In 2011, India was the second most common country of origin for
international students at US institutions of higher learning, after
China.
Although the Indian immigrants are scattered all over America, more
than one-quarter of them live in just three metropolitan areas: Greater
New York, Chicago and San Jose in California’s Silicon Valley.
Nearly one-third of the community resides in just two states:
California and New Jersey. California alone accounts for 21 per cent of
the Indian population, followed by New Jersey (11 per cent), Texas (9
per cent); New York (8 per cent), and Illinois (7 per cent).
According to the figures cited by the study, more than 29 per cent of
employed Indian-born men worked in information technology occupations,
while 19 per cent of employed Indian-born women worked in management,
business and finance.
In 2012, more than 66,000 Indian-born immigrants were granted US legal
permanent residency or green cards, the study says, noting that compared to other immigrant groups, Indians have made it largely through the employment-based channel.
About 43,000 Indian immigrants became naturalised US citizens in 2012.
The share of Indian immigrants who have naturalised (47 per cent) is
said to be slightly greater than that of the overall foreign-born
population (45 per cent).

That is it. All this democracy, liberty, free market, tolerance, all this is bakwaas and is a shroud to cover up the basis of what the US actually is.
this is very close to what i have seen. nice observation.

These three books illuminate different aspects of World War II using diaries, letters, and memoirs to capture what the war meant for people caught up in it. Klein’s monumental book focuses on what he calls “the greatest industrial expansion in modern history.” As the war began in Europe in 1939, the armed forces of the United States were small and undernourished, and the public was wary of any involvement. President Franklin Roosevelt pushed U.S. industry to get ready for a war that he knew would come. Klein details the impact this had on Washington -- the personality clashes, the interagency feuds, the tensions between government and big business -- and also demonstrates the enormous social impact of mass mobilization on the rest of society. Labor unions were challenged to moderate their demands out of patriotic duty, and African Americans were drawn into the mainstream work force, leading to hostile reactions from some white workers and even race riots in Detroit. In effect, Klein’s book narrates the birth pangs of the modern American state.
With The Guns at Last Light, Atkinson concludes his celebrated trilogy on World War II. The first two volumes covered the Allied campaigns in North Africa and Italy. In this one, Atkinson is on more familiar territory: the buildup to the Normandy landings and the drive to Berlin, with its frustrating setbacks. Most of his readers will know this story. Yet Atkinson still manages to keep it fresh, with a talent for narrative and a mastery of detail that make this book one of the great contributions to the war’s history. He has an impressive command of the high-level strategic debates, coalition politics, and logistical feats that shaped the war, and he brings them to life with the accumulation of small details: U.S. General George Patton’s exuberance at the prospect of battle, the inventory of personal effects found on corpses, the U.S. decision to excuse American soldiers who shot captured SS guards in cold blood at the concentration camp in Dachau, the bedbugs and caviar at the Yalta conference.
Atkinson also describes the sexual temptations that greeted American GIs in France and the dire consequences in terms of prostitution and venereal disease. Roberts zeroes in on this aspect of the war in a remarkable study that complicates the view of the liberation of France and casts doubt on the moral character of the vaunted “greatest generation” of Americans. She vividly depicts the impact of the influx of hundreds of thousands of GIs on French society, especially on French women. One of the book’s most troubling revelations is the way that U.S. authorities wrongly blamed the rapes of French women on African American soldiers. Roberts demonstrates how officials excused appalling conduct by referring to the stereotype of the licentious French woman -- blaming victims for the sexual assaults they suffered. The book is marred by a tendency to overgeneralize and to overinterpret observations gleaned from letters and diaries. Nonetheless, it is a powerful reminder of the dark side of the liberation.

How Moral Revolutions Happen (They Had A Nightmare)
But most of these writers are barely polemical. The tone is concessive, gentleman-scholarly, mild, punctuated by patronizing sighs and arched eyebrows, to add some tone. Of course slavery is … unfortunate; but you can’t expect this old world to be perfect so we must make the best of it together. Does anyone have a plausible, practical plan for abolishing slavery, starting tomorrow? No. So what are we talking about? Just a bunch of Northerners who won’t be personally called on to do anything so painful. Yet they expect Southerners to give up most of their wealth, and destroy the value of their land in the process? Is that plausible? Abolitionism is so wrong not because slavery is so right – it isn’t! – but because utopianism must always fail. Indeed, it must always cause suffering, by the law of unintended consequences. Better to respect existing property rights, even though we know that if you look far enough in the past, there will always be ugliness at the root. It is the wonder of human institutions that beauty may flourish even from ugliness! (It is only utopians who do not appreciate this!)

NSA urged to open its files on 1961 death of UN chief Dag Hammarskjold in Congo plane crash
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dag_Hammarskj%C3%B6ld
America’s National Security Agency may hold crucial evidence about the cause of the plane crash in 1961 that killed the United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold, one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the Cold War, an independent commission which reviewed the case said on Monday.
The Swedish-born diplomat died as he was attempting to broker a ceasefire in the newly independent Congo. The crash of his DC-6 aircraft near Ndola airport in modern-day Zambia has bred a rash of conspiracy theories.
A four-member commission reported on Monday that the inquiry should be reopened, saying the only way of establishing what happened would be for the NSA to release recordings it was believed to have of the final communications from the aircraft. The commission lodged Freedom of Information requests which were rejected on security grounds, but has appealed.
Commission chairman Sir Stephen Sedley, presenting the report in The Hague, said it was a “near certainty” that the NSA was recording radio transmissions from the African airfield near where Hammarskjold’s plane crashed.
The involvement of British officers in commanding the initial inquiries, which provided much of the information about the condition of the plane and the examination of the bodies, has led some to suggest a conflict of interest.[10][15] The official report dismissed a number of pieces of evidence that would have supported the view that Hammarskjöld was assassinated.[11] Some of these dismissals have been controversial, such as the conclusion that bullet wounds could have been caused by bullets exploding in a fire. Expert tests have questioned this conclusion, arguing that exploding bullets could not break the surface of the skin.[10][11] Major C. F. Westell, a ballistics authority, said, "I can certainly describe as sheer nonsense the statement that cartridges of machine guns or pistols detonated in a fire can penetrate a human body."[16] He based his statement on a large scale experiment that had been done to determine if military fire brigades would be in danger working near munitions depots. Other Swedish experts conducted and filmed tests showing that bullets heated to the point of explosion nonetheless did not achieve sufficient velocity to penetrate their box container.[1
On 19 August 1998, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, chairman of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), stated that recently uncovered letters had implicated the British MI5, the American CIA, and then South African intelligence services in the crash.[18] One TRC letter said that a bomb in the aircraft's wheel bay was set to detonate when the wheels came down for a landing. Tutu said that they were unable to investigate the truth of the letters or the allegations that South Africa or Western intelligence agencies played a role in the crash. The British Foreign Office suggested that they may have been created as Soviet misinformation or disinformation.[19]
On 29 July 2005, Norwegian Major General Bjørn Egge gave an interview to the newspaper Aftenposten on the events surrounding Hammarskjöld's death. According to General Egge, who had been the first UN officer to see the body, Hammarskjöld had a hole in his forehead, and this hole was subsequently airbrushed from photos taken of the body. It appeared to Egge that Hammarskjöld had been thrown from the plane, and grass and leaves in his hands might indicate that he survived the crash – and that he had tried to scramble away from the wreckage. Egge does not claim directly that the wound was a gunshot wound.[20]
In his speech to the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly on 23 September 2009, Colonel Gaddafi called upon the Libyan president of UNGA, Ali Treki, to institute a UN investigation into the assassinations of Congolese prime minister, Patrice Lumumba, who was overthrown in 1960 and murdered the following year, and of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld in 1961.[21]
According to a dozen witnesses interviewed by Swedish aid worker Göran Björkdahl in the 2000s (decade), Hammarskjöld's plane was shot down by another aircraft. Björkdahl also reviewed previously unavailable archive documents and internal UN communications. He believes that there was an intentional shootdown for the benefit of mining companies like Union Minière.[22][23][24] A US intelligence officer who was stationed at an electronic surveillance station in Cyprus stated that he heard a cockpit recording from Ndola. In the cockpit recording a pilot talks of closing in on the DC6 in which Hammarskjold was traveling, guns are heard firing, and then the words "I've hit it".[25]

R ji,
A PIO getting crowned Miss America should ordinarily be a minor issue.I am sure there were N number of ethnicities who became Miss america before this. Massa is a land of migrants after all.
But this deluge of racism is what makes this issue major.
If there was no racist reaction - I am 100% sure our "aspirational" news rags would have gone to town with profuse front page headlines showing it as arrival of Indian beauty on Amreeki stage. They already did this even recently when Deepika Padukone was casted into a Hollywood movie Fast and Furious X( I forgot number).
Now finally there is racism in picture . Let's see if our media muddles the carefully crafted "promise of an american dream" of all these years by prominently commenting on the various real manifestations of racism in everyday Massa.

The new Miss America is not Muslim -- but so what if she were?
In fact, there is something dumber than holding a Miss America contest in this day and age -- and that is the yahoos who were offended about its most recent winner, an Indian American named Nina Davuluri. She’s not a real American, some say. She’s a terrorist; more like “Miss Al Qaeda,” others scoff. Right after the anniversary of 9/11 no less, the easily offended cry. And, of course, some say “Muslim” President Obama is to blame. And that’s hardly the worst of it. For that, check BuzzFeed and Jezebel for roundups of the most wrongheaded and vile tweets.“The ludicrous thing about the Miss America pageant, which took place in Atlantic City, N.J., Sunday night, is that anyone treats it as meaningful, rather than a retro institution clinging to the corrosive idea that female accomplishment is most palatable when it is packaged in Botox, bleach and bikinis,” writes The Times’ Robin Abcarian. Hear, hear. And yet, this retro ritual has provided us with a window into the present-day United States, where ignorant and/or uneducated Americans lurk, spewing hate and nonsense with reckless abandon.Among the most persistent claims from the uninformed is that Davuluri is Muslim. She isn't, but so what if she were?“The demonization of any minority group runs contrary to the spirit of this great country,” wrote Scott C. Alexander in a 2012 Op-Ed in our Opinion pages. He went on: “In fact, we need to go even further and declare that Muslims the world over are an important and vital part of the one human family, with whom the rest of this same family needs to partner and build relationships of trust for the sake of us all.”Don’t want to hear it from the “liberal L.A. Times”? Hear out this U.S. soldier, who was caught on ABC’s hidden-camera show “What Would You Do?” [via Upworthy].
“You have a choice to shop anywhere, just like you have a choice to practice your religion anywhere,” he says to a customer refusing to place an order with a Muslim cashier. “That’s the reason I wear the uniform, so anyone can live free in this country. Leave the man alone.”Skip to the 4:50 mark to watch the interaction, or better yet, watch the whole thing and learn some things -- such as compassion, and acceptance, and what it means to be a real American. But back to Nina Davuluri, who is not Muslim. The Atlantic’s Alexander Abad-Santos has put together a dummies guide to understanding the first Indian American Miss America. It should clear up any lingering misconceptions. And it’s super easy to understand. There are pictures and everything

Official, academic, media and entertainment America have difficulty in acknowledging Hinduism, generally speaking. Even though Islam is considered adversarial at a certain level, or by a significant section of the population, it is still recognised as a religion.
Without going far off topic, there was an episode of a fairly good series called "Blue Bloods"(police show) , in which conversion to Islam and relationship with a Moslem figured. There was even a discussion at the dinner table about the consequences of conversion on families, rearing children, values etc.
Now, if such a situation with Hinduism were featured, the tenor and content of the discussion would have to be different. You would have to deal with pantheism, following dual religion, quotes from the Bhagavad Gita, Hindus having little or no difficulty going to churches or celebrating Christmas et al. The whole 'clash of religions' concept would be more complicated and intricate. And hence more confusing to the average prime time American viewer. Islam is very simple.

What happened to secularism - not pseudo but real one within US. US is the most powerful efficient productive industrial and only superpower so aren't citizens progressive enough to be secular.
US citizens don't mind funding secularism in India but can't live secular lifestyle even at this day and age? Why this duplicity?
US citizens are funding secularism for decades so they are like that only won't do.

DC_Convoy
Last year the American Truckers Association prepared a report for Congress highlighting the susceptibility of the nation’s just-in-time delivery system, the majority of which is made possible by the transport and delivery of freight. In the event of a catastrophic disaster such as a war that drives fuel prices through the roof or even a natural disaster such as a solar flare that renders electronic trucks inoperable, there would be a “a swift and devastating impact on the food, healthcare, transportation, waste removal, retail, manufacturing, and financial sectors,” according to the report.
The backbone of commerce in the United States is the truck drivers who spend long hours on the road ensuring our very survival as a modern society.
But with fuel prices continuing to rise, wages dropping, jobs becoming harder to find, and rampant corruption in Washington D.C. furthering the country’s economic death spiral, America’s truck drivers, like the majority of our fellow citizens, are fed up.
Between October 11th and 13th they have called for a general strike, asking truck drivers around the country to refuse to haul freight, a move that could carry with it a significant impact on the American economy.
The protest calls for truckers to make their way to Washington D.C. in a massive convoy in an effort to call attention to, among other things, the Benghazi cover-up, the recent attack which killed 25 members of SEAL Team 6, ever rising fuel prices, and claims that President Obama has engaged in treasonous crimesNOOOOOOOOOOOOO...
Moreover, they’ve requested that the American people join them in solidarity by not shopping or engaging in any economic activity that benefits the government or their corporate interests.
The American people are sick and tired of the corruption that is destroying America! We therefore declare a GENERAL STRIKE on the weekend of October 11-13, 2013! Truck drivers will not haul freight! Americans can strike in solidarity with truck drivers!
Breaker 1 9 calling on all Trucker to shut America down for three days October 11-13. The American people are bleeding out with no relief in sight, It is time to change the NEWS. Let us show our elected officials that we are 100% fed up with corruption and the blatant disregard of the Constitution that they swore to defend.
My fellow Patriot this effort is to support the truckers in a major shut down of America in a 3 day strike October 11th thru 13th.
Obamacare will be in effect and most people will be ready to take action. No commerce on those days stock up on items that you will need. No banking no shopping no money transactions. It does not matter If a million or 50 roll through DC in this effort. Congress will listen to We The People. Which is remove Obama from office for crimes of treason and misdemeanors. We want Congressional hearing on Benghazi and Seal Team 6. Louis Learner put in jail. No amnesty, remove all Muslims in our government that do not uphold the Constitution. Remove Eric Holder from office for crimes against the people and the Constitution. Last but not least is Fuel prices. - Via: The Truckers to Shutdown America Facebook Page
The protest comes on the heels of a massive biker rally held in Washington D.C., and other grassroots efforts to hold the government to account for various Constitutional transgressions including everything from stripping Americans of their right to bear arms, to forced health care mandates soon to be implemented across the country (with exemptions for members of Congress and corporations with insider access, of course).
Calls of accountability have grown louder over the years from all political sides, starting most notably with the Tea Party movement and progressing to Occupy Wall Street.
The corruption and need for real change in America’s government has transcended political lines.
If the hundreds of thousands of truckers across America who keep our delivery systems running efficiently were to join together and stop hauling freight for even a week, the impact would be devastating and could not be ignored.
There’d be no food on the shelves, no fuel at our gas stations, and no medical supplies at our pharmacies and hospitals.
Congress and the President, who would like nothing more than to be perceived as our saviors and benefactors, would have no choice but to address the concerns of freight haulers, because the American people would feel the effects of the protest directly. And, chances are they’d be in the streets protesting themselves because of lack of access to essential goods they can’t live without.
We may often feel as if we, as individuals, have no power against the mighty United States government, but as Karl Denninger points out, we have much more power than we think.
If we get just 10% of America on board the entire game changes.
Especially when the business world — and government — realize that the next one is Black Friday weekend.
Just 10% of Americans can change the course of history, much like they did during the Revolutionary War.
Whether it happens in October, during Black Friday sales this November, or at some point in the future, this seemingly untenable situation is coming to a head.
Robert Kennedy may have said it best:
A revolution is coming — a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough — But a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character; we cannot alter its inevitability. - Robert Kennedy, Senate Floor, May 9, 1966
The snowball in America continues to roll down the hill, gaining speed and mass.

Does not matter how much of racism comes and from what side. It just shows rabid social abusive habits that are terrible behaviour for the only superpower and most industrious productive society. This is really terrible medieval pattern.
My heart goes to communities at the receiving end of barbaric racism in USA. Everyone should worry about this.
At this day and age if there is racism then it is job of majority Christians to see to it that racism within is smashed out. Everything else is merely excuses and beating around the bush - including this is racism of majority whaat to do if its uncontrollable. This is 2013.
Indian American community, barely 1% of America, don't have to go around finding who is firing from whose shoulder.

One odd thing in the Navy Yard shooting incident is until a day after the perpetrator was killed, the media was not told it was shotgun that was used. All earlier reprots claimed it was AR-15 type automatic rifle.
If that is the level of knowledge on military premises think of the levels elsewhere.
And there is no remorse in the reporters when they do a 180 and boldly present the news as if its just breaking news.

Town of Leith, population 24, has sought outside help amid news that a white supremacist group plans to call it home.
The tiny town of Leith in North Dakota is bracing itself for a potentially turbulent weekend. Its 24-strong population is set to be overrun by opposing busloads of neo-Nazis attempting to create a white supremacist community there and their anti-racist detractors.
Jeff Schoep, commander of the American National Socialist Movement (NSM), is preparing to travel from Detroit to Leith to hold a town-hall meeting and press conference on Sunday afternoon. On the NSM website, he describes the trip as a "gesture of goodwill", but goes on to say ominously that the aim is to "plant the seeds of National Socialism in North Dakota".
Anti-racist activists are also expected to descend on Leith from other parts of North Dakota and neighbouring Minnesota. "We cannot accept this racist hatred they are bringing here – Leith is in crisis and is crying out for help," one of the organisers, Jeremy Kelly, told the Bismarck Tribune.
For the residents of Leith, the prospect of a weekend filled with white supremacist grandstanding is highly unwelcome. The town mayor, Ryan Schock, told the Guardian "people are very concerned. They do not want people to come to this town who have hate in them."
Leith's conundrum began when a newcomer called Paul Craig Cobb began buying up deserted plots of land two years ago, accumulating 12 plots in total. Last month it was revealed by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors right-wing extremism, that Cobb, 61, is in fact a white supremacist wanted in Canada for promoting hatred in a blog.
It was also disclosed that he had moved to Leith in the hope of quietly constructing a neo-Nazi community along with allies in the National Socialist Movement and White Aryan Resistance (WAR) (*nice acronym!). He is in the process of transferring some of the properties to Schoep, a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard called Tom Metzger, and to April Gaede, founder of the neo-Nazi group National Vanguard.
Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law Center said Cobb's attempt to form an extremist community was in line with previous efforts to set up such collectives in Idaho and Montana. "Cobb has probably gone further than anyone before him in pursuing this white supremacist dream," she said.
The publicity surrounding Cobb's plans in Leith is likely to put a stop to his acquisition of any further land in the area, as local property owners are now wary of dealing with him. But there is little that can be done, Beirich said, to force him to give up the plots he already owns.
Leith residents are trying a variety of different moves to encourage him to leave town and have created a defence fund to pay for legal fees. One potential tactic is to have his house condemned under local amenity laws – Cobb's property is not linked up to water or sewer services.
A more extreme move that is being discussed would be to abandon Leith's status as a town before neo-Nazi supporters get close to outnumbering the other residents and thus controlling the town hall.
In a statement, Schoep accused "far left extremists" of trying to drive Cobb from his home. "Craig Cobb is not alone," he said, "and will not be driven out, or forced to leave. Legal paperwork is being drafted to insure the civil rights of Mr Cobb, and other new residents of Leith will not be violated."

Glad Obama is realising it now atleast.
So can we work on fixing the domestic issues instead of the propping up the Sunni Islamic world!

now its different isn't it? However no comments on nature of partners, 'global' reserves( - not 'international'??), 'dual threat' too -especially if all the above are exclusive. Such are intrigues of global politics.Obama, meanwhile, laid out a rather modest account of American "core interests" in the Middle East and North Africa: countering military aggression against U.S. partners in the region, protecting global energy reserves, and confronting the dual threats of terrorism and nuclear proliferation.

Indian God and Goddesses’ presence in the US

Last month while preparing to go to the US for spending some time with my son and
daughter-in- law there, I asked them whether they wanted something from
India. Both seemed to be satisfied with clothes, paintings or idols
they had carried away earlier from India. I also tried to remember the
things I carried for my children in the last twelve years.
Knowing that my
grandson Dhruv has heard and read the stories of Ramayana, Mahabharata
and other stories of Indian history, from his very childhood, I thought
it would be suitable to carry one framed photo of Ram, Lakshman and
Hanuman to please him. While uncovering the luggage, I found that the
glass of the picture was broken badly. Although there was no damage to
the picture. All the goods, clothes and food items were safe, only that
glass was broken. I was searching a place in that big house, where the
picture could be kept or hung. Then I put it in the kitchen. In evening
when I was entering from the main gate of the house, I saw the picture
on a rack at the entrance gate only. I was happy to see that my
daughter-in- law had put it in a proper place. I saw a good and special
painting of Ganesha was hanging on the wall just above the picture of
Ram-Lakshman and Hanuman. I felt satisfied.
In that posh area of
Middleton City (Madison) there were a hundred or more than that
independent houses. The area is not much older. Last time (8 years
before) when I visited that place, there were few houses in that area,
but this time I found almost all the vacant plots were covered with
beautiful houses with different architects. There were about ten houses
belonging to Indian families. The number is not small when most of the
houses belong to Americans. I visited two Indian houses. There I found
the place of worship where the idols or picture of Indian Gods and
Goddesses were kept. The housewife Premlata, PhD in Chemistry,
introduced each one of them with the reference to their travelling
stories from India. She told me that her parents used to visit US once a year. At their every visit, they brought one idol or picture of God and Goddesses. I found at least one picture or painting of some God hanging in every (five) bed room or corridor. It was obvious that when
entering into the house, one can understand that the house belongs to an Indian family. They could not guess so by the clothes or the language,
because with the clothing they have also adopted the American
pronunciation and accent. Thank God they have not changed clothes or
faces of Gods and Goddesses of India. The reason may be that the God and Goddesses have travelled from India without the US visa and passport.
Most of the Indian
youth worship the Hindu Gods and Goddesses in their houses and in
temples too. There are one or two big temples in each town and city of
the US. The number of small temples are rather less. The big temples are the place of different kinds of Hindu’s activities apart from the
worship of the Gods and Goddesses. Ten years ago, we visited the famous
temple of Chicago. Almost all the Gods and Goddesses were placed in that temple. Even the navgrah were there. Visitors were going around those navgrah. We also followed them. In a corner three persons of a family, husband,
wife and one son were sitting on the floor. Each person was holding one
small book in their hands and one priest was sitting with them. When we
went nearer to them we could hear the part of story of “Satya Narayan
Katha” in English. In India we have been hearing the katha from our childhood. The difference was that in India only the priest reads
loudly, explains and elaborates the story. After finishing every chapter priest used to blow konch. In the US temples the priest does not read
all the seven chapters of the katha. He asks the listeners to
read the chapters one by one. We also sat there. There was no konch
blowing. At the end of the seven chapters priest distributed some
sweets.
We attended two
marriage ceremonies in that big temple during our next visit. Priests of the US have made the rituals very simple and easy. I saw a marriage
ceremony in which the groom was American and the bride was south Indian. The groom was wearing dhoti-kurta and turban also. Of course,
presented by in-laws only. He performed all the rituals asked by the
priest. In another ceremony the priest did not know the rituals very
well. When asked by the parents of the bride, priest used to say- “then
do this ritual also.” Ultimately the marriage ceremony was ended with
seven rounds of fire by bride and groom. The last ritual was sindur daan. The marriage ceremony took place in a big temple only where all the important dev and deities were there. I was informed that all the priests of the temples
are from India. Knowing the scarcity of the priests in foreign
countries, Vishwa Hindu Parishad started imparting training to youths.
The trained priests are going there for different kinds of pujas and rituals also
Some other rituals like birthdays or marriage and festivals like Durga Puja, Holi, Diwali are
also celebrated in these temples. Temples are the meeting places of
Indians (Hindu). Some temples have started teaching Sanskrit and Hindi
languages and Indian music. Other social activities are also observed in the temples. They are very neat and clean.
Wherever Indians go,
they go with their deities. Gods and Goddesses give them strength, and
occasions to meet each others, to feel that they are not alone.
Community life is a source of support and confidence, and at the same
time the feeling that they are not alone.
The children of Indian
youth in the US are American citizens; they like to read the stories
from the Indian history. The stories of Hanuman or Ganesh gives them
surprise. They are not only entertaining, but also give lessons at the
these choices. They are publishing more and more books for children in
the US, of course in English.
Once I told my elder grandson Dhruv-
“you are Ram and your younger brother Dheer is Lakshman.” He refused
saying- “I am not blue. Ram is blue.” I could guess that Ram is shown
blue in children’s books. I suggested same to the publishers who publish children books in abroad not to show Ram in dark blue colour.

Re: Understanding the US-2
I didn't understand the last sentence. Was she recommending westernization of Ram? What next, Ram with Patriot missiles?
Re: Understanding the US-2
It doesn't seem like she is recommending anything... It's a description of a grandmother's experience. It is particular to her situation, and perhaps others in similar family environments in the US. As someone who has never lived in the US, or in that environment anywhere, it was a nice read for me.
