The 2012 Olympics Thread
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Here's the live score of Paes/Mirza vs Zimonjic/Ivanovic
live score
Currently up 3-1 in second set with a break.
Kashyap did extremely well. Don't beat him up - he accomplished far more than expected of him and will quite likely make the top 10 soon if Gopichand and others can help him manage his asthma. Realistically anyway we need Lee CW in the semis to stop the Chinese winning a gold in men's singles.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
The first set between Kashyap and Lee kept me on tenterhooks, and many times it seemed as if kashyap will pull through. He gave the Malaysian a hard time in the first set, but ran out of steam in second.

Does anyone know if Vijay Kumar qualified for 25m Pistol Finals ? The results are really confusing.

Despite the help of Mittal trust and all the facilities the boxers now enjoy, there will always be some babu who will do what heRahul M wrote:>> instead she was asked to train under some idiot she has never worked with before.

can to harm our medal chances. Mary Kom's coach a case in point.
We have sent more officials than was necessary on this (for them) taxpayers junket, including an accountant, media manager
etc. Surely the Indian embassy could have deputed staff for this.
I also agree that 81 athletes was more than what was necessary. I'm all for giving young athletes exposure and sending them
if they qualify but are not serious medal prospects. However, I see no justification in:
1. Participating in tennis women's doubles. Sania's partner is 34, she wont improve with more exposure.
2. Garima Chaudhary - Judo.
3. At least 4 in track and field are neither Commonwealth/Asian class. 10 athletes (rather than 14) are enough.
4. Ankita Das - TT
5. The swimmer.

>>The stage 2 of qualifiers are slated for tomorrow. As of now Vijay is in fifth position. Top six qualify for finals after stage 2.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Paes/Mirza potential path:
QF: vs Mirnyi/Azarenka (Belarus)
SF: vs Raymond/Bryan (US) or Gulko/Del Potro (Argentina)
They're on the harder side of the draw; the other side looks quite sparse. On the other hand, they beat an (on paper) strong team in Zimonjic/Ivanovic with relative ease.
Individual rankings do not seem to count for much in mixed doubles because both the 3rd and 2nd seeds on the other half of the draw are out in 1st round, meaning the finalist from Paes/Mirza's half of the draw faces a relatively unfancied team in the final.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Mirnyi/Azarenka will be a lot tougher than Zimonjic/Ivanovic If they get past them, There is a possibiltiy of atleast a bronze
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
If given resources We can easily match chinese on the Individual sports! our problem is that we are too focused on the team sports.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
More world class shuttlers are emerging from Gopichand's academy. They are being groomed for next 10 years. You can check the Indian players from these rankings

Sindhu who won the world junior championship recently is definitely the one to watch. She is #26 in the world and narrowly missed the Olympics...She is only 17. Pretty Tall has very good court coverage and smash.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
There is another guy JayRam who has similar ranking like that of Kashyap. He will also be a strong contender in the coming years.kshatriya wrote:Sindhu who won the world junior championship recently is definitely the one to watch. Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
The boxing events are a worry, because of the sloppy refereeing standard and number of controversies making it so unpredictable. I hope we're not at the receiving end of another set of poor scoring and more hard luck stories.

Badminton QF roundup
I would put Saina as the definite underdog in her semifinal due to past record, but she has the current form to win. If she does, I would put her as closer to 50-50 chance in the final because her opponent will be under huge pressure, and the Chinese will certainly manipulate the 2nd semifinal to pick a winner with a better chance of beating Saina in that case - probably Li, since Wang Xin is known for being temperamental and has no big wins recently, even though Wang has a positive head to head record against Li.Meanwhile, world champ Wang Yihan led compatriots Wang Xin and Li Xuerui into the women's semifinals, with only India's Saina Nehwal standing in the way of a Chinese sweep.
"I also feel like a Chinese," Nehwal joked. "It's a nice thing to be with them. The Chinese are very strong but I'm not worried about it."
On the women's side, Thai 17-year-old Ratchanok Intanon, the unprecedented winner of the last three junior world titles, threatened to upset the natural order when she was making Wang Xin, the No. 1 as recently as last year, look ordinary.
Ratchanok was three points from victory but couldn't close the deal, then was hampered by a right foot injury halfway through the third game and Wang Xin pounced to win 17-21, 21-18, 21-14.
Ratchanok said, "It's my own fault."
Wang Xin admitted, "I was anxious."
Wang Yihan was in a rematch of last year's worlds final with Cheng Shao-chieh of Taiwan, and Wang conceded the same number of points in the same amount of time as she won 21-14, 21-11.
Li Xuerui, who came out of nowhere this year to earn a last-minute Olympic berth, beat Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong 21-12, 22-20, winning the last game from 20-16 down.
Wang Xin has taken all five previous matches against Li Xuerui, but their semifinal will be their first matchup this year, and Li has won 34 of her last 35 matches. (that solitary loss was to Saina)
"None of us can say we are definitely confident on getting gold," Li said.
Nehwal, in excellent form having won 14 straight matches, was too hot for Danish veteran Tine Baun, who was put away 21-15, 22-20 in her third and last Olympics. Nehwal's victory banished the memory of blowing a big lead in the Beijing quarterfinals.
"That was torture for me," she said. "This time I'm very happy."

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
What is this game Handball? It does not look difficult or athletic or even a contact sport.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
I find this discussion rather odd. We can't just hand pick a sports thinking it is less competitive and hope for a medal. What should we do once the athletes from successful nations are playing those sports. Then do we move on to the next less competitive one?saip wrote:What is this game Handball? Sports has to become part of the popular culture, parents have to investment time and money the same way they do in kids education, government has to subsidize Sports through adequate supply of sports facility, industry has to patronize it, then we will achieve what we are hoping for. The good news is that it is happening though slowly but surely.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
No discussion. Just a question. Under which category of Olympic Motto 'Faster, Higher, Stronger' does it fall under? Even though I heard of it I never seen it played. But I expected it to be more vigorous like Basketball where there is practically non stop action. But in Handball there is hardly any activity except when the player with the ball runs towards the opponent's goal. Anyway, IMHO it does not deserve to be an Olympic sport.
What happened to Wushu (?) this year? Was it not the sport where the Chinese paid other countries to send their teams so that they (Chinese) can win a medal?

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Wushu wasn't officially a part of the Olympics, they just held the 2008 Wushu tournament at the Beijing Olympics as a demonstration for consideration of being included into the Olympics in the future.
BTW, what team sport is India good in as far as Olympics is concerned? The tone on this board seems to indicate that India is pretty good at team sports?

DavidD: what's the story in the Chinese press about the badminton disqualifications ? The English reports don't really reveal what the official machinery and state new agencies are saying.

Boxing body expels referee from London Olympics
LONDON (AP) -- An boxing referee from Turkmenistan was expelled from the London Olympics on Thursday for his handling of a bout in which the result was overturned on appeal.
Boxing's governing federation, known as AIBA, released a statement saying referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov "is on his way back home."
The federation also suspended German referee Frank Scharmach five days for his decision to disqualify an Iranian heavyweight, and expelled technical official Aghajan Abiyev of Azerbaijan.

He's slated to meet his longtime rival Uzbek boxer Abbos Atoev in the QF. Vijender defeated Atoev in the final to win the 2010 Asian Games middleweight gold medal.
