per MOD russia, 6 backfires again paid a visit to deir azzor , their 4th trip in a week .. if they could be based in iran, could save on fuel, increase payload to 36 bombs from 12, at the expense of having to ship in ground crew and munitions from russia.

The great thing about fuel being cheap, I suppose. The air crews and ground crews can go to work from home in the Rodina. Harder for mischief-makers to get into the base there, too.

Putin-Erdogan is play a shell game.
with a ceasefire in aleppo and idlib...

the "bad talib" Nusra is in process of killing and hounding out all the NATO supported formations.
NATO is ok with bombing the "bad talib"
the "good talibs" regretfully get taken out and thrown under bus by the "bad talib"
so the reconquista of Idlib gets simplified to half the problem set size and partially based on NATO time and dime (bombing nusra)
meantime they focus on the eastern fronts (ISIS) and rebuild the coastal areas
the bad talibs being AQ will periodically attack EU / US to keep them on their toes
if the bad talibs win due to nato dragging their feet, a fresh wave of idlibi refugees will break over EU
DT has already closed the door of his den, so its EUs problem now - onlee

would not be surprised to see the french and UK take a lead again in Idlib

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:50 P.M.) - On the night of January 23rd, the Russian Air Force reportedly transported dozens of Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers to the Deir Ezzor Governorate after the road to the military airport was close by the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS).

According to the Russian news outlet "Aaszewstaa," Ilyushin-76 transport carriers and Mi-17 choppers made their way across the vast Syrian Desert to the Deir Ezzor Governorate in order to transport a large number reinforcements from the Syrian Arab Army's 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard and 1st Armored Division.

It was necessary for the Russian Air Force to complete this transport of reinforcements because most aircraft were unable to land in the province due to the Islamic State's proximity to their landing zones.

Russia and Turkey conducted a joint aerial operation in Syria's Al-Bab after exchanging intelligence data on Daesh targets, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Russian Su-24M attack aircraft, Su-35S fighter jets and Turkish F-16 and F-4 fighter jets participated in the operation.

As a result of the joint airstrikes, three Daesh command centers and a number of terrorist strongholds have been destroyed.

Since January 18, Russian and Turkish warplanes have destroyed a total of 60 terrorist targets.

tiger forces have reached 7.5km from al-bab against light opposition...generally they bombard a couple villages a day to scare the ISIS back to next village and then take over . the hard core of isis is inside Al-bab and giving the turks a very tough time.
bagging these few 100 elite fighters will perhaps lead to a unravelling of ISIS in north syria like losing SRT or Dravid at a crunch time.

Deir Hafr and Jirah are other vital targets that are yet to be even attacked, let alone taken. deir hafr is only a short jog from the main SAA east aleppo base in kuweires airbase. even L39 planes are operating from kuweires but deir hafr front is inactive.

the extent of ISIS manpower and their ability to move them around and weaponize them is truly impressive. so far no semblance of a collapse in morale or numbers despite being under attack on so many fronts - al_bab, tabqa, khanasser, palmyra, deir azzor, tal afar, mosul, al_qaim.....each tailender just keeps fighting on regardless of how many wkts are down or the asking rate .... steyn and ambrose come steaming in and launch missiles which are promptly swatted to the fence.

these are truly tough and motivated these boys

NYT

WASHINGTON — The White House is drafting a presidential directive that calls on Defense Secretary James N. Mattis to devise plans to more aggressively strike the Islamic State, which could include American artillery on the ground in Syria and Army attack helicopters to support an assault on the group’s capital, Raqqa, officials said.

President Trump, who is to make his first visit to the Pentagon as commander in chief on Friday, will demand that the new options be presented to him within 30 days, the officials said. During the presidential campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly said that he had a secret plan to defeat the Islamic State, but he also said that he would give his commanders a month to come up with new options.

another decision on table is said to be whether involve the YPG-SDF alone or bring in the turkish militias into the fight - this route is probably what the SAA in east aleppo seeks to avoid by deftly blocking the path...and the militias after al-bab will be loathe to fight with ISIS forces N times larger ....

who knows even SAA could be supported for a move to Tabqah to seal off the north syria part of ISIS from moving back to Raqqa.

Republic congressmen angry over Tulsi meeting Assad
BBC
Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger called it "a shame and a disgrace".
"In no way should any member of Congress, should any government official, ever travel to meet with a guy that has killed 500,000 people and 50,000 children," said Mr Kinzinger who, like Ms Gabbard, is an Iraq War veteran.
The trip left experts wondering if Ms Gabbard, a representative from Hawaii, had violated legislation prohibiting unauthorised individuals from speaking to governments in dispute with the US.

Berkeley-Stanford Experts of the worst kind. "in dispute with the US" includes Mexico, Germany, China, Israel, India, and pretty-much any nation that has an elected government.
They are worried because Assad can tell her, and hence Trump, exactly which elephants and donkeys have been profiting by helping the ISIS. Expose the traitors, I mean.

President Trump says Christians will be give priority in immigrants/refugees from Syria.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-t ... SKBN15B29M

President Donald Trump said on Friday that Syrian Christians will be given priority when it comes to applying for refugee status in the United States.

"If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian, it was almost impossible and the reason that was so unfair, everybody was persecuted in all fairness, but they were chopping off the heads of everybody but more so the Christians," Trump said in an excerpt of an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Pew Research Center said last October 38,901 Muslim refugees entered the United States in fiscal year 2016 from all countries - almost the same number of Christian refugees, 37,521.

Trump was expected to sign an executive order on Friday that would temporarily halt refugees from some Muslim-majority nations, a White House official said.
