China is gaming the bureaucratic system also so that rules favoring them can be forced in from the top. Recently {1-2 yrs back}, there was this mud-slinging elections at AIBA {amateur boxing assn} where the Chinese guy won handsomely after no-name countries got cash peddled with. Thats the rumor. And guess who he beat. A Baki nonetheless. There was this recent whine on daily times about how Bakiland, which was supposed to be an "Asian powerhouse" in amateur boxing , got booted out of the scene with noone qualifying for Beijing and how its been a downslide etc.

In a short while, if the chinese market increases {a looooong stretch given that the chinese dont follow much else but some native martial arts, football and baski} in whats now called field hockey, we will see some rule changes to favor the chinese as the FIH is looking at dumping India. India, for good measure, has spat back at the Eurocentric administration, first with KPSG and now with Ajitpal & co dumping RicC and the FIH's evil cojones {Bob Davidzon} that set up Vision India Hockey program.

Wrestlers have often blamed their basic training on turf for their failure to perform on international stage - where competitions are held on the mat.

The three wrestlers are supported by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in their expenses for preparation for 2010 Commonwealth Games. 2005 Arjuna awardee Yogeshwar Dutt as well as Sushil Kumar successfully competed at the 2008 Asian Wrestling Championship held in South Korea. While the former bagged the gold medal in the 60-kg event, Sushil Kumar won the silver in the 66-kg category. Both were trained in Patiala under the guidance of Asiad gold medallist Satpal Pehalwan and have also undergone training schedules in Minsk, Belarus and Havana. Jadhav got the bronze in the Freestyle Bantamweight class at Helsinki, but since then no other Indian wrestler have succeeded in emulating him, though a few came close and even finished among the top six. In Helsinki itself, Mangwe Srirang Jadhav was ranked fourth in the featherweight class after losing his bronze medal bout to American Josiah Hanson by a solitary point. At Los Angeles in 1984, Rajinder Singh missed a medal by a whisker, coming fourth in the 74 Kg category.

Good rewards coming in for Sushil

Rewards pour in for Sushil Kumar

New Delhi (PTI): Rewards started pouring in for Sushil Kumar who won bronze medal in Beijing Olympics today with the Railway Ministry and Delhi Government announcing cash awards to a total of Rs 1.05 crores for the wrestler.

Minutes after Kumar clinched the bronze medal beating Kazakhstan's Leonid Spiridonov in men's freestyle wrestling 66kg class, Railway Minister announced that the grappler will be promoted as a Assistant Commercial Manager from ticketing inspector.

Prasad also announced a cash reward of Rs 55 lakh for Kumar, who is employed with the Railways.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also announced a Rs 50 lakh reward for the wrestler, who hails from Najafgarh in south-west Delhi.

Besides the cash reward, Dikshit also said Satpal, Kumar's trainer who is employed with Delhi Government's Sports Department, will be given an out-of-turn promotion.

"Congratulations to everybody, to Delhi specially. This boy has done remarkably well. He comes from rural Delhi, comes from a government school which makes us doubly proud," Dikshit said.

She said she could not believe that Kumar had won the medal even though everybody was hoping that something will happen. "But we did not expect we will get a bronze."

"I thought my heart has stopped for a minute because I could not believe what I was hearing. The joy and tears have been so spontaneous," she said.

Sushil is only the second Indian grappler to win the wrestling bronze after Kashabha Jadhav had returned with the medal in 1952 Helsinki Games. Shooter Abhinav Bindra has won the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the country earlier at the Beijing Games.

one thing I observed, looking at the site. All the olympians were felicitated with arjun awards much before they actually go and win in olympics. Keeping track of these awardees seem to give a narrow but reliable set of actual contenders for India.

They seem to felicitate 10 to15 people per year. Narrowing down our resources to these 100 people will help us develop for these medals.

If we can use a few excellent training facilities, i.e. facilities of excellence in which entry is restricted to these awardees. The buildings which we are building for the commonwealth, if used for these people will greatly improve our future chances at olympics.

As Bob Costas, on NBC, mentioned how Phelps achievement brought Spitz back into people's memory. The former record holder gets some attention from the new generation. Similarly, Sushil's excellence brings Jadhav into the front burner for a few moments:

SwamyG, great find. Hardly a clue as to what the jargon meant.

Sadly, it is true that some Baki fora are better at sports news than most of our dhimmedia. In fact, scouring Baki fora for hockey news has become my addiction cos none of our media highlights the nuances of what some rule changes mean, who is holding the charges at FIH, why some stoopid teams get a chance at CT or CTC, whose side is the bread being buttered by FIH, level of preparedness of the Baki team, how the subcontinental style of hockey is getting leveraged etc. Except for one or two enlightened hockey commentators like Vijay Lokapally, S. Thyagarajan etc none even fit the bill to be called informed. Same sad state of affairs with boxing, kabaddi, squash etc.

Former Davis Cupper Shyam Minotra breathed his last here on Tuesday after prolonged illness, according to the All India Tennis Association. He was 62. Minotra was a top player in the country in the late 60s and 70s. At the peak of his career, he and S.P. Misra won the Asian Championship in 1970 and along with Jaideep Mukerjea bagged the Asian Games doubles bronze in 1978. He also defeated Ille Nastase of Romania.

The womens team will enter the finals if they dont fck up the baton xchange like they did in one of the qualifying races and if Mandeep has fully recovered. After that, one has to pray that the Oiropeans have a terrible day for a medal. Btw, the team had their best timing minus Mandeep which led to some dramabaazi as it came after some imaginary cutoff qualifying date with the IAAF. So even if Mandeep is out, the other 4 are all well experienced. Mandeep is the young gun, the power bomb so 2 speak. She did nt take part in the 400 ms all along just to conserve herself for this. Hope she does nt have a heart break like Anju. Likelihood out of 100: 30-70.

Rajiv Tomar, like Sushil, is coming to the spotlight now. There will be lotsa gazes on him. Good chances that he will feel the pressure of a billion+ all of a sudden from complete obscurity. The coach has said that Rajiv has gone an experience trip since he is in the heavyweight division. He could spring a surprise if he does nt end up facing the finalist in the first rd like Sushil. There are no seeds in wrestling matches, so anyone can face anyone even in the first rd. Thats why they have the repechage. Likelihood: 40-60.

Vijender was our best bet in boxing from the horse's mouth {the Cuban coach}. The defending OG Gold medalist and the person he beat very recently, Bakhtyar Artayev is out. he faces the Cuban Emilio Correa now. Chances are 60-40 in Vijender's favor.
