OK Ankit ji, have it your way
The regulations are crystal clear but she claimed that the new federation members may "change" the rules, how and why she claimed that is not known or even clarified by her
The rules quoted are those as per the rules uniformly applicable internationally
her participation in two weight categories during the same selections is not permitted per the prevailing rules but she bulldozed her way through

Chetakji,
There are reports that the lady cut her hair, donated blood etc in a last ditch effort to get to 50 kg. However all failed, and she was admitted to hospital, but the photo from the hospital show her with full head of hair… what gives?

But the real issue is that we have a small pool of really good prospective medal candidates. This allows star players to get away with such dramabaazi. If there was competition for each spot, these things wouldn’t have happened.

Sports in India has a very opaque system of selections and training.
And those who do win at international levels then lord over the rest.
The sense of entitlement seems to have percolated to every strata of society.
And family oriented business be it politics or sports has become bane of the society.
Unless we come up with a selection process of state level to national level winners to be able to compete in international meet rather than on past performances this will continue
Yes we will have a Bhindra or Chopra every decade but not on a regular basis.

Tanaji saar, her hair has been cut, and it is pretty badly cut too
surely she would not dare to appear completely bald in a wrestling match at the Olympics

The losing semifinalist to Vinesh was upgraded to finalist .
Meanwhile Mirabai Chanu adds one more 4th place to our long list of 4th place and QF finishes this Olympics. I wish there was a tally of 4th place finish countries - we'd be #1 .

In other news the lady wrestler who qualified for 53 kg category Antim Panghal is probably being sent home for indiscipline. Her coaches were found inebriated and refused to pay a taxi or similar. Plus she herself didnt appear for practice and gave her pass to her sister…

Thanks to this Olympics I hope the hare-brained efforts to bring the Olympics to India in 2036 are permanently skewered. There is no sports federation currently capable of ramping up performance to at least 10 golds - the absolute minimum to aspire to as a host and rising world power, within 3 Olympic cycles.
Aim for 50 AG golds by then, and a top 5 position in the Universiade, Youth Olympics and junior worlds, and go from there.

most, if not all of them seem to have a similar sociocultural background, and that includes the jokers in the federations

He also mentioned that an Italian wrestler was also disqualified for being overweight earlier during the ongoing Olympics. Weight of Emanuela Liuzzi was found to be above 50 kg before her debut match in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling category. Similarly, Algeria’s Messaoud Redouane was disqualified in Judo for being overweight.

She had already been hammered 10-0 in her bout and was also suspected to be struggling with fatigue in getting the weight within limits.. All round screw up
As far as sharing her credentials w her sister go unfortunately that's largely due to the "Chalta Hai" attitude we see too often in India where rules and regulations can easily be flouted or bent based on connections and need. We say "bas itni si Baat hai" and expect the world to follow suit.

S_Madhukar ji,
It's a toolkit to divert attention away from the fast escalating anti Hindu violence in beediland. Things are rough out there for the Hindus and the jamat + elements of the isis are leading this targeted violence
The BIF and many political parties in India do not want the Hindu consolidation to take root and start to build, fuelled in part by the jihadi violence in beediland. Some state elections are close by
phogat is done and dusted, and no appeal against this disqualification will even work now.
Maintaining fighting weight was solely her own responsibility and the failure to do so is again solely her fault.
She was disqualified earlier during one of the previous olympic games so she is not a novice in these matters. At that time she was around 400 gms over the limit
Let them continue to beat this dead horse, because folks will soon see through it and figure it out

#WATCH | Former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda says, "...There should be an investigation into what was the reason for disqualifying Vinesh Phogat.
Today a Rajya Sabha seat is vacant (in Haryana).
If I had the majority, I would have sent her to the Rajya Sabha..."
@abhishekaitc
The GOVERNMENT and OPPOSITION should find a way to form a consensus and either award VINESH PHOGAT the BHARAT RATNA or nominate her to a PRESIDENT -NOMINATED RS SEAT, acknowledging the extraordinary mettle she has demonstrated.
This is the least we can do for her, considering the immense struggle she has faced.
No MEDAL can fully reflect her true METTLE .

Got disqualified as she herself couldn't manage her own weight!
Still "BJP" CM .@NayabSainiBJP has declared ₹4 Crore reward to wrestler Vinesh Phogat along with facilities given to a Silver Medalist.
Being a "Virtuous Woman", as she claims, will she accept it?

Good for Spain for coming in the top 4, with the selection format, I believe hockey is the most innovative of all sports, you have 5 as continental champions, asian, euro, amer, afri, oceanic, and then the most thrilling fih qualifiers, that usually has 6 open spots amongst the runners up of the above competitions, plus the hosts, this also means that saffa and argentina would always be there from their quota, the competitive euros usually grab the open 6 slots,

Well done to the hockey team. Not only were India the only non white nation in the quarterfinal, but by semifinal we were the only Pool B team left, with Aus and Bel out. Germany was just too hard to beat and they got exactly the position they deserved for their performance,

Aman Sehrawat is in the semifinal of the 57 kg class. His opponent is Japanese Rei Higuchi who won silver in 57 kg class in 2016 olympics. He tried to compete in the 65 kg but was unsuccessful. He is back now at 57 kg.
Added Later:
He lost 10-0. Sigh.

There's enough people on SM writing about the wrestling drama so I'll avoid posting there.
There are inconsistencies in how the wrestling program works at the Olympics. It used to be that until 2016, the entire program for a weight class took just one day. In that case Vinesh would have probably gotten gold. Due to the physical toil of so many matches in a day while recovering from a weight cut, they split just the medal rounds to day 2.
But now wrestlers have to weight in on successive days . All rounds up to semifinal are done on day 1. On day 2 the repechage and final occurs.
The rules are that if you fail to make the day 1 weigh-in, you do not compete. Your bracketed opponent gets a walkover. Fine. That's perfectly consistent.
But if you fail the day 2 weigh-in, you lose your medal contention matches, are stripped of your position and the one who lost to you takes your place. This is inconsistent and retroactive punishment - you are being stripped of a position you made legitimately and others are being elevated after losing legitimately on day 1.
The rule should be that you can't fight the day 2 matches you are slotted for, and take the lowest medal you can get as a result - which may be nothing if you're in repechage, or a silver if you're a finalist.
As it stands, you can have someone who lost fair and square in the semifinal on day 1 win the gold on day 2, when that person should not even be in the final. This is inconsistent.
One should not be able to win gold in wrestling with one legitimate defeat - it's impossible. And cannot win silver with two legitimate defeats. There would be bronze medal winners with a single defeat - the same as gold medalist, and fewer than the silver medalist.
The only circumstance under which a losing competitor should get elevated to the next round is if their opponent cheated. But someone who passed weigh-in on day 1 is not cheating.
The UWW President sympathized with the Vinesh episode and said they understand this but cannot retroactively change rules - people are going to ask for that to be retroactive all the way back to 2016. It would help if he's at least acknowledge the retroactive punishment that currently exists.
As for Vinesh, she lost the 53kg trials to Antim Panghal 0-10, proceeded to demand to try 50kg and won that, then asked for a second trial for 53kg (or something of the sort - lots of hearsay). Ultimately she wagered on being able to perform at 50kg, demanded her own performance team to help make weight, got what she demanded and took her shot. She worked hard to script a fairytale on day 1 - beating the greatest women's wrestler ever of her class, then the European and then PanAmerican champion. And then she blew her gambit.
Such is life. One doesn't get everything they want, but they can give the best shot of the circumstances. She played on this razor thin margin and almost pulled it off. Almost.

Suraj-san,
My point is this: she herself wanted to compete in 50kg class. She knew she would be competing in this class in March itself. So why the last minute struggle to make the weight? Shouldn’t she have practised to make a stable weight at 50 kg between March and August? As far as I know she wasn’t competing in 53 kg at Olympics….Antim was.
Working on thin margins means you need to get your plans absolutely clear. I wonder what her support team was thinking… perhaps she had another competition in 53 kg between March and august?

They don't usually stabilize weight well ahead. Cutting multiple kgs days prior to competition is normal. But when you're well below your typical competition weight, this is really hard to do.
One can go back and say 'she should have been handed 53kg on reputation'. No, she should compete like everyone else. She did and failed, demanded to also try 50kg and because there's no hard and fast rule against it, they let her, and she won that. Now it was on her to deliver in that class. So she demanded her own support staff and was given that. I don't think there's anything too controversial here. Sure she threw her weight about, but ok - it's all forgiven if you deliver.
Previously there was only one weigh-in but potentially multiple additional matches to perform at in an exhausted state after weight cutting for the morning weigh in. They tried to fix that with 2 days of competition so the medal rounds would have fresher competitors. But really that doesn't quite work as intended because now the weigh-in stress is extended to day 2.
Failing weigh-in is not uncommon. Vinesh herself failed her 53kg weigh in - not even 50kg - before a past Olympic qualifier. There was a NoKo wrestler in Paris who also did, and he supposedly proceeded to stick his hand down his mouth and trigger his puke reflex to throw up and make weight. Vinesh supposedly also tried that but had eaten nothing anyway so nothing happened. There were others who failed and were DQed the same way, just not in such dramatic circumstances as a finalist.
She and her support team just happened to blow the gambit at the worst moment possible, with the world at her feet and on form, the gold waiting for her.
