His unparalleled dominance of present day world chess and ILO ratings notwithstanding, Magnus' antiques are quite bizzare and often confrontational. I thin he is doing all this drama to get publicity for this new platform. The sharing of Blitz title was quite unprecedented. FIDE is unable to deal with this enfant terrible, and others like Nakamura who are also making drama now.

Hope Gukesh and rest of the Indian gang will counter this circus by simply upping their game and being calm and cool.

^^^ To put it in chess terms, the Jeans-gate was a gambit opening from Carlsen, which put FIDE on backfoot since most people sympathized with Carlsen.
Then, Carlsen fell into a trap by accepting the piece sacrifice by FIDE and lost tempo. Now, everyone is wary of Carlsen's influence on world chess. Carlsen had to defend against match fixing allegations too. This episode won't be forgotten.
All in all, Carlsen lost badly.

The government's flagship Khelo India programme to scout and nurture athletes at the grassroots level was the biggest beneficiary as the allocation for sports was hiked substantially by Rs 351.98 crore in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Saturday.

The ambitious scheme has been allocated Rs 1,000 crore for the financial year 2025-26. This is Rs 200 crore more than the grant of Rs 800 crore in 2024-25.

Had the privilege of attending and listening to Ilayaraaja's Symphony #1 at Hammersmith Apollo. What an incredible genius! I left awed and the first movement is still spinning around in my head. To do this at 80 and that too written within a few weeks!

I felt it was autobiographical in the emotions and passion it evoked. Hopefully, he will release it or go on a grand tour to other countries, so they can experience it.

The music we are used to in India is based, predominantly, on Indian musical traditions - which is how it should be. Our music relies on general guidance on how to sing / perform a song, but mainly relies on artistic freedom, expression and their skill in doing impromptu improvisations on the spot. Film music is slightly more structured in that there is a music composer enforcing a set of rules on how the song should be sung / performed. Even there, some composers allow improvs to a degree. Our music is not random though. It has its own traditional structure (For e.g. in Carnatic music, we have pallavi, anupallavi, charanam, koruvai, vistAra etc.) but the emphasis is always on artistic expression and less on the composer's strictures.

On the other side, western classical traditions are composer led. The composer brings everything to the table, the artists - with guidance from the conductor of the orchestra - may interpret some elements of the composition. But, it can't vary from the composers ideas. There are structural differences in how a composition is laid out as well. For e.g. a sonata is a short piece with specific thematic elements and written specifically for 1 to 2 instruments. The grandest of those structures are symphonies and operas. Symphonies typically are about 45 minutes long built up using 3 or 4 parts - called movements - with each part bringing specific thematic elements, which the composer wishes to express, to the front. Typically the first movement sets the pace and introduces the listeners to what they are about to listen, and then build up their piece to a finale.

While these are structural and traditional differences, there is also the difference in how we arrange our songs. Since improv (or manodharma) has higher weightage, our ancestors and gurus didn't experiment on harmonics. Harmonics is the tool which allows composers to arrange and layer one instrument on top of the other. As an example, notice all the violins sitting and playing notes in an orchestra. They are not exactly playing the same notes. Strings / violins section is itself divided into 4 or 5 - first violins, second violins, violas, cellos and contrabass. A western classical composer needs to write for each part in the string section separately. The skill of a composer is in making such sections sound rich and lush. They will rarely be playing the same note. Then there are woodwinds (flutes, oboes, clarinets), brass (trumpets), percussion (timpani), piano etc. The composer will need to write parts for each of these sections and they all have to sound harmonious together, but at the same time allowing the listener to experience something new to what they have heard before. Requires perseverance, skill and a whole load of creativity.

That is probably the best I could to do as a 101 for these traditions

I recently discovered the inspiring story of Tara Prasad, India's national skating champion. Tara made the decision to switch from US citizenship to Indian citizenship in 2019.

Since then, she has dominated the Indian skating scene, winning the national championship three times!

Although she narrowly missed qualifying for the last Winter Olympics, Tara is already setting her sights on the 2026 Games. I wish her all the best.

Today's Manorama newspaper reported that the much hyped Malayalam film Empuran will be undergoing a total of 17 editings.

What is surprising is that Manorama giving a detailed description of the criticism by the RSS publication Organiser on the topic. As I said in the forum recently several times the trend of publishing the view points of BJP is increasing in the Manorama which is owned by Christian group. Recently Kerala Catholic Bishop Conference demanded that Kerala MPs should support the waqf bill. Saw another video of a Kerala pastor participating in a Hindu meeting and showering praises on RSS. I suspect that these are not isolated events and hopefully these will increase the goodwill to BJP amongst the Christians.

Just watched the new Mission Impossible movie. As usual they tried to put Pak a bit ahead of India when it came to listing N power states but at least they showed an Agni-5 like missile (although neither country uses silos) for India.
