The 2012 Olympics Thread
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
I think the chinese gal showed why she is a champ. Saina seemed a bit defensive. I had hoped that Saina would get a gold and if she had won this match, then the gold chance would have been very real.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
narang/karmakar unlikely to qualify
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
when was yihan's quarter match ?
I think saina was defensive because she was tired, her movement body language everything had a spent look. 2 KO matches back to back within a 14 hour period is hard on anybody.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Om Prakash Singh not qualified in Shotput.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Joydeep in fourth place after three shots in ten shot final. He has a chance for bronze.
Fourth after six shots. Hope he doesn't make a PT Usha of himself. Please pray, all.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Bad bad first week for India. Two main medal hope sports, archery and shooting came up with only one bronze. Was hoping for at least 4 medals of any colour by now.
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
it is not a bad first week, overall team performance is much improved - let us recognise that at least
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
karmakar 4th
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Joydeep finishes fourth 1.9 points adrift of bronze medalist in Rifle 50m prone. Heartbreak.
Sergei Matynov sets world record in the same event

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
2-3 not so good shots deprived him of a bronze. still, well shot !
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
v kumar in 4th in qual, 1 pt behind 3rd, 1 pt ahead of 5th
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
1.9 pts is a huge gap at that level....the other day in 10m rifle people were in a fight to the death over 0.1 gaps.
Gagan had to activate afterburners to make it home vs wang tao.
still, routinely finishing among top15 in such super elite competitions bodes well.....medals in AG and CWG usually.
except for one or two cases, all of our sportsmen have given their best, some have broken personal and national records....upto whatever level they had trained for they have delivered.
other countries have 3-4 people at such levels where we have 1. Gagan's main chinese rival Qinan faded out but Wang tao rose to the occassion. similarly in other sports many favoured names fell off. but having multiple top performers they could snag some medal. cheen has these 3-pack of world beaters in sports like TT and badminton. if one doesnt get you, the other will.US has massive depth in swimming and gymnastics, UK in cycling, china in diving, tt, badminton, kenya in running....
we need more mass in the shaft of the spear now. instead of 80 qualifiers we need to drive for 300.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
we've gone from being nowhere to being just outside the medal rankings in less than a decade when we have a poor sports infrastructure and the rest of the world are literally sprinting ahead with significant investment in sports capability
just imagine what more we could achieve and what we will achieve in the coming years...

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
^^ Question if we will build on this or go backwards since in India, unlike elsewhere, if there is no medal to show, there will be no public interest and no corporate support.
Wonder if the funding will reduce after this performance in 2012 since the pre-olympic hype was so much ( casuign companies also to put in money for sponsoring athletes etc) about atleast 5-6 medals and we will mostly return with 1-2 medals.

Think pistol is the only shooting one where qual scores dont count and only the shots in final matterSupratik wrote:v kumar in 4th in qual, 1 pt behind 3rd, 1 pt ahead of 5th
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
India getting hammered by Ger in hockey. 4-1 at half-time.
Will be a miracle if we dont loose by 10-12 goal margin going by the way Germans are running rings around us. Honestly, dont see us coming anywhere near the top in Hockey for next 50 years

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
Format is like this. There is no carry forward from qual.
After four rounds of five shots each lowest scorer is eliminated.
After that one shooter is eliminated after each round of five shots each.
It is important to be consistent. Vijay can win Gold here.

just reading it here makes me tense... ayyo ayyoo..
Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread
I completely agree. There is no joy in saying that we just missed a medal by 0.1 or 1 point or 1 sec, or that we got a bronze (whenSingha wrote:1.9 pts is a huge gap at that level....the other day in 10m rifle people were in a fight to the death over 0.1 gaps.

a better colour was expected). We to recognise that we have under-performed and figure out how to improve.
Taking badminton as an example:
1. There are probably all of 2 training centres in the country (run by Prakash Pakukone and Gopichand). Korea/Indonesia/Denmark
would each have around 20 equivalent facilities (leave aside China). Other things being equal, we will produce Olympic level
players in the ratio of players who get world class facilities.
2. Potential champions pretty much take up the sport full time by the time they are in their teens. In India, half will drop out due
to board exams, the others start training later (because Mummy/daddy will not allow).
Unless there is state intervention, wherein young athletes are given both a stipend and college admission, we will lose most
of our potential champions.
3. All the TV /Press ads of `hopes of a Billion people are with you' is a load of crap. People would support the sport when the
National badminton championship has a 20000 crowd and its shown on prime time TV (because there are 5 Saina equivalents
who all have a chance of winning).
4. Full time support staff who will (for e.g) analyse every game played by the top 100 players/ every game thrown by the Chinese
etc. Our contingent can include 1 politician - a lawyer of a caliber of Jaitley/Sanghvi, to file protests/appeals. It would help
if we understand how the federation works and get pally with their officials. This has to be a full time job for people at our
federation.
