For the next month the satellite will orbit earth building enough velocity to catapult itself out of the Earth's gravitational influence. And then moving to the Sun's sphere of influence it will traverse space to reach Mars orbital position in Sept 2014. That's 10 months from now.

Coasting is unpowered travel for the launch vehicle

The crucial phase is now. When we lose track of the actual coasting and use simulative extrapolations. Let me rephrase that: there are so many crucial inflection points during this entire episode. The launch, the long coasting, the black-out periods in between, moving from earth's gravitational influence and then moving in and out of the Sun's influence, reaching orbital position around Mars, the ignition of motors after a long lull...Mr. Radhakrishnan rightly calls this a Technology Demonstrator. The aspect where we actually study the Mars surface will be the bonus.
