Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Given that Anand expressed regret at the result of the game two and quoted saying it should be getting interesting, it is very likely that today's game will progress well past middle game, into the end game and potentially a non-draw result.
I echo RahulM's sentiments but a draw in today's game is also OK.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
In the 2nd game, I thought it was Anand's win until the queen exchange. Frankly, I didn't understand the queen exchange move by Anand when he could have gone for a check-mate using the queen and camel(We, deshi amateurs, used to call bishop as camel and rook is called elephant while Queen is called Minister. I still like to use that terminology
).
I thought the queen exchange move by Anand was bad move. A really bad move...
So far, it seems like a the matches are not showing any great 'genius'. And in one of the post-match interviews, Anand or carlsen said that they didn't want to play blind(meaning, they will only play the moves that have already been played earlier and which they have read and by-hearted). Thats seems like a let down to me...
Infact, playing chess by by-hearting the scenarios seems counter-productive to me. And if the players only repeat the same moves that are played earlier, then how will new tactics develop? I thought the allure of the chess is to think and develop tactics.... not by-heart the moves and execute them...

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
in bengal deshi sytem bishop = gaj (hathi) and rook=nouka (boat/ship)
in original chaturang, bishop=gaj and rook = rath (chariot)
incidentally, bishop=slon (elephant) in russki. I guess the oonth thing is influence from satranj.
edit : check out parimarjan negi's blog, it's hilarious.

JohneeG : agree...my thoughts too.
Also, I too learnt it as oonth/camel, haathi, raja and mantri.
RahulM: Isn't Shatranj is from Chaturang ? ie. Chaturang had the 'chess' version too (not with dice, and with the 2 player placement).

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
viv ji, yes. but there was backwards movement of persian shatranj influencing Indian chess as well during medieval period.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Anand has a speck of Vivadhi (vibhuti) on his forehead. Waiting for articles and blogs to give their bhashyas.
Slight advantage for White.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
I like GM Ramesh's commentary. Tania is better than the other dud. Marten, did you hear what Ramesh said about that move and Carlsen?
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
very hard to say right now. the GM's at chessdom think MC surrendered a bit of an advantage by not playing Qc1 before Bb4, because now anand can attack the white knight.

Ramesh explained Carlsen's style. Carlsen does not hesitate to bring back his pieces, after he has achieved its plan. In non-concrete positions, Ramesh learned from abhijit khunte is that it is okay to move forward and come back later. Susan Polgar does not understand Qc1 at all. Ramesh seems to have read Carlsen's mind. He is laughing explaining. Susan is almost lost. Ramesh thinks Carlsen likes to play non direct chess, cat and mouse games. While Anand likes direct games.
Ramesh thinks Anand is okay now, but like Carlsen's play so far. Susan thinks Carlsen is not so good.
Saar, get earphones for the next game.
I like Anand's advanced pawn.

15...a5 might be a good move now.
a4 is not a bad move but the order could have been better.

directed at me ? nah, prefer reading. that way you can do other things too.

how ?I was thinking MC would go for a5.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Man, I love the close up shots of Anand's face. I sometimes apply small speck of vibhuti like Anand. I am going to develop a man crush pretty soon.
Susan prefers Anand's position now.
No that was @ Marten, can you share the link where you are reading commentary? It will be useful for longer games.

GM gujrathi successfully predicted Anand's move. b6

wow, they had a skirmish. I would go for 17...f5 but hey what do I know.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
that was in the next move saar, in that move he could only go upto a4.
methinks anand missed a trick by not going for a5, allowing MC to barge in. c6 position is the key.
edit : vishy moves kingside rook to support c6. I hope MC doesn't eye the kingside and go for bishop exchange.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
as I feared MC moved queen kingside to build pressure.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
The dood and Tania are not good for Anand. Bring Ramesh and Susan back in. The dood is clearly a fan of MC.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
moving towards another draw unless someone goofs up. last chance for anand to pile some pressure might be h5, Bh6
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Wow. Now they prefer black. A few moves ago, they preferred white. As long as queens are on the board, Anand is in.
Tania, finds a 3 move repetition. How cute. I mean she is cute.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Highly highly impressed with Ramesh and Tania.
So Anand is better now. Will he go far a draw?
Wow, he did not go for the easy draw. Hope it does not end up being costly.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
hehe, is MC's queen a rook now ? sure behaves like one.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
the c6 pawn is en prise.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
he moved it immediately.

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
all i want is this to happen!

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
That is how Topalov played until last the WC against Anand, Anand himself said that Topalov made openings and to his surprise stuck to them which was against his pattern of play until the WC. Anand's prep did not work on those occasions. This is the beauty of modern game you prepare so much for another person's style of play and openings only to start from scratch when the other guy comes up with a new plan.SwamyG wrote:http://chennai2013.fide.com/anand-carls ... ommentary/

Muruga.....a draw would rattle Carlsen.
Anand played so quickly....

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Susan thinks Carlsen is now fighting for survival. Come on Anand , stay calm and get it done. I will take a draw, But then Carlsen would be a wounded animal. Dangerous in future games.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
even vishy winning will make him a wounded animal
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Rf8 to stop that queen from moving out.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Carlsen out of woods?
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Carlson always looks like he is about to cry.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
he should have played that Rf8

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Looks like a draw. Lost feed on the video from the Chennai Fide site.
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
its a draw
I think anand made some mistakes or could have won

Carlsen: It was quite scary.
Carlsen: Just happy to survive.
Carlsen: "I made a couple of misjudgments in the middle game and my position was worse. I made it worse and underestimated the plan."

Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
Ok any guesses on what opening or it's variation will Anand employ in next game ?
Re: World Chess Champion Anand defends his title.
i bet Carlsen wont expect a reti from Anand
play by me that part again where the "superior" rated player would easily grind Anand to dust and walk over him easily? Oh for the record the "superior" rated Russian men and women's teams went down to "inferior" rated teams in the European championship.
there was also a series of articles by some gora Ivy League PeeChaddee on how Anand had only 8% chance at best to win against Carlsen using some statistical analysis with a pee-factor influencing things. The chap also insinuated (my interpretation) that Anand won in the past due to short matches just like in this one and also due to luck (Alekhine-Euwe) brought in for good measure as an example.
Thing is that just like the great white hunter is always the best, all others are duffers. Maybe its eccentricity, the more eccentric you are the greater are the chances that you will be called the best of the best. Fischer, Kasparov, Carlsen. But that doesnt explain Topalov.
The well mannered chaps are given such less coverage. In most press coverage in the west on the championship the focus was always on MC. Anand was just given a passing reference. In the Gelfand Vs Anand match, both were given less coverage, Gelfand getting the stick more often.

MC got a very lucky escape and admitted it. Anand offered the draw but MC played till the game reached the draw. MC will play till the end every game or what?
This is war now.

World Championship: Interview with Anand
9/26/2013 – The Russian Internet TV channel Chess TV has recorded two interview for the upcoming World Championship match. Last week we showed you the first with Norwegian challenger Magnus Carlsen; today we bring you a 23-minute interview with Viswanathan Anand in which the World Champion expresses his thoughts on the match, his chess career and life in general. Do not miss this one.
