Chances are the Su-22 pilot may not even know he is under attack if this was WVR fight , They need a MAWS to know if he is under attack and the direction the missile is approaching him to take evasive active and drop flares. Other wise it is just a pilot hunch , like hitting in the dark

The coalition said the Syrian Su-22 had bombed US-backed fighters battling so-called Islamic State in Raqqa province...http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-40329036
but then US could be lying again.

In another news Australia is stopped anti IS raids in Syria after Russia warns US their jets could be downed...
SDF is about 60% Kurd /40% jihadist. I'll bet the Syrians were bombing the jihadist-variety SDF and not Kurds. Syrian govt has a tactical alliance with the Kurds; it makes no sense they'd bomb them.

these arab formations in SDF are indeed a bit suspicious. US has been scooping up and training whoever is willing to join for pay in an attempt to arabize the forces now fighting in raqqa. these proxies will later be used to try and control eastern syria.

some could be deserters from jihadi bands or just people who changed jobs for better salary.

some could be genuine freedom fighters tired of the isis tyranny...like parts of the al shaitat tribe caught outside dez under isis rule. the shaitat in dez are fighting with the govt forces.

@Singha the pylons are the place where rocket pods are attached. The rocket pods are not attached. The tube like thing next to the bottom of the fuselage in the camo colours is the fuel tank. This looks like the Mi 17 variant in IAF where we could carry 192, 57 mm rockets could be fitted.

A guess a high fwd speed landing which has sheered off the landing gear. Also burn marks aft of the APU. This thing has taken a lot of punishment and kept its occupants alive.

Daeshbag corpses littered the battlefield along the Khanasser-Ithriya Road. Their desperate offensive failed & now their men are fertilizer

^^^ isis tried to hit the tiger forces from the back @ resafa utilizing their pocket south of the khanassir plains.
but scouts spotted their gatbandhan and they were smacked.

i think tigers are consolidating at resafa until the forces from Ithriyah break through the last 30km of road and stabilize their logistical line and protection from the flanks.

so could be a few days of quiet on that front.

Sukhnah is the gate into the lands of mordor...after that its all open desert with no defensible chokepoints, hills or rivers all the way to euphrates.

ISIS will fight viciously there. but if drones show all the civilians have vacated the place , they should just raze it with aeriel bombs and TOS1 and rebuild later. its only a small town.

If we are to believe CNN, it took a BVR!

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/21/polit ... index.html
Immediately after the Syrian Su-22 fighter jet dropped its bombs, two American F/A-18E Super Hornets, flying from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, engaged, firing a AIM-9 Sidewinder -- a short-range air-to-air missile -- at the Syrian plane from about half a mile away, two US officials told CNN.

But the Syrian jet deployed defensive flares, causing the US missile to miss its target. The US pilot proceeded to fire off a second missile, an AIM 120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, which hit its intended target, downing the Syrian warplane and forcing its pilot to eject, the officials added.
